 Jianyu was not pleased with his hand.
Sitting at a small, wooden table off to one side of the Ichi-Koi Inn and Bar, Qian Jianyu was playing cards with a group of like-minded men. All had large mugs of ale in front of them (with the exception of Jianyu, who preferred to keep his mind clean and fresh with each new card game), and all were looking smugly over the tops of their hands.
"Six maids." said one, tossing down a handful of red cards. "I win this hand."
The snorting of disgust that came from the rest of the table was universal. Jianyu frowned, his dark eyebrows contracting together as he said "That's...not entirely true."
Silence. Then -
"What was that, kid? the burly man said.
Jianyu held up his cards.
"Black knight." he said. "I win."

Er... Jianyu thought to himself as the brawny man across the table from himself stood up slowly. That expression on his face does not look good.
"Are you...telling me...that you beat me in the game?" the man asked.
No. Not good at all.
"Well..." said Jianyu carefully, weighing his words almost uncertainly. "Yes. I am."
He supposed he could have said it more tactfully, or at least added an "I'm sorry" to the end of it, but really, what did he have to be sorry for? Jianyu had won, fair and square, and despite the blank stares he was getting from several of the nearby patrons, all he wanted to do was collect his winnings and leave.
There was a moment of silence as the man stared at him. Then -
"I'LL KILL YOU, YOU LITTLE LEGION RUNT!"

With a roar, the man lunged towards him. Jianyu hastily shoved his chair back, scrambling to his feet. Large, meaty hands swung towards him, but Jianyu was quicker, and he ducked down, scrabbling around on the floor. Crawling underneath one of the tables, he slipped under the chairs and the legs of those moving above him.
Damn, Jianyu thought, gritting his teeth as he heard yet another shout of anger from the man. How -
"Gotcha."
With a shout of surprise, Jianyu was hoisted up off of the ground, a strong hand clenching the back of his shirt. He was thrown backwards, and Jianyu's head cracked against the wall of the Inn. Grunting in pain, Jianyu staggered back upright, one hand holding his spinning head.

This was not good. This was really not good. Jianyu's head was spinning from the impact, and he had no idea where his bow and arrows had gotten to. The man standing in front of him let out a low growl of anger, and before he could react, large fingers closed around the front of his shirt.
"Damn Legion brat." the man snarled, and spun around, flinging Jianyu into a table. With a resounding crash, it snapped in two, collapsing onto the floor, and Jianyu's arm ricocheted off of the hard wood, sending bullets of pain reverberating up his arm and down his spine. He didn't even have time to gather his wits before he felt himself picked up and thrown sideways into yet another table. This one broke as easily as the first, and splinters of wood dug into Jianyu's skin.
Dazed and lightheaded, Jianyu put a hand to his forehead. His fingers came away stained with a dark red liquid, and Jianyu felt a wave of nausea slam into him.
"You..." he said, and his voice was shaky, unsteady. "Why..?"
The man stepped over to him, bending down low.
"It's because you're one of them." he hissed just before his fist connected with Jianyu's face and everything collapsed into darkness.

The first thing Jianyu noticed when he awoke was the splitting pain. It seared across his head an arms like a brushfire, and he sat up, wincing.
"Careful," said a familiar voice. "You'll open your wounds again."
Jianyu rubbed his forehead. It itched under the white bandages, and he said "I'll be fine, mother. It's not the first time I've lost a fight, is it? After all, it was just at - "
Damn it.
Qián Euhuang tilted her head, raising an eyebrow. A woman nearing her fifties, Euhuang looked remarkably young for her age, with long, straight black hair and crisp blue eyes that crinkled when she smiled.
Right now, however, her expression was not one of happiness.
"Jianyu." she said sternly, eying him suspiciously. "Would this fight happen to have occurred somewhere close by? Somewhere, perhaps...near the Ichi-Koi Inn and Bar..?"
His silence was too obvious.
Jianyu spent the rest of the night listening to his mother yell at him.
Ah, family.
