((Okay so pretty much this is the story line for this comic I'm making. I just hope it turns out well.)) ----------------------------------------------------
It has been said that a group of exorcists protect our world from demons of the afterlife, reapers of the departed, shinigamis. However as time went, the shinigamis grow stronger, so much that it was beginning to be difficult to eliminate them. That is when the gatekeepers were established.
The gatekeepers are a small section of the exorcists that can open gates to Heaven or Hell. The shinigami feared the power of these gatekeepers and soon started to kill them off. Many people saw these gatekeepers as holy beings. But a few feared the terrifying power these special exorcists held, causing them to avoid them, and even at times, attack them. Around four years ago, a great catastrophe occurred for the gatekeepers of Heaven and Hell. The gatekeeper of heaven suddenly disappeared during a mission, and the gatekeeper of Hell was almost killed. The Elders of the exorcist organization soon started to worry about their remaining gatekeepers, and started to cut them off from the outside world, only allowing them to leave at the aid of another exorcist.
All was silent in the headquarters of the exorcists as exorcist Rone was carried in covered in blood and wounds. His partner, Ira, followed close behind. The two had just returned from a gruesome mission of eliminating yet another shinigami. However, this task should have been easy for the two exorcists, only returning with some minor wounds; sadly, that was not the case on this mission. The shinigami’s accomplice ambushed the two, and Ira, over confident of the situation, charged in ahead. Rone, the more alert of the pair, immediately intercepted the trap meant for his partner to jump into, causing him to be heavily wounded. Luckily the wounds were not fatal, but still quite sever if not treated immediately. Ira waited outside the infirmary as guilt of his actions filled him.
About a week later, exorcist Ira is equipped with is pistol and knives as he returns to headquarters to meet with Rone’s temporary replacement. He brushed a lock of his dark hair from his eyes as he checked the pistol hidden under his dark brown trench coat. The young man felt that this quick decision was not necessary, but sighed in defeat as he went ahead through the long halls to the Chamber of Elders where the organization’s leaders were. On the other side of the large building, a teenaged boy is lead to the Chamber of Elders by a group of priests. The cross earrings he wears symbolize that he is a gatekeeper. The boy is about to meet his new guardian, an exorcist. He was told that they were the strongest of human in this world, but he doubted it. Once they were inside the chamber, the priest instructed him to take his place next to the head of the Elders. Scowling, the boy nodded as he was handed his weapon, a scythe and went to the elderly man’s side. He looked around the table at the other elders, whom each represented a major party within the organization. The boy’s eyes finally fell upon a young girl who sat adjacent to him next to an elderly lady. She was Kaida, the next leader of her party, and soon will take her grandmother’s place at the table. She waved at him with a smile, and he just nodded in reply as the doors open, revealing a tall young man wearing a trench coat. Ira stepped into the dark room until he was in the center. He looked around and immediately noticed the young lad next to the head. “You summoned me?” he asked as he knelt down, looking up at the group. “Ira, from this day on you shall be caring for this young gatekeeper,” the eldest spoke in his gruff deep voice, “I am well aware that you object this sudden switch of partners, but I can not allow anymore time to be delayed. The shinigami are growing in power as we speak and cannot just sit here and twiddle our thumbs. Nero here needs training of what happens out in the field, and what better way to do that then set him out. His protection is your responsibility, do not fail us.” Nero looked down at the man who would be protecting him for now, examining him. “Is this man really an exorcist,” he asked, not at all impressed with what he saw before him. Ira’s eyebrow twitched at what the boy said, but knew to keep his composure before the elders and ignored him. “Understood,” Ira stated as he stood and started for the door. Nero gave out a big sigh as he followed after Ira though the large iron doors. Once the two were clear of the chamber, Ira took another look at the boy beside him. He’s still only a kid he thought as he hit the boy on the backside of the head, An insulting kid… Nero glared back at the older then whacked him with the pole portion of his weapon. “What do was that for you sorry excuse for an exorcist?!,” he growled. Ira scowled back at the boy. “What was that you little brat?!” Ira argued back as he grabbed the younger by the hair, “This is why I hate working with gate keepers. They think they’re all that when they aren’t.” Without a second’s notice, the boy raised his scythe, and slammed the older in the stomach forcing him to release him. “And don’t mess with us gatekeepers either, “ Nero scoffed, “If it weren’t for the old man’s orders, I’d have ditched you the moment I got the chance to.” With that said, the boy left the man in his pain as he continued down the hall. Ira buckled over at the initial pain, but soon regained his footing and growled at the younger only to sigh in defeat. The kid can fight he noted to himself as he hurried to catch up with Nero. “Hey kid, listen I-,” he started to say until the boy’s blade was stuck in his face. “Don’t call me kid,” Nero growled, raising his blade up at the older, “I’m already 14, not some baby in the play yard anymore, got that?” “Sorry, sorry,” Ira replied as he took a few steps away from Nero, “Didn’t mean to offend you, just trying to say…well… maybe we just got off to a bad start… so.. . wanna start over? Let me tell you that you’re not as annoying as my usual partner, so I guess I can put up with you for the time being.” “Oh, thanks for your acceptance,” Nero sarcastically grumbled, although he felt the same way. Ira smiled at the other’s response. In a way, the younger reminded Ira of Rone, although the two were complete opposites. Once the two were walking side by side, Ira figured he might as well break the silence. “So… What is it you like to do?” he asked. Nero stopped at this unusual question out of the blue, but shrugged it off. “ I don’t know, “ he replied as he balanced his scythe over his shoulders, “I guess I liked sneaking out of the Priest Quarters. That’s where they kept me since I came here… but I never was able to get out of HQ. I always got caught before I was able to even reach the gate.” Ira chuckled at the other’s response and nodded, “That sounds like a fun hobby. But I can understand how hard it is to get out of this place. The elders don’t like it when they can’t control everything around themselves.” Nero nodded in agreement, “Yeah, but that will change when Kaida-san is at the table. She’ll give us gatekeepers more freedom.” “Kaida, huh?” Ira sighed as he scratched the back of his head, “Yeah, she’s on her way to rise in power, but who knows how much influence she will have… but she does seem like the type of person that will do that.” “Yeah…” Nero replied as the gates to the outer city came into view, “Come on, we’re almost out of this place.”

