Alone, Amitabha walked. He was still a stranger to these lands. Everything was new and unfamiliar to him. He paused to examine a plant here, a bird there. Such interesting shapes and colors they had. He admired a bright purple bloom that poked out from the forest floor. It had been winter so recently and yet this land was already putting forth fresh flowers.

He couldn't name what had drawn him away from his mate Sopheary that day. He didn't think it was some calling of fate or anything similarly grand. He had felt the need to wander on his own many times before and in most occasions nothing of significance occurred. Still, he didn't know what the day would bring and was curious of what it would.

Misaki had been sunning in the wildflower field for much of the morning. The sun was now high over head and the beams heated her coat too much for her liking.

She had taken to the forest for refuge, and possibly a snack. She knew that a creek ran through the forest not far from where she had been sunning, she decided to head in that direction for a quick drink before heading into the deep forest.

Amitabha's ears pricked up. Was that the sound of running water nearby? He turned his path towards it. He had been walking for some time now and it would be refreshing to take a drink. As he walked, sunlight passed through gaps in the trees above to dance and sparkle off his many golden decorations. His crystalline horn flung small rainbows off it into the ground around him as well.

He walked on until he caught sight of the stream. He came up to its side and lowered his head to drink the cool waters. What a peaceful place. He shut his eyes in appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounded him. Such places were meant to be treasured.

Misaki cut through the forest, the sound of the water become more audible. As she neared the tree line she could see a brightly colored soquili who was taking a drink from the water, the coat....seemed familiar.

She watched for a moment, it was a stallion. She waited for a moment longer then noticed the unique horn that dressed the stallions head. She had only seen such on one other soquili...Her Brother.

She stepped out from the treeline, "Amitabha?" she inquired. It had been many many years since she had seen her brother. "Is that you, Brother?"

Amitabha's ears instantly pricked up and he raised his head faster than his usual slow movements. A rush of jingling from his ornaments accompanied this movement but he didn't even notice. He took in the mare that was standing before him. She was a unicorn, blue like still waters and with the bloom and leaves of the lotus seeming to rise from those waters. His sister.

"Misaki." He said her name with a surprised reverence. "Yes, it is I. It has not been long since I came to these lands." The slightest of smiles pulled upwards at the edges of his mouth. "I did not expect to see you again so swiftly, or even again in this lifetime. Our fate is blessed, is it not?"

"Nor did I!" she quickly moved over to her brother, nuzzling his neck with a smile. "I knew we would not meet again until the next life." she took a few steps back so that she could look over him. He had filled out nicely, he had been just a young adult when she had last seen him. She was proud to see that he still wore the family heirlooms.

"You look well, Brother. What has brought you here?" She inquired, then suddenly remembered that he would be able to see their other sister as well. "Vara isn't far! I found her again some months ago. We have a large family here in these lands!"

"A large family?" Amitabha asked mildly and without surprise. He remembered his sister Avalokiteshvara well and her tendencies had run to maternal instinct even as a filly. She had always cared for those suffering around her. Without even asking he knew that she undoubtedly made an excellent matriarch for her apparently large clan.

He blinked aside that train of thought and replied to his sister's question instead. "As for why I am here, it is a more complicated query. I have come in search of you and our sister though it is true that I did not expect to find you. I come bearing news of the kind that I am certain will not please you."

"Yes, very large. Vara has found her mate and they have produced a proud line. I have three offspring and a mate. And you, Brother? Are you mated?" her head tilted as she inquired. She had always known that her brother would seek out only the best for himself, she had no worries of what choices he made.

She paused, listening to her brother. "Bad news then, What has happened?"

"Talk of my wife can wait for another time," he said quietly and thoughtfully. It would truly take little explanation for his relationship with Sopheary... but he had more pressing matters to discuss. He watched his sister for a moment quietly. He didn't enjoy the thought of the grief that would soon fill her. He had long since soothed such thoughts from his own mind with meditation, but others would not be as adept at that escape.

"Our parents," he started. "They loved you and our sister very much even after you had left for other lands, that I am sure of. However... Misaki, our father and mother are now dead."

Her heart sank, she stood there quiet for a moment. She often thought of her parents and their teachings, she had been blessed beyond measure when it came to her family.

"When, Brother?" her voice low, something inside her stung at not having been there as they had passed. "Surely...surely they passed in peace together?" she hoped that they had at least parted together in death.

"It was perhaps six months ago," replied Amitabha. He remembered coming upon them, as together in death as they had been in life. In it's own way it had been beautiful. He wondered if any soquili other than their family were capable of such a poetic demise.

"It was as if fate had drawn them off together," he said while thinking upon it. "Their lives were too linked for it to be any other way."

Her head lowered just slightly, but a smile crossed her face. "At least they are still at the other's side..." she stopped for a moment in thought. The old couple had always been there for the other, able to finish one another's sentences...always knowing the other's thoughts. Though it was sad news, she was glad that their spirits were still together in the after life.

"Peace be,... We should go tell Vara," she nodded her head and looked over to her brother.

"It will be good to see Avalokiteshvara again," he remarked with distant thoughtfulness. He wasn't in the habit of using nicknames, even for the sometimes exceedingly long names of their family. "And she needs to hear of our parents as well."

He glanced around the area, as if he could locate the direction of their sister with his eyes alone. "Is she far from here? If she is more than a day's travel, I must inform my mate."

"She isn't far at all, just through that path there," she nodded towards the forest. "There is a clearing just through the forest to the North, the whole herd is there."

She smiled as Brother spoke Vara's whole name. It had been a while since anyone had called her such. Here in the Kawaii lands, she had learned that the long names of their family were considered a mouthful.

"Come, Brother, it won't take long..." She took to a steady walk towards the path.

"Thank you, Misaki." Amitabha followed his sister without further comment. The gold that decorated him clinked together as he walked in an almost musical fashion. The weight of his immense golden headdress was heavy on his head but he was used to that by now. He found himself thinking back to the last time he had seen Avalokiteshvara. She had been much younger then. He wondered if she would still have that same light of compassion in her eyes.
