I met a man the other day, some fanatical Christian, who said that single mothers would burn in Hell. WTF? Someone please explain this to me.

I think it's a sex-before-marriage thing. I'm not sure how it all applies to divorced or widowed women.
They say abortionists burn in hell too. So you're literally damned if you do, damned if you don't wink

Sanguina Cruenta I think it's a sex-before-marriage thing. I'm not sure how it all applies to divorced or widowed women. The way he explained it, it was any woman that "dared" to raise a child without the help of a husband was damned. Now, I've heard some pretty ludicrous things in my day, but that just seemed to ludicrous.

Yeah... Fanatics are scary people with twisted logic. They do more harm for the causes that they say they champion, than they do good for them.
Sometimes I wonder if these malicious people just say they are of a certain faith and then act over-zealous to start strife and confusion: A religious version of drama whores.
The guy is ignorant, and obviously has some personal issues.

Women being submissive, not being in the pulpit, etc is another thing I have yet to see any textual backing on. Yes, there are some verses but when you take them in the historical context, then it's no longer applicable to today.

Sometimes you just go 'Eh?' I would question the man and try to figure out why he's afraid of independent women.

Ahhh, born-again zealots. This lot seem to think they have to prove their piousness to everyone by decrying everything that could be even slightly immoral (not saying sex before marriage is, but y'know the whole paternity she-bang from earlier).
I tend to piss this sort of person off by talking about Ba'al, my cats, and how much the pope looks like Emperor Palpatine.
