Welcome to the weyr of F'al and Brown Dith

User Image

F'al and Dith now live in the weyrling dorms. F'al now remembers just how much he hates communal living. Their little area is always meticulously clean, and F'al has hung a sheet around his alcove to give himself some privacy. Dith, however, makes up for his reclusive nature; whenever he's in the dorm and not sleeping he'll be relaxing on his bunk, chatting to anyone who happens to be nearby.

History

Pre game history:

Fealty: quite a name to be saddled with from birth. His siblings were not much more fortunate in that respect; he had one elder brother, Justice, and subsequently acquired a sister who was named Charity, and another brother named Courage. His family was fairly affluent, and so when Fealty showed intelligence as a young child he had access to the best tutors available and all the scrolls he could read. While his parents liked the idea of him being bright, really they wanted him to go into smithcrafting when he turned thirteen. Fealty failed to live up to his name and refused to go; listening to the loud banging of hammers all day was not his style, he said. This did not make him popular. Only a month after his refusal, a Searchrider from High Reaches arrived and selected him as a candidate. Though not desperately fond of riders, his parents were happy enough to get him out of the house and so off Fealty went.

At first life at a Weyr as opposed to a hold almost overwhelmed him, but as months passed he began to settle into the rhythm of life. He did not, however, really settle into making friends. While the other candidates generally spent their downtime socializing, Fealty spent it studying. He had no particular area of interest, and found information on the making of parchment as fascinating as lore on dragons. The average candidate probably considered him a bit of an odd ball from day one, and didn't change their opinion much over the turns. Yes, the turns. Turns, and turns, and turns he stood for every clutch laid on the sands but every dragonet passed him by. At first it didn't bother him too much, he was just happy to be at the Weyr at all, but as time crept by he began to worry that he would never be chosen, and would eventually have to return to his family in disgrace.

With his twenty-first name day just around the corner, and therefore only one or two chances left, hopelessness is began to take hold. He could not face the idea of not being chosen, but knew very well that there was nothing he could do to swing the odds in his favour. Resolving to keep standing for as long as he was allowed to, Fealty tried to remain hopeful.

Circumstances changed somewhat for him when the plague returned to High Reaches, during a feast attended by the weyrwomen of Telgar no less. After giving the matter some thought, Fealty decided to take the chance to move to Ghenza, at least temporarily. There was as likely to be a clutch there soon as there was at High Reaches by his best guess, and the idea of escaping the plague was very attractive to him indeed. With few friends to say goodbye to, he packed up his few possessions and waited for the order to move out.

Ghenza:

Fealty did not find Ghenza to his liking in the least; he was sent to live with a family of farmcrafters, and expected to do heavy unskilled labor day in day out. He did find the place fascinating, and made a lot of notes about everything he saw and experienced on the sheets of hide he'd brought along, but overall while he found it interesting, he did not find it nice.

He also found their hatching very peculiar; everyone within the right age bracket gathered around the eggs as the cracked, but none of the locals seemed all that fussed by the idea of Impressing. Perhaps, F'al considered, this was why the first two bronzes to hath chose boys who had come from High Reaches. Perhaps that was also why a large, skinny brown chose him.

With Dith by his side life... Well, it remained almost the same; it was still full of work; every waking second he didn't spend learning to care for Dith, he spent working in the fields. The monotony of life, and the hostility that some showed towards himself and his dragon (how dare Dith choose an outsider!), plus simple home-sickness led to F'al deciding that they would leave Ghenza as soon as possible.

Dith was around six months old when High Reaches recalled its now full grown weyrlings, and F'al (along with the two boys who had Impressed those bronzes) went along with them.

F'al

User Image

Appearance:

Age: Twenty one turns
Height: 5'5"
Gender: Male
Eye colour: Intense pale blue
Hair: Nondescript blond, short, flyaway
Skin: Light tan
Build: Somewhat chubby, but with a hint of strenght

Detailed description: Short and a little on the chubby side, F'al doesn’t look too much like what people see in their mind’s eye when you say dragonrider. His hair is non-descript blond, fine, and flyaway; he keeps it fairly short, but doesn’t pay enough attention to keep it looking anything like sharp and orderly. Perhaps the only remarkable thing about him to look at are his eyes, these being an intense pale blue. They tend to look a little far away though, F'al spends quite a lot of time wrapped up in his own thoughts and needs a good reason to concentrate on the world around him. Somewhat on the cuddly side though he is F'al is fairly fit, especially after his time at Ghenza. Thanks to his short stature, however, he’ll never be one of those at the head of the pack when running laps, and while he's a lot stronger than he used to be he won't find hefting around sacks of firestone as easy as most male riders.

