So, yesterday at about 1:00 PM, our band left to go to Concert Festival (I'm not sure if any other bands do this but anyway) and we performed two very hard pieces that we worked on for awhile. The 7th and 8th grade band played together on both of course and out of both of those (which was Wood County Celebration and Country Wildflowers) we got 1's (1 is the best and 4 is the worst. In between in fine) so we got Distinguished ratings for that. Then, we went to a back room and did a sightreading piece of which I forgot what it was called and out of 4 possible scores, we got a one again! Over all, we got Distinguished! It was the first time for 7th graders to do something like this and 8th graders, their second. We were all soo happy that we got such great scores on our first time doing something like this.
Do any bands other do something like this or the same thing?

We do! Well... All of Virginia does XD
We went like almost two week ago biggrin
7th graders got 1,2,1 on stage and a 1 in sight reading (overall 1). They played Funfest March, Foxwood Overture, and Lone Star Overture. I personally don't think that they deserved that because, well, they didn't play all too great. sad But I'm happy for them either way.
As for 8th grade, we weren't expecting our score to be great, but we didn't expect it to have 2's involved. sad We got 2,1,2 on stage and a 1 in sight reading(overall 2). We played Courage, The Pioneer Spirit, and Poet and Peasant Overture. Poet and Peasant is what really got us. We were so focused on the stuff that we always missed that the stuff we never missed messed up. sad Aside from that, after one section messed up, it was a giant domino effect.

lol. 7th and 8th grade played together for us. It was good at first for Country Wildflowers, but Wood County Celebration got us. Some of the judges commented on us and i think we got 1 and 2. One of the judges said that flutes needed to go buy a tuner XD
I didn't think the flutes were that bad, but overall, our group got a 1 and our high school I'm pretty sure got a 1 overall too. MOst of the other bands that were there played very out of tune and tempo and some of the groups that didn't wear all black and white and just wore dress clothes, some of the flutes needs longer dresses that were in the front row. When one girl sat down, her dress rode up above her knees and she had her legs wide open towards everyone. I felt so bad for her, but at the same time, I was thinking to myself "Gross!"

The judges were tough this year. Like two or three schools left with straight 1's. There's like 30+ schools in just our district -- and we're the smallest. Our highschool had an overall 2. They got 2,3,2 on stage. It was their first year playing grade five so eh. Although the band director at the highschool claims that they've ALWAYS played grade five. -sigh- Anyways!
Haha. Our flutes have the same issue. Maybe being the fact that the bottom of the section can play a regular (concert) Bb. Aside from that, only the top four flutes pay attention to pitch and one of them (haha, me) has a tuner (that the whole band shares biggrin even the BD sometimes) Ah. We had our typical middle uniforms - Polos and dress pants. Black for 8th and khaki for 7th. I feel bad for that one girl with the short dress. Poor thing having to face everyone.

It was pretty bad. We only have to wear a nice white shirt and black dress pants (both grades). High school wore tuxs and long black dresses (Man, some of those high school boys look pretty damn good in tuxs : D)
I play Bb Clarinet and i am second chair so I got to sit in the front row. It wasn't so bad, but it felt like everyone was staring at the front row. I was so nervous, but when we started playing, my nerves died down some.
We requested to go first and we got to warm up on stage. It sounded so weird playing on a stage like that. It was kind of muffled from my hearing but it was pretty loud too. I never thought that the whole exsperience would be so much fun though! It was such a rush of excitment after we were done! (By the way, it's Kentucky over here for us)

Haha. I know what you mean. Some of the guys at the highschool look really good in their tuxes biggrin
Cool. I'm a B-foot flute. I'm currently third chair TT-TT I was first chair then got bumped down for no reason sad I've sat in the first row since I've first started playing, so the crowd is something I'm pretty used to.
Oh. We did that last year, but there was actually a band that was supposed to go before us anyway and they had to leave early for something so we didn't get to go first last year sad Oh wells.
So, are you in eighth or seventh? Just wondering biggrin

lol. I agree with you and the high school boys : D
I'm in 7th grade. I am pretty kick a** for a Clarinet player. Or so I have been told : P
I was first chair but got bumped down to second D : I was very upset with that at first, but I'm ok now. We used to sit in the second row, but for Concert Festival, our band director moved us up (only the first three chairs) to the front row and moved the flutes that were siting there back where we were originally at. It was a good exsperience though and I really had fun.

In Florida, all competitions (Marching, Jazz, Concert, Orchestra, and Solo & Ensemble) are done by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA). There are three judges for concert in prepared piece, we play three(The levels determined by the size of the band) and it is always in the order of a march, then an overture, then any other piece, all these pieces are from a list of those allowed. Then we do sight reading, where we do one march and one overture, there is one judge. Then, though it is optional(My school does it every year), you do student conductor, where one band member conducts a prepared piece from a list, separate from the other prepared piece list, this takes place in the same room as the sight
All these are graded in three categories , which are then put into one grade by each judge. It is then gathered, and put into one grade for the part of the competition. Then, an overall grade is given for the two mandatory parts(Prepared and sight reading). The grading scale is as follows(From lowest to highest)- -Poor -Fair -Good -Excellent -Superior
We got straight Excellents because our clarinets were out of tune, our drummers were lazy, we didn't have a big enough low brass/woodwind (Some parts it was just me(one tenor sax) and two trombones!), and our trumpets were too loud.

We went and performed at Lovett Auditorium in Murray, KY (We are in Kentucky as you can tell. TCMS Band is us) so it wasn't as much as a thrill as all these places sound. Are ratings are given out as numbers....
1-Distinguished 2-Proficent 3-Apprentice 4-Novice
We had two 1's and one 1- because our flutes were very out of tune and trumets were too loud as well. The judges didn't find much wrong with the clarinets. When we got the comment papers back, one of the judges told the flutes to buy a tuner XDD

Yeah. Our trumpets and flutes were out of tune. We were in tune together as an ensemble though -- very well if I and the judges must say so ourselves XD. We have concert festival every year here in Va. I'm pretty sure it's hosted/sponsored by VABODA. Here's the link to the website with all the scores from each of the many different districts. biggrin I'm in District 6 -> Brookville Middle School 8th Grade Band smile http://www.vaboda.org/Festival/2010FestResults/FestResults.htmIt's nice to know that there's concert festival in other states besides Virginia biggrin
