Peace, quiet, tranquility; things so lost on Njeve from the presence of her rowdy sisters she almost lost sight of what those words truly meant. It was only now, in the small window of time she managed to carve out for herself away from them that she really understood why some craved it so.

Njeve stuck her snout into a hole she had found in her time alone, and inhaled deeply. It smelled of hares, but the scent was stale and fading, meaning the hares had long since passed from this spot, or had already been eaten by some other beast. Drats, she would have loved some practice in hunting.

Finally he had escaped the horrid overwhelming numbers of siblings to have some alone time. It was rare to have such a peaceful moment to himself, usually when he tried to get away at least one of his brothers would follow him. Not today, they had all been distracted by the latest meal their mother had brought home and that gave him the perfect opportunity to have some much needed quiet time.

Well at least as quiet as he could manage, there was that voice in his head that popped up every now and then. And the rocks, sometimes he spoke to them...or maybe they spoke to him, he wasn't sure anymore. Speaking of rocks, he suddenly bend his head down towards the ground, large ear hovering over a small rock. "Hello?" He whispered though no one was there to talk to him.

Down a little ways from the precarious little dog was Njeve. Her ears perked up from the hole her nose was currently buried in and twitched slightly. She had heard someone, and it did not sound like either of her siblings. Njeve slowly back up from the hole her nose was stuck into and stayed low to the ground. Until she was able to get a visual on who exactly it was that was near her there was no telling if it were something she could easily escape from if need be, or if it were something she was going to need to quickly hide from on short notice.

Njeve approached where the voice was coming from quietly, trying to implement the teachings of her mother for the importance of walking with soft paws. Quiet paws kept you from being spotted and potentially eaten, and Njeve was not about to become someone else's snack just yet.

When the brown and green pup had finally come into view, she felt her brow and ear raise at the strange sight. The pup in front of her looked as if he was listening to the rock, as if that were what he was talking to.

She broke the silence quickly, alerting the pup of her presence, "It's a rock."

Kuvu gasped in surprise as the rock spoke to him. No, wait it wasn't the rock at all. Lifting his head slightly still tilted to one side he looked towards the hyena pup. Where did she come from? He gave his head a shake, it didn't matter, at least it wasn't one of his siblings. A faint smile crossed his maw. "Yes, it is a rock." He glanced at the rock he had previously be trying to converse with. "But others are not."

Giving his head another shake he stood up straight once more. "Where did you come from?" Had she just appeared out of the air, or had the rock distracted him so easily that she was able to sneak up on him unnoticed. "Who are you?" Kuvu asked with a tilt of his head.

Njeve's ears went down as the pup spoke. How was a rock a rock, but not a rock at the same time? His brand of nonsense speaking wasn't quite like her sister's but it was still nonsense to Njeve's ears.

"Rocks are always rocks," She said quietly, pawing her way a little closer to the wild dog before her and plopping her behind on the dusty dirt mound they were standing on.

Njeve tilted her head right back at the male pup before her contemplating whether or not she wanted to answer his question. What would he do with information like that? Would he tell the rocks? Maybe they had ears...Now he was making her think nonsense. She shook her head quickly, "Tell me why you talk to rocks first."

Eyes narrowed in thought. How could she believe that rocks were always rocks? Wasn't it obvious to her that sometimes they weren't rocks at all? His head tilted to the other side at her question. Why talk to rocks? Hmm that was a good question. "Why do I talk to rocks?" He repeated the question more for his benefit than anything else. "Why not? Don't you talk to rocks?"

Kuvu gave his head another shake, as if somehow doing so would make everything clearer to him..or maybe to her. "It's better than talking to them." He said and motioned with his nose in the direction that his family lived, though they could not be seen from here. "There are too many of them. Far too many. They are always there. Rocks are quiet, I like the quiet."

Ahhh, was all that came to mind when the Wild Dog pup explained his desire to talk to rocks, and exactly why he was talking to them. Siblings, it always came back to that sort of thing. When there was a few it was a bother when personalities collided, but when there was numerous amounts, which Njeve figured from the pups reaction as he explained, it would possible drive people insane. Njeve was glad there was only three of them (including herself), it made escaping a little easier than if there were more.

"Quiet. I came for quiet," She said, an itch making itself known on her ear. She raised her back paw and scratched at it relentlessly until it quieted itself, even her own body wouldn't give her an ounce of peace.

