Whenever Virgo felt down, she would remind herself of starving children in Somalia, of hurricanes in Louisiana, bombings on the London metro. Usually this worked; her life definitely seemed to be better than the people caught in those situations. She had no reason, she thought, to be sad. Her parents were both alive, successful, and loving. She had two sets of parents. Her brothers were amazing and always looked out for her. Her Captain was proud of her, thought she had spunk, her Princess thought she was brave. All good things. Things she had thought no one in the world would ever apply to her.

Still she found herself sitting on a bench on a quiet street in East Heights, crying as quietly as she could into her hands. What can you do, he'd said. You're just a high school girl. She couldn't even lie well enough to make up some kind of story. Mackenzie could have done it. Giselle would have just stared the doctor into submission. They wouldn't have even thought about telling him anything at all.

Now no one thought she should patrol--she saw it, in the stares they directed her way. That was why, instead of asking Leo or Gemini to patrol with her, she had snuck out alone. She wasn't going to fight any monsters; she was just going to sit. Being a senshi scared people off, and she didn't exactly want to be consoled.

Scylla, telling her she wasn't going to do any good.

"Je sais," she said, sniffling. She knew she was doing no one any good at all.

The tiny brunette was something of an enigma, showing up when she was least expected or wanted, seemingly out of the blue. In truth, Little Star had taken up residence in a quaint little alley, beside a kindly old woman who jittered a bit too much, and an old man who looked at her blearily and asked her if she had any liquor.

She was a little bit dirty, her fuku a bit grimy, her wings not exactly white anymore. Still, she approached the other Senshi with a smile on her face, and clambered up on the bench beside her, sitting too close for conventional manners.

"Hnnh!" She murmered at Virgo, and patted her on the leg.

She intended to ignore the person who took the space next to her. This might have gone over well if the tiny brunette hadn't sat so close, or touched her; actually, all right, it was more the size of the hand. Virgo sniffed a little more, wiped her eyes and then looked to the child sitting next to her. There hadn't been anyone on the street last time she'd looked; and checking north and south, no one now.

"Where are your parents," she asked, voice still a little bit shaky.

Then, in a classic case of 'only seeing what you expect to see, and then seeing what you didn't' she noticed the tiara. The wings. The sailor fuku. And the shiny, opalescent staff. Apparently the lunars had taken to awakening little girls; Virgo blinked a few times, wondered if it wasn't the prolonged crying jag making her see things. No; the girl was still there when she opened her eyes again. So young!

She should just send the girl home, but Virgo was a Zodiac, and the Zodiacs protected Moon senshi. Which was what the little girl had to be, right? Just a... smaller... senshi than she was used to. She put one arm around the little senshi, tried to dust some of the dirt off her cute little skirt. It looked like it was ground in, was the pity. "Don't worry," she said, "You're safe with me. I'm a Zodiac." Pause, and then in a very un-Virgo tone, "Not a very good one, but I am."

Little Star just stared at Virgo cocking her head at "parents"; a few people had asked her this question, but Little Star had no idea what they were talking about. Little Star really only knew that she was looking for something, and unfortunately for both of them, Virgo wasn't it.

But it was cold and Virgo was crying and Little Star was entirely too curious. Standing up on the bench, Little Star gingerly grasped Virgo's face and turned her towards her, squishing Virgo's cheeks a little humourously.

Little Star's eyebrows were set and she was pouting a bit, and you could feel the gears working in her head before she opened her mouth.

"Good one," She repeated in a lisping, soft voice. She smiled winningly up at Virgo.

Did the little girl not talk? Virgo tilted her head right back, her smile taking on a bit of bemusement as she waited; a couple more tears escaped, but the Zodiac was an adept at catching them before they smudged her makeup (it was a small mercy her uniform involved no makeup). She puffed out her cheeks, a watery giggle escaping. Little kids were so cute.

"No," she said, shaking her head at the small senshi. "Not really." She'd taken a class in the college in France, philosophy, and they'd said that something was only 'good' if it did what it was intended. The Zodiac Guard was supposed to guard. The Princess lost her Crystal, ergo, Virgo had failed. Every senshi that ended up in the hospital was her fault, because she wasn't good. "I'm trying, though. That's what counts, right?" Why did she really want the little girl to... nod, or something?

Virgo rubbed at her eyes again. Now was not a time to indulge in adolescent theatrics! "You're a good one. The apple of someone's eye, I think is what they say?" And she smiled again, gently tugging one of Little Star's pigtails. Where were the little girl's parents? Virgo looked down the street, puzzled. It was quiet and empty.

It was cold outside, Spring only barely sprung, and Little Star nodded as she shivered, rubbing up against Virgo as if she could take on some of her body heat with a tight enough hug. She was a baby, but she smelled of the street, and of despair and crushed hope, but she smiled through all of it as if she didn't care-- or was just too young, or too innocent, to realize.

