Senshi: Sailor Arrakis: Senshi of Drought

Name: Olwen Bendis

Nicknames: Oli, Winnie

Age: 19

Birthday: December 12

Sign: Sagittarius

Blood Type: A

Fav. Food: Blueberry Bagels, Super dark coffee with cream, sugar and cinnamon

Hated Food: Latte's, Espressos.... what up with this ridiculous trend toward "Snob Coffee"? REALLY people!

School: Sovereign Heights

Hobbies:
-Knitting: Hobby for Old Ladies? Oli sure doesn't think so. She's a recent knitter and still struggling with some of the more complex stitches, not to mention anything with a complex count, but she's bound and determined she'll be knitting lace within the year, so she can do that lace shawl with the dragon pattern. She's no believer in sweater vests, but she loves big, bulky sweaters knit in wild, hand dyes and hand spun yarns just as much as ultra complex and delicate shawls, and owns a copy of 'Naughty Knits', just for the knitted straight jacket.
-Knitting offhand seems like a highly solitary activity, but Oli will happily explain that it's not. She Hangs out at the local Yarn stores on 'knit nights' and enjoys snacks and comparing crafts with crocheters, dyers, and spinners, knits baby hats in preemie and regular sizes for the hospital, and hangs out online on Ravelry.com, chatting with people from around the world about the fiber crafts they love. She also does knitted "Amigirumi"/Knitted toys, crocheted patterns are more common, but both are fun, and make some very unique gifts, especially when you modify the patterns to add monster arms and such.
She drifted into knitting after initially feeling the same way most people did, that it was an old boring hobby that made an endless quantity of plain socks and mittens. Then she looked up one day on the bus and saw a couple young women giggling over their needles. One of them was double knitting, making the most incredible scarf she'd ever seen, and the other.... the other was -lace knitting-. Following a chart that might as well have been hieroglyphics at the time, but which she has come to understand better, even though she hasn't yet managed to actually finish a chart or a lace work object.

Roleplaying: Sorry Boys... not THAT kind. Oli is a geek, and she loves to get involved with her favorite systems, though she'd rather do it in person than online. Her favorite emphasis is also on story, not on combat, although like her view on keeping the peace, combat does factor into the game. It just has to be more than go here-kill monster-get treasure. Who after all is supposed to believe that a giant scorpion could survive in a tomb unopened for a thousand years, and that it would be carrying a bunch of treasure. Where? In it's dental work?
She games with a group of other students that she's known for a while, so it's a group she knows well and is comfortable with.

Dune: Oli is a notable fan of Frank Herbert. She worships at the shrine of Frank Herbert, and her dream man is Duncan Idaho. She'd settle for one of his gholas though ((Clones for those who aren't familiar with the setting.)) If she had her way about it, "Fremmen" and "Bene Gesserit" would be career options, and she's been known to mutter the Bene Gesserit litany against pain for flu shots and dental work. Any port in a storm since she hates both.
Those members of the group who haven't read the series, or at least the original books, are learning more about it than they probably ever wanted to from discussions between those that have.
((DUNE: the series of books by Frank Herbert, basically making her a very enthusiastic sci-fi fiend, to the point where she can be obsessive or even annoying about it. Her RPG group used to include other enthusiasts, but I don't think those quests are active anymore.))

-Plushify Me Baby! She loves her knitted toys, and owns quite a few of them, in pretty much every fiber and color imaginable, but she also loves regular stuffed animals, including Beanie Babies (Most of them wearing tiny little knitted gear). She knows it's silly and kind of immature, but she just loves the super cute little safety eyes, and the snuggly qualities... and they're just SO CUTE. She's been known to volunteer to sit younger kids just for an excuse to sneak them off to that trendy 'make your own' plush place and treat them.

Gemstone: Tanzinite

Virtues:
-Passionate Believer: In spite of her Shy flaw, Oli is actually a young woman who believes what she believes with a passion. She believes in the intrinsic good in people, though she sometimes contradicts this by grouching to close friends about how much people can also suck. She's also a big believer in fighting to protect people, and has a great deal of respect for anyone who wants to stand up and protect the ones they love. Ghandi, in her mind, had a very nice idea, but she doesn't see it working in the world today. ((she was also very disappointed to find out that he was amazingly sexist.))

This curious virtue is currently often outshone by her Shyness and uncertainty, and leads to a lot of pent up energy. Oli has hidden her light under a bushel for so long, afraid of being mocked for it, that she feels very conspicuous letting it out in front of people she's not as familiar with. As time goes on however, and maturity and self confidence begin to bloom, so too will Oli's ability to show off her passionate side.

-Creative Thinker: Oli is the girl who figures out the weird angle to solve the puzzle... the way it probably wasn't supposed to be solved. In game and out, her solutions sometimes cause some interesting collateral damage, like using the wind shield scraper to break the ice on the driveway so people wouldn't fall when the salt ran out. Sadly at the expense of the scraper.

