Ellie had a birthday coming up.
Ellie was not a big fan of celebrating her birthday. Every one of her friends should have known this.
Jared was an absolute idiot. For some reason, he had it set in his mind that he was going to do something "awesome" for Ellie's birthday. And that "awesome" thing was drag her along to play some lazer tag.
Lazer tag wasn't too much of a drag, if you could ignore the screaming bratty kids. God, the kids were all starting to look like that obnoxious alien chick she had been encountering as Sailor Iris.
"...'sup Ellie?"
The blonde girl shook her head slightly as her friend attempted to snap her back to reality. "Oh nothin'... jus' thinkin' 'bout some random crap..."
Jared, her current companion looked at her for a moment, mouth pressed shut. He knew better than to bug her about something if she wasn't going to offer it up on her own. He eventually let out a sigh, puffing some of his long blonde bangs out of his face. "Well, we've got another 15 minutes until our group is up. Ya wanna screw around in the arcade?"
The girl's golden eyes flickered across the arcade. There were a lot of kids swarming around the games that spewed out tickets for prizes, and a small batch of tweens that were hanging around the ever popular dance-games. How those games had ever come to being popular, she had no clue. Fortunately, she did find a few games that weren't very crowded. Racing games, first player shooters, and a few of the really old-school arcade games were relatively untouched by the current Lazer tag populous.
"Well, I'm probably a bit rusty, so maybe some extra shooting practice will do me some good!" The girl grinned and rather easily ran over to one of the games, pulling out the plastic gun, spinning around and pretending to shoot it at her friend.
"Pow! Right in tha' kisser!"

Amelia loved the arcade, it was full of games what was there not to love? It was a place she could go, and usually not have to even worry about being hit on. Arcades were full of kids, and guys who were too geeky and socially awkward to flirt with her. Of course she got the few that tried anyway, she was a girl in an arcade, that alone made her a target, and to make it worse she was an attractive girl in an arcade. She usually managed to brush them off though, she didn't do the whole dating thing, she didn't even do the flirting thing.
Today's jaunt to the arcade found Amelia in front of an old Frogger machine, brows furrowed as she guided the frogs across roads and rivers, biting her bottom lip as she narrowly avoided dying. She was on the last level and the game was getting pretty intense, but Amelia loved Frogger and she was pretty good at it. When she managed to get all five frogs across she grinned pumping her fist in the air. "Oh yeah! Take that Frogger, who's Queen of the arcade now?" When she realized she was nearly yelling at the machine she shut her mouth. The eighteen year old looked around sheepishly, hoping no one was around to witness her little outburst. Unfortunately for her there was a girl and her, boyfriend? standing at a shooting game not so far away. "Oh, uh, don't mind me." Amelia laughed weakly.
Rubbing the back of her head she turned back to her machine, maybe they wouldn't comment on her childish behaviour. The girl was pointing an arcade at her friend after all, it's not like she was the only childish one. Digging in her pocket her fingers fished for anymore quarters. Pulling out her hand she looked down into her palm and frowned, three pennies a dime and some pocket lint, not exactly what she was looking for.

Ellie would have needed to be blind and deaf to miss that display. Maybe it was just her timing, but when she turned to shoot her friend, she managed to see the fist pumping and hear the crowing of some obvious regular to this arcade. Jared even spun around to take note of the gloating. The boy laughed, but the girl merely just grinned, pointing the plastic gun at the girl.
"You show that game who's boss!" No sarcasm, no laughing, it almost seemed as if the blonde had some sort of mutual understanding for the feeling. After offering her encouragement, the tomboy spun back around to face her own game.
Jared, knowing that he was paying for stuff today since it was his present to his friend, leaned down and slid a coin in the slot. He wanted to stay down for a bit longer so he could look at the tomboy's legs, but he had been down this road too many times. He didn't need a headache from getting bonked on the head by his friend.
Ellie pressed the button to accept her mission as a copper. This wasn't quite like the FPS games at home, but it really didn't matter. The girl straightened her arm and began with the digital "training exercises."

The little plastic trigger clicked under her finger as she took a couple shots for the training section. At least it was one of those types of guns that clicked. It meant you could tell when you hit the button, rather than just assume you hit it when you hadn't. Ellie seemed to have a knack for this sort of thing, for the training rounds were done rather quickly.
Jared reached in his pocket and felt the small lump of coins that jangled vaguely between his fingers. If it had been Ellie or Zuniga, coins would have been popped out, no questions asked. However, this was his present to Ellie. "Umm..." he uttered, hedging a bit until the girl playing the shooter spoke up for him.
"Yeah, he'll give ya some... go on, Jared."
She didn't even bother to look away from the screen, for things were finally starting to pick up in pace.
The boy fumbled slightly at the directions, but soon enough, two quarters were in his palm, hovering over the dark-haired girl's hand. "Uh, here ya go..." Once this short girl's hand was opened, he'd drop the change into her hand. "Have fun?"

Amelia was slightly impressed by the speed that the girl was working her way through the game. "You're pretty good," It was an off-hand comment said in between the two decided to give her quarters. She looked to the boy, Jared that's what the blonde called him and smiled. "Thanks so much!" She reached into her back pocket and pulled out a one dollar bill. She reached out with her free hand, palm up to receive the quarters. Her other hand offered him the dollar bill, he was only giving her fifty cents, but she figured that the other fifty cents were a 'not having to walk all the way to the front counter' fee. Frogger only took a quarter, so two quarters were more than enough. "Oh I will, if those frogs think they can get the best of me, they're wrong." She laughed, she had a vendetta against the Frogger machine, for every time she won she lost three times. It was a challenging game, that Frogger.

Ellie's tone was indifferent as she pointed out what was obvious to herself. "Naw, I'm kinda rusty actually." She could have looked back and offered a grin or an explanation was to how she was rusty, but "bad guys" were popping up on her screen, which meant she had to shoot them.
There was a consistent clicking sound filling the air immediately around her. She was well practiced and knew exactly how many clicks it took for her to aim and click the gun towards the bottom right hand corner to reload the imaginary gun. If one was still watching, the pixelated villains were going down left and right, but occasionally she'd miss one for the first shot.
Jared was a push over. The exchange had been made, and now he had 50 cents more than he was supposed to. Nervously, he edged up to the Frogger machine and without a word, he slid two more quarters on the top of the machine. Just as silently, he slid back to his friend's side.
"Did she ask fer her money back?"
The boy's face turned completely red. He could never get away with anything with Ellie around. Even completely involved in a game, she knew exactly what he had done.

Bang, bang, bang.
"Go by Ellie."
Bang, bang, bang.
"And th'gay-tard over there's Jared."
From the racing game, the blonde boy let out a disapproving "Hey!!!" He was sadly used to this sort of treatment, but it didn't make it any less annoying. Both of them knew he had a crush on Ellie. He was the furthest thing from gay.
Yet, the tomboy still insisted on calling him that time and again.
Even though her friend sounded upset, the blonde girl with the plastic gun didn't bother to look. She continued to play the game. The advantage to having this sort of game was that the player didn't pay attention merely to one spot on the screen, but rather, they had to notice everything going on. So it wasn't hard to tell this girl also knew how to play this sort of game.
"Yer not bad at this," was Ellie's casual observation as they easily completed their first level together.
