Ashrialto gave a lazy stretch as he stood from a good roll, shaking from nose to the tip of his leonine tail. Loose strands of grass fell from his night-sky colored coat, a stray leaf or two from the surrounding trees that was once tangled in his mane following the blades of grass back down to the ground.
With a smirk, silver eyes peeked through a black and white mane at the area he'd wandered to just before dawn... A small clearing far outside his usual wandering range, but he'd felt the need for a good long gallop, and sleep had been elusive. So what else was there to do? He'd run.. Run until night faded into early morning, run until the fingers of dawn stretched across the sky and banished his beloved stars... Run until he'd come to this small clearing, and decided to stay.
He'd spent much of his day lazing about the little glade, drinking from or wading in the stream-fed lake that was nestled in one corner.. Cropping grass or admiring the scattered wildflowers that dotted the field like stars littered the sky at midnight. Practicing some of the moves his sire and grandsire had taught him...
"Now what?" He mused, knowing he'd have to return home soon enough... Tashika would worry if he disappeared for more then a day or so.. And he'd been gone most of the night, it would take him a decent amount of time to get back...
Not that he wanted to head back right away. Casing another look at the sky -and it was a pretty enough day with the sun peeking around fluffy white clouds and birds soaring and singing- he wondered if a bit of fun could just fall out of the sky for him. That would be just about perfect.
And anything was possible when you had friends who were wind Soquili...

As if he wished her from the stars...

Delphina glided to a stop at the edge of the glade, ending up about knee deep in the water. Well foo. She'd misjudged that landing. Her long white floated atop the water, fanning out around her. The water was nice and she was hot, so the wind mare stood in the somewhat shallow waters. She was rather small...So shallow wasn't so shallow for her. The water rippled out from where she stood, and she watched the little waves lap at the shore.

She lowered her head to take a drink, mulling over her situation. Daddy would be worried if she was gone for to long, and if he got to worried, he'd call in the cavalry to come find her. She loved her father, but sometimes... She shook her head, hair flipping out of the water to splatter water all over her. She gave a soft, tinkling laugh flipping the hair out of her face and back into the water.

That was another way to cool off...

Fate and irony must be close friends indeed. Getting used to the silence? Too used to it? Here you go then... Fate whispered, and Irony gave her a hand. In fell another soquili, just as he had thought.
Ash straightened from his bow to investigate a cluster of purple and blue flowers, ears flicking to fix in the direction of the newly arrived Soquili. What had he just been thinking? Anything was possible when you had friends who were wind Soquili... Friends with wings indeed! Not necessarily one of the ones he had expected to fall in on him -Aureate would have not minded in the least tumbling in on his quiet time- but not a stranger either.
"Greetings Delphina." He murmured in amusement, recognizing her even though it had been some time since last they'd met. "Your timing is quite good, though I doubt you intended it to be so."
He made a rumbling sound of amusement as he moved toward her, tail flicking idly as slow, easy steps carried him to the center of the glade, then just a little beyond it. He didn't crowd to the edge of the lake, but paced parallel to its edge, considering her with interest.
"What brings you so far out of your normal way?" He wondered with a curious glance, brow arching. "I'm sure your father will begin to worry if you're gone too long."
He knew Tyzaeph all too well. Too long? It probably had already been 'too long'...

The wind mare lifted her head, turning slightly to glance at the stallion on the shore. Ashrialto... It had been a long time since she'd seen him. One of Daddy's best friends. Her crush since she was a filly... Lavender eyes locked on his pale ones for a moment before she looked away and fought her blush. Collecting herself, Delphina turned back to him, smiling her greeting. "Hello Ashrialto..." Folding her wings more into her sides, Delphy moved more toward the shore.

Her heart sank at his words about her father. What had she expected though? A declaration of his undying love? Bah. Get real Delphina. When he looked at her, he saw her father, and she was going to have to deal with that. "I wanted to go for a fly... Get away from everything for a little bit. Didn't expect to run into anyone out here, let alone someone I knew..." She gave a half smile, hair falling to cover an eye. "I've been gone to long since I left this morning... He'll survive until I return later tonight."

