It had taken weeks to determine, but at long long last, Iya had decided that she liked this Earth planet.

Small hands brushed out the few wrinkles on her dress, then moved up to fluff the mass of curls atop her head. While the others were busy goofing off or trying to collect energy (she suspected the majority was up to the former, though), she had decided to take it upon herself to go incognito and investigate the planet's lifeforms a little closer. It was good to know what one was working with, right?

Once her hair was deemed satisfactory (no doubt to be toyed with again in minutes to come), she departed from within the trees of the Park and started making her way in the direction of the Destiny City Shopping Center. She hadn't made it out very far past the trees when she stopped to fix her hair once more, thanks to the horrible wind.

Grumbling to herself, she took refuge on the nearby bench, her hands automatically rising up to comb themselves between her curls.

Like the disguised girl fighting with her unruly hair, Sheldon had too not gotten to his intended destination. Though, not from distraction but from sheer choice of not wanting to go. Oddly enough he had gotten dressed in his Sovereign Heights uniform, all set to see if per chance his attendance in classes that day would be at all necessary - tests were bound to be coming up after all - but within a block of his own building he had decided to ******** it all and gone a completely different direction.

But unlike Iya, he had made it to the Shopping Center and picked up his belated reserve copy of Final Fantasy XIII, along with finding a version of Monopoly he oddly didn't possess already. Purchases in tow and wanting to escape the thin crowd of people lingering in the mall, Sheldon made his way to the Park. If anything he would have just ventured back home to his box but knowing that park was in a good walking distance made it a little more ideal before he decided to trek home.

It was a nice little recreational area really, not like many of them weren't. Public sure, but open enough that no one was bound to bother him too much. And he could smoke there without the heated glares like at the little patch of grass near his place. Which was what he was doing, along with reading the back of the video game box, when Iya plopped herself down in the bench right next to his. His yellow eyes glanced up to her general direction, watching her as she combed her hair briefly before returning to the last paragraph of synopsis.

She smelled him before she saw him.

The unwelcomed scent of cigarette smoke forced her nose into scrunching up - what in the world was that?!

Her head turned, curls bouncing with the movement, and dark eyes fell on the boy sitting nearby. He looked like a regular human boy, but regular human boys had never smelled like that.

Rising from the bench, she wandered slowly into his direction, her head tilting curiously as she watched him read. There was something sticking out of his mouth, something that looked like rolled up paper....but it was smoking.

Fascinated, she watched as he would bring the paper up and then away from his lips, smoke exhaled from between his lips with each drag of the cigarette.

Failing to possess any sort of manners, one hand shot out to point in the direction of his face. "Hey you. What's that you're eating?"

If he was aware of her watching him was really up to debate, he had some inkling but only because she had gotten up in that slow curious manner towards him. Sheldon didn't pay much attention to her really and just casually returned the game box back into its bag until later use. He leaned back against the bench in a lazy slouch and took another long drag from his cigarette before his eyes caught her again watching him intently.

An eyebrow raised, followed by a series of confused blinks as Sheldon just stared at the young girl. Surely that inquiry was unexpected; he was sure some accusation or some sour demand was sure to come from her. "This?" He raised his hand holding the remains of his cigarette towards her and finally gave himself a moment to get a better look at her. The girl was young, sure, but should have been old enough to know what a cigarette was. Unless she was one of those sheltered types, maybe a lock in or a girl in a bubble?

"Well," Sheldon began placidly after bringing the filter back to his mouth to take another puff, "if you'd like to be technical I guess you could say its a roll of tobacco with other volatile and addicting additives." He shifted in his seat, bringing an arm up to rest again the top of the bench. "Though, can't say I'm eating it." He added with a smile.

"Never seen a cigarette before?" That just had to be asked really.

Eyebrows furrowed as she stared at his face, then at the cigarette, and then back towards his face again. Her nose scrunched up once more (it stunk!) but Iya had no intentions of going anywhere until this mystery had resolved itself.

"Volatile additive," she echoed dutifully, trying to act as though she knew what he was saying. Clearly, she didn't, and the human seemed to have guessed it right off the bat (which was fairly frustrating - how was she supposed to pretend to be one of them if they had all this weird stuff she wasn't used to?!) "Tooobacco."

Without so much as an invitation, the short girl plopped down beside the older boy, making herself comfortable on the bench as she straightened out her poofy skirt. "Explain what a cigarette is and why do you keep sticking it in your mouth if you're not gonna eat it?"

Oh jeez. He was probably right on his train of thought about her being a lock in, or maybe amnesia? Or he was an unlucky victim being taped by the TRUTH campaign people. Sheldon had a very unhappy mental frown even though there was a look of indifference on his actual face. Didn't even bat an eye when she sat down, though he shifted a little to wedge himself in the corner just a little bit more.

