Background:[Chou is of Japanese and American descent. Her direct family consists of her mother, father, and older brother. Every year the whole family would spend their summer in the father's homeland, Japan. Life was seemingly normal for the four of them. For one summer as the family was en route to the airport, they were attacked by a few homunculi. They were so organized and coordinated that later when Chou relived this incident in her dreams Chou believed this was an ambush instead of an unlucky random attack. The homunculi over-turned the car to the side of the car laughing and teasing the disoriented family that tried to stay conscious. With no avail Chou's older brother and father both went limp. Panic oppressing Chou's mind, froze her to the spot as the homunculi stalked their prey stuck in the car.
Her mother, Shay, seemed composed and even determined as she wiggled her way out of the car. Seeing this, the homunculi struck out at Shay. Talons bit into her shoulder ruthlessly, shredding flesh to the bone. The blood curdling scream ensued; it was too unbearable to hear. Chou never heard such a scream before that echoed passed her mother's lips. Before her scream of utter pain died down she whispered three words that were filled with deep hatred, retribution, and agony: "Buso Renkin: Zodiac...Offensive mode." Her chest shone a blinding, bright hue briefly before it died down and left in its wake, one overgrown tiger. The creature wasn't like its smaller, seemingly tamer counter-part. Its coat was a light orange with black insistent stripes flowing across its body that leveled off around Shay's shoulder's while standing on four legs. Its claws dug into the paved road, its murderous intent emitting off of it in waves. The tiger locked onto it prey and lunged with a burst of speed.
Chou was in awe and terrified at the same time. She didn’t know her mother had such a frightening power. She was so enraptured by the tiger and the homunculus fighting each other that she didn’t see the other creep to the car. As it got close enough it dug its claws into the side door and wrenched it free from its hinges. Chou looked at the grossly disfigured homunculus with horror filled eyes. Only a whimper escaped her lips as the homunculus struck, only to be knocked off its balance by the sniveling tiger. “Chou!” Her mother yelled—her attention averted from her death threat. That sliver of inattention gave the now injured homunculus enough time to attack her once again but this time, it aimed to kill, sinking its grotesque fangs into her mother’s neck. No sound erupted from her mouth this time, only the gurgling noise of blood that was gushing out of her mouth. As her life slipped away from her grasp her tiger faded away leaving her family defenseless.
Chou looked on in utter shock; her mother did not just die before her eyes… her mother just did not…
Anger welled coursed through her veins accompanied with brutal revenge. Chou struggled, wiggled, then charged out the car to the nearest homunculus, hitting and kicking it repeatedly. “You killed her! You killed her!” She sobbed not letting up with her impacts. It only inflicted little damage. The homunculus picked her up from her waist and carelessly threw her towards her dead mother, laughing with gleeful anticipation. The other homunculus already ventured to the car and dragged out her father and older brother. Instead of killing them outright, the homunculus took to the air with the two of them in its talons. Chou’s body was throbbing from so many collisions with the ground. She was put into a short daze from the impact but looking at her dead mother’s face sobered her. “Mom…” She gasped, grimacing to keep back the tears that threaten to trickle down her face. She placed her hand on her mother’s chest where she saw the light originate from. It glowed faintly under her touch. Fascinated she opened up her mother’s shirt to see the kakugane surface from her body. She took it gingerly before her pursuer lashed at her with its talons, raking her back. Chou screamed, trying to remember how to breathe and move; at that moment she saw her father and brother in the talons of the other homunculus. “No, no, no…” she chanted. Before the homunculus could strike again, Chou gripped the kakugane and ran. She ran for her life. She ran away from her dead mother. She ran in hopes of saving the only family she had left.
Instead of the homunculus following her like she thought it, it stayed behind. Bile rose as she thought on why it would stay behind with a corpse instead of chasing her.
From then on, Chou ventured alone with her blood crusted clothes, clutching on to the only thing that her mother had—her kakugane, until a fellow kakugane user spotted it and interrogated her, but she soon became too weak to even stand, let alone sit up. Chou passed out from too much loss of blood.
When she awoke she was in the St. Germaine Hospital with the kakugane place in her own chest.
She learned about Buso Renkin, alchemists and the monsters she faced were called homunculus. She wanted revenge for her family so she joined with the alchemists in hopes to rid the world of all homunculus.]