The two walked through the city in silence as they commenced their first mission together, clearing out a local cemetery of all ghosts and spirits. It would be Nero’s job to give passage to the lost souls on the grounds to their proper place by opening the gates, and Ira’s to eliminate any reapers or evil spirits. Once at the entrance, they decided to split up to cover more area and finish the job quicker. Ira did not object to the idea for separating since he knew the boy could take care of himself, and it was Nero’s first time outside of HQ in years. Might as well let the kid enjoy his freedom. Deep within the cemetery, a shady figure sat upon a tomb, his eyes closed as the wind picked up around him. He opened his eyes and stared into the full moon above as he felt the presences of two exorcists entering his domain. Another chance to feed, he thought as an evil smile formed over his face. To his luck, the two separated, and one was headed in his direction. He jumped off tomb he perched on and landed effortlessly on the ground below. “Spirits who signed their souls to me, do as I command,” he chanted as the poor soul of a woman was released from his body. The woman had the unfortunate fate of being this mysterious being’s last meal, and now was his slave for eternity. “Go” he commanded as he watched her wobble off meet with this intruder. Nero continued through the graveyard in search for lost souls when he caught a glimpse of a soul wondering through the graves and tombs. “Wait!” he called out to it as he dashed off to catch up with it. The soul turned out to be that of a poor woman in tears. With a kind smile, the boy went to her side, “Are you alright miss?” The woman looked up to the boy as she wept and fell to her knees in despair. “I-I…I died today… but there was still so much I wanted to do!” she started off, between sobs, “I w-was never able to complete my life dreams!” “I can help you fulfill them if would smile for me,” the boy kindly said as he knelt beside the maiden, “Now what is it you need to do in this world?” She glanced at the boy and nodded slowly, smiling slightly. “You would really help me?” she asked, unsure if the other would help her. “I had a lot of things I still wanted to do…B-but, since I died and all, the one thing I regret is not getting married, or at least experiencing it, “ she admitted with a small blush, “I don’t mean to be a burden, but would you pretend to walk me down the aisle at least?” The dark figure watched as the scene unfolded from the shadows. He was pleased with how things were progressing, and urged the spirit on. If things continued as they were, he would soon have that boy’s soul in his grasps. Nero smiled as he stood up. “Of course madam,” he said with a bow, “Shall we then? There’s a church not far from here, but it’s still within the graveyard grounds. I hope that would be acceptable for you.” “Yes, yes,” she replied in excitement. The maiden followed after the young exorcist as he led the way to the chapel. Once they were within the large building, she reached out for the lad’s arm only to be thrown back by some sort of shield around him as she shrieked out it pain. Nero quickly turned to help the maiden when he realized what had happened. “I’m sorry madam,” he said as he removed his cross earrings and laid them on a nearby table, “I forgot about these. They produce a shield so that spirits cannot touch me. I hope you were not to harmed.” The woman shook her head as she was helped up. “It’s alright,” she nervously replied, “I’m just thrilled that my dream is about to come true.” Nero smiled back at the maiden, as he held out his hand to her. “Shall we?” he asked, resting his scythe down beside his crosses, “Not to rush you, but I’m still on the job. I have to help as many spirits as I can.” “Yes, let’s begin,” she nodded. She then began to walk down the aisle with Nero as a joyful smile formed on her face. Moonlight shown thought the stain glass windows all around the room as the two approached the alter. Nero turned to the women to find she was gone. He whirled around to face the entrance of the room to find a dark figure not far behind him, the maiden standing not far from him. “W-What’s going on?” the boy asked as he stepped back towards the alter. Without his crosses and scythe, Nero was powerless and at the mercy of any spirit that approached him. Things were not going well for the young gatekeeper.
