Edit-> Made this a little more clear, I really don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers. So I am going to Sakuracon 2010 in Seattle, April 2, 3, and 4th. I plan on going to the Gaia Panel too, if anyone wants to meet up with me.
HOWEVER, I'm not sure about going to a lolita panel...
You see, all the lolita stuff I own is either thrift shop, hand made, replica, loli-ish stuff from regular fashion stores at the mall, and recently, an alarming amount of Bodyline. (It's cheap, I'm cheap. <3) I am worried that the Bodyline items will be the problem. Only a few people I know have made snide comments about my new bodyline purchases, but most don't seem to care (then again, most don't know what the heck lolita is anyway, they just think I'm in costume on the weekends) Will it probably be like that at a panel, most won't care, or will they look down on it? I'd prefer to receive new friends, not criticism.
Am I wrong for worrying about this? Will they be understanding that off brand is more practical for me? Should I try going and meeting new lolita? Or should I steer clear?
Sakuracon is an event for me, to let loose, be myself, have fun, and yes, even work a little (staff), and not a place where I want to be given a lesson, bashed, or insulted. I've done my research. Although I usually do more scene/punk/edgy ensembles or just cosplay for the hell of it, I can lolita right, and it's tasteful, classy and modest. I just don't have brand, and now own even more Bodyline.
I really don't want to go to a panel to have fun and meet people and hear "your lolita is wrong because it's not burando". That's you're opinion and you're opinion is wrong! *whew* I don't think anyone here actually feels that way, but unfortunately, I have had the experience of meeting people who do. :/
Anyone with any experience at lolita meet-ups and panels wearing mostly off brand, please speak up! Tell me what you experienced! I am really hoping to hear that most girls won't care, as long as I wear the clothes right. I'd really like to go and meet local lolitas, and hope that the sentiment against Bodyline is not going to prevent me from having a good time there.
EDIT-> Please no suggestions to save up and buy brand. I'm not ready yet, there are other things I want to save for first. Making/altering clothes and bodyline are hella cheap for me. I'm not buying any more brand until 1, I can try it on first, probably when I go to Japan (I measured, discovered that I won't fit most brand, don't feel like altering, already had to sell things that were too short on my long torso) and 2, I publish my graphic novel and buy a house, and some other stuff like a new fridge. Priorities, I has them.

轻言细语 孔明 The land is united at last....No, the land was always as one.... You should be good at SakuraCon with handmade stuff, depending on how Lolita it looks most people won't question it. As long as it doesn't look like Cosplay-grade Lolita you should be perfectly fine. Do you have any pics of an outfit you may wear to SakuraCon that's Lolita?
The way I look at it, have fun when you wear Lolita, if you feel like you look good then that will radiate from you and others will see you and think that you look good.

Anyone who would give you a hard time about a well-made handsewn dress wasn't worth your good opinion in the first place. Try not to worry about it, the worrying would only make things worse. The only thing you might want to consider if someone starts talking about your outfit is to figure out if they're offering advice or just giving you a hard time. ("I know this site that sells acceptable petticoats for only thirty-five dollars!" is advice, "You're doing it wrong." isn't.) If it's the latter, disregard them as best you can. I know that's easier said than done, but it rather needs to be said to be done.

I was thinking of wearing this: http://www.bodyline.co.jp/bodyline/showProduct.asp?id=3464&pageNumber=1&pageStop=stop_7&noSubType=NI took off the bad lace. It has two layers of lace, and one shined synthetic purple in natural light, so the lace had to go. The remaining lace is quite nice, and I'll replace the rest with some off white cotton lace. Also, I took off that neck ruffle thing and made a new one. http://www.bodyline.co.jp/bodyline/showProduct.asp?id=4248&pageNumber=1&pageStop=stop_2&noSubType=N(in black) which is surprisingly very nice, completely unaltered. SO SOFT and silky...o__o Quite poofy enough for me too, then again, I'm not a fan of super poof, doesn't look right on my frame. The bad lace at the ends is actually not that bad irl, so I'm leaving it on. http://www.bodyline.co.jp/bodyline/showProduct.asp?id=2820&pageNumber=1&pageStop=stop_13&noSubType=NThis after replacing the boning with capped boning, capped lace on the top edge in slightly off-white and slightly off-white velvet ribbon for the back, and matching slightly off-white bows with synthetic pearl detailing to replace the current bows. A new handmade crown, no pic yet, sorry, it's not done, but very much like this one except off white, sharper edges, a small porcelain bird in the middle instead of heart, and a little better since it's not my first one smile Bodyline bloomers, no one's gonna see them anyways. These shoes: Red and original synthetic pearl and velvet ribbon necklace (to match my now tomato-red yoko hair) sorry no pic yet, not finished, but a little like this one? Clasp close, no ribbon close. Pain the neck, stupid ribbon...:/ This hair style, again, sorry no pics of me: http://www.short-hair-style.com/images/short_curly_hair_top.jpgBlack stockings, and handmade pleather bunny purse/bag or handmade clutch with bird cage charm. Sorry gais, pics soon.

