It was the evening after the hatching, just about dinner time. While Shen always ate at home with his family, Sh'en found himself entering the public dining hall with Bajenth at his side. It wasn't that his father had said anything. Well. That was the point. He hadn't said anything. He'd taken one look at the dragon at Sh'en's side, shaken his head and walked out of the room. Sh'en's mother was full of reassurances that it would take time, that his father only needed to get used to the idea. But the fact of the matter was that Sh'en had always failed his father and now he was making it worse. Leaving the family trade, entering one that made the possibility of children almost non-existent. No family, no life, in the sense he'd been meant to have.

Usually, Sh'en just bowed his head and accepted the weight of disappointment. But with love of Bajenth buzzing bright and irrefutable in his head, it'd done more than sting. It'd made him angry. And Sh'en didn't do angry. So, he was eating in the public hall. It was better than simmering at home.

It was strange though. Everything was strange. Even Bajenth, who already felt like everything Sh'en had ever needed, was strange.

He is a fool. He doesn't understand you. He thinks you are a failure. I do not think so. I understand you. I love you. I will never reject you.

And it felt so true.

B’hec wasn’t exactly sure what to make of this whole ‘Impressing’ business. Oh, yes, it had certainly been wonderful. Rayth was wonderful; he adored the little blue dragon like he’d known Rayth since the day he was born. Well, he had, actually. Known Rayth since he was born, that is, but what B’hec really meant was from the day he himself was born. Belhec. To his baker parents and, oh. Nevermind.

Mine, stop thinking so hard, Rayth complained, one blue eye cracked open. You make my head hurt and I just want to sleeeeep.

“Oh,” B’hec replied, eyebrows furrowing. “Sorry.”

The baker still hadn’t gotten a handle on the mental speech business. It was more complicated than it looked (didn’t look?) and required some practice. In the meantime, B’hec stood to look like an epic fool, muttering quietly to himself while he pushed his honey-brown hair out of his face with near neurotic frequency. He certainly didn’t need any help in that department, but now he was just that much more of a hazard in the kitchen, constantly jumping at the soft jingling in his head, coming in late after caring for the blue. Oh, and he thought Impression was going to make his life easier. How very wrong he was…

…sorry, came the sheepish mutter, but I don’t think I can unImpress you…

“Oh, what? No! No no no, Rayth, that’s not what I meant!” But the blue had already settled back down, tucked into the corner of the kitchen near Jalisk. It was perhaps not the wisest place to store a baby dragon, B’hec thought, but there wasn’t a lot of choice. As long as Rayth kept from underfoot (and in truth, he did a better job staying out of the staff’s way than his rider did), he was allowed to stay there quietly until he wanted to be fed.

Speaking of being fed.

Snatching a freshly cleaned plate, B’hec helped himself to the fresh breadrolls, stealing a few meatrolls as well before trotting out to the dining hall. He had to eat too! It would just be a quick break and-

“Oh! Sh’en! I don’t think I ever got to congratulate on your Impression!”

Well at least someone wanted to congratulate him, whispered the sharpest, coldest corner of his mind. At least someone wasn't expecting him to fail at this the way he always failed. The bitterness was surprising and brief, washed away by a wave of affection and warmth from Bajenth.

Because Bajenth really did love him. Loved him with a ferocity that demanded domination. It was something that neither the bronze nor his rider understood and probably never would. Better that way.

"B'hec. I'm so glad you Impressed. Please, join me. How is-" he stopped, searching for the dragons name. He knew Bajenth had mentioned it to him.

He is called Rayth. And then, directly to the blue, who was so tragically absent. Rayth, I and Mine are with Yours. Please come join us. I miss you.

"Rayth." Sh'en finished, rather late. "How are you, umm, settling? It's weird, isn't it? And I just... I can barely haul stone and now--" he gestured helplessly to Bajenth, "I don't know if I can do this."

