Jadamirei had spent most of her day in the kitchens, following her 'cover story' of being from High Reaches. Really, that M'dor was too golden-tongued for his own good. Her now-short black curls bounced around her shoulders, pinned back up in a ponytail.
And then a growing-familiar voice broke in from outside the kitchens. Jadamirei, I itch. Come scratch me. Kitchen workers rolled their eyes at her; this was not the first time Gemi had called her out today.
I'm working. You're calling me out every 15 minutes, and keeping me for 30 more!
Are they more important than your Geminith? The mind-voice was sad, and the scowls on the faces of her coworkers deepened again. Geminith really needed to stop broadcasting to everyone within range.
I'm on my way! Alright! She set down the pie, moved for the sink.
Yay! Thank you!
Sighing, the young rider picked up the oil that had been provided to her to care for the Hatchling; Geminith sure was going through a lot of it though. And it wasn't even that Gemi wanted to be shiny (she'd rather roll in the hot sands outside, getting it stuck all over her clean hide), it was just that she itched so often! She moved outside, almost tripping over the dragonet that attempted to wind around her ankles in satisfaction. "So where do you want to go get scratched this time?"
Geminith had a thing for 'exotic locations' and never wanted the same view twice in a row when she was being scratched. I want to go watch the big dragons. They are all so big. Do you know some of them aren't from here, like you. What is it like, where you come from. Is it really that different?
"I'll tell you some stories about it tonight." she promised. She still hadn't come clean to anyone that she wasn't, in fact, from the place everyone assumed her to be from. She also hadn't taken it upon herself to disillusion anyone. She'd just avoided those dubbed 'outsiders' and kept hoping that Faranth willing she wouldn't get caught and stoned or something.
Why are you worried? Geminith's eyes whirled up at Hers.
"Nothing, dear one."

Amelia was out with Sharath this day, having requested the whole day to practice with her dragon. Flying and going Between had only roughly been taught to them before they'd been sent here and so the whole group was still rough around the edges. And Sharath would not let that be another snag for the Ghenza people to complain about. She was just as good at flying as any of theirs!
And so Amelia had been given the day because she was a dragonrider as she was nearing that stage where she would officially graduate Weyrlinghood and become a Junior Weyrwoman. It was something both Amelia and Sharath were excited for - even if such a thing would not be official and would not really even be celebrated here at Ghenza. They held no power in the foreign place, but that did not mean they could not practice and try to prepare for such roles.
Not that Sharath thought she needed to practice the skill of being Queen. That would happen in due time, as she had always believed. The practice now was just to show she was as capable, if not more capable, then anyone the Ghenzan riders could present. Amelia knew, too, that Sharath had been spurred on by the news of the disastrous Hatching. Four gone between and one dud... four Impressed to those of her own Weyr, including the new young Queen, and a death and several wounded. It sounded brutal.
Sharath was up above, then, wheeling circles tighter and tighter, pushing her agility and flexibility as far as she could manage. The result was some rather interesting turns and dives that Amelia was pretty sure a larger gold wouldn't be able to duplicate - Sharath was small, yes, but that meant she flew like a smaller dragon and less like, well, a gold.
"That was good! Try spiralling and then going Between to the far side of the field!" Amelia called out, smiling as Sharath coasted low to the ground, against testing her abilities. The queen nodded and arched away, gaining the height to perform the task Amelia had set her. The goldrider was always amazed by dragons in flight and watching hers in particular gave her a rush of pride every time.

Look! Geminith's wings flopped at her sides as she hopped once, dancing around in a circle. I will be able to fly one day, just like this, right? She wasn't graceful; parts of her body were too long and too short, but she was well-proportioned, and respectable in general size.
"I think it takes a little more than hopping and skipping." Jada said dryly, reaching down to stroke the young dragon's beautiful head. "There's no rush. It's not like they are going to be calling on you to fly Thread any time soon."
Thread! Geminith's mind-voice rose, and a few Ghenzans looked at her from the edges of the field.
"Oh hush." her eyes caught on a flash of color against the sky, and she pointed up. "Look, Geminith." she murmured. "It's the High Reaches Gold."
She flies well. The warm voice was wistful. Someday will I be able to do that?
"No idea." Jadamirei said cheerfully, and plopped down in the dirt, taking a seat. Geminith pranced closer to her, dropping her heavy body down directly onto Jadamirei's lap, crushing her. The oil dropped, Jada felt the wind knocked out of her.
You are comfy.
"You are... heavy." Jada managed to get out, shoving. "You aren't allowed to lay on me." She heard the slightest grumble as Gemi moved, laying on one side to watch the other gold with eyes swirling a placid green and blue. Hands slid over the patterned hide, scratching and rubbing oil over her.
"That was good! Try spiralling and then going Between to the far side of the field!" a voice came faintly to their ears from somewhere else, carried on the wind.
She's coming over here! Geminith crowed, loudly. Shoved to her feet and pushed up onto her hind legs, trying to balance on her tail again. As though her standing would make it easier to see what the bigger dragon was about to do!