But I might also go with a thrift store skirt or blouse, depends on if I feel like I can pull off brown. See, my other stuff is mostly brown based, with blue, pink, purple, gold, bronze, and patterns to match brown, especially since I've been buying, soldering, and sewing like crazy ever since I discovered that steamloli is serious business. *serious face* O^O
HOWEVER, tomato red hair and BROWN don't look so good together on me. I'm waiting until after the convention, when my hair will finally be mint green, to wear most of them. The black takes the orange quality out of my hair, looks like a sharper red, looks nicer overall, which is why I might go with the mostly bodyline ensemble.
I can't change the hair color either cause it's gotta match my 4 ft long extensions for the cosplay the previous day. Joy. <3
Now, despite changing a thing or two to up the quality on these items, and throwing in hand made stuff and wingtip style heels from payless, I'm still going to be a cheeeeeeeeeap cheap bodyline lolita. SOMEONE is BOUND to recognize the blouse or skirt since I'm not changing them to look different, only to look nicer. Will that be a problem?

btw, the bodyline corset I got = love. I'm going to order from a place I saw spuntino mention, too, but for now, loving this one. Not worried about it though, no one is going to be looking at my underclothes. Just thought I'd mention that if there are any other cheepos out there who want a nice corset. I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. It looks nice, is comfortable *except for not being able to binge eat or breathe* AND functions well. *SQUEEEEEEEZE*
And where is yaoicon? I'm intrigued. biggrin

They're just jealous because they can't make their own clothes and aren't confident enough to wear off brand clothing and work it the way you do. :3 Shove all your Bodyline stuff down their throat and laugh because they had to pay up the butt to look as good as you do. lol

Also, if they say "Your lolita isn't good because it's not 'burando'" Ask them "Because it's not an energy drink?" lol People all taking it seriously like that. XD

*facepalm* gonk
I don't understand why people who don't own any brand are so afraid to interact with those who do.
I'm sorry dear, but get over it. People are people, and there will always be mean people who will make fun of your Bodyline wardrobe; but more often than not there are NICE people out there who don't care what brand you're wearing as long as you look nice!
Do I seem like an intimidating person just because of what's sitting in my wardrobe? I don't think so! I have a random assortment of brand, Bodyline, and stuff I've made myself.
I just wonder where this common fear among newbies has come from. neutral
Oh, and Ren-chan, How about you shove it up yours? There ARE people in this community who own brand, and I am one of them. Owning brand and spending the money on it is a personal preference. I can sew very well thank you, and my entire wardrobe was handmade and thrifted until I got a job (at 16) to save for lolita clothing.
Just because I own some brand doesn't make me jealous of anybody's "sewing skills", and frankly, I'm insulted by that sentiment. I've been sewing for 12 years, but I still chose to buy brand because you can't get the same prints or materials in stores. They're simply not comparable.
On top of that, there is something called an opportunity cost. Every hour I spend sewing instead of working, I lose $9. A dress I make myself and spend, say, 10hours working on will cost me $90 on top of the cost of materials which is usually about $60 for good quality materials. I would rather put my money toward something recognizable. So if you actually value your time, brand clothing may actually be cheaper when you consider alternatives and opportunity costs.

Let's not get hostile, now!
Don't worry about what people say- just do what makes you happy/comfortable. If they're bitches, call them out on it and they'll be embarrassed enough to shut up. And if people are nice, then you had nothing to worry about!
But yea, I don't think it's good to judge someone based on their ability to buy brand- if they can afford it, it's no one's business. If they can't, it's no one's business.
Cheers, ladies.

CATSUITS! Let's not get hostile, now! I'm not getting hostile, what I am getting is extremely fed up with irrational fear, flouncing, and extreme anti-elitism to the point of being more elitist than the opposing group. What I hate the most is the "THEYRE JUST JEALOUSSSSS!!!" argument. Sorry folks, that's not the case- but if you like to be deluded go right on ahead. And towards Ren, I was making simply making the point that she needs to be aware of what audience is present on any given message board. Saying "up yours" based on a wardrobe of all things is ridiculous especially when you don't know who you're talking to.

Okay, I think this thread got out of hand. Please, ladies, let's stop. I'm pretty sure Ren only meant that about the girls who would say something rude about my outfit (rude comments tend to stem from jealousy, or some other negative emotion), and not ladies who buy brand in general. At least that's how I understood it. I don't think anyone here thinks badly about anyone who buys brand just because they buy brand. That's ridiculous. I'm in this forum because I like lolita, brand included. I didn't mean for this thread to get anyone riled up. If it's a problem, please let me know, and I'll ask for it to be locked or something.
My worries are based on experience. There will always be mean people, in any fashion, anywhere. I'm an adult and I deal with them. I also know many brand lolita who really appreciate my thrift and handmade stuff and don't care that it's not big brand. If I thought brand lolita were stuck up or rude, I wouldn't be in this forum. The issue is the general sentiment towards Bodyline and the complete lack of brand. For example, ladies at work have said things that translate to, "it's cute but kind of a shame. Maybe she's poor." What I'm asking is if that sentiment has changed. If not, I'm not really interested in the panel. However, from the responses I've gotten here, it seems that it's not much to worry about, so I might give it a shot, but I would still like to hear from someone who has had experience at a panel either wearing, or with someone who was wearing Bodyline.
Also, I would like to clear up, because I really don't want it to be misinterpreted, my comment in the original post about priorities. I do not mean that buying brand means you're priorities are out of order. I mean that if I were to buy brand before I publish my novel and buy a house, then I would be going against my own, personal priorities. Key words here, Me, My, I. Nothing wrong with saving up and buying brand. If you worked and saved for it, you deserve what you want. I'm just saving for motorcycles and a house, is all, and I can't justify buying brand until I buy the things I consider more important to myself. Especially since I love having LOTS of clothes, and LOTS of brand would reeeeeally dent my spend-thrift funds.
