Have you ever stared at your post in a roleplay with a friend and said, "This is horrible. But what else can I do?"?

Then look no further. Here is the place to make yourself a better RPer, with complementary tips on Post Layouts and Names!
// Please remember, I'm not going to make this place UBER spiffy, I'm not up to making 5000+ banners in Photoshop right now, so I'm sticking to one post and no banners.

Unless, of course, someone else makes one. Then I'll be happy to use it.

Building Your Character

First off, you don't want something overly used like being a jerk who really wants some love because you lost your mama, or being a super uber shy girl thats so kawaii desu that I wanna puke. NonononononononononononoNO. I don't care how many times you try to convince me, but it'll never happen.

First off, you want a back story. What was her life before now? Try to remember to not make it too cliche, and not to similar to one in an anime you watched. Make it original. For example, my OC for Ouran Host Club is that she is afraid of being picked on because she look's so much like a guy because of how she dresses and her near-zero breasts, so she just moved to another school and registered as a guy entirely.

See? How similar is that to Haruhi's. I will admit, they both look like guys, but this was an OC I had before I watched the anime, so I thought it fit. But see? She isn't going to break any vases, or probably even join the Host Club in the first place. Let that be lesson!

Personality
Now, what does your character act like? As said earlier, NO KAWAII DESU-CHAN. Your character can't be a waitress and totally be spoiled to crap. Do spoiled children even work? I doubt it. Make it fit your character, and try to make it a bit different than some would expect. I, however, can't give much tips on this part of the guide, seeing as I don't have much for myself.

Appearance
Now, it's time for you to pick out a picture for your character. And I understand that this means Google search time, but before you go strutting over there, here are three tips that always keep the picture as perfect as possible:

-- Face displays their personality
-- Looks like what your character might dress up as, ect, a tomboy might where a hat and a lot of boyish clothing, whether she has boobs or not, is up to you.
-- Actually is good-ish quality, though I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I suppose that is more of an opinion kind of thing.

Name
Last, but certainly not least, the name. Don't use something over used, like Sara or Ichigo or something. Make it random, almost, unless it should have a meaning. My OHC OC's name is Yukari, something I though of at the top of my head. One of my other characters, Minaki Kurone, well her last name means "black song", and she's a gothic singer. See what I mean?

Phaeton
I have a small disagreement. Common names aren't so much of a hazard. Not everybody names their kids some fancy unheard of name. The anticipatory naming to foreshadow a child's future accurately is pretty uncommon.

I think a general rule of thumb would be what were that character's parents like, and what sort of cultural influences would convince them to choose a name for their child. Most notably German parents would much more likely name their daughter Flora rather than Hinata.

I'm not attacking you or anything but Sara (Sarah I'm assuming in particular) isn't an uncommon name. It's actually Hebrew meaning "Noble Lady" or something like that.

Now if that character legally changed their name then all bets are off but I'm fairly sure kids can't do that.

Thank you to this lady for correcting me :]

So now that you've read through this, I guess I'm done. If there's anything you think is added, go ahead and post and I'll get on it.
