I just wanted to know how many people are going to the same thing I'm going through.Everyone complimenting you, always telling you you're the best and your band directors always expecting more out of you. I mean I'm only a freshman I've not had as much musical experience as much as the only trumpets in my section.

I'm one of the best, but not the best, but my conductor praises me alot (I think it has something to do with me getting third chair last year even though I began back in sept, o-O; i was even in a better chair then this other girl in the other woodwind class...she was fifth chair)

and alot of people say that I should be first chair, they keep on praising me, it pressures me alot sad but would you rather be invisible and be called bob for the rest of your life o_O;??

i know what you mean! I may not be the best, I'm second chair in the highest band as a sophomore, but everyone is always like "Your so good" and whatnot and expect you to be the greatest thing ever. But sometimes it's ok to hear the praise.

i'm first chair in our section this year, but i already know at least two people who are a lot better than i am.

Well I'm a clarinet and its kinda hard to be one of the best in my band, seeing how the 1st chair was winner of the Spotlight award (though he did win as an alto sax, but he can play the clarinet really well too).

When I was a freshman, I was 2nd out of everyone.

This year, I'm the same, yet our first flute always plays piccolo, so I'm virtually principle chair.

I'm the one who tunes the section, they ask me to play measures they're uncertain about, they ask me questions, I'm always complimented...

And even more is expected of me because I'm good enough of a musician to double on the tenor sax, and still manage to keep my spot in the wind ensemble.

I used to be... but then... I moved into symphonic band with a girl who's been on the oboe for what seems like 3 years

I am not the best, my friend the section leader is, then the prodigy bassoon/clarinet freshman, then me. the prodigy is part of a family with 3 kids in our marching band all prodigies. good for the band, not for me, however I am 1st clarinet the freshman is louder and can memorize alot faster than I can, she also practices, I wonder how it'd be if I practiced more. mmh... idea

As a freshman and underdog, it is very hard to come out on top and not be pressured to remain there. In my first week of knowing that I was the second best clarinet in the entire high school band program, I was getting hateful stares and hearing all kinds of things about how they were going to challenge me, etc. Nothing ever happened, and I have been accepted in the position.

But there is always someone better, so you just have to keep working on things. Even if you get praise, what if there's some young phenom coming up and you're not prepared? You have to be your own toughest critic and keep challenging yourself to be better.

I'm the best 7th grader trumpet in our 7th/8th band, but I don't like to amite it. I don't want to turn into one of thoes jerky trumpet people I guess. Im always saying I suck, but everyone is like "Your the best." I have confidence problems, I know.

yeah...I'm the best in my section. It was pretty funny. I've only been playing clarinet for about a year, walk into the band's clarinet section, and play better than all of them on the first day. Ahh...it feels good to be hated. But then again, one of my best friends is part of that section and really doesn't mind, so I guess it wasn't THAT bad.

what are you talking about? My conductor never praises me. Whenever one of my flutes in my section screws up in rehersals he always blames the first chair flute becuase i guess i'm just conviently there
