It took a while for Serenade to sort out everything that had happened these past few days. Although, it wasn't really a lot; everything mostly consisted of the event where she very stupidly went out to patrol alone and got her Opal Crystal stolen. Just thinking about it made her heart ache, although with Zue's encouragement, Serenade had managed to get out of the phase where her schedule consisted of locking herself up in her room, lying in bed and tapping away at the electronic keyboard forlornly. This wasn't the time to mope anymore, it was the time to straighten out her thoughts and muse on what to do next.

And the first thing on her 'What to Do Next Now That Opal Crystal Is Gone' was to go and knock on Hero's dorm room. It was time to face the music, that is, if Hero was going to yell at her. She half-wished she would; Serenade felt bad that the Zodiacs were always so nice and accommodating towards her, and look what she did now.

Perhaps it would be a plus if Kunzite was in there. Serenade hadn't really gotten a chance to talk with the leader of the Cavaliers; although Kunzite was the only one at the moment. It was time to spread the word of the newcomers in town, warn the others, and hope that they would track Wiseman down to take her Opal Crystal back.

She was now right in front of the dorm room Captain Aries and Captain Kunzite shared, and rapped on the door two times consecutively. Would both of them be in the room, or only one? Either way, Serenade had been already determined to chin up and talk about the problem, and so, either way, she was going to do it.

The door opened wide enough for the pale, blinking face of Miriam Jacobs to be glimpsed, as well as a sliver of her body. She was all in white, clearly fresh from fencing practice. Serenade had seen her plenty of times before, Hero's quiet, prissy roommate who was anything but her friend, but anytime Serenade came to see Hero the Captain of the Cavaliers promptly excused herself for parts unknown. God only knew what "parts unknown" were. As far as anyone can tell Miriam did not have any friends, apart from Larissa Duncan who was, well, Larissa Duncan, and therefore possibly either taking pity on Miriam or turning her in for an extra-credit community service assignment.

Miriam curled her fingers around the doorframe. "Barrett's not in right now," she said.

Serenade smiled at Miriam as brightly as she could, which really wasn't like her usual smile, although it was considerably better than the last few days when she had shut herself up in her room. She had always taken Captain Kunzite's leave while she wanted to meet Hero as a form of politeness; perhaps Serenade still did not understand what reason Hero and Miriam could possibly have to loathe each other when they realized that both of them were on the same side.

"It's alright." She said with a bow of her head. "Do you mind if I talk to you, Captain?" To Miriam Jacobs, to Kunzite. Perhaps this would be better, since she had never gotten a chance to talk to the Cavalier properly about things.

"Oh." The door opened a little wider. "Of course, ma'am. Come in."

Ma'am was a peculiar turn of phrase that the Captain had adopted whenever addressing the Princess in any conversation that acknowledged she was a Princess at all: when they were their normal selves, Serenade Soriano and Miriam Jacobs, she was addressed with a crisp Serenade, but as soon as Miriam became Captain Serenade became ma'am. Sometimes Princess if she was feeling especially formal. Miriam was not known for being polite, but for someone so notoriously impolite, she was very... civil. Courteous, perhaps. Courtly. She did always hold doors.

Hero and Miriam's room looked like it always did, albeit the wall calendar that Miriam had pinned up was turned to a new month now, depicting a waterfall and an art-nouveau mermaid playing with her long blue hair within it. Miriam motioned for Serenade to sit down, either on Hero's bed or her own, and wouldn't sit until she had; she just stood with her hands clasped on one of her bedposts before taking a more uncomfortable seat in her wooden desk chair.

Miriam cleared her throat. "I've heard about the attack," she said. "I'm very sorry."

The green-haired girl entered the room quietly and sat upon Hero's bed upon Miriam's gesture. It wouldn't do to sit on Miriam's bed; Serenade felt that it was highly impolite for her to do so. Kunzite wasn't in her Court after all, but Aries was. Even so, Serenade would probably make her bed properly once she got ready to leave.

She looked more sombre as the other girl brought up the topic of the attack but did not sigh. Her legs were crossed, hands properly clasped on top of each other on her lap primly. "I was wondering if you know anything about the attackers? One of them called himself Wiseman, and reminded me a bit of the Chaos monsters we fought back then..." The 'we', of course, referred to the Zodiac Court; Kunzite probably knew nothing about them. "The other called herself Serenity. Black Lady Serenity." There was a pause and Serenade looked a little more distressed that the name of her cousin was being used by one of her attackers. "I don't understand what they want with the Opal Crystal."

