It was early morning, the dawn sun had yet to grace the world with it's glory and Cocidius climbed the forests gradient as it rose behind where the waterfall started. He had spend the last few days stalking the forest on the opposite side of the river and also the grasslands, it was coming up to spring and soon the bison would be giving birth, as would the deer and elk. The coming spring meant new life and plentiful food for the pack, what with their own growth, his own litter and also Triton and Bryna's there were plenty of mouths to feed. The problem was it had been a harsh winter and while prey was scarce and the pack had to resort often to things such as smaller game it had meant the larger animals were at least spared a little time from being preyed upon and simply focused with getting themselves through the winter.

Cocidius was now left with perhaps a smaller number of large prey than he would hope for, the winter had taken it's toll on the game but he could deny the pack no more the promise of hunting larger game, he'd simply have to choose the target well. He knew the animals that roamed the packs lands well enough now to be able to choose a female that was perhaps a little weaker and therefore give birth to less hardy offspring. First however he would have to see which wolves turned up for the hunt, knowing the pack was mainly female dominant he'd perhaps suggest taking down an elk, but he'd wait and see, a bison cow could be plausible if Triton, Haku and HanGeng all turned up but he'd have to see.

He paused in his climb and looked up at the morning sky, the sun had risen and he quicken his pace wanting to be able to get to the stone circle in time to meet Haku before he called the pack to hunt.

Through the thick brush came a large black and orange wolf. There was a bright grin on his lips and a bit of a spring in his step. Despite the conflict of heart he had been dealing with recently, he was happy. Besides, that needed to be pushed to the back of his mind as they started this very important task.

The hunt, the very thing that would bring their pack together in ways that had never been done before. As his eyes came upon the large green wolf that he trusted with their prey, he gave a knowing nod and slowed his steps so that he could speak to them.

"A gorgeous day," Came Haku's proud voice, his eyes practically glowing with how excited he was. "A perfect day to build pack morale and have the perfect hunt." Sure.. it probably wouldn't be amazing the first time, but he had faith that with a bit of practice they would become something grand.

"Have you decided on what sort of prey you want our pack to take down today?"

Triton found himself in a strange mental place as he made his way to the hunting grounds - on one hand the first hunt of the season was an exciting prospect, he had great hopes for the performance of the pack...but on the other this would be the first time he'd spent a considerable amount of time away from the pups since their birth.

Sure he trusted Reaction to look after them well enough but as a first time father he still found leaving them for lengthy periods a tad but unsettling. This however was not a distraction he could afford during the hunt and so he did his best to shake it off and shape up. how would it look to the rest if he faltered during the hunt because his overactive imagination thought it head a pup crying? Not well.

Snorting slightly at himself he picked up the pace and found himself quickly at the meeting place. Haku and Cocidius were already there and he gave Haku a respectful nod of the head before greeting them. "A good day for a hunt yes?"

Cocidius came to the top of the rise where the river then climbed up behind the mountains which ran along this side of the territory like a wall, but turning to look down to where the river flowed, and the main part of the territory one could see for miles. Cocidius had come to like this spot, the water rushed and crashed about the smaller parts of it's course here, before splashing down the waterfall to the pool below before making a more sedate course down and out of the packs territory. The sun was rising now and he could spend a happy few hours simply watching the spectacle but he did not have those hours spare today. He choose a crossing across the river, where it was a little shallower and the current not so rapid and upon reaching the other side he took one quick look at the view over the land which he had a growing love of and being able to satisfy a little of his hunger to simply watch the day roll by he headed down the step climb the other side.

Not and ideal way to come to the stone circle but one he enjoyed for the views it provided, he'd not recommend Haku to lead the hunt this way, instead if they were to go to the grasslands to hunt he'd advise taking the pack across the more accessible crossings further down the river. Paw over paw he came to the stone cirlce just late of Haku as he spotted the male close to one of the largest stones in the circle, his own. He nodded rather curtly to the alpa male and walked up to him, 'That it is.' he replied simply. As for raising pack morale, perhaps, that would depend on the hunts outcome he would wager and as for the perfect hunt, the same applied to that too.

He cast his eyes about, there was no other wolves here yet and he simply informed his alpha, 'That all depends on who turns up.' he stated simply and then looked Haku in the eye before allowing a little understanding to pass between them before looking away again as another approached. He let the beginnings of a smile tug at his maw as his eyes lay rest upon Triton, 'As good as any I suppose.'