Little Star had no idea what Virgo was talking about concerning apples and eyes, and she just looked at her blankly, before yawning widely, and leaning even closer to Virgo, close to tipping over in to her lap.

The last thing she had eaten was the strange flat cake the girl with the big hair had given her the dark before, and she was hungry, but hadn't figured out how to ask for food unless said food was out and she could gape at people like a tiny bird.

"Good one," Little Star confirmed, her stomach grumbling, flopping in to Virgo's lap.

Virgo frowned at the brunette laying across her lap. Shivering and tummy grumbling? She might not be too good at crystal-saving, or at fighting, but she sure as hell could fix a little girl who was cold and hungry. Her wallet and an energy bar were in her coat pocket, but she would have to drop henshin and she didn't want to scare the little girl. Plus, faster this way. Smiling--for true now, the light of purpose temporarily back--she gathered up Little Star and stood.

"Yes, you are," agreed Virgo; "the best one. Are you hungry?" Without waiting for an answer, she started to walk back towards Crystal. There was a safe place there; food, and it was warm, which were both things the small senshi needed.

Reminded of that, she sped up a little. The baby senshi did not deserve to be left in the cold, ever. (She was too cute.)

Thankfully for Virgo, her trip back to Crystal was uneventful, her passenger lulled to sleep by Virgo's quick pace. It was right before curfew, and most girls were already in their rooms, only their desk light's glimmering under their doors. Elke Arma was the one who entered the gates of Crystal Academy, her tiny passenger resting on her hip.

There were footsteps coming from the opposite direction, one pair brisk, the other soft and a bit harried. Turning the corner were Hero and Aurelia, both murmuring good night to Elke, Hero reaching to squeeze Elke's shoulder. They passed Elke, still talking between themselves, Aurelia's black book nowhere to be seen.

That was, until Hero stopped dead in her tracks, and turned (about-face!), a look of abject consternation on her face.

"Miss Arma, is that a child on your person?"

Aurelia was less quick on the uptake, walking several paces before noticing that Hero was not walking with her.

"Miss Arma, should we continue this conversation elsewhere? Preferably in your rooms?"

The sound of girls laughing echoed down the hall.

To tell the truth, Elke's captain had had a particular expression on her face throughout the entire corridor exchange: it was D:, a definite D:. 'Consternation' had begun to cover it. Both Aurelia and Hero had sequestered Elke into her dormitory room, which thankfully or unthankfully did not have Serenade in it at that particular time as their Princess was having a late-night shower (had she done something wrong? Had she done something dreadful?) but their Captain was looking at the tiny stranger with befuddlement.

It was hard not to feel the pull of the miniature senshi, though. Aurelia was sitting her down on the bed and fussing a little bit. You never expected Aurelia to fuss over anything. Elke had protested that food came first, and from within her bag Capricorn had readily pulled out a Tupperware tub of chicken pasta that she was apparently keeping for a late-night snack. With a small fork she was helping the little girl eat. Hero's expression remained the same.

"Elke," she said -- had she really become her first name? To the Captain? -- "Where did you find this?"

"Her," said the other Zodiac soldier, still wrangling food. Apparently the little girl was still considering the question of pasta.

"Less semantics, Miss Thorne. Did anyone see you come into the dorms?"

She let herself be sequestered, thinking that she had never seen Hero make that face before. Similar faces, maybe. Not quite that one, though, and she wished she had her camera to record this momentous occasion. She had, in fact, picked up her Nikon the second they'd stepped inside her room. Though she had a good angle and good light, she hadn't raised it to capture the dumbfounded look. It kind of seemed like that would be one of the Worst Ideas Ever, at least right now.

Now she was bracketing the little senshi, trying without avail to rub some of the grime from the brown curls. No effect, unfortunately--could senshi take baths? Would that help?

The Zodiac soldier startled at her name, and smiled sheepishly at Hero. "In the street," she said, "by herself--she was hungry, so I--no, no one saw me, I don't think, the secretary wasn't there."

She was looking at Hero, a little guilty. "She just came up to me. I didn't... steal her or anything."

Aurelia had fallen in to making plane noises, zipping the fork full of pasta around the little girl's head, and finally plunging it in to the "hanger". The little girl chewed thoughtfully and then opened her mouth again, eyes bright. Apparently, the pasta had passed the taste test.

Later, Aurelia would deny that she had ever stooped so low as to have made noises or fussed over anything at all. But there she was, pulling out wipes from her purse (the girl was ready for any and all emergencies, a purse that would make "Let's Make a Deal!" proud) and gently scrubbing at her face while the girl scrunched it up, trying in vain to get away from Aurelia's vice-like grip on her arm.

"I don't know what to do with this, Miss Barrett. She has wings," this was a point of contention with Aurelia, though there were others, like "child", "senshi", "street", "Can you talk?"