"Um." Apparently she hadn't heard him the first time. Snubbing out the remains of his cigarette in the ashtray next to the bench, Sheldon pulled out his near empty pack from his pocket and held it lamely up towards her. "Cigarettes," he began again, repeating himself as such, "Rolled up tobacco with other volatile and addictive additives." And just to add on, in as simple and as pleasant sounding as he could make for her. "You don't eat the sticks; you light one end on fire and pretty much inhale the smoke it gives off."

She peered at him, then returned to staring at the lit up cigarette.

Now Iya had learned of many things since their landing to Earth. She'd learned about doors, of candy, of the enter-net, of many many things. But cigarettes was a new concept. It seemed silly, honestly, to stick something in your mouth if you had no intentions of eating it!

"Why would you inhale smoke?"

Was there some human secret behind cigarettes? What was so special about smoking that it made them want to stick rolled up tobacco in their mouths and inhale?

Reaching out one hand, palm flat, she stared up at him expectantly.

"I would like one."

Huh. Both set of suspicions still cycling in his head, Sheldon continued to answer her interesting question in his lazy manner, "A lot of people smoke for different reasons." Him? Peer pressure combined with the need to stray away from his 'old life and old friends' and just rebel. He wasn't going to divulge that to her though, he never did to anyone really, "Relaxation, to deal with stress, they like the smell of it, they just can't quit. Stuff like that." He shrugged. And he was sure she wasn't looking for a history lesson, oh boy that would take some time he did not wish to waste.

His hand was in the motion of recoiling back into his pocket when he noticed her hand placed out and her intentions stated. Yellow eyes blinked down at the small hand back to her determined little face, his lips pursed for a moment. Slowly, he took one of his remaining cigarettes out of the cardboard box and placed it in her open palm. It wasn't like he could condemn her for wanting to try one, he started smoking when he was like thirteen after all. The scientific and curious side of his brain, the one that was usually shoved away, wanted to see what she would do.

She stared at it.

Her hand remained still as dark eyes moved from end to end of the small rolled up piece of paper. It was peculiar looking, with dark stringy stuff on one end. Her other hand moved out to pick at the stringy stuff... but she stopped. This boy hadn't been picking at his stringy stuff, so that was probably a Bad Thing to do, right?

Fingers closed around the cigarette and she looked up at him once more to see how he had it poised in his mouth. She wanted to make sure she was doing it right. She was going to do it right - she was Iya. Iya did things right!

Popping the tan end in her mouth, she immediately inhaled on the stick as hard and quickly as she could.

Nothing happened.

She tried harder. Her cheeks were turning red.

Nothing happened.

Finally, she tried so hard at inhaling, she ended up choking on her own spit. Out came the cigarette and she stared at it accusingly before turning and staring at the boy in the same manner.

"You gave me a DUD."

Sheldon really shouldn't have been surprised she had expected it to magically light itself on fire and really he wasn't. The teen found himself amused and howling with laughter, enough that if he pushed himself further into the bench that he would most likely topple over. Oh, how long it had been since he'd gotten a good laugh in. The look on her reddened sour looking face was priceless. Sheldon rested the palm of his unoccupied hand on his forehead and slide it down his face to regain his composure.

"Aaa," He sighed happily, righting himself up and to a 'normal' seated position. He might as well continue to indulge her after going through all of this. "They don't go up on their own," He explained to her with a grin, fishing around the pocket inside the blazer of his uniform for his lighter. Target acquired, he pulled it out and opened it with a soft click, "it needs a little help." The little flame danced around on the wick of the lighter as he shook another cigarette out of the carton and held it to the small fire. There was a little sizzle and a pop, another burst of fire on the end of the cigarette until that fizzled into a nice steady stream of smoke.

With the grin still plastered on his face, he held the newly lit 'rolled paper' towards her just in case she wanted to switch it with her 'dud.'

She couldn't help but shoot a glare in his direction, her face reddening as he broke into laughter. She didn't see what was so funny about all of this - had he intentionally tricked her??

"I.. I knew that." She countered, cheeks now scarlet as she listened to him explain and light up the second cigarette. "I was just. I was just testing you, is all. Just a test."

Curiosity overtook her once more as she picked up the new smoking stick from his hand. The fire was fascinating, the smell putrid. Did people really inhale these things?

Bringing the paper up to her mouth, she inhaled eagerly, her lungs soon taking in a much much more disgusting taste. If she thought the coughing earlier was bad, she was in for one nasty surprise. She was gagging, choking, coughing out the horrible taste that now filled her mouth. It didn't take long for her stomach to churn from the flavor, her head feeling lighthearted. How... how awful!

It took a few minutes to compose herself, her eyes filling with tears from the intensity of her coughing. Her glare was venomous, wishing she could shoot holes into the older boy - she bet he was gonna laugh at her again. Stupid human. Stupid humans, all of them, and their stupid cigarettes and stupid earth and just... stupid stupid stupid!

"Smoking is stupid." Came the eventually huff as she rose from the bench, flattening out her wrinkled skirt. Not allowing him to offer any rebuttal, she stormed off, blonde curls bouncing with every huffy step.