Personality:

In brief: Hugely intelligent, hugely socially inept, dedicated, diligent
Likes: Reading, learning, intelligent conversation
Dislikes: Idiots, mess, making a fool of himself

Detailed personality: Sorry, you’re just not as smart as F’al; he’s not being rude about it, it’s just a fact you should accept. You’re probably not as socially awkward as F’al is either. He has no idea about tact, and though he’s read scrolls about diplomacy he certainly doesn’t know how to practice it. He definitely doesn’t have a way with words; if he’s not suffering from a severe bout of lethologica (it means I can’t remember the word I want, simpleton), he’s unintentionally spouting double entendres, being too blunt about sensitive issues, or annoying people by coming off as superior and aloof. Not too good at reading people, he’s seldom aware he’s put his foot in it until somebody get outright angry with him, or until Dith gives him an nudge and tells him he’s being daft again.

F’al enjoys learning and work, and throws himself into lessons with great enthusiasm. He’s always the one with his hand up to answer a question, and the first to glare at anyone making a distraction. Leader material however F’al definitely is not. He may be really very intelligent and possessing a strong work ethic but he can’t think on the spot to save his life, and has no charisma whatsoever. He isn’t too phased by this however, and so long as his leader is competent he’ll follow without question. If he thinks they’re an idiot, however, he’ll bring the matter up with one of their superiors; he has no intention of getting himself or his lifemate hurt because of stupid orders. He’d feel comfortable as a second in command if such a role was ever offered to him, but it isn’t a life ambition for him; he’d rather spend time expanding his knowledge of the world than elbow his way into such a post. He dislikes people who do jostle for position in that fashion, and feels the same contempt for people who think he should respect them just for the colour of their dragon or for their rank; obeying them in drills doesn’t mean he thinks well of them.

Provided there is a plan of action F’al remains icy cool in a crisis, and if there is a good enough reason to do so he’ll risk his neck without flinching. It would, however, have to be a seriously good reason for him to put Dith in danger; he is very protective of his lifemate and won’t tolerate anyone speaking ill of him. As he can’t fight physically and lacks the quick tongue to win arguments however, he is usually just left seething if anyone is really determined to make fun of his dragon. Though he viciously defends, or attempts to defend, his lifemate from anything unkind anyone else might have to say, F’al is perfectly happy to tease Dith mercilessly himself. The insults and jabs fly both ways with great frequency, and though their words might be unkind everything said is in jest; the pair absolutely adore one another. In F’al’s case, the jabs are his main way of expressing affection; he’s never been good at saying ‘I love you’ but ‘I hate you’ is easy and he knows that Dith knows what he means, and is happy to leave it at that.

In general, F’al is not a people person; he would like to be, but most people don’t seem to like him all that much for some mysterious reason. Though his bond with Dith is more than enough to make him happy, he would enjoy having human friends as well and with his dragon’s help is beginning to make an effort to be less of an unbearable tailfork, as the brown so kindly puts it. When it comes to romantic relationships however he’s not that fussed at all. Physically his preference is for men, but he’s not really interested in hunting out bedfellows either; if given a choice between a hot date and hanging out with Dith, his dragon would win every time.

F'al's acquaintances

Loved ones:

Dith - Brown dragon (Mine) - You're awful, really awful. Still, better an awful dragon than now dragon... I couldn't be happier. You're perfect, even if you are awful.

Friends:

P'ta - Jr. weyrling bronze rider (of Wilth) - You're a nice young man, mature for your age despite being skittish. I think Impressing Wilth will help you grow a bit of a spine.
Wilth - Bronze dragon (looks to P'ta) - Oh dear, poor thing, everything scares you, doesn't it? Well, P'ta and Dith will look after you, and I'll do my best not to upset you by mistake.

Acquaintances:

Amelia - Sr. weyrling gold rider (of Sharath) - A sensible, down to earth young woman; could well shape up into a decent weyrwoman with the right training.
Sharath - Gold dragon (looks to Amelia) - Well I hear you're quite the haughty little queen, and I didn't form a contrary opinion when I met you. Still, if your rider keeps you in line you might do alright.

