User ImageLife had been terribly confusing for Toamna lately. She had met a strange, shaggy-maned dragon who had gotten rather friendly with her, her stomach had swollen to an enormous size and now...Now her abdomen was back to its normal size but only because three round objects had expelled themselves from it. She was so conflicted, a part of her said to stay with these mysterious objects, to keep them safe, but the other part was screaming for her to run and leave them behind. They weren't food, they didn't even seem alive, more like strangely colored rocks more than anything else. So, why should she remain?

She shouldn't. That screaming part of her won the fight and she quickly flipped around to leave these things to their fate. Weaving through the trees as she trotted away, Toamna couldn't help but feel as if something was wrong with this. She should go back, stay with the weird rocks until....until something. But what? Why? This was all so confusing and terrifying to the young dragon. She stopped and looked back, still able to see three, oval-shaped objects behind her.

Griffin had been following the lonely female he'd impregnated that strange night, and her unnatural silence worried him as much as her confusion about their eggs. How sheltered was this female? Had she never met any other dragons? All these thoughts worried him about the future of their eggs, and it was only partially this worry that drove him to stay with the female. After all, he wasn't the sort to leave his children without a father, and he'd always intended to be with the children he was sure he'd love.

Sighing as she naively trotted away from their defenseless eggs, he stepped out from the trees, nosed them as close together as possible, and laid down around them, carefully making sure all three were within the length of his body, safe and warm. Their mother was probably a first-time mother in addition to being such a hermit that she seemed to know not even speech. He'd found her very lovely and delightfully shy at first, but this naivete was quite frankly a little scary now. Deep down inside, he knew that he wanted to help her, whenever he was close enough to do so, if nothing else than for the childrens' sake.

Toamna's whole body tensed as she saw a figure approach the eggs she had produced. She lowered herself towards the ground as an instinct kicked in and told her to protect the eggs, to scoot closer and try to chase off this figure. But after a couple steps she realized what she was doing and immediately stopped. Why was she doing this? Why did she feel such a need to protect those lifeless rocks? Her predicament was starting to frustrate Toamna a great deal.

Suddenly, she realized who the figure near the eggs was. It was the shaggy-maned male she had spent that night with. As soon as she realized this she began creeping closer again. She was never a social dragon, but something about this one intrigued her, told her there wasn't any danger being around him. Not to mention that the night they had spent together had been something Toamna had never experienced before. It had been strange, but it felt right, like it was something she was supposed to do. She continued to creep closer until she was but a small distance away then stopped, watching him intently.

Griffin noted the eggs' mother approaching stealthily and warily. Apparently, instinct had kicked in, but he opted to pay her no mind on the surface, on the off-chance that she'd be spooked by attention and instead decided to sing an old lullaby he'd heard once in passing to their eggs.

"Maiden, maiden, tell me true:
What can grow without the dew?
What can burn for years and years?
What can cry and shed no tears?

Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika.
Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika.
Tumbalalaika, tumbalalaika, tumbalalaika, tumbalalai.

Listen, I've an answer for you:
Stones can grow without the dew;
Love can burn for years and years;
Hearts can cry and shed no tears.

Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika.
Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika.
Tumbalalaika, tumbalalaika, tumbalalaika, tumbalalai."

She flinched as he began to sing, thinking he had noticed her. But as he seemed to pay her no mind and the tune of the song reached her ears she relaxed a bit. The song was interesting, unlike anything she had heard before, and it willed her to get closer. It was so soothing and only made the feeling of a lack of danger around Griffin even more so. By the time he had finished the song she was only a few yards away, still low to the ground and watching him carefully but certainly not as tense as she was when first spotting him. She noticed he was wrapped around the rocks and wondered if he had the same feeling that they should be protected.

Griffin had to swallow the subtle smile tugging at the corner of his lips so as to not startle the female. Another song. The next song that crossed his mind was a love song he'd sometimes heard his father sing when his parents were either in "that mood" or there had been some argument they'd been trying to resolve. Such gently and deeply romantic songs had never been his style, but that had always made this song valuable.

You fill up my senses like a night in the forest,
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain,
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean,
You fill up my senses, come fill me again.

Come let me love you, let me give my love to you,
Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms,
Let me lay down beside you, let me always be with you,
Come let me love you, come love me again.

You fill up my senses like a night in the forest,
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain,
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean,
You fill up my senses, come fill me again.

Toamna couldn't resist the sound of Griffin's voice. It was like a human calling to its well-trained pet dog. She continued to crawl closer to him until she was practically at his side, belly so low to the ground that she disturbed the decaying leaves from the previous fall with it. In spite of her close proximity, she still believed he was ignorant of her presence and now that she was close she wasn't exactly sure what to do. She didn't want to make herself known to him, she was afraid of what would happen if she did that, but she also felt as if simply lying there wasn't the right thing to do either. Eventually, she decided to let him know she was there by gently tapping his thigh with her nose, scooting back almost instantly and ready to dart away should his reaction be anything other than calm.

Griffin had to remind himself to relax and respond gently and calmly. "I guess you like my singing," he finally said with a soft smile as he watched the mother of his eggs. "Do you want me to sing another song?" he offered. Songs might be the way to get her out of her shell, and getting her out of her shell would be the best thing for their children. He didn't want them growing up without a proper mother.