When Sharath had reached the peak of her spiral, she vanished the blink of an eye and a few heartbeats later reappeared at the very end of the field, just above where Jadamirei and her knew lifemate were speaking.
Normally not one to pay attention to the goings-ons of the Ghenzan people, Sharath blinked when she spotted the new queen. Immediately she narrowed her eyes and swept closer, getting a better view of the dragonet. Mine, the new Queen is here.
Mnn? Amelia replied almost instantly, heading off as soon as she heard Sharath's comment. Yeah? They say she Impressed to an Outsider too. Is Hers there?
Yes. She is a pretty woman. But you are better. Sharath spoke plainly, her pride and love of Hers flooding Amelia's senses and the rider knew the silly gold saw even the new arrival as a rival. It entertained and worried the goldrider - why couldn't Sharath get along with all dragons? She sighed. It was just one of the quirks of her beloved lifemate. She's standing up...?
Amelia chuckled at that, Sharath seemed unfazed by the hatchling's apparent interest. Just greet her, then? Don't have to talk to her. By that time, she'd made it to where Sharath was hovering and gestured for the queen to land.
The gold chose not to and remained where she was, probably demonstrating her ability to remain aloft and stationary. It was silly, as far as Amelia was concerned, but Sharath's muscles were developed enough that if she wore herself out she'd have no one to blame but herself.
What is your name? The gold asked by way of greeting, finally choosing to land once Amelia had passed in front of her and had waved to Jada. The whoosh as she'd landed had drawn Amelia's attention, causing her to turn back to her dragon with a questioning gaze.

Did you see that? Geminith was almost bugling her appreciation of the older dragon's flying. She spent a lot of time watching the dragons fly- Jadamirei was subject to an influx of appreciation of every dragon in the skies. This was the first time she'd been up close and personal to watch Gemi almost falling over herself in delight.
So this was the High Reaches Junior Gold? She was pretty. "I saw, Geminith. Now sit down, or I won't be able to oil you." she chastised her partner gently. Why was the older dragon hovering there? The answer came in the form of a pretty, dark-haired woman approaching them.
When Amelia waved, Geminith bugled a greeting, followed by a happy Hello! Jadamirei waved as well. And then Sharath spoke to the dragonet, and Jadamirei almost spun as she felt the smaller gold's pleasure. I am Geminith, and this is my Jadamirei. You are Sharath, right? And your girl is... your girl is... Who was her girl? Oh, this was embarrassing!
"Amelia, right?" Jadamirei ran her hand over the dragonet's head, trying to send her thoughts of calming down. Geminith was as effervescent as Jadamirei herself could be. She'd never realized what a drain bubbly could be in some situations.
Amelia! Jadamirei, you have such a good memory. Is she right, Sharath? the question was nervous. Was hers right? Oh, of course she was, but... She dropped back down to all fours, almost prancing over to Sharath as the older dragon landed.
The dragonet was very careful not to bump into Amelia as she flailed past her at a galloping run, and she tried to skid to a halt before she would bump into the other dragon. "Do you want to get oiled or not?" Jadamirei couldn't sound exasperated with the waves of happiness Geminith was sharing, but she made a valiant effort.

Sharath merely whuffled at her rider and fondly nosed the woman before lifting her head to regard the dragonet - only to find the little one come galloping over. The older queen shifted her feet and backed up some, not intent on having the dragonet attach herself to a forelimb, Mine is Amelia yes. The pride and love in Sharath's voice was unmistakeable and it made Amelia grin with an echoing pride as she waved to Geminith as well.
"Ah, yeah. Amelia. How'd you know?" Amelia blinked, surprised Jadamirei knew her name - she'd never seen the other woman before. "Good to meet you. Ah, oil issues? She's itching already?" The goldrider's tone was empathetic, knowing all too well how much work it was to keep up with a growing gold - though Sharath hadn't really gotten any bigger in recent months so Amelia figured she'd peaked in size.
Sharath lowered her head again as she inspected the little queen, She is too friendly. Such a bubbly personality... it will not get her far. She spoke to Amelia privately, giving her thoughts on the other dragon with a tone of disaproval.
Not everyone needs to be as ambitious as you to succeed, Sharath. Amelia replied tartly, annoyed. Geminith was simply new and curious... she seemed easier to handle then Sharath had been at a young age.
The gold huffed at that, shaking her head as she turned her gaze to Jadamirei, What can she do? She does not look as strong as you, Mine. You are better.
I said stop it. Nit pick later, Sharath. A frown settled into Amelia's features then, and she hip checked the gold. Long gone were the days of physically wrestling the dragon. A firm hand and voice was all that reigned in Sharath. Okay?
Hrmph. Fine. The gold shrugged then, settling down into a more comfortable sitting position, speaking to Geminith then, You are the new gold, why are you so informal? It was fairly obvious Sharath had no idea what to speak about to the other dragon.