Dith

User Image
"Fealty! I hear you! I am here!"

Appearance:

Age: Approx. 6 months
Size: Large for a Ghenzan brown adolescent
Eye colour: Most commonly green, either mellow or cheerfully bright
Skin: Deep brown
Build: Wiry, tough

Detailed appearance: Dith is growing like a weed; he's very long and very tall even for a Ghenzan brown, but he's wiry and tough rather than powerful. It's possible that he'll become powerful as he reaches adulthood, but it seems far more likely that he'll always be the wiry sort. He looks like a very approachable dragon; his eyes are almost always green and he has a relaxed, friendly air about him whenever he's not in lessons.

Statistics:

Size: Very high. Dith’s a big brown, even for a Ghenzan brown; he really rather looms over most others of his colour.
Resilience: Very high. Dith can and will push through the pain to achieve what he feels he needs to, even if he knows it’s a sharing stupid idea.
Speed: Below average. He does alright in a straight line, but he’s not very maneuverable even taking his size into account, and this slows him down in most practical situations.
Stamina: Above average. Physically tough as well as stubborn, it takes a heck of a lot to wear Dith out.
Strength: Very low. For a brown, especially one of his size, Dith is a real weed.
Intelligence: Average.
Wit: Above average. Dith’s a people person, and a savvy kind of a dragon who tends to have a good gut instinct and the sense to act on it right away.

Personality:

In brief: Protective, caring, silly, savvy, laid back, awful tease
Likes: Teasing F'al, being with people, being needed
Dislikes: People who think they're better than him or His, people who take themselves too seriously, people who mess around when things are serious.

Detailed personality: Good humored, patient, and laid back, Dith is pretty difficult to ruffle by and large. He takes life with a pinch of salt, an amused rumble, and a self-deprecating jest. He doesn’t mind being the butt of the joke day in day out if it makes other people smile; calmly self-assured he doesn’t take any amount of teasing to heart. Of the firm belief that most of life shouldn’t be taken too seriously, Dith does his best to break tense situations by any means necessary whether this be cracking a joke, making a silly noise, or generally making a fool of himself. Dignity is for other dragons; he’d rather just be happy, and see others happy. He loves people, be they human or dragon, and speaks quite freely humans other than his lifemate. Especially fond of children - anyone still young enough to Impress in his mind - when F’al is otherwise occupied Dith will often be found playing with any weyrbrats or candidates who have the time and the inclination.

When it comes to time to work his jovial attitude disappears and Dith becomes an all together more serious dragon, he’s quick to tell off who’s messing around; almost anything else in life is worth laughing over, but learning to fight the Thread is no joke. Whatever needs to be done in the line of duty Dith will do, though like F’al he’d really rather like to be able to leave his opposite number somewhere safe if danger is going to be involved. Dith believes in hard work for its own sake rather than in pursuit of power; he’d accept appointment to a position of rank if it were offered - provided F’al was happy to accept as well - but isn’t interested in joining the scrum for prestigious posts. He’ll do his work, he’ll do it well, but he won’t kiss any backsides and could happily go through life without achieving a position of command. His lack of concern with rank extends to how he treats those who possess it too; he’ll treat the senior gold, the weyrleader’s bronze, and their riders the same way he’ll treat green and blue dragons and riders of no rank: with kindness, and an assumption of equality. Telling him he is not equal to another dragon, or that His is not equal to another rider, brings out a really rather nasty side to him; he will do his very best to rip whoever spoke to verbal shreds and shard the consequences.

Provided nobody is saying they're better than him and his however Dith is a sensible, paternal, compassionate sort; he’s an excellent listening ear, and will do his best to help you sort out your problems even if getting into them was your own stupid fault. This facet of his personality, however, does make him one of the biggest mother wherries you'll ever meet. He hates the idea of anyone he cares about being hurt or sad, and if he thinks it's best he'll interfere in their lives to 'keep them safe'. However, not everybody likes being coddled... make that a lot of people don't like being coddled, but no amount of being told to back off will get rid of this stubborn boy if he's got it into his head that you're in trouble and need his help.

