Some things never changed. Today she was mopping the dininghall floor. There were still a few people around, but it was quite late so most had retreated to their quarters. Mopping. Was this going to be her whole life? Maybe it wouldn't be a very long life anyway; people didn't talk about the plague much anymore but it still weighed on her mind... Still, no matter how long or short her life was, she didn't really want to spend it mopping. She wanted a life like the characters in her stories had... well not quite, a good deal less danger would be nice, but interest, excitement... a lifemate.
As she stuck her mop back into the bucket of water a squeak caught her attention, and she turned to see a small green flitt hovering in the air beside her. Smiling faintly, she reached out a hand for her little friend to land on before transferring the flitt to her shoulder and setting back to work. Well, at least if she had to mop forever she had a pretty little friend who would never leave her. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad... She still wished one of the dragons had wanted her.

Cass entered the dining hall, Vespereth tailing along behind her. The green had grown quite a lot as of late, but she was still the smallest of the clutch, and even though many of them had outgrown the ability to move about indoors, Vespereth could still manage. It did get a little tight sometimes though. In her arms, the little blond woman carried a jar of oil she'd had to have refilled in the store room to keep up with Vespereth and her brand new little blue firelizard's dry hide. They grew so fast, it was like they were outgrowing their own skin constantly!
On her way back towards the barracks, Cass stopped in the dining hall to see if there were any leftovers. Looking after a young dragon and a hatchling firelizard was hard work and left her hungrier than she normally had been in the past. Large dark eyes swept around the large hall and saw that there was indeed still a few meat rolls out on a platter. She grabbed one quickly just before a kitchen worker came to take the platter away, and smiled her thanks. The worker handed her another one, earning him another smile.
"Thanks." She said, a little quietly so she wouldn't wake her blue flit, Ohm, where he slept, curled about her shoulders. She took a seat at one of the tables and bit into the meat roll. It was a bit cold, but that was to be expected. it was still filling at least.
'That smells nice mine, may I have some?' Vespereth asked, settling neatly back on her haunches beside the bench that Her's sat upon, flipping her wings to lay flush against her dark green back.
"Sorry lovely, but taking care of you is hard work, and I'm hungry. You already ate anyways." Vespereth gave her such a pitiful look, though, that with a sigh, Cass tore off a piece and gave it to her, making her dragon's eyes whirl happily as she daintily took the offered piece.
"You are so spoiled." Cass said with a snort, but stroked hers fondly as she finished off the first roll. Her dark eyes looked around as she heard the slosh of water, and saw someone mopping not to far away. The back that was turned towards her looked familiar, she realized.
"Layla?" she called out, curiously. She hadn't seen the girl since she'd impressed.

It was Cass. She noticed her the moment she entered the room; the dragon by her side made her difficult to miss... She didn't resent her, she knew that deep down she was happy for her but... but it was hard to feel that happiness over her own longing. Jealous? Yes. Resentful? Angry? No. She just wished it could have been her day, and yes if she could reverse their places she would. They'd talked about that, hadn't they? It seemed like forever ago...
Ah, and now Cass had noticed her. Layla found a smile for the weyrling and lent her mop against a table as she moved over to greet her; mopping could wait for now, she had a chance for some talk, a chance to be close to a dragon. Vespereth wasn't her's and never would be, but she could dream.
"Hi Cass, how are you?" Oh... now what should she say?... That meatroll looked rather good. "Emerald, would you please get me a meatroll?" As she spoke, she sent her little friend an image of a meatroll and gestured towards the platter; they could share it. Sitting down on the bench opposite Cass, she smiled again. "Vespereth certainly looks well, and you look... well, tired, but also well." It was hard work looking after a young dragon, that lesson had been firmly hammered home during candidate lessons. Worth it though. Worth every second.

"Long time no see!" Cass said, stuffing away any awkwardness she might feel in casually chatting with a girl who no doubt had been crushed when she had not impressed at the same hatching that Cass had been successful in. Nope, she'd be totally cool about this. She smiled at the other girl as she sat down across from her, watching as a green firelizard fetched a roll for her.
"Thanks, Layla." she said "Your little green is lovely." she observed, taking another bite of her own meatroll to quiet her roiling stomach.
"Um, soooo..." so much for being cool "What have you been up to? I haven't seen you around much." she asked curiously. She had heard that the girl had moved out of the candidate barracks, but not where she went after that. She knew that Layla was weyr born, so she assumed she must have taken up some other job here in the Weyr. Perhaps she had gone back to the kitchens. Cass felt a little sad then, catching her dragons attention.
'Why are you sad, mine?' Vespereth asked, sounding a little surprised. She hadn't been paying much attention to the girl's conversation, her blue eyes had been on the little green firelizard flitting about.
'I'm fine.' Cass assured her silently 'I guess I'm just a bit sad that Layla didn't get to impress. She's so nice, she sure deserved a dragon more than Y'ul.
Vespereth turned her gaze to the girl, looking her up and down, giving her a once over out of curiosity. She could tell that her's felt a certain fondness for the girl with the green firelizard, so she was willing to give her a chance.
'She seems nice, but she would not have been able to stand the pressure of being a fighter as you can, or even as Erath's can. Perhaps a gold will find her to her fancy some day.'
'Perhaps.' Cass replied with a slight smile before realizing that she must look a bit odd smiling like that, with a start, she turned her attention back to Layla, blushing slightly in embarrassment "Sorry about that. Vespereth was just saying that you seemed nice." The girl said, giving her the edited version of the conversation she'd had with her's.
