in ways we accept as part of fate's decree
Jax had spent most of his morning curled into his mother's embrace, gnawing lightly on his knuckles and snuggling his blankie, Raggy. He had watched sleepily as his mom toted him around this strange, quiet place that seemed to be made up of endless rooms and shelves. She grabbed book after book, yet never once did she read to him. What a strange phenomenon. This place was an equally strange place. Being a toddler, most places he was taken weren't very quiet. Most of them were filled with the sounds of other screaming toddlers.

He had managed to wander away from his mother's protective grasp, and was now exploring these endless rows of colorful bound spines and polished wood. He saw no other toddlers his age, although this didn't necessarily distress him. Being the quiet boy he was, he did quite enjoy a bit of peace every now and then. He murmered something to Raggy, stroking his tiny paw digits over his best friend's fuzzy exterior. He continued toddling down the hallway, now realizing he saw very few others at all. He saw some, but they were all spaced out and none were talking to eachother. From what he had gathered from his few years, this was unusual behavior for the usually social humans.

He ended up climbing up a chair to reach a table top, and by the time he got there his claws were extended and his tail was puffed up due to the extreme effort. He huffed quietly. "Geez waweez." He grabbed now what had caught his eye before- a pencil and a handful of varying sized papers. These were simply the pieces of scrap paper used by others to write down book info. He didn't know, nor did he care. For the next while, these scraps would be the source of his entertainment. With much effort, the little kitten boy climbed back down to the floor, and for a few more minutes he wandered the aisles.

His ears twitched, and he stopped for a moment. He suddenly plopped into a sit, having decided he liked the quiet little spot that he found. He sat in a semi-squat, tail swaying back and forth uncertainly, big green eyes sweeping around what he could see of the room. Which wasn't much. He was just a little man in an intensely large environment at the moment. He set down the scraps now, and crumpled the ones that were already written on. He tossed these haphazardly under the nearest table, and then grabbed his new pencil. Time to create art.

The library full of books and information was just the place Victoria was looking for. Everything it had to offer was free... With the exception of late fees. However, she never planned on checking out a book. She just had questions.

Victoria who had been running her fingers along the spines of the books as she glanced at the titles happened to catch site of the little boy sitting on the floor doodling on scrap paper. She couldn't help but notice how he just carelessly through away what he didn't want.

Victoria bent over and collected the tossed aside crumbled balls. "You really shouldn't do this," she said to the little boy as she put them into the nearest waist bin. "It is rude."

The tot looked up at the girl with curious eyes, canting his head to one side. He refrained from pouting, although that usually was his first reaction to being scolded. He settled back slightly, setting down his pencil on top of his sketches. "Wude?" He parroted. "W'at dat? Why I can' do?" What was that word? His youthful curiosity is what distracted him from sulking. He hadn't heard it before... And he also had no idea who this girl was.

He cuddled his blankie to his chest at that realization. Where did she come from? He blinked once or twice. "Who yew?" He questioned, although he didn't seem to wary. He was a pretty outgoing toddler, after all.

Victoria took the snuggling of the blanket as a sign she had intimidated him. She hadn't meant to. So that she wouldn't tower over him while they talked she sat down Indian style in front of him. She positioned her dress so it hung over her knees and covered all of her legs. After all she was a lady.

"It is all about manors and how you react in certain situations," Victoria smiled. "Instead of throwing your trash where ever you please, throw it in a garbage can. Or, if the paper is still usable save it for someone else to use."

"I'm Victoria," she replied. "And, I came from around the corner. The library is a rather large place..."

The little one listened to her with the intentness that only seemed possible of a curious infant. His little ears came upright, and as she sat he let the blanket slowly come to rest back in his lap. He folded his paws together now, resting them atop his blankie. "Ma'ers? What dat?" He then looked to the waste basket where she had tossed his crumpled balls of paper, seeming now to acknowledge that it was the proper place to put them as per he specifications.

"'Kay." He agreed to these newly learned rules without any more questioning, as he seemed to understand that there was a lot of stuff going on in this world that he had yet to learn. He took a moment then to adjust Raggy so that he was straight in his lap. There we go, that's better...

"Vic'oria." He parroted, and then looked to her with a with a warm smile. He seemed to like her well enough so far- he thought she was really pretty. "I Jaxith." Despite his age and the fact he was always called 'Jax' or 'Jaxxy', he much preferred to call himself by his full first name.

His eyes widened at her statement, and he nodded in agreement, "Ve'y big! I nevah see'd place dis big a'fore. I walk for lon' time, lo'ssa books. But I can' read." He gave a small frown at his last statement.

