Honestly, I'm one who has some but a rather limited base of knowledge of politics all together, I'm going to put that out first before we continue. But I'm curious about this new bill on healthcare and such and why it's so debated. And all together my questions are:

Why are the right wing advocates so against it and the left wing advocated fighting so hard for it?
What are it's contents?
Why is the fighting so heated when this matter is of hardly any concern or even mention in other countries?

I wanna hear the points of view from both sides of this and from you guys. But my question to you, my fellow guild member's, are as follows:

What side are you (republican, democrate, etc.)?
Why do you want or not want this bill to pass?
What do you think of the media coverage on this?
What can you say to dissuade those who are opposite of your view?

Let the debate BEGIN!!

1. I still barely know the difference between the two parties, but the president I agree with more is always in the democrat side.
I am not hardcore for either.

2. Well, passing something is better than sitting around and doing nothing.
It would be nice if it passed, but I think they could have done much better things with it.
You know what kind of healthcare bill I want to see?
I want to see one that provides healthcare to those who are in poverty.
Not just poor, but REALLY poor.
I'm talking about the families who survive on 16k a year.
As far as healthcare goes, if you're poor, you're SOL.
That's not how America was founded, and I think it needs to be fixed.

3. I don't watch the media, so uhhh . . . peanut butter.

4. To anyone who has an opposing view: As long as it is what you believe, you have reasons to believe it, and they are your beliefs because of you and not your parents, then you're just fine; go ahead and believe that all you want until you find something better to believe in. That's how it goes, no? =D
I don't like it when people try to persuade.
You can say this and this, but don't say it against that.
It's rude, dude. =o

Let me just start by saying I am so shocked it passed!
my entire town didn't think it would, so when i found out last night, i nearly fainted @.@

i'm anti-political parties, but i'm very liberal and tend to agree with the democratic party's planks most of the time.
whether i wanted it to or not, it passed. no sense in denying it. im just concerned about the financial issues in the long-run. like, my parents actually sat me down and told me that NYU and RICE are pretty much going to be pipe dreams from now on. and this certainly isnt going to help any. TT^TT
i don't watch Tv, and the papers here have been going on and on about the violence in Mexico, so i can't really say anything about the media coverage because i haven't really seen much of it. >.>;;
To each his own. at this point we'll have to wait and see. what if this actually works? what if it epicly fails? if you don't agree with me, i advise you to hold your tongue until we see change. or regression.

i mean, i largely don't mind it, but there are parts of it that make me want to scream. even though i know it's pointless.

left-wingers are largely about cilvil rights, democracy, and lifting up the lower classes. that's why they (we?) want(ed) this so badly. its intention is to help people with modest incomes out with their medical bills.
Ex. single mom who cant afford to pay for the medical expenses her child with type I diabetes needs.

this, i think, (look, Boo! i did it! ;DD) is a noble intention, especially since doctors charge up the a** for simple check ups! D:<
what sucks is that I KNOW sponges and freeloaders are gonna find a way to screw the system.

right-wings, or conservatives, are just that. they want to CONSERVE the old ways. i find this to be dangerous, since being stagnant gets NOTHING done. it makes no sense to just stay put when the world is falling apart around you, n'est-ce pas?? they don't want this health care reform because it would mean the thing they dread most --change. Hmmm. whose mantra was that...? they also largely tend to promote the interests of big business.

The rest of the world doesn't care because most european countries already have universal healthcare, and [i think] it works for them.

1. I have this weird mix of conservative and liberal ideas and ideals. Like, I am all for gay rights and civil rights in general, but I also have morals and I would want to conserve the longer skirt lengths and polite society that seems to dissipate with each new generation. But I tend to agree mostly with progressive ideology. (if you don't know what that is, study american history in the early 1900s.)

2. I didn't necessarily want the bill to pass because it mandated insurance for everyone, even those who could not afford it. Like mandated car insurance is okay because not everyone has a car and therefor not everyone needs it. but everyone has a body and will therefore have to buy it. Also, there's no public option AND it doesn't open state borders to where one could buy cheaper insurance across state lines which would limit inflation and bring down prices through competition. I think in a way it's good that it passed b/c we do need some type of reform.