Miriam had not mirrored Serenade's posture -- both of her feet were touching the ground and her back was ramrod-straight, with her arms crossed over her chest and her head bowed slightly. It was briefly reminiscent of the white-haired Captain she had been a very long time ago, who kneeled and kissed Princess Chronos's hand dutifully when they met: a somber military man. Miriam Jacobs was no military man, but she was somber.

She spent some time collecting her thoughts. Eventually she said, "Ma'am, I need you to tell me what both of these people looked like and what abilities -- to your recollection -- they had." She was very somber. "Please make an effort to be precise."

Serenade only blinked but did not protest. It was a proper request; they needed to know as much about the enemy at hand as possible. Even if they did not know much. "The Black Lady Serenity was a tall woman with hair like... like Princess Serenity, if you recall. Except the color of her hair was pink, not silver. She wore this black dress and called me her cousin, so that confused me a bit." As far as she could remember, the silver haired Serenity had been her only cousin, and she hadn't recalled anything else in her memories of the past.

"She told me she wanted my power." And at that, she should have known, she should have ran away. But she hadn't, and here she was, trying to find a solution for her mistake. "Then this dark-haired man with a cloak and a... dark turquoise crystal ball in his hands, I think, appeared. He had these bright blue eyes, like um, glow sticks. He took the Opal Crystal and put it right into his chest." Serenade had dreamed about that moment, that panicking moment when she felt like all hope was lost. It was like when she dreamed Charonite captured her, except she wasn't sure which was more terrifying. "He told me not to scream, but I did."

She drew in a breath before speaking again, looking at her hands instead of right into Miriam's eyes. "He choked me, without even touching me. Aries and Gemini came, but that Serenity attacked them and shot this black beam at them but Aries avoided that. And then he teleported with me and then made me float up into the air with him. He asked about where Princess Serenity was. We said we didn't know, and then he dropped me on top of Aries." And then she had pretty much fainted and awoke the next day in her dorm room.

It was somewhat painful, recalling all this and Serenade still wasn't looking at Miriam.

Miriam listened to all of this silently, without a go on or an I see. It took her a while to be sure that Serenade was finished, but once she was she looked away herself and folded her hands in her lap, an oddly faraway look in her eyes. She appeared to be staring at some undefined spot on her wall, but this was unlikely -- it was more likely that she was thinking. She had never been known to be a snappy thinker. She took her time of it this time, perhaps due to the gravity of the situation, and when she was done she looked back at Serenade and cleared her throat, like she expected her eyes to be met while she spoke.

"I've never heard of such a woman," she said. "I can only hope that she's an impostor. The way that you describe her powers reminds me of -- Queen Beryl more than anything," Miriam looked troubled, "but I can't imagine what she'd have to do with Queen Beryl. All the same, I don't know who else could be responsible."

She fixed Serenade with a level stare. "And this man spared all of your lives?"

It was all alright with Serenade, who merely waited while Miriam thought, gathering her courage to look up again instead of being a coward. It wasn't very easy, when she had mostly been sheltered all her life, first by her parents, and then by the Zodiacs when they were awoken. Still, there were remnants of her memories of her past life as a Soldier that fought beside them all, the Princess who was a strong fighter and much braver than she was right now. But that person was still her, right?

"Queen Beryl." Serenade repeated. She remembered when Astraea had grimly told her that Destiny City was plagued now not only by Charonite, but the dark Queen as well. Astraea, or Luna probably hadn't found this enough of a threat to announce it at the senshi meeting. Either that or she did not feel the need to scare them yet, but Astraea was known for being more harsh.

"He... did." She said slowly, the realization now slowly sinking in. She hadn't really thought much about this; but Miriam was right. He had spared them, and not killed them? If it had been Charonite, he would not have passed up the opportunity to eliminate her again... so what had Wiseman been thinking? "I don't know why."
PostPosted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:08 pm

"I can't imagine his and Charonite's goals are the same, then," said Miriam with a far-off look in her eyes. "Not that this is a surprise. Charonite's a Cavalier; he doesn't hold with wizardry, he never did." It was sometimes easy to forget that the dark-haired girl was, in fact, a long-lost acquaintance of General-King Charonite's, and spoke of him with casual aplomb as a result. "And I can't imagine Beryl permitting an individual more powerful than herself in her Kingdom except directly in her service. And even then." She stood up suddenly and paced to the other end of the room with her hands clasped behind her back, agitated. "Then who is he? Why? We know the sum of the threats that plague us," she gestured in frustration, "or I ought to, I once was one of them."

