Thuk! Splat!...Thuk! Squack!...Thuk! Shhlt!

Phew. Weyard paused for a brief moment, letting her bloody axe rest propped between her knee and the slab she'd been using for the dirty work of beheading assorted animals. Deftly she slipped a hand out of the thick leather gloves she'd been given to flick the sweat and loose hair from her forehead. This work, while unpleasant, was for a good purpose. Good exercise too! All the meats that passed onto the long tables for breakfast lunch and dinner had to start somewhere, be killed, beheaded and gutted, skinned or plucked, and cleaned, all before they could enter the kitchen.

She hefted the hatchet once more and swiftly finished off the last few poor wherries meant for the table that night. Minutes later she hunched over a small trough of water, eagerly splashing it over the blade before scouring it clean. Several others had joined her in the cleaning: one person alone couldn't do nearly enough work to have the vast amounts of food ready as were needed, and she joined in mild chatter with them. Talk of firelizards was common, and of course, this and that about dragons. Future clutches and flights were ever popular to discuss, even though no one could be sure when either event was set to take place. A couple of older boys seemed intent on making it clear to a few of the other girls just how excited they were for the next flight, which brought rousing boos from the gathered masses and enough rolled eyes to turn the eggs themselves on the sands.

After cleaning her axe and herself, Weyard made her farewells to the others and started the hike to the nearby caverns where most of the supplies used for this sort of work were kept. The noise of the other candidates fell away into a muted burbling behind her and she smiled, enjoying one of those rare moments of calm in an otherwise busy life. So enamored was she of the quiet that she nearly stumbled over someone. She pulled up just short and smiled not a bit sheepishly. "Sorry 'bout that! Think I was daydreamin'. You're alright, yeah?"

Milly has been blessed enough for the day that her candidate chores were spent assisting some of the cavern women in repairing blankets to be stored for winter, her deft hands searching over mile after mile of cloth for anything unsightly. Blankets and whatever else that had holes or stains were quickly set aside to be dealt with, be it through repair or being discarded, and thanks to the rather dull nature of their work several conversations of their own had sprung up. Milly wasn't privy to most of what they were saying, she was quite a few turns too young to have been there for some of the events, yet every now and then the topic would stray to something she knew and she could nod her agreement or shake it softly to disapprove.

Several of the ladies decided there must have been something they wanted to discuss in private about upcoming affairs so she was swiftly sent away, Milly bobbing her head in thanks before thankfully scampering off and out. She liked helping, she really did, but sometimes it just got too. . . .boring. She wasn't the type who could sit still for that long without doing something interesting so her dismissal came about at just the right time.

Millet quickly made plans to go and seek out some of the younger kids, one of them was celebrating their naming day if she could recall correctly, and she wanted to be there to play with them. Her mind was so full of games and chatter that it made her giggle happily, her mirth attracting two small creatures to jump from between and flutter around her. They were flitts, both blue, though one held a far darker shade to the finer coloring of its companion. Both of them chittered at her with happiness until they provided a suitable enough distraction, allowing the girl to literally be walked all over.

Thankfully the person did stop and she wasn't hurt, so Milly did her best to bite her tongue and act polite. This was a face she didn't recognize so there wasn't a name she could toss as while speaking, so . . .

"No, well. It was an accident on my side too, sorry. Trench and Gully were keeping me occupied, but I'm not hurt at all. The creche women tell me I'm something close to indestructible with how often I fall down yet come up unscathed."

At the mention of their names the lighter blue flitt shrieked and darted between while the darker of the two actually made to lunge for the woman, eyes red and hissing. How dare this person try to hurt his Millet!

Oh boy! Weyard ducked back a step just in time to dodge the thrashing little blue monster. "there there now, no harm was meant lil' guy!" She quickly slipped the axe down to rest against one of her legs so she could hold up her open hands to him to show no ill intent. She tried to think soothing thoughts, thoughts about warm sun on hot sands, food, and sleep...things firelizards liked. She even smiled at the little fellow before offering a sheepish look to the younger girl.

"Sorry about him. He's quite lovely, I didn't mean to bother him. Or nearly walk all over you! Hmm...sure look familiar, y'do." She tapped at her chin habitually for a moment while thinking. "Let's see...you're...Huhn. Well I forget the name, but you're that girl that the cheche ladies all love, yeah? Or at least you fit the bill." She thrust out a hand to shake (or be bitten by the flitt, whichever)

"Name's Weyard." She shifted the axe from her leg to the wall with her other hand before reaching up to brush a few stray hairs out of her face. "Sorry again about the little fellow. And the one that took off too, he seemed a bit alarmed. I hope he won't give you trouble later." She glanced at the remaining blue and nodded to him. "Tell you what, Trench...or are you Gully? Whichever, if you're still mad at me, how about I save you a roll from dinner, aye?" And back to Milly. "If that's alright with you. I don't wanna spoil them, but I'm not one to leave a bad taste in someone's mouth. Literally."

Milly was glad that the woman seemed to take it all in stride, most were pretty unhappy with how Trench behaved over things. She managed to call the blue creature back and get him into her arms, a firm embrace keeping his hissing and snapping from going anywhere except against her - and Trench wasn't about to bite Milly. When a hand was extended and her name (somewhat) asked, there was a bright grin on the youth's face as she thrust out her free hand to exchange names. This was good - she was meeting someone new!

"My name's Millet, but most people call me Milly. I don't mind answering to whatever you'd like to refer to me as. It's quite a pleasure to meet you Weyard - and yes this is Trench. I wouldn't spoil him though with a meatroll, it makes it seem like you're going to reward bad behavior. I'd like to break him of this habit but it's the personality he was shelled with."

Trench seemed to simmer down at the mention of his name in Milly's own voice, having bristled a bit as this other person had tried to speak with him. The young girl had worked hard to make sure her flitts knew their own names at the very least, to help prevent issues from happening.

"So um, Weyard. What brings you out this way today? I don't believe I have ever seen you around this section before, and I tend to try and keep myself moving about the Weyr. Makes it easier to find places and things when asked for it."

By moving about she meant 'running errands' but anyway. . . .