-Empathetic: In spite of her rougher edges, Oli feels your pain. She's been there herself, and suffered under the sharp tongues and metaphorical boot heels of others, and she hates it. The more she comes out from under the shadow of her own experiences with being bullied, the greater a campaigner Oli will be against it, and the madder she'll get if she finds out someone she's championed for has turned around and done the same to others. Fighting a fair fight is one thing, but, by God, other people aren't the rungs on your egos ladder!

Flaws:
-Self Doubt: Given time to think about almost anything, Oli tends to crawl into a pit of self doubt and become unsure of weather or not she can actually do the task at hand. Although she can accomplish quite a lot if she just forges ahead without stopping for this kind of contemplation, this likewise has problems, since she might miss something important, or just as difficult for her, find herself wondering afterward if maybe she should have done something different. She should have shouldn't she? Oh damn she's sure she screwed up.
This flaw, like her buried passion, is because she was often bullied growing up. She was the unpopular kid, the odd ball, and when you're constantly told you're wrong, it's easy to start to believe it, to the extent she's developed the bad habit of assuming people are just -going- to tell her she's screwed up.If she's unable to muscle through on the back of encouragement from her friends or a powerful burst of strong emotion, she risks starting onto this slippery slope and becoming increasingly flustered and upset, certain of her own error until someone helps pull her out. This flaw is more likely to affect her day to day life than an battle, since there's very little time to think about that sort of thing when you're trading punches, though afterward she may find herself wondering if she should have gone left instead of right, or punched instead of kicked, even though there's really no saying the outcome would have been better or even different.

-Shy: Oli wasn't the popular girl growing up, she's still getting used to the idea that it's OK to stand out a little, and that outside of the savage world of early school, being a little different isn't a criminal offense. As a result, she's an strange mixed bag with her wild hair and pierced nose, and a tendency to shrink into the corner of the party and talk to old friends exclusively, only reluctantly and awkwardly introducing herself to new faces. This will give her a particularly hard time if/when she's awakened as a Senshi, when, especially thanks to the Senshi/Nega glamor, there will be a lot of new faces.

Impulsive: The easiest way Oli has found to overcome her tendency to over think things is to just outright do it, no thinking required, and sometimes, especially if she's particularly riled up, this is exactly what she does, including saying whatever is on her mind when she's angry, or running on a lot of emotion (and maybe a lot of coffee) This tendency can lead to later regret, and sometimes a lot of apologies, and she's still struggling to find a healthy balance between these two behaviors.
Being an still somewhat shy girl, it usually takes a while to get her worked up enough to reach this point, and the signs of it coming are fairly easy to see once you know her, as she begins to tense and fidgit, her eyes lighting up with an inner fire before the entire thing culminates in either an impassioned speech in the middle of the auditorium against the wrongs suffered by others, or just standing up at the table during an gaming session and yelling her characters lines... even if they're in the middle of a restaurant.

Challenge: Dry up and blow away!

Attack #1
NAME: Arid Embrace:
-Arrakis wraps her arms around her opponent This attack inflicts unpleasant symptoms of dehydration: at this stage Muscle cramps and headache, and possible 'snowy' vision. Highly unpleasant but stronger opponents can probably fight through this, though cramps may limit some weapon usage or a chase.
-The effects of this attack linger until the subject can get a drink to rehydrate, since the subject is actually drained of some of their water, as a form of physical damage from the magical attack. Arrakis herself gains no benefit from drawing off the water, which is dispersed into the air.
-Time Span: This attack takes as long as required to wrap her arms around the foe, preferably around the body, but she'll grab an arm or a leg and give it a good squeeze if she has to. Both this and her Super level attack can be avoided by making sure she doesn't get close enough, or doesn't have a chance, to make the appropriate physical contact. A simple grab won't do it for embrace, it has to be both arms, making her attack dangerous, but with plenty of forewarning if you've seen her before. The effects begin as soon as she has made contact, but can be disrupted if they can break free before the 10 seconds for a full effect have passed, leaving them with a weaker version of the attack.

can be cast 4 times a night, but ONLY twice on any given victim. ((this prevents her stacking four rounds of dehydration on one foe and causing a threat to life this early.))

Attack #1a Arid Kiss: Similar to above, Arrakis must catch, and kiss, her opponent (it doesn't matter where she plants the kiss, though who's going to argue with a good dramatic lip lock for effect? wink ) The upgraded effects still include cramps and blurry vision, but also dizziness and -may- cause the victim to faint entirely. (But only at the whim of the other player) The fainting itself causes no harm if it occurs.

- -The effects of this attack linger until the subject can get a drink to rehydrate, since the subject is actually drained of some of their water, as a form of physical damage from the magical attack. Arrakis herself gains no benefit from drawing off the water, which is dispersed into the air.

-Time span: Outside of trying to actually catch an opponent and lay lips on them, this attack takes the time required to plant her lips on an opponent.