Bryna had taken longer than Triton to arrive as she lingered at Madhuri's cave, making sure her pups understood she and their father would be returning and that they would behave as best as they could while their parents were away. She didn't take too long to catch up, and ghosted into the back of the small group, nudging Triton's side briefly with her nose to let him know she had arrived. None of the gammas had arrived yet, but it was better for the leaders to be present first anyway.

"Haku, Cocidius," she greeted before turning her eyes briefly to the clear sky, seeing the hints of day barely gracing the horizon. They had hours before the sun would come up, but it was a good time to startle sleeping prey, and if it were closer to dawn they might be able to find some awake, foraging for their own food. It would be her first pack hunt in some time, but Bryna wasn't particularly concerned; she would do well with packmates backing her up. Hopefully she hadn't forgotten the mechanics of hunting in a large group.

"I hope everyone remembers to come. I would hate to have to run back to stir up the dens," Bryna commented, fully intending to do so if she had to and Haku wanted it. She smiled slightly at Haku, gauging his mood. Pleasant. It would be a good hunt if the turn-out was right. Haku had good reason to be pleased, and his attitude coupled with Cocidius's lead would certainly inspire aptitude in the rest of the pack. Bryna was pleased now as well.

Haku's lips curled into a smile at Bryna's words. She was perfect for her position, and he loved how she acted. "You may just have to do that," He grinned over to her, before turning to Cocidius and Triton. He did hope they would make a good team, he was trusting in them to do their jobs.

Though it was strange to have an alpha so happy, Haku could simply not help himself. He had high hopes for what would happen, and he could only hope that everyone shared in the contentment and excitement that this hunt would bring.

Through the brush came the other silver wolf, this one with black markings along his form. He grinned a little over to the Beta Female, bowing his head to her. Then he turned to bow his head to both the Hunting Trainer, and the Hunting Captian.

"My apologies for being a bit late," He stated with his head tilted. He wouldn't explain why, though, unless he was told he needed to do so. It didn't take long to catch the mood of the group, Haku was pleased and therefore it was much easier for everyone else to feel the very same way.

He was pleased that all of them had shown up, a strong group of the leaders of their pack. "I checked on the pups with Madhuri. She seems to be doing quite well in her new position."

Triton felt an amused look twitch his lips as Bryna arrived and mentioned stirring up the dens - personally he himself would find that vastly entertaining. He did so adore watching Bryna at work. Clearing his throat slightly as he realized his thoughts were straying he merely gave her a warm look before turning back to the others.

To be honest he had expected a bit more of a turn out for this hunt, it was after all the first of the season, but such was the way it went sometimes and he was slightly mollified by HenGeng's arrival, not the least because he bore news of the pups. "Good to know" He told the silver male "But I didn't doubt she would do a fine job, they will probably run her ragged by the end" He aid with a slight laugh - there were quite a few pups in the pack at the moment, his own four kept him hopping - he couldn't imagine adding an entire second litter to watch over.

Macha had spent the last two days on her own, of a sorts. Cocidius had told her the first hunt of the spring was planned and more importantly the first large pack hunt since Triton and himself had been appointed their rolls within the pack. Macha had been out with Cocidius and once she had hunted a deer with him, it had been unsuccessful the first time, Macha hadn't realised how nervous the creature could be after all Aisling seemed to be rather content with her company after their first meeting. Though with a little patience and practice she and Cocidius had brought down a small doe and while Macha had her fill Cocidius had gone off to fetch his family so they may feed also. But Macha, now only as a young adult still had a lot to learn. She promised herself she'd make more of an effort to search for Triton and train more with him.

Hunting aside though Macha still hadn't discovered what her heart wanted in life and after hours of pondering yesterday she only made herself dizzy and so to distract herself she had decided to pay a visit to the two legger camp that Madhuri had taken her to as a pup. The two leggers seemed to recognise her from before and soon she was greeted by petting hands and two smaller two leggers ran off racing each other returning with large black feathers which with the guidance and control of a larger two legger they attached to her growing collection on her shoulder and soon grew to rest upon her head. They stood back from her admiring their handy work and as the light grew dim and the two leggers became interested in other things Macha turned and headed to her den.

