Description
A relatively new Weyr, Malvren is carved into the cliffs of a coastal range of mountains. The stone is primarily marble and the architecture of the Weyr is known for its beauty. It is located along the coastline of the western 'continent' and its territories include the two large landmasses near it as well as the string of islands that arch south.
The cliffs are nearly 300ft high and the Weyr itself extends deep into the rock. Originally built this was so as to protect the Weyr from Thread, Malvren was one of the first Weyrs to make use of AIVAS technology in its construction and maintenance.
The herds of prey animals are kept on top of the cliffs where large open grasslands provide expansive rangeland. The Goldrider weyrs are located at the lowest level, along the beach, and line the cliff to either side of the Hatching Grounds. The Hatching Grounds themselves are a massive triple-bowl complex within the cliff to facilitate multiple clutches at once. It's rare to have more then two clutches on the Sands but it can happen. The rider weyrs are recessed into the cliff face and have modest ledges for dragons and riders alike to perch on - all the weyrs offer a spectacular view of the Ocean.
The beach before the Weyr is the most popular common area, though dragons and people will often prefer to bathe in the lake topside where the fresh water doesn't result in itchy skin. The Ocean is used primarily for fishing and recreation. The dwellings of the weyrfolk and other large community centers such as the kitchens are located about midway up the cliff and can be noted from the outside by a series of large, windows. It is centered above the Hatching Grounds.
Weyrling Barracks are near the top so that young flightless dragons are near their good source. Candidate Barracks are located nearby.
The winters, however, can be sharp and cold and stormy in Malvren. The flora and fauna are hardy and the riders likewise. Strong storms are common but the Weyr is sheltered from the blasting winds by being on the western coast of the continent, allowing dragons to take off and land without issue. Snow is generally uncommon but rain, and lots of it, plagues the Weyr in the winter. Cold and rainy in the winter but warm and relatively mild in the summer Malvren is not ideal but does not suffer the terribly snowy winters the Old Weyrs must endure.
Malvren can hold up to 400 dragons when at capacity.
