A crisp breeze blew across the prairie as a small multicolored mare galloped joyfully across the swaying grasses. On the horizon was an orchard, located just outside one of the human villages it made the mare a little uncomfortable to go there but she just couldn't pass up the succulent apples that she found there each year.
As she galloped Meeka threw in a few good bucks and tossed her head, she may be an adult now but she still had the heart and spirit of a child. As she reached the orchard she slowed to a walk and all of her senses kicked into high gear. She could not find any signs of humans or other possible threats and so she entered the orchard and began scanning the trees for some of her favorite treats.
Meeka was so caught up in finding the perfect apples that she wouldn't have noticed if a skinwalker appeared right in front of her, much less anything less threatening.

Scryer had been gathering his mind from the previous night. That sweet drink that human had so foolishly left out to be taken by the winged horse... well, turns out that drink wasn't so sweet after all. For the first few hours it was fun. But now he had no recollection of what happened after the drink and before where he was now. A whole night in his life gone. The natives had odd drinking tastes. Scryer would prefer water any day.
The headache was almost gone by now, luckily. Nibbling on the apples seemed to help sooth the mental pain of the 'sweet' drink.
His ears twitched as the sound of an extra group of hooves entered the orchard. Another horse at a time like this? His wings bristled. It wasn't a heavy sound, so most likely not a threat... but still... company?
He leaned his head slightly so he could get a look around the tree. His blond mane flopped over his eye causing him to snort and shake his head to remove the obscurity.
His eyes narrowed at the sight. A mare. He had quite the luck running into mares recently...

The small mare stopped and stared at the apple above her head. It was perfect! Bright red, plump and she could smell it's sweetness already, if only it wasn't so high. Snorting in frustration Meeka trotted circles below it as if that action would convince the fruit to drop down to her level.
Realizing that the fruit wasn't just going to drop down to the ground so she could eat it Meeka tried other methods of reaching the delicious looking fruit. Rearing up she stretched her neck as far as she could but the poor mare still couldn't reach her treat. As she came back down onto all four hooves Meeka snorted angrily and kicked out at the tree trunk with her hind legs, still the fruit didn't budge.
Frowning the little mare stood looking up at the fruit with longing in her eyes. Why couldn't she have been a little taller, or had wings or something? As she stood there, wallowing in all of the negative thoughts about herself that were going through her mind at the moment the wind changed directions and she caught the scent of another soquili, a stallion to be exact. Turning her head she scanned the surrounding orchard and finally caught sight of a lavender hued muzzle peeking around a tree at her. Adjusting her position so she was fully facing the other she nickered questioningly at him "Hello?"

Scryer took a moment to debate answering, or not. Something told him it was against his nature to refuse the call of a mare. Even if they were trouble... A sigh left his maw as he slowly stepped around the tree. His wings unfolded slightly before returning to their resting position while his tail flicked about behind him.
"yes?" He sighed. His small headache still clinging to the front of his mind.
Scryer had seen the a little bit of the dilemma the mare had with the tree, but he did not see what it was about. It was curious... though he still wish he had not been found.

As the stallion stepped out into full view Meeka shifted her weight from hoof to hoof nervously. She wasn't too well versed in dealing with stallions... in fact, the only stallion she had ever met was her father, and he had abandoned her only a few days after she had been born. Forcing those thoughts out of her mind and telling herself that she had no reason to believe this stallion would be like her father she stepped a little bit closer to him.
"I..." she paused, not really knowing what to say or how to respond, he seemed irritated and she didn't know why but she was sure she didn't want to do something that would cause him to take it out on her. "I just didn't notice you there at first... you startled me." she admitted and flicked her ears back in embarrassment. Some survivor she was, couldn't even tell when there was another living creature around.

Scryer lifted his head as the female approached him. It was a mental security blanket for him to always be looking down to the other he was talking to. He felt less vulnerable this way.
It took him a few seconds to think of a response for her. He started her? She didn't notice him? He must still be pretty stealthy, even with a minor headache.
"You should be more alert." He spoke harshly. "If I were a lion or something worse you would have been killed..."
Not the best for starting conversations, but it was the only thing he could think of. Scryer, for the most part, had a major lack of social skills...

Meeka looked away from him as he scolded her, a habit that lingered from her childhood. After a few moments she realized what she had done and raised her head to stare him in the eyes. "Yes, well... I do believe if you would have approached me I would have noticed you, and if you would have been a lion, I would have run." she stated matter-of-factly as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"What are you doing out here anyway? I've never seen a soquili with wings out this far." she tossed her head to get her mane out of her eyes, it was very annoying to have such short hair and still find it a nuisance.