She hoped. It would be rather embarrassing if her father came rushing after her like she was a filly.

Ash smiled his usual charming grin, silver eyes glinting happily. It was good to see Delphina again, they hadn't spent any time together in a long while... Ash had been out wandering and, well, he wasn't sure what Delphina had been doing with herself.. When he did run into Ty or his family, he passed along greetings and well-wishes for all, and then off he went again.
Wandering ran in his family, strongly. Though they always came back home, and they loved till the end of their days... Their hooves had a habit of carrying them off now and again. And since Ash had no one to call beloved, wandering became his main source of entertainment and joy.
Not that it seemed particularly appealing anymore when Delphina crashed into his solitude and shattered it to nothingness with her lovely presence. He took another couple of steps toward her, admiring the gleam of her wings as she folded them to her back. She was beautiful, his -his?, certainly not!- friend Delphina. It was no wonder at all her father was so protective of her...
Silver eyes met soft lavender ones, and the stallion gave a coltish snort of pleasure, glancing away for a moment. "If you're worried I will return and tell your father I caught you flying about far, far away from home..."
He rolled his eyes, meeting her gaze head on with a charming smile. "You know me better then that, Del.. Truly.. I wouldn't ever, I know how you love to fly..."
He glanced at the sky as though nervous, giving her a conspirator's wink. "Perhaps we should take a walk in the woods, so he's less likely to see us should he be walking overhead? You can always tell him my father sent you to talk to me..."
It certainly wasn't out of the realm of possibility.. And if they went for a walk, he could spend some time with her.. Ask her what she'd been up to.. Isn't that what friends did?

Delphina smiled softly, face flushing at the way he was looking at her. Ducking her head to take a drink and try to recover, the female stretched out her wings and ruffled them. She felt safe with Ash, like she had a knight watching over her. Like, nothing and no one would hurt her with him around. That was a really nice feeling...

"Daddy will learn eventually that I can handle myself... Sometimes he's just to over protective. I'm most certainly not made of glass."

She smiled brightly at him, wandering fully out of the water. " I do know you better than that, and I know you would never." She ruffled her wings again, preening at him.

"A walk in the woods? Sure, why not." She grinned at him, walking off ahead of him.

Ash watched Delphina pause to drink before splaying and resettling her wings. He admired the lovely colored appendages, smiling faintly at her spirit. Tyzaeph was the protective sort, not unheard of for stallions with lovely mares for daughters... And Delphina was lovely.
"I know you're not made of glass." He chuckled. "Fire and feathers, but no glass.. Come on then, Lovely Delphina.. Let's go for a walk and enjoy the day..."
He trotted to catch up to her, his tail flicking to tap at her leg playfully as he grinned. "So what have you been up to? I've seen the others now and again when I visited.. But no sign of you.. Have you been well?"
He turned his attention to the thick greenery around them, glad there was a wide trail into the woods so they could keep pace side-by-side for awhile. A breeze drifted through the trees, plucking at plants and flowers, toying with Ash's mane.

Delphina corralled her long white hair to one side, smiling when he caught up with her, loving that tail of his. He was such a special stallion, with that tail of a lion. Delphina often forgot his heritage, his mother an Alicorn like her father, grandmother and great grandmother. Daddy took a lot of pride in being an Alicorn from such a strong line, telling her all the time about all of her family through her grandfather. She didn't really like her grandfather, from the stories she'd heard about him. His hatred of grounds eluded her, all of her friends were grounds... Ash was a ground.

"I've been with my Momma, brother and his family..." She beamed, someone to brag to about her niece and nephew! "I have a niece and a nephew now! My brothers mate is a unicorn, and his daughter is too... Now my nephew..." She had to grin, ruffling her own wings. "Is an Alicorn! Daddy is so proud of him. I'm worried about my niece though... I think she envys her bothers wings...And I think Daddy and I may have made it worse. I mean, we both doted on him because neither of his parents have wings. I tried to spend as much time with her, but she's very quiet, shy...Like me when I was a foal."