So long as I am with you, you will be fine.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 13, 2010 11:16 am

"Rayth is well," B'hec replied cheerfully, settling next to Sh'en before digging into his meal. "He's sleeping. In the kitchen. It's not really a good place for a dragon, even if he is little." Truth be told, it wasn't a good place for this dragonrider, either, but he only had to put up with it for so long before Rayth freed him from the fires of hell.

The newly-made rider frowned when he felt the blue in question began to stir, Rayth's mind stretching and meeting with his own with some vague alarm.

I'm coming, the freckled blue was muttering sleepily, clearly not impressed by his awakening. Still, as the bronze beckoned him forth, Rayth came forth, skittering around the busy kitchen staff as he was almost stompled to death by foolish women. He made it out to the hall without injury, but only barely. Curling by B'hec's seat, Rayth began to whine to anyone willing to lend an ear.

They didn't see me! he cried, small little body trembling as he glanced up at the pair of riders, trying to avoid the scary bronze when at all possible. Bronzes were bronze, and he was a blue, and. Well. How could he expect to be noticed? Someone stepped on my tail!

If Rayth wanted someone to whine to, he couldn't have found an audience more willing to listen then Bajenth, though the dragon seemed completely unaware, or at least unwilling to acknowledge, the smaller dragons nervousness around him. He projected the offended protector well, sitting up from his lounging position his eyes picking up a touch of irritated yellow as he looked back toward where the blue had come from.

They need to be careful of you. He growled as he spoke, a low disapproving rumble, his tail lashing. He stood then, in one sharp motion, looking ready to stride over to the kitchen. I will tell them. And then, a pause, as he remembered how little Rayth had reacted to his earlier conversation with B'hec. Very gently he added, Do you want me to speak with them?

Picking up the edges of his dragon's conversation, the leaking between their minds strong with the newness, Sh'en placed his hand firmly on the dragons neck, trying to discourage him from storming off. But if he wanted too, well, Sh'en wasn't going to ask him to stop. Bajenth knew what he was doing. Knew better than Sh'en ever had. "He umm, I think he really likes Rayth." A fond smile now, the newness of the bond still powerful. It didn't last long, as the comment about the kitchens reminded him of his own earlier encounter. "Is your family... proud of you? Do they like him?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 14, 2010 5:54 pm

B'hec frowned as Rayth began his whimpering, torn between yelling at the sorry sort who stepped on young dragons and scolding his dragon for getting underfoot of kitchen workers. Ultimately, the staff had made no friend of him and the bluerider was inclined to side with the freckled dragon. They really ought watch where they were stepping.

Rayth had begun to croon softly when B'hec took hold of a headknob, grasping the freckled dragon firmly to keep him from running off again. Giving the blue a gentle shake, he decided to leave the dragons to each other and turned his attention back to Sh'en. "...proud of me?" he echoed, biting back a laugh. "I...I'm not sure if proud is the right word. More like, uh, grateful they'll be getting me out of the kitchen. Very grateful." There had all but been a celebration. "I guess the like him? They don't dislike him, at least."

Meanwhile, Rayth was trying to establish if Bajenth was really talking to him, or just getting ready to do something terrible. Like stomp on his tail a second time. Really, he all he wanted was B'hec's attention, but his rider insisted on talking to the other boy and Rayth was saddled with Bajenth. I...will I get in trouble, if you do that? he asked meekly, wondering if it were possible for him to get any smaller. I think I would get in trouble. I think Mine would get in trouble too, and that would be very, very bad.

Rayth twitched and glanced around, voice lowering a little. Thankyou...Ithink, he muttered, receiving a nudge from B'hec's boot. His rider said manners were important...and Bajenth was bronze, so he was important, so...it fit together, right?

Bajenth made a low huffing noise at Rayth's response, but he settled back down, scooting forward a bit to get closer to the blue. Oh, Rayth could retreat alright, but Bajenth would just keep moving forward, slowly. He was willing to be patient, for now. Water against a stone. Rayth was delicate, as he saw it. He took courting. They would be friends. Oh, yes they would.