Victoria thought back to her visit at the Curio shop and her meeting with Kay. "Just call me me Tori," she smiled. This was one of those instances where a shorter name was probably best.

Due to Jaxith being young and not fully use to talking just yet Victoria paid close attention to his facial expressions. That way if she didn't understand a word she could get the general idea. She smiled in all the right places of conversation but it faltered when his did as well.

"Jaxith, would you like to me read to you?" she asked. For once it wasn't about her. However, she was sure at one point or another that her good deed would be reward one way or another.

The tot looked up at the older girl in wonder. He smiled delightedly, "Ah! Tori wanna read to me?" Jax truly loved stories, and was often frustrated by the fact that he couldn't read them for himself.. But if this older pretty girl wanted to read one to him, that would be awesome!

With some effort he got back on his feet, only after carefully taking his drawings and pencil and stacking them neatly into a nice pile. He looked around thoughtfully, "Buh wha' book?"

He may only be a toddler, but he figured that turning on a bit of his charm and acting 'cute' might better his overall chances of getting read to. He hit her with a warm smile and extended his little paw towards her as if wanting to hold her hand in an endearing sort of manner. "We go fin' one?"

Victoria smiled as she watched Jaxith clean up his mess. It seemed that there little chat about manors had some effect.

"Let's go find a book," Victoria smiled and held out her hand. "It shouldn't be that hard to find a good one considering we are in a library," her voice was soft. "ABC's," she suggested.

The little one happily took her hand, looking up to her thoughtfully as she spoke. His ears twitched once or twice, and then he nodded his agreement. "'Kay. ABCs." He wasn't quite sure what ABC's where, but he assumed her decision to be a good one.

His mother had yet to teach him his letters and numbers, or else he probably would have started down the path of reading already. He was a quick boy- he learned fast. His mother was a first timer, though, so she was unsure when to start him on what.

Victoria lead them to the kids book section. A more fitting section for them anyways. She carefully read the signs so that she'd know where to go for what she needed.

She kept a firm but friendly grip on Jax. She didn't want the boy to get lost- more so than he probably already was. She smiled as she ran her free fingers across the spines of the books.

Her fingers landed on a brightly colored book labeled ABC's. "Here we go," she grinned. "You like?" She asked as she showed the book to Jax.

The kitten canted his head to one side, peering at the presented book curiously. He did like the areas where they used green.. He snuck a peek up at the girl's face, and then smiled brightly. He reached his free paw up and tapped it lightly on the ABC book. "Yeah! I wike it."

Now that they had the book secured, Jax temporarily took the lead. He gently tugged at the older girl's hand, ears perking up as he looked around.. Ahh. He attempted to lead her towards the small sitting area they had set up near the children's section. He had been looking for a table, but this was much better! They had an assortment of bean bags and chairs for children to sit in while they read. "We si' o'er here?" He questioned, a hint of pride in his voice. He had found a good place to read! He didn't sit right away, however, waiting for Tori to sit first.

Victoria smiled brightly. Jax's happiness made her happy. It was a strange feeling- to want to please someone else in order to make yourself happy. It wasn't about the end result in this case.

"Oh, what a lovely reading nook," Victoria said once she got a glimpse of where he'd led them. "You did a great job," she grinned.

Noticing that he was waiting for her to sit she held her dress as she sat down on one of the bean bag chairs. She folded her legs and fixed her dress. "Would you like to sit in my lap while we read?"

The little kitten boy beamed at her praise, releasing her hand so as to let her sit down comfortably. He took a moment to look around- he couldn't get over how quiet it was here. He did enjoy the change of pace, but it was still surprising. Usually his mom took him to loud places with lots of little ones running around.

Jax seemed delighted at her offer, and quickly nodded. "Yeah!" He was a very affectionate little creature, and quickly showed this by climbing carefully into the older girl's lap and snuggling into her happily. He even began a quiet, rumbling purr. He relaxed there then, looking down towards where she had the book. He was all ready for a good book time.

Victoria couldn't explain the feeling, but she was happy that Jax was trust her enough to curl up in her lap. She smiled as he settled and began to purr.

She opened the book to the first page. "A is for apple," she said as she took his small hand and used his finger to trace the letter. The page itself showed a rather large A with an apple sitting next to it.

The little one allowed the girl to manipulate his little paw digits over the letters, ears twitching thoughtfully. His expression had grown rather serious now, although he still continued to show his contentedness through his soft purring. "A is fo' app-uw." He mimicked her now, nodding immediately afterwards. He was the diligent student, and continued to parrot her after whatever she presented to him. He recognized these symbols rather quickly- he had seen them all over books and signs in the parks and stores.. It was like a whole new world opening up to the little tot.