Delphina sighed softly, shaking her head. "I'm so proud of them... But I'm kind of jealous too. I do so want a family, and seeing my brother so happy cemented it for me..." She was whining, wasn't she? She was jealous of her brother, and his happiness. How could she not be though? He had everything she could have ever wanted and more. A mate that loved him so much it hurt, and 2 beautiful foals to call his own. What did she have? An unrequited crush on a male who didn't see her that way.

Just perfect.

Ash gave a lazy stretch as they paced along, arching his neck as his tail coiled around to one side, then flicked back, its movements lazy and catlike. He was content, around Delphina and... Well. Somehow the wind mare was different then his other friends...
Phaedra and Kaishara were playful and competitive with him... As were any stallions he cared to call by that title... Masque was one for quiet conversation, soft stories, secrets... No one could keep a secret like Masque, that much Ash knew. Daliu was also one for competition, dares, games, and mischief. Endlessly mischief.
Delphina.. Well, Delphina Ash was more than happy with just being alongside. She could fly and he could not, though he did like to watch... They could race or walk, have a conversation or be silent.. He just liked, being with her.
"That's wonderful!" He grinned, glad she had been able to visit her relations. He knew it hurt Delphina that her parents were not together, a problem he knew he would never have... Not with his parents or his grand parents... It was just, the way of his family.
And he certainly wouldn't do anything but follow in their hoofprints.
"I am glad your family is growing.. And that your brother has found happiness." He frowned faintly, making a note to seek out Kato and his lady and find how they were doing.
He laughed. Tyzaeph was no doubt proud over his family, especially those of both wing and horn.. Like Ash's own mother.
"I am sure she will be well, especially if you are about to offer her friendship, hmm?" He offered reassuringly, nosing her cheek.
Her sudden sadness made him pause, his tail flicking to stroke her haunches as he rumbled soothingly. He could have easily curled around her, such a tiny thing she was. "Del... What's wrong?"

The wind mares ears fell and and wings drooped, a sigh escaping her. With his tail caressing her, and the way he stood near her, Del almost felt that she stood with a mate giving her comfort, not that she stood with a friend. Aside from the fact her heart ached for him to feel the same way as she did, her mothers new mate and children hurt her.

"Momma... Momma has new foals. And a mate... And Orion being so happy. They have new family's now... And Daddy and I don't." With every fiber of her being, Del wanted a family. She wanted a mate who loved her, and children she could raise... A whole family for once in her life.

"I want a whole family... Not just my Daddy. I want a mate who loves me... foals." The mare hung her head, bangs falling to cover her eyes. "I'm sorry..." She murmured, lavender eyes looking up at him. "I'm whining... We're suposed to be having a good time..."

Keen ears pitched to catch the sound of that sigh, the alicorn-blooded stallion turning faintly to consider his long-standing friend. Such a sad sound should not escape so lovely a creature, Delphina should have someone to take care of her, to love her and be sure that always she was happy. And if that could not be, at least he would be a shoulder for her to lean on until her sorrow passed.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked at the heavy sigh, nosing her cheek. "You know you can tell me Del.. You can tell me anything."
He listened to her talk of her mother and brother, and their new families. It was something he could understand. "I know what that is like, so no, you're not whining.. My own brother has found himself a lady, and I do not think it will be long before a family follows after.."
The midnight colored stallion sighed, tail twitching. "I am happy he has found someone.. But I too wish to settle with a lady and start a family of our own.. Watching my father and grandfather does not help, you know how they are..."
He nosed her gently. "Smile, beautiful friend... I'm sure that when you find your stallion, he will be more then happy to pledge the rest of life to you..."
And I will try to forget how much I wish that stallion was me...

'You have no idea how much I wish that stallion was you...'

She wanted to say it. She really did. She wanted to tell Ash how much she cared about him, how she'd had a crush on him since she was a filly. How she wanted him for the rest of her days on this land. How could she though? She didn't see any signs that he care about her as more than a friend... With the way he was touching her, caring for her... She almost thought her feelings were reciprocated.

She could tell him anything, couldn't she?

Delphina felt more than heard Ash's sigh, lifting her head to rub under his chin. "You'll find someone Ash..." She murmured, keeping her head under his chin. "Your a good, strong and sweet male... Any mare would be lucky to have you."