If it happens again, tell me. I will take care of it. The concern and irritation were not feigned, he did not like the idea of those who were his being mistreated. You do not like it in the kitchens? I do not like it in Mine's house. His father is a fool, who does not appreciate him.

"I thought my father'd be the same. Just glad to get me out of his hair." Sh'en huffed, doing a pretty decent imitation of Bajenth's earlier irritated noise. "But he's so convinced that his sons all have to follow the trade. Now I've gone and messed it up."

The resentful front was fading, giving way to more honest emotions. Like, guilt. And, fear. He'd be leaving his family. Not now, but soon. Not just his family but everything he'd ever know. No, he wasn't a good mason but he knew the craft. Knew it better than anything. Certainly better than he knew dragons. He'd made a mess trying to oil poor Bajenth after the hatching. He got the feeling he'd be making lots of such messes.

B'hec never let go of Rayth, even as the blue started to squirm. Bajenth had approached again, but if Rayth never stood there "Oh, for the love of little green dragons," he murmured softly, giving his dragon another gentle shake as he glanced down, the freckled blue doing his best impression of a dead wherrie. "He isn't going to hurt you. Buck up."

The rider glanced back up, his cheeks turning a little pinker as he offered his fellow weyrling a sheepish smile. "Rayth is very...shy," he explained sheepishly. (To be honest, spineless was probably a much more appropriate term, but B'hec would feel quite bad speaking of his own dragon that way. He didn't deserve that! He tried, and effort was all that mattered, right?)

B'hec's face fell a little, frowning as his newly-made friend expressed some sort of distress. The bluerider reached over and patted his shoulder, offering him a crooked smile. "It's okay. Life happens, you know? It's not like you asked Bajenth to Impress to you. He just knew, and it's not like it's..." The baker waved his hand, unable to come up with an appropriate word. "I'm sure he'll be proud someday. Some people are just slow on the uptake." B'hec smiled then, brown eyes a-twinkle. "I'm probably the slowest part of the kitchen. My own grandmother would tell you so."

Rayth certainly could have used B'hec's reassurance, but it seemed His was too busy with the bronzerider. Well, the blue reasoned, bronzeriders belonged to bronzes, and bronzes were important. And that bronze was speaking to him.

Oh. Um. Father? Rayth hazarded, grasping at straws. Mine spends most time with a woman he calls 'Grandmother'. And there is 'sister'. But not much father. I just have to stay in the corner. The blue sighed dramatically. Mine says the kitchen is dangerous. It is! He set himself on fire! And they step on me, but that is inevitable. No one will ever see me.

Left to his own devices, at least around those that didn't need cheering up, Sh'en's conversation always tended to head down a gloomy track. He couldn't help it. When it came to himself, there was a lot to be gloomy about. And facing something new, something THIS new with no one to guide him--

I guide you now. Bajenth interjected, firmly.

And he would. And that was good. And things would be okay. So new to the bond that he wasn't even sure whose thoughts those were, he never the less allowed them to calm him down, giving his head a brief shake. "Nevermind. This is-- This is a good day. Look at us, both of us. Dragonriders. Even if the hatching--" his expression fell into confusion as he remembered, "What do you think it meant, so many going to outsiders? Our queen--"

I see you. I will always see you. We are friends. Whether that was what poor shy Rayth wanted to hear or no, Bajenth spoke with a resolve that was hard to argue with, even by a dragon much more forceful than the little blue. The kitchen sounds very dangerous! If you like, I will come watch after you. I will make sure you do not get stepped on.