Geminith gave Amelia a little wobble of her head in greeting, moving around the other gold in a circle. You are pretty. And big. Big was a good compliment.
"I listen." Jada said, and gave a wry grin. Maybe she should have pretended not to know. But even in Telgar they'd heard a bit about Sharath and Hers. "I'm Jadamirei." she held out the hand that was not full of the oil jar. "And yep, the itching started the day she hatched, and hasn't stopped. I'm not sure how much of it is genuine and how much of it is Geminith wanting attention."
When Sharath asked her question, Geminith looked at her, tilting her head to the side. Why should I be formal just because I'm gold? I'm a girl, just like a green! Only, I'm bigger. If Geminith could frown, she would have, but her face seemed stuck in a puppy-dog expression.
Jada bit her lip, moving closer to the junior weyrwoman and her queen. "Come here, you. Where are you itching now?" it was clear that one way or another, she was getting this job done, no matter who was in company.
My belly. Geminith said, attention going to Hers. Jada's soft hands dipped into the oil. Her palms were growing tired of being used on the dragon skin. The callouses that she'd avoided with her leather gloves as a Candidate were useless in the kitchen, so all the callouses were fresh.

Sharath nodded at the compliment, Thank-you.
Amelia nodded at that explanation, figuring as much, "Seems like there's a lot to listen to here or at home." A soft chuckle followed as she shook the other's hand, grip strong and firm and calloused. Her hands were those of a worker then a 'lady', especially with her efforts in mine and field both. "Wait until she actually starts to grow... I could barely keep up with Sharath. It's hard to believe that only about a Turn ago she was the size of your little one. Now she's a great big Queen and I can't wrestle her anymore. Or least, not do so and win." A wry grin settled on her lips then as Sharath nudged her with a forelimb in likewise amusement.
However, at Geminith's response Sharath blinked. Because you are Gold? You are not a green and will never be one... our purpose, and duty, is to lead. Do you not desire that? She sounded rather confused at the concept - did this one not have aspirations?
Or more like different aspirations, Sharath. What did she say? Amelia intoned, catching the gist of the gold's confusion through their link.
That she should not act accordingly despite being a gold. That she's just like a green. She remarked, disapprovingly.
Oh. Huh. I don't know then. Definitely different then you. Her response also carried a touch of confusion. Most golds she knew of were well aware of their status... it didn't sound like this one was if she considered herself akin to a green. "Make sure you get where the wing joins the shoulder. And where the wing membrane joins the side... that often bothered Sharath." She suggested in an attempt to be helpful.

"Gossip is everywhere." Jada said simply, laughing wryly. "I can't imagine how fast she's going to grow." Jada looked Sharath over, mind boggling. The difference in size was that much in almost a year? "I bet you had to go through a lot of oil." Jada sounded glum.
Geminith's mindvoice was a broadcast; she didn't bother to keep anything private. Anything she said to her rider, she would tell anyone else. I know I'm not a green. Geminith sounded amused, mildly discomfited. And I suppose being a leader would be interesting. There are plenty of other dragons who are just as smart as me, or maybe smarter! Like Dith. He's smart, I'm sure His is just as smart. Aren't leaders supposed to be smart? Leaders were supposed to be smart; Geminith's was smart. And pretty. But Geminith was confused. She knew she was going to be expected to do things when she got older. Every dragon was. Why do I need to be who I am not because I am gold?
Jadamirei looked up at Amelia, giving a faint smile. "Thank you. I'll remember that." She stroked the oil up Geminith's side until the golden hide was gleaming. The dragonet rubbed her bog head against Hers, eyes whirling. Was she supposed to act differently?
Am I doing it all wrong, Jadamirei? I don't want to do something wrong.
You are doing it just fine, Geminith. Jadamirei reassured her companion soundlessly.