With the morning sun bridging the horizon and sending shards of light in through the entrance of her den Macha squinted away from the light and then sudden realisation dawned, she was late. With a sudden gusto Macha leapt from where she had been sleeping and without a backwards glance she ran down the steep incline from her den towards the main denning area. Quick paws got her out of one or two possible slips while the morning dew and damp still clung to the ground. As she approached the main denning area and carried on towards the stone circle the incline became less steep and she was able to pick up her pace.

Soon the scent of multiple wolves filled her nostrils and she slowed to a slow trot and then eased to a brisk walk as she broke the tree line and entered the stone circle. She cast her eyes about noting who was present. She nodded curtly to Cocidius knowing the hunting captain required nothing more as a welcome, she smiled warmly at Triton and dipped her nose to Bryna and then winked quickly at HanGeng not controlling her maw as she beamed at him. To Haku she lowered her eyes and dipped her nose and formally apologised, 'I am sorry I am late.' She rose her head and looked at him in the eye briefly, she had not seen the alpha male since their heated argument and her opinions on him still hadn't changed and that was, she didn't know him at all. Breaking the contact she chose to walk over to her old friend and came to stand next to him, 'I've missed you.' she spoke in tones only HanGeng could hear.

Cocidius watched the interactions between Bryna and Triton and wondered whether if that was how a mated pair was meant to interact. The bond between him and Kalina was still strange to him and though he had a great deal of affection for the female he still could not quell old beliefs and old habits and he still took greater pleasure in casting his eyes over the male form than the females. But his thoughts were drifting and he berated himself focusing back on the hunt. So far there were 6 of them, 2 females and 4 males, plenty to take down a bison. But this was the first time they had hunted in such a large group and though he had now formed a friendship with Triton, the hunting trainer, he wondered if targetting the largest mammal which roamed the pack lands was the best idea.

Weighing it up he knew that he could find a suitable target, the cows were birthing right about now, plenty of vulnerable calf's and young first time mothers. And if the hunt was successful Haku was right, it'd draw the pack closer to one another bonding through the event and strengthening the family unit. This was not his decision though, ultimately Triton would have to let him know that he was confident that the pack was ready to hunt such large game. If not Cocidius would suggest a elk or moose. He looked at Triton directly and asked directly, 'Are you confident enough that the pack is ready to tackle a bison or while we're still fresh to the concept as working as a team would something else be suitable?'

Macha's arrival did not go unnoticed by Triton - the wolf while still young had grown much during his time within the pack and having been the first other then Haku he'd had contact with Triton was rather fond of her, counting the wolfess as a friend and was pleased to see her grown into such a fine strong wolf.

His thoughts however were interrupted as Cocidius spoke and Triton's mind turned towards the hunt once more. mulling over his answer he eyed those who had shown up thoughtfully - Bryna he had no worries over they had hunted together often enough that he knew her capabilities inside and out. the others perhaps less so but he had been watching, observing...and it was clear that the best of the pack if not all of the pack had shown themselves. Macha was the least experienced but having hunted with her before Triton was confident she would listen to instruction.

"Providing you can find a suitable animal within the herds then I think we can manage one" Triton replied with a slight nod. "Those who have appeared are the most experienced of the pack - with perhaps the exception of Macha whom has already proven her ability to listen. this group if any should be capable of a Bison"

There was no way for Haku to miss Macha's entrance. His dark eyes flickered along her form, taking in a sight that he had not noticed in quite some time. His head merely nodded once in response to her words, doing what he could to seem uninterested in the female. It had been quite a process to deny any affections towards the dark female, but as his emotions were unwelcomed, he would not hold onto it.

"Is this all?" He asked gruffly, his eyes turning to Triton before he glanced to Cocidius once more. His deaf ear twitched atop his head as it always did, adjusting to try to pick up sound despite the fact that it would never again be able to do such. "A bison.. sounds perfect." His maw tugged up into a content grin at the thought of the fresh meat.

His head turned, refusing to glance over towards HanGeng and Macha as he saw the slight bit of affection between the two.

HanGeng was pleased to see Macha looking so well, he nodded his head a few times and nuzzled at her neck just a little. "I've missed you as well," He murmured softly, keeping his own words soft as not to upset the Alpha. It was a dangerous matter of the heart, though he did not have similar feelings for Macha, he was still close to the female and could be considered a threat.

