Verse padded through the pack lands with his eyes half closed in thought - he didn't really feel the need to pay to much attention, he'd grown to know these lands practically as well as well..his own paw! The brown teen had to chuckle at that thought a little bit, somewhat glad for the distraction.
He'd been trying for the longest time to come up with a new poem for Merrill, but for the life of him he just couldn't come up with a decent idea. He wanted to thank her for taking him in, for helping him grow into a fine strong teen and for being a great mother. But how exactly do you put that in words? It was a fairly complex concept and while poems rarely failed him -today they were and so Verse continued along his meandering path not really paying attention to where he was going.

Aleu was busy searching for Lyra, her lynx friend had gone off earlier in the morning to visit with her mother and she wanted to know if she was back or not. Humming a little tune as she weaved her way through the trees her eyes scanned the area for any sign of the purple lynx. Nothing. Well Aleu couldn't blame Lyra if she wanted to spend some time with her mother. Aleu did the same time whenever she got the chance.
Some movement up ahead caught her attention but she knew it wasn't Lyra. The movement had been too brown. Eye narrowed as she tried to get a better look at who it was. Finally spotting the somewhat familiar form up ahead as she rounded a tree. Ah, it was Verse. He had grown quite a bit since he came to the pack, no longer the scrawny little pup that she first met. What was he doing way out here? Surely he wasn't trying to patrol the border. Picking up the pace a bit Aleu headed off to see what he was up to, continuing on with her humming.

Verse was taken from his inner thought by the sound of light paw steps coming closer, pausing he turned to look in that direction nearly missing Aleu in the forest shadows - if it wasn't for the splash of white on her head and back why she'd nearly blend right in...which he reminded himself with a slight smile was nearly the exact same thought he'd had the first time he met her. And shortly after fought with her.
they'd both grown since then however and Verse liked to think he was beyond throwing insults and having spat with his packmates for silly little things like they had argued about. Poems however were still better then songs, a thought he wisely decided to keep to himself for now. "Aleu" He greeted the wolf with a slight bob of his head "Fancy seeing you all the way out here"

"Verse," She returned his greeting. "I could say the same about you." Well at least they were getting along better so far than the first time they met, she thought. Though if he made a comment about poems being better than songs she would teach him another lesson. She took a moment to glanced around before setting her eyes back on him. "So what are you doing out here?" They were too far from the border to be patrolling, plus that was a job for the older more experienced wolves, like herself.

What was she doing? checking up on him? Probably - making sure tin little verse wasn't doing anything dangerous or getting into trouble - he would have snorted at the thought had she not been standing right in front of him. They were nearly the same age - sure she was a bit older but not by much and he could do whatever she could. But better. "I was just doing some thinking" He lied in a nonchalant voice.
He wasn't sure why he didn't just tell her - after all if any wolf in the pack could help him come up with he right words it would be Aleu...if only she wasn't so superior acting all the time and he half expected Derecho to come charging out of the woods and knock him flat if he so much as breathed a word wrong about her.Still..he really did want to make a good poem for Merrill, she deserved it for putting up with him all this time and letting out a deep sigh he gave in. "Alright well thats not completely true - I'm trying to make a poem for Merrill, but I can't come up with anything good - she's been a good mum, I think she deserves a good poem..." He finished rather lamely in an attempt to explain.

Aleu raised a brow ever so slightly. There had to be more than that, he seriously couldn't be out here just to think. Couldn't he think back at the dens. No, there was more to this. So she stood there silently until he finally broke down and told her the truth. Or at least something that sounded more like the truth.
Fighting back a smile Aleu took a moment to make sure she wasn't going to laugh before speaking. "So this poem for Merrill. Have you started it yet?" Though it was quite obvious that she was actually curious about the poem and not trying to be insulting. "If you have can I hear it? Maybe saying it out loud can help you think of what you want to add to it." Lowering herself on her haunches she gave him as encouraging look as she could muster, she still though songs were much better than poems.

Verse scrutinized Aleu's smile for a few moments as though trying to see if she was being serious in her interest of just having him on for a bit of fun at his expense. She seemed sincere enough however and so Verse couldn't really see the harm of not telling her. "Well sort of..." He started "I'm still working on it..but this is what I got so far.." He told her, sitting down as well and clearing his throat as he prepared to recite his poem. His work in progress poem he might add...which he thought he'd made clear enough.
"When I was but a young pup, scared and all alone, When my world was lost uncaring and unknown, You came up form the shadows a voice so strong and soft You took me home.."
He paused sighing slightly "And thats where I'm stuck, i just can't think up anything that rhymes well with soft and make sense.." He concluded with a flick of his tail and his brow furrowed in concentration. "maybe I should change soft to another word.."

