Alter's Guide to a Safer Account

The Rules of my thread!
Read them before posting!

1. Stay 100% on topic
2. I do not allow Tektek Post Formats in my thread(It clutters pages sometimes.)
3. If you have a question, please use my "I Have A Question" format.
4. Be respectful to EVERYONE in this thread.
5. If you are posting an image, please post a link to the image in your photobucket only. Do not use the Image tags, it sometimes stretches the page or causes longer load times.
6. Do not PM me with your question, please just post it.
7. Try not to quote, unless you are responding to someones question that is properly formatted.
8. DO NOT QUOTE ANY SECTION OF THE GUIDE.
9. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS Follow the Gaia ToS.

By posting in this thread you acknowledge that you have read and understand each of the above rules and will abide by them. If you do not then your posts will be deleted and if it is a recurring problem you will be asked to no longer post in here. I will operate on a 3 strike policy, depending on the severity of your offense. Notice that nowhere in my rules did I use the word "Please" so these are not optional.

Not everyone will need all of the information in this guide, keep in mind that there are some people who have very limited computer knowledge and might not know how to delete cookies and history.

In-depth Guide in the works.
Feel Free to poke around and look at the links
Any questions will be answered when I have a chance to answer them, or someone else handles it.
Any Suggestions are always helpful.

Getting this guide together is taking a good share of time and effort. I plan to have a lot of information/images/links for even the most inexperienced person to get some better protection.

Posted throughout this thread are images and links to various programs and add-ons. The various images posted of each program are to allow you as the user of this guide to get a look see, before you download anything. I will be posting information for each program with a brief explanation of what is shown in the image.

ANY AND ALL SOFTWARE/ADD-ONS PROVIDED VIA LINKS IN MY POSTS ARE 100% SAFE.
I USE NEARLY ALL OF THEM MYSELF, IF I DO NOT PERSONALLY USE THEM I WILL REMARK THAT IN THE POST

All software posted has a Free Version available

The pages on this guide will be changing throughout the day, possibly for a bit longer than that, until Version 1 of the guide is completed.

Gaia offers users the ability to customize their storefront, signatures, profiles, and you can add custom images and details to your posts. With that it opens up potential security threats. Some people either unknowingly use images from harmful sites or intentionally do it and when they do and the images load from these sites, sometimes you get an additional surprise. Without your knowledge the host sites for some of these images can and will attempt to infiltrate your computer and download malicious software. Keyloggers, Fake spyware, Hijackers, and more could easily placed on your computer using this method. Paid copies of Malwarebytes have a "Protection Module" which can and will block invading IP addresses. I have encountered several user profiles that have images that have sent some potential trouble my way. I advise you that if your profile is cluttered with pictures, make sure they come from your photobucket account, the last thing you want to be doing is infecting others with harmful programs that could in turn cause you to be banned.

Below is an image of an IP Address attempting to access my computer, this was an attempt was logged while visit another users profile. I was able to identify the image that was causing it and if you are a Firefox user with Adblock Plus, you can block the source website from displaying images which blocks the IP from contacting your computer.

Spybot Search & Destroy
Click to Download from Cnet.com

Most programs will require you to run as administrator to get the full functionality, keep that in mind when running scans on your system.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Ccleaner
Click to Download from Cnet.com

Most programs will require you to run as administrator to get the full functionality, keep that in mind when running scans on your system.

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware.

Browsers and Clearing Personal Data
The next few posts cover manual clearing of Cookies, History, and/or Temp Data saved by your browser
Images for Firefox, Chrome, and IE(Internet Explorer)

Images are below the text they coincide with.

Internet Explorer
Comes Standard on Windows PCs

To manually clear your private data on Internet Explorer(IE), you will do the following. Start by clicking the "Tools" option and scroll down to "Internet Options".

User Image

Once in the "Internet Options" menu, click "Delete" under the "Browsing History" sections. From there you have a few options to choose from. You do not have to clear everything, but I do recommend that you clear the following:

1. Temporary Internet Files
2. Cookies
3. History

Under the "Settings" menu you can customize how Internet Explorer, handles your history with a few options. You can adjust them if you would like, it is completely up to you.

User Image

Once you have done all of that you can slimply click "Close" and then "Ok" and resume normal browsing.