Taking a deep breath, Delphina knew that this was as good a moment as she was going to get. Her father had always told her to go for it, you never knew until you tried. Keeping her head tucked under his chin, Del decided to jump in.

"I know I can tell you anything... And I really need to tell you this. I have found my stallion... You." The mare felt the heat on her cheeks, and she sent prayers up to the heavens she didn't just ruin their friendship if he didn't feel the same.

Ashrialto gave another mental sigh, sorting through his tumbling thoughts. He had long ago decided that he would be the gentleman until the end with all the mares he considered his friends. Though there was nothing indecent about telling the one you loved that she was the only one you wanted to share your life with... If that mare did not feel the same, Ash did not want to have to live with a broken friendship and a broken heart.
So he wouldn't ever tell Delphina of his feelings... That way when her dream stallion came along, she could go with him and be happy.. And in the end, wasn't that exactly what you wanted for the one you loved? You wanted them to be happy... Even if you weren't.
He gave her an apologetic smile as he removed his tail from her flank and took a half step to the side to there was space between them again. The rub under his chin had made him smile, turning to nuzzle at her cheek.
"I would like to think I shall..." He murmured. "And I thank you for your faith in me, and your kind words..."
He curled his head over her again, selfishly allowing himself to enjoy her at his side. He made a pleased sound when she agreed she could tell him anything, valuing her trust in him more then many other things in his life. Most things...
So she'd already found someone? His ears flicked, tail lashing to one side as he longed to tear himself away from her and spare his heart the ache, not the first, but certainly the most grievous injury it had yet to sustain. But he couldn't pull away, he had to at least continue being her friend.
Except...
"What?" He murmured in surprise. "Del..."
He craned his head down to meet her eye, quite a feat since she seemed to be ducking and fighting not to meet his gaze. "Did you just say... it's me?" He rubbed his face against her neck, laughing into her mane. "Del... I've loved you from the day you became a mare..."
His laughter rang louder as he curled his tail around her haunches and nuzzled at her face again. "It's always been you..."

Delphina's heart fell to her hooves when he moved away, putting space between them that the mare didn't want. She wanted him touching her, near her... Loving her. When she took that leap of faith, telling him how she felt, the mare didn't know what to expect.

She felt him tense at her words, heart falling even farther, if that was possible. She couldn't help the tears that gathered on her lashes as she prepared to take the worst blow of her life. Worse than her parents, her brother...

At his question, Del nodded, fighting back the tears. The mare waited for the blow that never came... He what? Her loved her? Delphina's heart soared into her throat, and she couldn't help the happy tears that leaked from her eyes. It had always been her!

She gave her own watery laugh, pressing her face in the thick muscle of his neck, trying to stem her tears. "I've loved you for just as long... You. Yes, its you..." Shifting her wing, the mare pressed against his side as best she could. "You've been my dream stallion since I was a filly..."

The mixed-blood stallion gave a wide smile at the surprised look and soft laugh that escaped her. He much preferred the laugh to the sad silence of a few moments before, but he'd always liked Delphina's laugh.. And her smile... How had they danced around each other for so long?
Not that it mattered now...
"Ahh now little Pixie..." He tsked as she hid against his neck, laughing softly as he curled his head over her, holding her gently, his tail twining around her nearest leg as he rumbled softly. "Don't cry, Del.. Not even happy tears, hmm?"
Nosing her, he gave another grin. "Hmm? Let me see those lovely eyes, Del. You don't know how much I missed you when I was wandering..." He sighed. "I really wasn't happy when I came back to visit and you weren't ever home. Your father said you were off flying here or there, or visiting your family. But, I missed you."
He gave a faint frown, nuzzling her again. He knew Delphina was sad about her family being fractured, her parents living apart and looking for their happiness elsewhere. But Ash knew Tyzaeph would find someone to to ride the wind with, and he would be happy. Which was good, Ty was a friend of the whole family, like Del, though perhaps not as well loved.
Ash grinned wider, nipping at her mane playfully. "I love you..."
It was exciting to be allowed to say it now, and not have to worry about losing her friendship forever.