She sat quietly as he said the words of his poem. Well they were pretty good, though would obviously be better if they were sung. But she pushed that thought from her mind for the moment. This was her time to shine after all. To show him that she too could make things rhyme. That's what she did with her songs. Brow furrowed in thought. "A word that rhymes with soft. Loft? No, that probably wouldn't work. Coughed? No that's even worse." She said with a laugh.
Well honestly she couldn't think of any good words that rhymed with soft. Aleu couldn't help but smile as she spoke again. "Well unless you want to say 'You took me home where I coughed' I think you might want to pick a different word." Tail tapped against the ground as she thought a bit more. "Maybe instead of soft you could say kind or gentle?"

Verse half expected her to laugh at him, or make fun of hi poem - or at the very least tell him he should just make Merrill a song, which obviously he couldn't - his voice was quite dreadful when it came to singing. It sounded wonderful when reciting a poem though and thats the part that mattered to Verse. But Aleu surprised him - not only didn't she laugh but she actually tried to help and he mulled over her suggestions.
"Kind might work.." he allowed after a few moments of thought before trying the poem out again.
"When I was but a young pup, scared and all alone, When my world was lost uncaring and unknown, You came up form the shadows a voice so strong and kind You took me home and all the fears were left...behind"
He stated joyfully, rather pleased to have gotten over that particular slump in his poem, making poems always made him feel rather elated and his eyes were shining with that joy "Thanks Aleu!, now I just need to come up with the rest of it."

Closing her eyes as he said the poem once more she couldn't help but hum along with his words. It would make such a nice song, it was a real shame he didn't sing. Opening her eyes once more she smiled. "Glad I could help." Though she was a bit curious about what he would put for the rest of the poem. Humming once more to the beat of the poem, Aleu closed her eyes and after a few moments began to sing.
"There I met a little pup, I said hello and we started to fight, 'Cause I like poems and she likes songs, I should have stayed in my den until night."
A laugh stopped her from singing anymore and as she opened her eyes, she looked at Verse with a serious look. "You probably want to leave that part out."

Verse chuckled slightly at Aleus second verse, though even singing such a silly song she did have a pretty voice and she was a good singer. Not that you know he'd ever tell her. "Yeah I don't think she'd find the humor in it like we do - maybe that can be the secret second verse" He suggested after a few minutes of thought and a amused look.
"But now that you've helped me get past my slump, I'm sure I can come up with the rest of the poem" He said firmly, quite sure now of his ability to do so before tipping his head slightly "you never did say what you were doing out here"

"You're right, I don't think she would find the humor in it." Merrill was often quite a serious wolf, though she did have a sense of humor, it just wasn't often shown. But certainly admitting through a poem that the two had fought when they first met probably wasn't the best thing to put in the poem.
Her attention was brought back to reality as he spoke one more. "Oh, I was looking for Lyra. Have you seen her?" She had been so distracted by helping Verse with his poem that she nearly forgot about the reason she had come out here in the first place.

"Lyra?" Verse furrowed his brow in through for a few moments, he hadn't seen the purple Lynx in quite a while, normally she stuck pretty close to Aleus side, almost like a burr..but a nice one. He shook his head slightly "No I haven't, not in a while anyways.." And then thinking that Aleu might be worried for her she gave her an encouraging look "I'm sure she's fine though, Lynx are pretty good at taking care of themselves...I can help you look if you want" He offered helpfully, though he wasn't entirely sure why...Aleu and he lived in the same pack sure but they could hardly be called friends..could they?

"She's probably still with her mother." She told him though it was nice of him to offer to help look for her. Just like she had helped him with his poem. Looking off into the trees she thought for a moment. Verse wasn't half bad when she gave him a chance. He was talented, had a very good voice when telling one of his poems and - she returned her gaze to him once more and forced herself to stop her thoughts.
What was wrong with her? This was her enemy, he was a poet who hated songs and she lived to sing. But they could overlook that right? Damn it, there was that thought again. Aleu knew she had to get out of here and fast. She had to force herself to not just run off suddenly for fear he would follow her. "No, no, you stay here and work on your poem...uh I can find her myself." Turning she began to pad away, glancing back for a moment before dashing off into the trees.

Verse was a little surprised when Aleu suddenly decided to leave, he'd though they were getting along pretty well - but obviously he'd done something to annoy her. Watching her disappear into the forest he huffed a little "Girls...I'll never understand them" Shaking his head he turned about to continue on in the direction he had been going before Aleu found him. He had a poem to finish after all and he told himself that it was better that sh'd left, that way he wouldn't be distracted.
Not that he had minded..being distracted by her that was, maybe they could get along better then he thought...ugh, distractions! Thats all she was a big giant distraction and shaking his head he forced his mind back on the poem. For now at least.