Once again, she flinched, knowing his words were directed straight at her this time rather than to the air. Or had he been speaking to the objects he was now wrapped around before? No, that didn't make sense, why would he talk to rocks? But then again, why would he talk to the air? She gave a low growl to herself, trying to dismiss the confusion of her own thougths, and moved around in front of him. Quietly, she laid down, not at all looking relaxed or comfortable but at least somewhat trusting, and watched him expectantly as if waiting for a new song.

Griffin nodded to her expression as much as he dared and selected an old ballad his mother had supposedly been wooed by. He wasn't entirely sure why it had succeeded, but it felt like the right song for right now.

Far away from the worn path of reason,
Further away from the sane,
He battles his shadows and demons,
Fighting to light the way.

And the dust and the dirt cloud his vision,
Onward he rides, unafraid,
He fights the good fight for good reason,
A star that refuses to fade.

Still, he braves his path, while windmills only laugh.

She was wounded and wild when he found her.
He saw her through child's eyes.
She fell for the spell he was under,
Each day a brand-new surprise.

And she watches with strange curiosity:
She wants so much to believe,
Trying to break the chains of reality,
Dying to set herself free.

Still, he braves his path, while windmills only laugh.

Though he may appear tattered and broken:
His clothes are shabby and bare;
Still, he glows like the light from a candle,
The passion of one who still cares.

There was always a rhyme to the reason,
Peering out from tired eyes,
The truth finally came in treason,
So wrong, but so justified,
So wrong, but so justified--
Windmills close their eyes....

Toamna's eyes and ears stayed locked onto Griffin, which was a rare thing since she was usually far too flighty a cautious to let her senses focus on one subject and run the rick of missing a much more dangerous one lurking somewhere else. But she was practically mesmerized by Griffin and his music. She couldn't quite get her mind around how something so strange and new could be so soothing. Usually anything she was unfamiliar with was something to be considered with great caution, but this gave her no fear at all and perhaps that was because it wasn't completely new. She was beginning to realize it was not much different from the way the birds talked and wondered if maybe he was simply trying to tell her something.

Once again, she slowly started to creep towards him, believing that if she got closer she would better understand his words and figure out what he was trying to tell her. Bit by bit her caution of him was wearing away and being replaced by curiosity. After all, if she had managed to spend that one night with him without being harmed there was reason to believe she would be perfectly fine yet again.

Griffin searched his mind for another song. Anything. Preferably something that was affectionate. OK...so the song he picked had been his mother's song in response, but it fit, anyway. She'd sung it once she'd fallen head over paws for his father, supposedly, and thought he'd never notice her, when he already deeply loved her.

The valley green was so serene,
In the middle ran a stream so blue.
A maiden fair in despair
Once had met her true love there,
And she told him;
She would say:

Promise me, when you sing,
Oh, white rose, you'll think of me.
All of your soul, never let go:
I will be your ghost of a rose.

Her eyes believed in mysteries,
She would lay among the leaves of amber.
A spirit wild, heart of a child,
Yet gentle, still, and quiet and mild,
And he loved her,
When she'd say:

Promise me, when you sing,
Oh, white rose, you'll think of me.
All of your soul, never let go:
I will be your ghost of a rose.
Ghost of a rose....

When all was done, she turned to run,
Dancing to the setting sun as he watched her.
And evermore, he thought he saw,
A glimpse of her, a power on the walls forever.
He'd hear her say:

Promise me, when you sing,
Oh, white rose, you'll think of me.
All of your soul, never let go:
I will be your ghost of a rose.

Promise me, when you sing,
Oh, white rose, you'll think of me.
All of your soul, never let go:
I will be your ghost of a rose.
Ghost of a rose...
Ghost of a rose...
Ghost of a rose...
Ghost of a rose...
Ghost of a rose...
Ghost of a rose...
Ghost of a rose....

Still she couldn't understand his words, though she was but inches away from him now, but it turned out that she didn't really care. Just from the tone of his voice she could tell that whatever he was saying was something tender and soft and not to be threatened by at all. Toamna found herself with a similar feeling to the one she had when they were first together; a desire to be close to him, even closer than she was now and if only for but a fleeting second in time.

And so, with her fears nothing but a whisper in the back of her mind now, she closed the small distance between them and gently laid her head on one of his paws as he neared the end of his song. Though it couldn't be heard unless all noise in the forest ceased, the vibration of a soft, low purr could be felt rumbling in her throat. The feral dragon had made contact with another for was what probably only the second time since her mother had abandoned after she had reached maturity. It wasn't contact in the form of violence either, as she had always imagined any physical interaction with another dragon to be, it was in a display of affection. She was quite happy to be near Griffin and his strange bird songs.

Griffin couldn't really hide his awareness of his feral lady anymore. As she purred while resting a head on his paws, he arched his head and neck over to rest delicately over her, gently and protectively. He seemed to have succeeded in the first major step toward taming the mother of his three eggs.

Toamna didn't flinch or even tense at Griffin's head and neck coming to rest over her. She felt safe like this, as if this male dragon would fend off anything that may try to harm her and she was quickly realizing that she wanted to continue to feel this way. This meant that she would have to stay with him and while she was content to be with him now, she wasn't quite sure she would feel the same later. She had become so used to being constantly alone and fleeing whenever other dragons appeared. Would she be able to remain like this or would her fear kick in again and cause her to flee? Well, regardless of what would happen later, she was happy now and that was all she would think of for the time being. Carefully she scooted closer to him, pushing her body against his, and continued to purr though his singing had stopped.