-This attack can be cast 3 times a night, only twice on any one opponent. Although it can be stacked with Arrid Embrace, the victim cannot become so dehydrated from the attack that their life is in danger, though it won't do their health any favors. If the victim is for any reason already dehydrated to the point of danger, the attack won't work. Otherwise the effects are instantaneous with the kiss.

Attack #2:
NAME: Passionate Desiccation: The only attack which doesn't require touch to work , Arrakis holds out her arms to her victim as if in supplication, and a blast of dry, parching air washes over both of them. The cone of dry air is dangerous for friend and foe alike, causing extreme desiccation of the victim.
The victim's heart rate and breathing rate accelerate sharply, and their body temperature becomes dangerously high as moisture is drawn out of them. Vision dims and the victim becomes delirious from lack of moisture. This is a small cone effect, but impacts only one victim at full strength, with a maximum of two, but for two, damage is halved, half for each victim.

CANNOT BE STACKED WITH PREVIOUS ATTACKS as this would be too life threatening.

Passionate Dessication may only be used once a night, and lasts for a maximum of two minutes -per night- (not per victim). At two minutes, Arrakis is out of the battle and may be borderline or actually hypothermic, depending on the environment.

The attack starts out narrow (approximately the width of Arrakis' own body) and spreads out quickly as it escapes Arrakis's vicinity, becoming an terrifying ten foot wide, fifteen foot long blast of parched air, barely visible under most circumstances as a heat shimmer. In extremely hot weather, this attack will be even harder to detect, but rain, fog, snow, or cold weather will make it's expanse much easier to note and give people a chance to get out of Dodge. Kind of hard to miss a blast of melting snow or vaporized fog, after all.

Effects on Arrakis Herself: Arrakis herself reacts as though she were directly, and not just magically, the source of heat. She is drained physically by the attack, worse depending how long she maintains it (similar to Nerissa's eternal attack), and becomes cold to the touch, suffering related shaking and vulnerability until she can recover body heat.

((Why the Touching: Before someone asks, I'll answer. The touching is supposed to be symbolic of drawing out the moisture from someone, personally. Secondarily, Mu Draconis, aka Arrakis is a binary star: two yellow-white stars in locked orbit, or in the case of Arrakis and her foe: Combat))

Fuku Ideas:

TOTALYHOT ENDE ART!!!!!!!
Ende really nailed some awesome ideas, though it's gonna come down to artists choice on pants vs skirt, and the shape of her footwear and tiara ((though a really subtle tiara would look the best I think.))

Appearance:

Hair: White, possibly a couple steaks died in pale pink and violet
See Hot Ende Art for Style

Eyes: Dark rich purple

Build: Oli is almost grown up, but she's no Dolly Parton. Her build is more of an understated hourglass.

Style: Old faded jeans spattered with paint from her D and D and War-hammer models, black turtlenecks with wildly colored and patterned sweaters or shawls or crazy tank tops, topped off with a necklace or two and a nose stud. In spite of the nose, her ears haven't been pierced yet.

Tidbits:

The Star: Arrakis and Mu Draconis

The Symptoms: Dehydration

Her attacks sound alright to me. Is Arid Embrace something like, the longer she's in contact with the foe, the worse the symptoms get?

As for her hobbies and personality, I'm curious how Oli makes friends, I guess? Like, D&D and tabletop games are social things, so does she seek them out on her own in spite of her shyness, or did she get into them because other friends drag her along? Or does she sort of hide behind her characters' personas, maybe, since she worries so much about herself?

I'm also curious about her beliefs and how they affect her hobbies, since Ghandi was into peaceful protest, and D&D and other such games are anything but. Does her passion for protecting others affect which armies she plays in Warhammer? Does she only play Clerics or Paladins? Does she partake in the violence of roleplay games at all; is it an acceptable outlet for violent urges, or does she play things like that in absence of codified rules for more peaceful roleplay settings?

That's an excellent idea for the embrace, I'll incorporate it, and I'll try and explain some more about the other things. I think there will soon be at least one other quest for someone else in her group too.

I rather like the attacks, they go well with the sphere. I think they're pretty straightforward, not to mention dangerous.

On Passionate Dessication, would it have any adverse effects on her as well if it's capable of affecting her allies too? Also wondering on how long the attacks can last? Do they fade away quickly or is there a lasting effect?

Parroting Kumo on the hobbies/making friends. Does she host them or go to others for them?

I was debating making them linger, at least until the subject can drink something, but I don't know if that would be seen as too OP

Oh man good luck getting her! Sebastian needs his friends. ;; /duneshi ftw

I also like the long skirt idea for the fuku, but maybe she wears pants/leggings under it? It's kind of hard to run and fight when dressed like that, which is why Selenite's got that loops hanging from her belt - it's so she can roll the skirt up to more easily fight or run!

Oooh. Leggings would be a big problem Solver. biggrin
I've been kinda wondering how she's going to work up the nerve to jump roof tops with a skirt on. XD

I think I'll have to use that idea! <3