"Rocks aren't for talking to," She said, shaking her head out of reflex like her mother did when she was finished scratching at something. "Njeve-Umhlabathi," She continued, pointing off in the opposite direction in which the pup had pointed, "I come from over there."

So she like's quiet too. That was good. "Did you find quiet? He asked her, though even as he spoke those words he felt that they didn't really make much sense. Oh well, too late now, he had already said them. Even if she hadn't found quiet it was at least quieter out here with just her around than it was at home with all those brothers and sister. The thought made him shudder a bit.

That's a funny name he thought and wasn't sure if he would be able to say the whole thing. "Njeve." He rolled the word around his tongue, at least the part of the word he wished to attempt. Lifting his paw he tapped his chest lightly. "I Kuvu. One of fourteen." He told her in an oddly proud way. Though having so many siblings bothered him, he was also proud to have such a large family.

"Mostly." Njeve replied, as Kuvu introduced himself. Her ears perked up when he mentioned to her that he was one of fourteen. Fourteen? She thought to herself, No wonder he talks to rocks.

"Insanity." She responded, "Two sisters are enough for me."

Njeve looked down to the rock in which Kuvu had his ear to and wiggled her nose slightly, getting up and walking towards it. She bent her ear towards the rock trying to see if she could hear something. After all, while the notion of rocks talking to you was craziness to her, it may very well be true. He may very well be on of those special people her mother mentioned who were blessed or cursed with odd abilities.

After a few moments of hearing nothing, she pulled her ear away from the rock and looked towards Kuvu, "How do the rocks talk to you?"

"Two would be nice. Two is small, nice and small." The idea of having just two sisters was a pleasant thought. Though it was somewhat hard for him to imagine. After all he was always surrounded by at least five or six different faces. When she bend her head down to listen to the rock he let out a small laugh. He really didn't expect her to ask him how to talk to rocks. It wasn't something that he could easily explain.

First thing he did was use his paw to flick away the rock she had just listened to. "Not that one. That one just rock. It don't talk." Then he lowered his head to the ground, listening carefully for any sign of a talking rock. Slowly he walked about until he found a rock that may talk to them. "This one." He told her as he lifted his head a bit.

"They don't always talk back. Some don't like to talk. Others don't stop talking." Motioning towards the rock with his nose. "You try. Talk and listen."

Njeve's head perked up as Kuvu flicked the rock away from her, a little warning would have been nice. She didn't want random potential talking rocks to be flung into her head and hold grudges against her, especially ones she couldn't hear about later down the line.

The little hyena watched as the little wild dog put his ear down once more against the ground. She would not tell her mother or her sisters of this peculiar happening, the last thing she wanted was to be labeled with craziness, even if hearing rocks talk worked. There were just some things a pup needed to keep to herself after all.

Njeve walked over to Kuvu and the rock he indicated would talk, or at the very least could talk. She bent her head low to the rock giving it a stern look, "Talk to me rock. Talk to me like you talk to him." Njeve bent her ear towards the rock, in hopes of hearing it talk back to her, even of the hopes were silly.

Kuvu watched with an amused look on his face as the hyena went over and talked to the rock. Oh man, she was just as crazy as he was. Letting out a small laugh before composing himself again. He wouldn't be surprised if the rock didn't speak to her though, he wouldn't if she had given him a stern look like that.

After waiting a few moments he took a step towards her. "Well did it say anything?" He asked curiously, though the smile on his face said otherwise. Maybe she would be better at talking with sticks. He spoke with sticks every now and then, but he had better luck with rocks. "Sticks talk too. If rocks don't talk then sticks might. Sticks are crazy."

Njeve's ears set back on her head and she turned to Kuvu with a displeased look on her face, "Nothing."

She picked up a paw and looked back towards the rock and swatted the rock down the way, giving it an angry yap afterwards. She should have known better than to trust something as silly sounding as this. She would definitely not be telling her mother or siblings about this.

"You are crazy. Sticks do not talk. Rocks do not talk. I don't like this game."

Kuvu felt sorry for the rock. Just because it didn't say anything to her just then didn't mean that she could treat it so badly. Perhaps it was just shy and needed a moment to think about its reply. His head tipped to the side as she called him crazy.

"I'm not crazy. You crazy, you don't hear them talk, but I do. It's no game, this real." He should have known better than to try to get others to see things the way he did. Even his siblings didn't believe him. Who needed them, as long as he had his rocks and sticks he would be happy.