"More then I care to remember." Amelia replied with fond amusement. "At least it's good for the skin." The goldrider shrugged, considering it just part of the daily routine. It had been hard at first but daily chores had allowed her to settle into the rhythm relatively well.
"They say you're from High Reaches, I can't imagine that the Ghenzans are too happy with your Impressing their new gold... Are you being treated alright?" Amelia asked even though she recignized neither the name nor face of Jada - but she'd never been a Candidate so she wasn't familiar with the whole pool. It was important the people of high reaches were treated decently in her opinion, and the fact that several of the dragonets that had survived had Impressed to High Reaches individuals was a reflection of the need for variation in the Candidates presented. Losing four to Between was horrible but apparently normal here. "Luci's a fairly good teacher, I learned a lot from her before we came here. Hopefully you'll do well too, under Sojayeth's rider. If you have questions, I'm willing to answer as best I can - I've learned a thing or two in the past Turn."
Sharath saw the young queen as a curiosity because of her answer, Ah, yes. A leader must be intelligent. Are you saying you're not interested in leading? Perhaps you are too young yet, Geminith. The tossed her head then, whuffing with a shrug of her shoulders as she turned her gaze to Amelia and spoke privately, passing judgement on the dragonet, She has no ambition Mine.
Amelia smiled at that, patting the older queen's arm, You have enough ambition for everyone. They're probably staying here so you don't need to worry, Mine. No dragonet straying underfoot.

The young rider laughed, patting her oiled hands over Geminith's soft belly. "I will rest assured that while I am trying to clean pots and pans, my skin will remain soft." her voice was dry. "I'm being treated as well as could be expected. They might not be happy with an Outsider Impressing Geminith, but she is still theirs." She smiled.
I am! And they will warm up to you. Optimism. An endearing trait. One that Jada had been losing with age.
"They'll need to." Jada bent down, pressed a kiss to the top of the dragonets head. "I'd appreciate any advice you could give me, frankly. I learned the basics of taking care of a dragon, but I'm not sure of any... special needs." A dragon was a dragon, at the core, right? Aside from size and gender, were there any major differences? "I haven't met Sojayeth's rider yet." Weyrwoman Nalina. Jadamirei was a little intimidated at the thought of facing the older woman. A lot intimidated.
I don't have any special needs. Geminith's tail knocked into Jadamirei, almost knocking Hers off her feet. Do I? Do I have special needs Sharath? And it isn't that I'm not interested in leading, but how do I know that I'll be the best dragon for the job? the dragonet seemed like this was an Important Question.

Amelia smiled at that, "I hope they have the sense to realize that as well. As for as advice... I don't know. Be ready to be everybody's scapegoat? I found that was the case with being a goldrider - much like being an excavator. Everybody looks up to you, as soon as something bad happens, it's clearly your doing. Or you had a hand in it and could have done something but failed to do so. Basically, expect a lot of criticism." She shrugged, "Of course, I don't know if that'll be the case for you. Their golds are... well, I want to say broken in like a runnerbeast as far as I'm concerned. Sharath's no workerbeast." The disdain in her voice was clear - she did not like hearing that golds were all but muzzled in their day to day life. Sharath would have withered under such harsh conditions...
She smoothed a hand over her gold's leg then, sighing as she glanced up. "I'm grateful for Mine. And for where we live, especially after this detour. I really do hope you prosper. I don't think I'd do so well here if we had to stay."
Sharath rumbled at that, tossing her head in a very equine manner. Yes. You will grow a lot. And must learn your place and others' places. What Mine says is true - Yours and you will be criticized. Be strong. You know because you're Gold and that's our role, our place. She shrugged her great shoulders, wondering why it was such a difficult question - that golds lead was how it was. How it was meant to be. And she, Sharath, would one day have her own Weyr and prove she was just as capable, if not more capable, then every other gold out there.
Including this one. She turned her gaze to Amelia and spoke privately, She is too timid and unsure. No one will respect that. It was her usual snide remarks about other golds, again, that only made Amelia's lips twitch in a slight frown. Getting Sharath to stop gossiping like that was... well, it was impossible. She saw every other gold as competition and threat, even Dorath... but as long as the comments were private, Amelia had decided to bear them. And Sharath was right in that observation. Too soft and you'd not be a good leader. Too hard, and the same.
It was a balance they too were still working out.