When she looked away Scyrer somewhat felt bad for scolding her. But that lasted until she looked him in the eye. It was like a challenge. His head nodded once as his eyes narrowed on the mare.
"You wouldn't have known what I was if I approached you..." Scryer snorted his counter mater-of-factly.
It took him a moment to answer the second question. A stair down seemed to back fire as he only found looking into her eyes to be relaxing.
"I don't have a set place to be, I go where I wish." He lifted his head and looked away from her. It was getting hard to have an ego when looking directly into her eyes.

Meeka was oblivious to the effect she was having on the stallion and as such didn't understand why he suddenly looked away from her. Frowning in confusion she stepped closer to him and then looked up, she was still shorter than him but she thought maybe she could command his respect if she showed that she was bold and brave.
"First off, I would've turned when I heard you coming closer. The only reason I didn't notice you was because you weren't making any noise." she snorted and then attempted to continue their earlier staring contest but she wasn't having any luck.
"I never said you couldn't go where you wanted, I was hoping you'd explain why you're out here when no others of your kind come this far. What brought you here?" she questioned him in a somewhat haughty tone.

Scryer had expected this one to just leave in a huff, but she remained and tried to stair him down.
It was actually amusing, though his expression would not betray his amusement.
His head pulled back as he looked her in the eye once more. Very curious...
"Nothing, nothing brought me here but my own four hooves. I have no reason to be places." He snorted and moved slightly closer breaking the comfort bubble of most.
His wing unfolded than tucked back at his side. The feathers had bristled at his words. "And you? Why are you all alone out here?"

The small mare snorted as he moved closer. Not because she was uncomfortable, but because she now had to lift her head even higher to look at him properly.
"I'm here because I always come here. Ever since I was but a filly. This is my quiet place... however... it's not so quiet when there are strangers about, or those humans, but most of the time it's very relaxing to be here."
As she continued to stare at him she began to wonder where he came from, what his life had been like, and, even if he would be her friend. She tossed her head at that, he was interrupting her quiet time and she was supposed to be irritated with him, not wanting to know his whole life story.

For the first time since he had meet this mare he didn't have a sharp comeback. There was really nothing wrong with having a secret haven, this probably was her equivalent to his constant running. It was freedom.
Scryer looked from the mare to the apple she had previously tried to get, than focused souly on her.
"You should still be careful..." His cold tone melted a bit. "Humans are worse than lions."
Scryer didn't stop think why he cared to explain that she should be careful. Was it his problem that she was alone and in possible danger? Mares were anchors... Right?
"It'll be quiet soon enough, I don't plan on staying here much longer." He spoke quickly with a snort as he found himself 'gazing' more and 'glaring' less.

Meeka finally took a few steps back so she could see his face without craning her neck at odd angles. She noticed that his eyes were softening, as was his tone, but she didn't say anything about it. She had observed stallions from a distance long enough to know that they didn't like appearing soft and she was certain that he would become callous and stubborn as soon as she brought it up.
"I know." she said softly, a rapid change in expressions would be the only thing other than her tone to let him know that she had experience in the matter.
"Well, don't feel as if you need to rush off just because of me, I was just curious as to who the new face was. I like to greet everyone so I know who they are if I ever find that I need the information."
In the back of her mind she found herself wishing he would stay but she couldn't figure out just why she was having such a strong reaction to him. She ended up deciding it was because she was sick of being alone and wanted to have someone to play or explore or... do anything with.

Scryer was thrown off by her quick change in expression. Maybe she was catching onto his quick change? Wait... Scryer realized that he had been acting much softer to the mare. Soft stallions were weak!
Scryer's nostrils flared as he snorted. Why would she need information latter? On anything.
"Just... watch yourself." He added before walking past the mare. His wings tensed as he past by.
It was more for show than anything. He didn't want to leave to be honest, but at the same time he figured if he left he would re-gain his cold edge.
Without realizing it, however, he was walking slower than usual and found himself glancing over his shoulder at the mare. Wondering if she would try to stop him. When he caught the subtle thought she snorted again and shook his head.
Nothing but trouble.

Meeka tilted her head as he snorted and then he walked past her as if to leave and she felt herself being compelled to follow him. What on earth was happening to her? She noticed he kept looking over his shoulder at her and wondered what he was thinking.
Before she knew what was happening she was following him and had quickly caught up. "I'll remember that.... but... where are you off too now?" she inquired. She was curious by nature and was genuinely interested in this stallion, even if she couldn't figure out just why that was.