When he’s not trying to solve people’s problem’s for them or laughing at himself, Dith is a huge tease. He generally only pokes fun at people who know him well enough to know he’s just jesting, but does occasionally manage to upset somebody by mistake. As soon as he realizes he has, he will apologize profusely and find a way to make it up to them if he can. The only person he is really merciless with however is his bondmate; he enjoys getting the best of his friend in wordplay, mostly because he knows that F’al is much clever than he is and it makes him feel rather smug to be the victor. While he enjoys trying to follow the workings of his lifemate’s mind a great deal - who doesn’t like a challenge? - it is nice to come out on top some of the time. Unlike F’al, Dith is very free with words of affection; he never hesitates to tell people exactly how much they mean to him and isn’t even remotely embarrassed about it. Once he is old enough Dith will enjoy mating flights a great deal as much for the thrill of chasing as the hope of winning, and will go after any female that rises; he'll never have favourites. Catching a girl is always nice, but losing is no big deal so far as he sees it; after all, you can’t take life too seriously, now can you?

Why F'al?: Dith and F’al share great confidence in themselves, but neither longs for a position of power or has any great awe of their superiors. They are also similar in their attitude to work; learning and improving themselves is important, neither could have put up with a partner who was lackadaisical about duty. Dith enjoys F’al’s intelligence, and his willingness to tease and be teased a great deal, and F’al is grateful for Dith’s chattyness and skills with people. Dith loves the fact that F'al needs him so very much when it comes to social situations; somebody is no longer speaking to him for reasons he isn't quite clear on? Dith will fix it, or try his best to at any rate. Both rider and dragon, over time, will also become glad that the other isn't interested in forming romantic relationships with their own kind; they will depend on having the other pretty well at their beck and call, and wouldn't be able to stand the idea of another person seriously competing for their bondmate's time.

Dith's acquaintances

Humans:

F'al - Mine! You're so very clever, and so very stupid. I love you with everything I have and as I grow I have more, so I love you more with every day that passes. (Beloved lifemate)
P'ta - You're a sweet lad... who's a lot older than me. Still, yes, I know you struggle with being tough, but you try so hard to be strong for my clutchmate and that means a lot. (Good friend, bonded to Wilth)

Dragons:

Lateth: I said I wouldn't forget you, didn't it? (Much missed cluchtmate)
Wilth: Ah, what am I going to do with you? Look after you of course! You're as sweet as your rider; you just need to be made to feel safe, and I'll do my best to help you find that feeling. (Good friend and clutchmate, bonded to P'ta)

Title - Persons involved - Notes

Ghenza, post Impression

Hatching! - Lots - Fealty made an awkward attempt at comforting Panata early in the hatching. Almost as soon as he went over to the boy however, a large cowardly bronze hatched and chose the nervous lad. Though he was happy for his friend, Fealty couldn't help being jealous as well. He soon noticed, however, that half of the dragons that had so far hatched had chosen High Reaches boys. Believing this this could be because they wanted it more, he began to think of all the reasons he needed to Impress, them main one being the fact that he couldn't stand to go home. No sooner had this thought run though his mind, a purple and orange egg split open to reveal a large deep brown dragonet - "Fealty! I hear you! I am here!" The dragonet's name was Dith, and he promptly started trying to look after the big scared bronze, whose name was Wilth.

Dith

Well, I bet the Ghenzans aren't very happy. Their queen, two of their bronzes, and one of their browns Impressed to outsiders. One egg didn't hatch, and three greens went between, but I gather losing dragonets like that is more common here. Something to do with the lack of variety, their strange way of doing Touchings, mixing in everyone whether they have potential or not, and the fact that Ghenzans don't seem to really want to be riders. A lot of things then, and in short, this place is a mess.

Still, the most important thing about today is the fact that I Impressed. Dith is... odd. He's amazing, but he's odd. He's big, lanky, awkward... He's already promised Wilth and Panata that we're going to look after them forever. I like Panata, but I wouldn't have made such a vow myself. I suppose I shall just have to comply like a good rider; I know that phrase is supposed to be about flights but I think I shall have to comply with a lot of things. I don't mind though, whatever makes him happy. He's silly, he's horrible to me but... Right now we have no control over our bond; everything we experience goes both ways. Ever since he called out to me I've felt love stronger than I thought could exist directed at me... and I feel the same way about him. I've felt pain as well, losing his sisters really affected him, but he's pushing that aside right now in order to look after Wilth, and anyone else who might need it.

