Maybe because lolita looks a little different than normal clothes. Going outside in lolita can be an intimidating thought to me. I don't look forward to stares and stuff, especially since I got so used to trying to blend into the background and not cause any attention to myself.

But then again, the attention doesn't have to be a bad thing. People can look at you and think you're an interesting person and not actually a weirdo for dressing differently. And people may not even pay any attention to you at all. I mean you're just a stranger and no one real important, right? People have their own thing going on, it's not everyone is guaranteed to stare at you just because you're wearing a dress, right?

Hm that interesting. I usually like to dress up for the heck of it or when I'm going out with friends. It's more of a fun thing.
My friends know I don't follow trends. So going outside with lolita is something they don 't mind.

Of course I get stares and such but I don't really mind or pay attention because I'm usually with friends. biggrin

It deffinetly can boost a girl confidence... It helps to know that you like what you are wearing... You just have to make sure you dont turn stuck up and a meanyhead over it... And if ppl stare at them let them... It just means that they know you are there....

remember that if someone says that is silly or ugly they are
1) jelous over how cute u look
2) they fail! and cant see you true beauty
3) YOU DONT HAVE THE CONFIDENCE TO BE IN PUBLIC WEARING LOLITA

If the answer is 3 slowly work ur way into it... start by wearing casual loita. You gain more confidence the more you wear loita... This I promise you... I was absolutely depressed but when I wear lolita I grew out of it. I feel like I can do whatever and i feel comfy doing it.

It deffinetly makes your confidence level go high... One step at a time. heart

I think it definitely is.
If you're afraid to go out in lolita because of stares or whatever, doing it a bit at a time pushes your comfort zones and eventually expands it, which leads to a higher confidence level.
If you go from saying "But I'll get stared at!" to "I don't care if they stare at me, I look like a goddamned princess" then I think it's safe to say that's quite a boost in self-esteem. :3

Or you're just BAMF enough not to care.

Something about a BAMF lolita just tickles me pink. I had an idea for an action film called The Lolita, but I only ever figured out enough plot for a trailer.

Hahah that saying does the same to me. XD
If you ever get it in the making, I'd love to see it. Lolita action? O___o
Like. . .Lolitas hijacking cars and going on epic chases? With guns and tasers and SPLOSIONS???!?!?!?

When someone says something nasty to me about how I dress, I usually retort with something really cutting and then strut off like I could care less. For example, RANDOM GIRL: "Why are you wearing [neon purple skinny jeans] [your grandma's prom dress][seven inch hooker heels]?" ME: "Uh, sweetheart, that's because [you couldn't squeeze into them][I actually look like I'm female, ergo, a dress][you left them at that guys house who paid you for sex so I figured I'd borrow them]."

But I gotta be honest with y'all, really, these retorts stem from a deep sense of insecurity, and not the confidence it seems like they come from. I really believe that if I was confident enough, I could just ignore those girls altogether. But I was picked on a LOT before high school, and never really got over it. So I'd have to say that lolita and my other crazy clothes help me pretend that I'm more confident, which for me I guess is the first step to actually believing it. I don't cry when I get home anymore, and I honestly believe my friends and fiance now when they tell me I'm gorgeous and cool.

Lolita is the only thing that I do 100% for myself. I enjoy doing it for me and me alone. Let me clarify with some examples: I work hard in school partly for me and my future and partly to make my parents and teachers proud. I did martial arts because I wanted to, but I injured myself trying to surpass expectations and make my Shihan proud. These were not 100% for me. They were for others as well and I found myself tired and depressed. Lolita is something that I do for myself. It makes me feel great. It makes me confident, because I don't care what anyone else thinks, because I did it for me, not them. Even in the lolita community, it's nice to get compliments and give them (y'all are so cute!), but I don't need anyone's approval, and I don't do it to make anyone proud. It empowers me.

The whole thing, how you do it just for you and you enjoy it just for that reason. It's a good example, I'd like to be like that more often. I worry too much about what other people think.

I think it could be. But like they said, you have to be confortable with yourself. I dress how i dress because i hate to be the "normal" girl. I really don't enjoy wearing the ambercrombie or whatever. And i hate being labeled. So if i wear something that's unheard of here in the states, or michigan, to really be exact, then i feel better about myself. Yes. people stare, talk, and laugh at me. It always happens. But it's been happening for all of my life, because i like things that DONT look normal. I enjoy wearing men's shirts with skirts. I enjoy having yarn falls in my hair. and Dammit, i enjoy wearing frilly dresses and eating candy! I don't care what other's really think of me, and i dont ever want to be normal. I like japanese things and styles... that'll never be normal here...

Wow! Thank you! biggrin
I've had to deal with being different, so I think that taught me a lot about not caring what other people think. At one point (for a week or so) I worried that other lolitas might not like the way I portray the fashion. Then, I thought about how I wear it for me and not them. After that, I wasn't worried anymore! I am just me doing what I love. Other people will always think what they think no matter what I do, so I just don't care. It's not my problem that they get these notions in their heads.