She was silent for a while with her back to Serenade, standing rock-still. "If only the Dark Kingdom were fighting an honorable war," she said. "I'd call a meeting between officers to discuss this. As it stands we have no guarantee that he'd follow any of the rules of war, even if it stood to benefit him."

The rules of war was a concept that no one apart from Cavalier Kunzite really appeared to believe in any more. She still sounded resolute about it.

It was also sometimes easy to forget that General-King Charonite was once in the ranks of the Cavaliers, and one of those who had served Prince Endymion, which ultimately came down to him being one of the good guys once. Past Princess Chronos hadn't really seen him much, and so her memories of him now consisted mostly of fear, fire and death. Serenade wondered however, at the mention of Beryl once again; if the dark Queen was indeed back, why was there not much news of her then? Was she really letting Charonite take the reins of everything?

What it came down to was that Kunzite didn't know, and Serenade easily overlooked the fact that he was once a bad guy. To her, it was alright now that he was working on their side, but to Aries, the Captain was still hesitant. Something she could not understand.

"So we're dealing with two big threats at the moment." Serenade summed up slowly. "The Negaverse and Wiseman." And of course, the dark Serenity... "And it's safe to assume that they're not working together?"
PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 8:27 am

"You can't assume anything," said Miriam sharply, glancing back with her arms crossed and her chin in one hand. She looked like she was in a war room. She then relented and went on, "But we have to operate on some kind of conclusion, and that'll do for now. The Dark Kingdom consists of Charonite, Beryl, and a veritable armada of idiots recruited out of some attempt to replace myself, Nephrite, Zoisite and Jadeite. If your people and the Lunars get their act together, they shouldn't be hard to overcome." Only Kunzite really would ever say this kind of thing without the slightest touch of irony. "As for the others -- we'll find them," she said, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I need to speak to Captain Aries."

There was a long and awkward silence before Miriam went on, looking at the ground, "As always and as ever, you know you have my sword when you require it. Ma'am."

This was true; and Serenade felt a wave of fear shudder through her at the thought of Wiseman and Charonite working together. The latter was someone she feared long ago, and had been appearing in numerous nightmares ever since, and there was the newcomer who had stolen her Crystal. Together, they would be formidable; but what Miriam said after was also true. Although Charonite's army had grown, she had heard that many of them were of a pretty young age, and definitely incomparable to the Shittenou.

"I thank you for that." She said finally with a smile directed at Miriam. "And if you don't mind me asking another question, there has been something I've wondered about for a long while." It was one of Miriam's earlier question that had rang something in her mind and upon dwelling on it, Serenade found that she still did not understand.

"He didn't kill me, but Charonite did back then." The girl murmured slowly, as if trying to make sense of her own words. "But then, why did Charonite offer us another chance in Barren Pines?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:54 pm

Miriam gave her an odd look. For all her deference, she didn't exactly seem liable to hide it when she thought someone had asked her an odd, obvious or unwise question. "I wouldn't know. I'd take it up with him if I were you. The Charonite I knew was a Cavalier called Mortalitas, and he was a very different man; I can't speak for his reasoning now. I was very different under the influence of corruption." She shrugged. "And I know little at all of the Barren Pines incident, save that it took many lives and that you and your Guard, regrettably, numbered among the fatalities." It was a bit strange to have one's death boiled down to a regrettably. But the Captain of the Cavaliers, too, had lived and died more than once.

Serenade made a face, grimacing just a little. Talk to Charonite about this? It wasn't as though they were on good enough terms to sit down facing each other and discuss things like amicably. She feared, and would even go so far to say that she hated him. She hated him for killing them all, for killing Ally. For killing Jude. The man at the helm of all the murders, all the destruction and all the youma.

But how did he know that the Space Cauldron had given them one more chance? Or had he not known at all? "They said we were already all dead in Barren Pines." She said primly. "Though those that died became zombie-like and could be controlled by Negaverse agents."