Ah, yes, I shall need to think of a rider name now. There aren't really that many good options... F'ty? Not a chance. F'alty? That sounds like faulty. F'al... that's not bad. I'll probably just go with that, it's a vast improvement over the name my parents gave me. So then, F'al and brown Dith. We have the rest of today to spend together, then it's back to the fields with me. Apparently I'll have some rider or other as a mentor to teach me how to look after Dith, this place doesn't even have a weyrlingmaster. I really hope we can get out of here and back to High Reaches. Even with Dith, I'm not sure I could survive here forever.

Lateth, Wilth, and other animals

I lost three sisters, one I never even saw. I gather that's not so very abnormal, but I wish it was... rather I wish it hadn't happened. Lateth. She's the only one whose name I knew, so I suppose it's her I'll remember best.

Still, enough angst, today was good; I hatched for starters which is always a plus. I think... I think I sort of remember being inside my shell, I think I remember what must have been the touching. None of them were really right though, some of them felt like nice kids but they were kids; I wasn't looking for a kid. They didn't really need me either, not like Fealty did. Does. Shards he's a prat; I love him but he is a total prat. It's a wonder he has any friends at all... a wonder he has a friend. That friend it Panata, who was chosen by Wilth. Both of them are going to need quite a lot of looking after, but that's what I'm here for! There are several of my siblings that will need my help, I think, but Wilth is going to need the most. Poor thing, he's just so scared of everything. If Panata hadn't been around, I don't think he would have Impressed successfully...

If Fealty hadn't been here, would I have chosen someone else? It's impossible to say now I guess. Part of me, the loyal adoring part, wants to assume I could never have settled for another. The other part of me, the practical part, wants to assume I would have compromised. There might well have been a good Ghenzan match for me out there, I might even have chosen them today if I hadn't felt that jolt of fear, misery, and loneliness from Mine. I couldn't have left him standing, what sort of life would he have had? Eh, still, the point is that I Impressed, and that most of us Impressed. True four of us went to the evil outsiders, but if anyone wants to make an issue of that with me they're welcome, I'm quite happy to laugh at their dumb arses. If they try to hurt Mine though, they will regret it sorely by the time I'm done with them. Nobody hurts Mine. Nobody.

High Reaches

We arrived yesterday. I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to Ghenza, even to visit. It was my home. Maybe it wasn't perfect but... it's all I've ever know, and it contains almost all the people I've ever cared about. F'al wasn't happy there, though, and P'ta and Wilth were going to leave too so... So what choice did I have?

The scenery here is stunning, but I miss the rolling fields. The people here seem nice, but I miss my old friends; I miss Jada and Gemi, most of my other clutchmates, our mentor even if he did think I was an idiot. High Reaches is nice, but it isn't home, not yet.

I'm sure I'll come to feel settled here in time, and for now I have new friends to make, and old friends (Wilth) to look after, so I should be too busy to mope much.

One good thing though; I've heard that Ghenza might well start selling the herbal mix. That's one thing I was really worried about; spending my life surrounded by dragons so very different to me. I don't know if it will be as effective as normal when used on adult dragons, but any improvement to their memories has to be a good thing.

All in all, I think I will come to be happy here before too long, I just wish I'd come here because I wanted to, not because I felt that I had no choice. I hate not having a choice.

...is where the heart is

Have I done the right thing? Home. It's foolish to feel such an emotional attachment to a place, but I am beginning to feel that occasionally it is alright to be a fool. This does not mean I've done the right thing. Just as this is my home, Ghenza was Dith's, and he misses it.

I don't think he really wanted to leave at all.

Some people were cruel to him because he chose me, and some people were cruel to me. Some people treated us with perfect kindness. Dith misses his friends, especially many of his clutchmates. He also misses our hosts, and I must admit a small part of me does too. We had begun to understand one another just a little. We spoke over dinner, they were beginning to be pleased with the work I did. Larna (the mother of the house) and Jarn (the youngest son) actually cried when it was time for us to go...

But I was not happy there. I was wasted on their craft, and on the place as a whole. It might have contained some nice people, but it was so constrained, so closed-minded. Dith will come to like it here; he will make new friends... It would be easier if he had a typical dragon's memory. In a few sevendays days time, he would have only a vague idea that he might once have lived elsewhere. Besides, he would have wanted to come here to look after P'ta and Wilth even if I hadn't wanted to go.

I made the right choice.

I did.