Be ready to be a scapegoat? Great. Geminith glanced back at Jadamirei as she felt a wave of mingled emotions from her rider. The large eyes whirled with color and she placed one foreleg on Hers. "I think I could handle some criticism, so long as it is fair." Would it be? Could she handle it? The dark-haired rider rubbed her hands over the joint Amelia had mentioned earlier, rubbing the oil into the hide. To be frank, everything about this was making her so nervous it was almost nauseating. And when everything came out? If it came out? What kind of repercussions from the favor she had done for M'dor? If Ghenza kicked them out, would Telgar take them in? The expectations Amelia spoke of seemed so against Geminith's innocent nature that it would almost be worse to emotionally break her than to have her suffer through the physical labor of a Ghenzan 'workerbeast.' Would it?
If Jadamirei's eyes were like a dragons, her emotions would be whirling. As it was, they were whirling through Geminith's, confusing the small gold. I don't want to be a workerbeast. Geminith glanced back at Jada. And I will work very hard at learning what I must. The concepts that the older gold was introducing were slightly confusing to her, but she would remember. Or try to.
"I'm sure things aren't all that bad." Jada rubbed the oil over Geminith's eye ridges, trying to reassure the gold. She could feel the whirling feelings. "We can go ask to talk to the Weyrwoman, if you would like, Geminith." she offered the idea to the golden dragonet. "And I can talk to Nalina while you speak to Sojayeth."
I would like that. Geminith responded privately. I don't really know what I would talk about, though.
Jadamirei smiled. "I think we'll figure something out, Amelia." she said finally, pulling her eyes back up to the older woman. "I'm sure you and Sharath will do wonderfully in the future. Are you excited about the prospect of returning home?"
Home. Harper Hall. Telgar Weyr. Places that she may never get to see again. Terror bubbled up in Jada's throat and she shoved it down when Geminith's yellow eyes turned to her and the dragonet moved over, closer, crooning at her rider's feelings.

"Some's fair, you just have to learn to take everything with a grain of salt, I think. Then again... Geminith seems much different from Sharath so it may turn out differently." She, and those around her, knew how difficult Sharath could be... and Amelia in turn, if people pushed her too far. Amelia herself was hardly perfect, moreso now that Sharath had rubbed off on her, she realized.
That was a good thing, and a bad, she supposed, glancing up at Sharath and smiling when the gold caught her thoughts and lowered her great head to nose at her rider with a fond whuffle. Indeed, the only ones they need ever really work about were each other. They were never alone and that was infinitely reassuring.
"I've been told Nalina's... ah, intimidating. Not even Sharath wants to pick a fight with Sojayeth." Amelia chuckled, "She'll probably be more welcoming to you though, since Geminith is Ghenzan born."
Sharath seemed amused that their bias, and she was well aware it as a bias, had unsettled the younger gold. She had no idea just what it was like - had no interest, thank-you - but Amelia and she were of like mind in this: Ghenza broke their queens. It rubbed the gold entirely the wrong way. If Geminith managed to survive that in tact... well, maybe she'd actually respect her more. Hm.
"I am. I home we return home soon. I miss the mountain air and crisp mornings... and the tunnels and friends and family. I hope the plague scare is over by now... we haven't heard too much." She frowned, sorrow creeping into her voice "I hope Luci is alright. D'astel didn't make it... I liked him. Still, it'll be good to see familiar faces."
Sharath rumbled, her eyes whirling with a similar sorrow - the echo of Amelia's own grief. The announcement had been a shock but the gold, selfishly, was grateful to be away where Hers was safe.

"May I ask you a favor, Amelia?" Jada looked up at the older woman, biting her lip. "I don't know if I'll ever get to go back. If Ghenza goes back to isolation after everyone goes back to High Reaches, I may never got to say those last goodbyes to my family. When I came here, that wasn't something I planned. Probably should have, but..." she shrugged. "I thought I'd get to go home."
The dark-haired woman rubbed her hand over Geminith's shoulder as the dragonet crooned at her. "So if you don't mind, I'd like to ask you to take a few letters with you when you leave, for my family and some friends. I know you have better things to do than be a runner, but I would really appreciate it."
Jadamirei... Geminith rubbed her rough nose along Jada's arm.
"But you are right." she looked happier, like a switch had been flicked. "Hopefully they will all remember that Geminith is one of theirs."
And so are you. Geminith went rigid. You are mine, and as mine, you are theirs! They will understand. They will come to understand. We will make them, together. Is this not right, Sharath? Was yours one of High Reaches when you chose her? She looked anxious, multifaceted eyes almost pleading for Sharath to say no.
Jada smiled, resting her cheek on the golden head. "I'm sorry, Geminith and I are probably keeping you and Sharath from your duties." she soothed Geminith as best the could, rubbing her carefully. "And I think I am almost done rubbing you down, young lady, which means I need to get back to mine."