"Talk!" The little girl parroted, eying the rest of the pasta hungrily.

Looking up at Miss Barrett and Miss Arma, Aurelia shrugged and continued feeding the child.

"You did well Miss Arma, you definitely should not have left her on the street. That was good of you-- kind of you."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:29 pm

"Kind? Yes," said their Captain. "Practical? This is a fully transformed senshi, Elke. God only knows who could be sensing her right now."

Actually, there didn't seem to be a lot of energy coming off the little girl in the first place. It was subtle. A hint of warmth. A fully transformed senshi, but not blaring at full bore. Seeing her expression Hero amended: "There's nothing to do for it now. Miss Thorne."

'Miss Thorne' was still busy making airplanes into the little girl's mouth. She was yumming up the pasta with enthusiasm now, gaping like a baby bird expectantly for the next bite as the plastic spork got reloaded. She'd put up manfully with the face-wiping. It was always a little amazing, exactly how much Aurelia could multitask. "Yes?"

"If you could, please go and politely request Mi -- Miss Jacobs' phone. She'll still be awake." One of Aurelia's eyebrows had lifted. "Politely. No, wait: please ask if she could ask Luna to stop by Chronos' room, that's better."

It was a little arrogant in the first place to assume that Miriam would have done all this and not ask questions, and illogical to assume that Aurelia wouldn't have done what Aurelia always did: explain, tersely. Soldier Virgo had taken on the onerous duty of feeding the small senshi (and their Captain wished that the Princess would come back to her room) when, unsurprisingly, the door reopened and Miriam Jacobs accompanied Aurelia through it.

Hero had been pacing. Elke was on her knees scooping up chicken pieces, cooing baby babble. And on the bed was a little henshined girl with wings who did not look the least bit put out at any of it, though in another life she had looked into the face of Captain Kunzite and gargled blood in her face.

(If there was red on her mouth now, it was pasta sauce.)

"I should've guessed," said the first Zodiac, who hadn't even noticed that her roomie wasn't paying any attention to her. "Thank you for coming, Jacobs -- Jacobs?"

Hero's roommate had stayed frozen in the doorway. This wasn't too out of the ordinary for her -- she was the kind of person who appeared frozen a lot, whether in doorways or out of them, and it was not too odd that she had happened to be in a doorway in this instance of frozenness. What was odd was that she'd been stopped in her tracks by the sight of the child senshi.

She'd gone white. She looked, in point of fact, like she'd seen a ghost. Her hand was curled around the doorframe, and it stayed there, white-knuckled, while Hero and Aurelia and Elke stared at her and the little girl munched.

"Jacobs?" repeated Hero.

Miriam blinked and double-blinked. Her other hand was shaking a little. "Hero, that's Sailor Nova," she said. "I don't know how or what, but that's Sailor Nova. I'm a lot of things but I'm not a liar," her voice was a very dull monotone, "and I'm not wrong."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 8:03 pm

As far as 'evenings that started out with bawling your eyes out on a street bench' went, this one was pretty good. Elke had decided taking a picture of the little senshi was a bad idea--her family wouldn't recognize her, for one, and for another Aurelia might have died of shame if anyone ever had proof of her cooing over anything. She glowed at the compliments, and then looked to the little girl. "I dunno, she repeated some of what I said..."

She looked down at her knees, and then said, "She can't be older than four, she can't even talk," like it excused putting her Princess in danger. It didn't, especially not right now, but there were three Zodiacs there. She doubted anything bad could happen, but was still grateful for the distraction of feeding the small senshi. It was something of a new experience--she didn't have any little siblings at all. Feeding children was not on her resume (it was now).

At Miriam's entrance, she looked up and tilted her head a bit in confusion. Well, seeing a little girl done up like a senshi had to be something of a shock, but--

"Sailor Nova," she repeated, trying to remember where she'd heard that name before. Then she asked, "Are you okay?" It looked kind of like Miriam was going to pass out, or something.

Aurelia had been patting Elke's shoulder with a tentative hand, trying to be "comforting" but feeling entirely awkward about it. At the mention of Nova's name she directed her gaze over to Miriam Jacobs.

"That can't be right," Aurelia snapped, ignoring the fact that Miriam Jacob's had just said otherwise, "Luna had put her name on the board under deceased. Carried on about her a bit too, looked stricken-- you can't honestly believe that this child is one and the same?"

Even though the words coming out of her mouth were sure, she was sure that this was inconceivable, unfathomable, but then again... then again, they were all Sailor Scouts. Then again, anything was possible, just look at the Zodiacs. They had lived, and died, over and over again, more than the others. More mistakes than the others too, but that was alright. They had lived (and died) and learned, and maybe the Lunar Court could learn from the Zodiacs' mistakes.

The little girl had slid off Elke's bed and walked resolutely towards Miriam Jacobs, before burying her face in her knees.

"Okay." Her voice came out a bit muffled.