3. I don't watch the news much so I wouldn't know.

4. Um....I'm not a good debater, so I'm not sure what I can say. I guess try and think how you would feel if you had no money and yet had to buy something totally out of your means.

p.s. 16k is a LOT of money, at least for us it is. razz

I was talking about large families with one income of 16k a year.
Because there are a lot of those.

okay, granted. it's only my mom and dad and me and we don't need that much so yeah. but honestly, it still is enough to live on IF housing is taken out of the picture, as in, if a house has already been bought and paid off or an apartment's rent includes gas and utilities, that sort of thing. One does not need any of this stupid technology (no cell phones, no computers, no tvs, no ipods, etc.; they're just not essential to life).

Agreed, and they live without it. (I find it funny that I don't typically use any of those on a daily basis XDD!)
The point is that not hourse nor car nor gas nor anything is paid off.
The gov does not give then any extra money because they make just above the fine line between what the government defines as poverty.
So a family living off of half as much could live far better than a family making 16k simply because the governemt pays them and pays them and pays them.
When they get tired of that, they pay them some more XDD!

I don't like government hand outs just as much as I don't like affirmative action. Giving money to the poor perpetuates the poorness and creates a welfare dependent class of citizens at the lowest level of society. many of these people DO have cable (I volunteer at one these government handout sites and i overhear a lot of things)at the least and many probably have cell phones (as in there's a sign saying no cell phone use in the building, from which i can infer that there are enough people coming in with cell phones to necessitate such a warning).

1. I am leaning towards right-winged.
2. I do not want this bill to pass, but it will anyways. First off, I am not insinuating anything, but I do not want it to pass because the first step in Communism is to take over the public's health access and systems. I'm not saying Obama is a Communist, but I come from a family that has already fled one country because of Communism, and they are really freaked because they do not want to go through it again. Health care should be offered, not mandatory.

Another reason why I am against the Health Care Bill is because I would actually have to pay for my health care. This is unfair to me because I am a member of the Coast Guard. What does this mean? It means that if I get injured on my boat, which is where injuries usually happen, I would have to pay for it. Which would suck, because it was while I am working. Military personnel would have to pay for their health care, meaning we would get less benefits and a lower paycheck, dissuading people from joining the military in the future.

A third reason as to why I am against the Health Care Bill is that in the end, it just doesn't work out. My dad is a financial adviser, and he explained to me that ten years of taxes would pay for four years of the health care bill. There is just no way that our country could financially sustain the bill, and we will see that in a few years.

A fourth reason is because I have read Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, and it was depressing enough in that to see it happen.

3.I think all of the media coverage on this (except for FOX news), is extremely left-winged, because all of the stuff they have covered on it has been pro. I believe that the media has not been doing the proper job over the years, and have started to get politically influenced in it's coverage, for the left-wing's benefits.

4. Read #2.

I really have no clue. I mean, I have tried reading it, but its a couple thousand pages. Do you really think the people passing the bill have read it? No, they get a skewed summary of it. I don't think anyone knows exactly what this bill involves fully, but I think Congress are just trying to make themselves look good (like in Atlas), by passing a law they don't understand without really thinking of the consequences of it. Doctors and nurses are going to be pissed because they are not going to be paid as well, which will decrease the amount of people going in for the job. This is an extra bad time, because all of the baby boomers are starting to get to the stage of death, which is America's biggest generation. Our health care system is going to be severely crippled due to the fact that no one wants to be a doctor, the need for doctors is going to sky rocket, and the bill cannot pay for itself.

User Image I don't know what to say.
I hope to God that our goverment knows what it has gotten itself into with this.
and I hope that they are not deliberately trying to do harm.

as naive and childish as that sounds >.>;;

I cannot say for certain how I feel about this new bill.
We just need to wait and see how everything turns out.
A national healthcare system seems to work for the european countries in which it has been implemented.

But I see what you're saying. As if the demand for doctors and nurses wasn't high enough already-!

I dunno, the main thing of it is though is that it can't pay for itself. We are already in the hole pretty deep, and when this bill puts us further in, they will implement new taxes which will give us a heavier load to bear. That's another thing I have about this bill. They say it will help the economy. When you do the math, however, it just doesn't add up.
