a while ago i had this happen.
About two hours after i had fallen asleep some thing came into my room i don't know what it was didn't seem to be a ghost or anything i had run across before it crept in through now i think the bathroom window it was the only window in the place that had no protection on it and went into the bedroom where me and my boyfriend slept. I felt the presence and suddenly i was out of my body which is what i do when something creeps in while I'm sleeping. So i was there astral projecting myself in the middle of my room and it was as if it was trying to cloak itself like it was hiding but i could see it like a shimmer in the dark and once it realized i could see it it showed itself. Its face was bone white and elongated and distorted it kinda reminded me of a forest spirit from princess Mononoke one of the little guys that make the clicking sound with gaping holes where its mouth and eyes should have been. It had almost no substance to the rest of it like it was gray smoke but it towered over me it was huge! i stood my ground and forced it out of the apartment and put a barrier up around the entire place it was crazy the place lit up like it was day light. Then something odd happened see this has happened before where something came into my room that was uninvited and i astral projected and forced it out and set up a barrier but i was satisfied with just that. This time it was not enough i went after the thing i ended up out front of a house in the middle of the night one porch light on and i pounced on the thing stabbing it in the heart.. area it wasn't enough just to force it out and make sure it wouldn't come back in. What ever this thing was i needed to kill it which isn't like me i couldn't even evict the ghost that kept giving me nightmares about my boyfriend cheating on me because she was there first and wasn't doing any real harm. But this thing offended me in such a way i felt it NEEDED to die. I think it may have been a manifestation sent by someone but I'm not sure i don't have any proof so i was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this or has any ideas of what this might be?
P.S i have already taken steps to make sure this wont happen again sage and dragons blood.

Well for one thing, don't go and watch Noroi, or you'll freak the ******** out.
The forest spirits from Princess Mononoke were kodama - as you said, they're nature spirits that dwell inside trees. I'm disinclined to say it /was/ a kodama, though, since it'd be odd for it to take the form of something from an anime you've seen when kodama have their own forms (although at a real stretch, you could say that the spirit wanted you to know what it was by taking a form you'd recognise).
Are you describing a totally different encounter in the second half of your post, and did it happen before or after the Kodama-esque one?
