I'm in Japan as an exchange student atm and Death Note really is quite popular in Japan... Lately there have been lots of tests (pre-winter break testing) so everyone's been studying... but when I first came and everyone was bringing mangas to school (even though it's against the school rules... do de do~ ninja ) I saw Death Note a number of times... I've also seen people in the train reading it and stuff... Unfortunately I go to an all girls school so I don't really know if guys like it or not but girls seems to enjoy it...
One of my friends (from Japan) said she started to read it but it was too confusing so she stopped XD I wonder if it was just the Japanese or if she just didn't get it... because when I read Death Note (in English) I had no problems....... I've heard similar comments ("It's really hard to understand", etc.) a lot here.....
Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents, sorry I haven't posted or been on lately haha... I'm wayyyyyy behind in Death Note... only read up to Chapter 61 XD eek!

Do you mean the japanese wording is hard to understand or the storyline itself? One of my friends read the first chapter and said it was too boring... XD

One of my friends says Death Note "makes you think". Which, apparently, is good.
I understand most of it, but sometimes I just have to take the manga's word for stuff. x) I love it, though~ the plot is hard to understand, yes. And harder to explain. )x
We're getting a japanese exchange student over here in a while. I should bug her about Death Note. O0; ... or not. D: -shrug-

[ I myself have to go back and read things twice to understand it.] xd
[ It's not that it's hard to understand, it's just that it's a very busy manga and ou have to remember a lot.]

I don't think it's that hard to understand, then again maybe things get more complicated after the third book. *shrug*

I think it's a pretty straight forward plot, but it gets hard to accurately explain all the characters and their motives...

Sometimes I have to read it again to actually understand what they are talking about. And I sometimes think....where are these assumptions coming from?

I dont think its hard to understand at all, and its definitly not boring. A lot of my friends have started reading it recently and none of them had any issuse either.