B'hec's face clouded a little as Sh'en brought up the Hatching and he shrugged, glancing around at the small crowd gathered in the dining hall. He hadn't been bothered by the high mortality rate; as far as the baker knew, that was normal. The outsiders, on the other hand. "I'm...not really sure. I've met Fealty before...I'm not sure how he shortened his name. He Impressed one of the browns? He was nice, though. I didn't meet either of the bronzeriders, though. Or the goldrider." The brunette gave a noncommital shrug and glanced to the side as he mulled it over. "I don't...they won't leave now, though, right? They wouldn't actually just come and Impress our dragons and leave."

The baker wrinkled his nose and glanced down at his empty plate, unaware he'd been so hungry until he demolished his entire pile. Hnn. And he could use something to drink, too. "I'm gonna head back inside for a moment and get something else to eat," B'hec explained as he stood. "Do you want me to bring you anything to eat? Drink? Klah?"

Impressed or not, the youth still certainly thought like a baker!

Rayth glanced up wildly as His started to talk about venturing back into that dangerous place, his eyes whirling yellow as the boy started to walk away. Mine? Mine! he yelped, still anchored in place despite the fact B'hec had let go of his head. Mine, I do not want... But His had already given him permission to stay with his friends and...oh. Right.

F-friends? Rayth stuttered, turning his head to peer at the bronze with wide eyes. Are you sure? I wouldn't want to be friends with me. I think you might be mistaken, or something, the young dragon tried his best to explain, shaking his head. Besides, you are bronze. I am blue! he replied, as though this explained everything.

Sh'en had been picking at his own plate, there was still plenty of food left that he hadn't touched. Generally, the skinny former mason inhaled food (for all the good it did him), but today his thoughts were so tangled it was slowing him down. Not responding to B'hec's thoughts on the outsiders, as Sh'en wasn't sure what his opinion was to give it, he shook his head.

"Nah, I'm alright. Well, klah would be nice, if you're going." He smiled, but his eyes were distant, still stuck on thoughts of the hatching.

Would they stay? Did he want them too? Those were Ghenzan dragons. Their dragons. Their queen! All their bronzes, but for Bajenth. And in that, at least, he could feel something akin to pride. He would stay with Ghenza. Bajenth would stay with Ghenza, where they belonged.

"Do you want them to stay?" He asked his dragon, reaching down to stroke that bronze neck for reassurance.

My clutchmates made their choice. They can do as they wish. I worry, for Wilth though. It will scare him, to leave for somewhere strange. He should remain here, with me.

Sh'en smiled fondly at the dragon's answer. So like him, to always worry about others. He was such a good dragon.

Dragon's neither chuckled, nor smiled, so Bajenth did neither. But, nonetheless, his amusement at Rayth's response was apparent enough. You're so clever, Rayth. That's exactly it. You are blue, and I am bronze. You will always be little. You need someone who is big that will protect you. Someone who will always see you, like I will. That is why we are friends.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2010 4:34 pm

Clever? Him? Surely Bajenth must be mistaking him for someone else. But...but, he had called him little. That was right. Rayth was little, comparatively. The freckled blue huffed softly, his mind racing as he tried piece together the current situation.

Okay, the young dragon eventually answered, eyes whirling but nonetheless blue. As confusing as Bajenth might be, the bronze never actually frightened Rayth. If you say so, then it must be right. But if it turns out that you don't like me after all, you can't say I didn't warn you... he felt obligated to add, rearranging himself as the tension began to drain from his body. Trying to argue with Bajenth was akin to flying into a strong wind and Rayth was beginning to find himself very tired...

"Hey, you." B'hec nudged his dragon with a foot, his hands full with dishware. Offering a mug of klah to Sh'en, he set his heaping plate down before reaching over to grab Rayth's headknob it what might become his nervous tic. "You've been asleep for hours. Be social." Offering his unwilling blue a cheeky smile, he gazed back over the table towards the bronzerider. "This mindspeak thing. Man. A lot harder than it looks, you know? It's a good thing Rayth doesn't really mind."

There, now. That was settled then. As it should be. Bajenth stretched out his neck to give the blue a light bump to the shoulder with the side of his head. Poor little Rayth. Still worried he didn't mean what he said. But he'd always mean it. Rayth needed him. Rayth would always need him. So he would always be there.