Google Chrome
Click to Download from Google.com

To manually clear your private data on Chrome, you will do the following. Start by clicking the Wrench icon in the top right corner of the browser window and scroll down to "Options".

User Image

From the "Basic" Tab click over to "Personal Stuff" and move your way down to and click "Clear Browsing Data"

User Image

With the "Clear Browsing Data" menu open, you are given a few options of what to delete from your system. I suggest that you clear the following data:

1. Browsing History
2. Download History
3. Empty the Cache
4. Cookies

You do not have to clear your saved form data or saved passwords if you do not want to. Once you have selected what you want to clear from your system, hit "Clear Browsing Data".

User Image

After you have finished, hit "Close" on both open menus and you can resume normal browsing.

Mozilla Firefox
Click to Download from Mozilla.com

Mozilla Firefox is by far my favorite Web Browser ever. It has a ton of customizable options and lots of different add-ons to do basically anything and everything. Below is a walk-through on how to clear your personal data manually and the next post contains links to various security related add-ons that I myself use.

To manually clear your private data on Firefox, you will do the following. Start by clicking "Tools" and scroll down to "Options...".

User Image

Once you are in the "Options" menu, click over to the "Privacy" tab where you will find the options to "clear your recent history" or "remove individual cookies". By default Firefox is set to "Remember History". What you will do is click on "clear your recent history" and a menu with a drop down will appear. Simply leave it set to "Everything" and click on "Clear Now". For clearing your cookies, click on "remove individual cookies" and then click on "remove all cookies" or you can delete them one by one with the "remove cookie" button. Once you are finished just click on "Closed" and then "Ok" to resume normal browsing.

On my setup I have changed my privacy settings to a custom setup. You can do this as well if you would like to, it is not a mandatory thing. As you can notice my buttons are a little different in this setup, but everything works generally the same, just slightly more advanced.

User Image

Alternatively to the previous two setups, you can set Firefox to "Never Remember History" and Firefox will not save any browsing history. You will however have to clear all previously stored data on your system.

Once you are finished clearing your private data, just hit "Close" and then "Ok" to resume normal browsing.

Firefox Add-ons
Click to Visit Add-ons via Mozilla.org

Add-ons are installable enhancements to the Mozilla Foundation's projects. Add-ons allow the user to add or augment application features, use themes to his or her liking, and handle new types of content.

Adblock Plus
Click to Visit Add-ons via Mozilla.org

Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page?
Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.

For a quick overview watch
Adblock Plus Video Overview
Via Youtube.com

Flashblock
Click to Visit Add-ons via Mozilla.org

Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading.
It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content.

NoScript
Click to Visit Add-ons via Mozilla.org

Winner of the "2006 PC World World Class Award", this tool provides extra protection to your Firefox.
It allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site, guarding your "trust boundaries" against cross-site scripting attacks (XSS) and Clickjacking attempts, thanks to its unique ClearClick technology.
Such a preemptive approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality...

KeyScrambler Personal
Click to Visit Add-ons via Mozilla.org

KeyScrambler Personal encrypts your keystrokes at the kernel driver level to protect your information from keyloggers.

KeyScrambler Personal
Click to Download from Cnet.com (Non-Firefox Users)

**I do not use the individual software. I use the Firefox Addon ONLY. This is for Non-Firefox users, but still protects Firefox as well.

Have Any Questions?

I you have a question about anything covered or not covered in this guide, use the following format so I can more easily find who has a question. If you do not use this format, I will overlook your question. Questions will be answered, as soon as I am able to answer them. If someone else would like to step up and answer a question for someone, please quote their post so I know which questions have been answered and the person who posted the question can see that they have a response.

Your individuality in this thread means nothing, so do not change anything in my format. That includes text color, sizes, alignments, or what have you.

Have Any Suggestions?

I you have a suggestion for anything to be added to this guide, use the following format so I can more easily find who has a suggestion and tell me why it should be added. If you do not use this format, I will overlook your suggestion.

Again your individuality in this thread means nothing, so do not change anything in my format. That includes text color, sizes, alignments, or what have you. The only part of the format that is to be changed is surrounded by and includes the "< >".

Suggestion: I think you should add this program/add-on to your guide, because blah blah blah.

Thank you for your time! heart