"A bison?" He looked up and glanced over to Cocidius with his eyes practically glowing. "I would rather like that, myself. One of my favorites."
PostPosted: Thu May 27, 2010 3:42 pm

Macha twisted her head slightly, still having to look up at HanGeng, she smiled at his welcome but it soon faded as she turned to look back into the circle of wolves, Haku hadn't even seemed to acknowledge her, even when she had apologised for being late, which with the words HanGeng left her with last time now made her even more confused, time alone certainly had sorted that issue, even if she had matured. She caught the tale end of what Cocidius had said, so they would be after a bison? She turned to Triton who confirmed the fact and with his last words she nodded and acknowledged, 'I thought I did well catching that goose out of the air, but yes, I'll listen and obey.' she dropped her voice down in volume and whispered over her shoulder at HanGeng, 'Only if it sounds right, I'm not obeying a fool.'

Following her own comment Haku spoke, his voice gruff though it softened and then a touch of excitement seemed to enter it at the mention of the mammal they were to hunt. HanGeng next to her piped up next declaring his desire for bison meat, the excitement was growing, not yet tangible but infectious none the less. It reminded her of her first conversation with Triton with how it was hard for wolves to hunt as a solid unit, their blood thirst and excitement of the chase often leading them into a frenzy subsequently simply working as a lone wolf during at hunt than working with each other effectively. She remained quite for now, awaiting instruction, she turned to Cocidius whom she wagered would finally lay to the rest the subject of the target prey.

"I've never hunted bison," Bryna commented, glancing to HanGeng. She had seen some of the great beasts when she was doing some small hunting of her own in days past, but they had never done a large hunt before. "We didn't have any near my old pack, but from its size I'm assuming it's difficult prey, even for a group."

She didn't notice anything specifically unusual going on in the group-- not that she should have, since she wasn't privvy to the personal concerns of the Alpha and the young female-- but she caught that Haku seemed... unsettled. No, not unsettled exactly. She would have outright asked him what was on his mind, but she knew better than to do so in front of the rest of the pack. Not only would she not get an answer, but it might distract the others from the upcoming hunt. Or worse, distract her.

For the moment then, she shrugged it off. If it was a concern, it would appear later and she could address it then. She was direct with her thoughts and words, not foolish.

"It should be an interesting hunt," she conceded, smiling slightly at her fellow Beta and then Macha.

All eyes were on him it would seem, Cocidius looked at the alpha male and nodded slowly before scanning around the group, the numbers were right and Triton seemed happy with the prospect and ultimately that was his decision made, now all Cocidius had to do was point out the target prey animal. He focused on Triton and exchanged a look with the male which read 'this is it then' and he smiled slowly before turning back to Haku, 'Bison it is then.' he let the idea sink in with the others in the hunting party, letting the excitement sink in before they would have to focus on the task at hand. The moment passed and he continued addressing Haku, 'The Bison are birthing this time of year, they have moved down onto the grasslands, we need to make our way there first.'

As much as Cocidius had control over the target and Triton oversaw the packs actions during the hunt it was Haku who would lead them in a formal sense and Cocidius awaited the males prompt, either he would lead the way or he'd invite Cocidius or Triton to lead, but this being the first hunt he did not doubt the alpha male would pass the opportunity up to head the party.

However in this moment Cocidius cast his eyes out over the heads of those that were gathered and wondered what was keeping Kalina, she had known the hunt was taking place today, he wanted to share this moment with her, since their first meeting when she had chased down Aisling they had not really bonded, Cocidius was still apprehensive about would could come out of befriended the female, fearing the worse. He had been hoping she'd of come today, if they could of found some sort of respect for each other, she seeing him in 'action' so to speak, respected by the others within the pack and for him to see that perhaps she wasn't like the females in the tales he'd grown up being told, that they could work well with others and didn't all have their own agendas at heart.

Carpet was new to the pack, and latest to the pack hunt it had taken him a little while to figure things out. It was much harder being unable to verbally express himself and ask questions. Still he had come to enjoy the sensation of being around other wolves. He liked walking along the packs territory in defense of a place he now thought of as his home. He had observed the others trying to figure out each position within the pack and decide where he was best suited to. He came upon the other wolves in time to catch Cocidius' words and licked his chops at the idea of Bison. The animals were large, too large to hunt alone, he was excited to have a chance to finally work with a pack...his pack. He had to remind himself over and over that he was no longer alone.

Unable to greet anyone he instead flicked his eyes trying to catch the gaze of each wolf before refocusing. They were moving then, down into the more open grasslands. He didn't much like being in the open his vivid colors were often troublesome there. Still he would follow and act where he was directed, especially since he knew how sweet the reward for cooperation would be.