I am going to speak to Yours now. I will try not to startle him, I promise. He told the blue gently, before inclining his head upward so that he could see B'hec. His tone was sweet, warm and honeyed. Trustworthy. I am sorry I startled you earlier, B'hec. Rayth is my friend and I wanted to be sure he was safe. You may come to me, if you ever need help with him. Or, if the kitchens are too crowded, Mine works outside. I can look after him while you work.

Sh'en, meanwhile, accepted the klah while nodding in enthusiastic agreement. I've been walking everywhere, looking like I'm talking to myself. I don't know how the senior riders do it. And... There's all this--" his hands fluttered helplessly in the air, "noise. Stuff that's Bajenth, not me. The floor under him. His wings. I have itches in places I don't actually have."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 6:55 am

B'hec couldn't help but laugh, choking a bit on the mouthful of food he'd swallowed just as Sh'en decided to be hilarious. Gagging a little, the baker managed not to kill himself and took a sip from his drink, still chuckling lightly. "Yes, I know what you mean. Rayth is always very vocal about all his itches, though. Always. It's never a mystery why he's unhappy." Stuffing another meatroll into his mouth, the rider actually managed to chew and swallow before speaking again. "Now that I have Rayth, it's a little startling to-"

And as if he knew, Bajenth Bespoke B'hec just then. The rider was glad he swallowed, or he'd probably choke again. The bronze's voice was so very different than his little blue's, so full of confidence, so strong. "Uh, thank you. I think." The baker couldn't help but frown a little; he knew he wasn't exactly the ideal rider yet, but he was brand new at this! Feeling mildly insulted, the baker tried to brush the thought away. "Thanks, but, I've got it. I'll make sure he stays out of harm's way. I've get years of practice." (And yet, he seemed to be getting a new injury every fortnight.)

Rayth watched the exchange nervously, eyes whirling an agitated yellow as he glanced between His and Bajenth. There was no use trying to tell the bronze no. Having done that once before, it was far too tiring for the freckled blue to try again. As long as His didn't actually get upset, it didn't really matter, right?

Oh, oh, oh, the dragon worried to himself, projecting on the other three without meaning too. Wings huddled against his sides, Rayth wondered if he could disappear if he thought really, really hard on it.

Somewhere, deep in the darkest hissing corner of Bajenth's mind something twisted and growled. Oh, so B'hec thought he could keep Rayth to himself did he? Thought he could take one of Bajenth's own? Well, even little Rayth wouldn't be kitchen sized for long. And then, the dragon fields, where Bajenth would have full reign.

But at the surface the irritation flashed and faded like ash in air, leaving only the barest hint of it behind. At the surface, he thought only of how much he wished B'hec would agree, how nice it would to be to have Rayth at his side during the day when Sh'en was busy. But, of course, his rider would want him near too.

Of course you will. Rayth would not have chosen you if you couldn't care for him. The dragon replied, all conciliatory noises. As if shocked at the implication that criticism might have been intended. And then, remembering Rayth's earlier comment, he added. Please, be sure that no one sets him on fire.

Poor Sh'en picking up only the edges of this conversation, wasn't sure how to react. B'hec and Rayth both seemed uncomfortable, but as far as he could tell, Bajenth was only trying to be helpful. And he wasn't going to apologize for that (not that he'd ever apologize for anything Bajenth did).

"He's very--" Shen clutched his klah, now wishing they were elsewhere, somewhere less awkward. Was he doing this rider thing wrong? Should he intervene? "He's not shy."

You are nervous, Mine. You should not be, but that's alright. We will go now. Tell B'hec that you are taking me to feed. The dragon rose, almost gracefully, to his feet. Goodbye, Rayth. You may call me, whenever you need.

"I-- he's hungry now. I guess. Sorry. We better go."
