In a definite attempt to avoid doing his homework – Jada would not be pleased with him – Barnaby had decided to stop by the hospital with Minnie Mouse. What with the park being closed down after the meteor, her walks had had to be cut down significantly. It was something that both dog and owner were not entirely pleased about. Still, the mastiff seemed thoroughly excited by the prospect of another visitation day, nearly dragging Barnaby towards the stairs the moment he'd been given his name tag (today it read 'Captain Planet').
After conquering the stairs – Minnie making him almost run up two at a time – the pair headed down the hallway towards the nearest open room. It was hard to know where to start or who to start with, which was why Barnaby picked the easiest way out and just went for the first room with the door open. That at least seemed to imply someone inside was willing to see visitors.
Knocking on the door, he stuck his head around the door frame, Minnie copying the motion and peering in the room. "Anyone here in need of some canine TLC?"

Being in the hospital was boring. All she really did was sit around, blush through getting her bandages changed, endure a doctor poking at her, and then, since she was now allowed to sit up enough to use the table, paint her fingernails all the colors of the rainbow.
And then paint them analogous colors.
And then complementary--
So when she heard someone coming down the hallway, she understandably perked up and put away her nail polish. Now was not the time to be considering the benefits of painting over her shiny green fingernails (the same color as her fuku! but with more glitter!) with gold or red. She was, almost guiltily, anticipating a visit from the Princess or the Captain, and looking forward to neither.
Imagine her surprise when someone knocked and a dog peered around the door! "Puppy," said Elke, delighted; "Can I pet the puppy?" She directed her best smile at the orange-haired boy, an inaudible current of pleasepleasepleaseplease very clear in her guileless green eyes.

Thank god it was a dog person.
Elke’s expression was all the convincing the redhead needed, and with an answering grin he let the dog go. Minnie seemed almost as enthusiastic as the girl in the bed, bounding over and placing both paws on the bed so she could lick Elke’s face. Customary greeting over, she settled for sniffing every inch she could get her nose on, sneezing once when she caught a whiff of Elke’s nail polish.
“Her name’s Minnie Mouse,” Barnaby supplied as he pulled up a chair to sit. Judging by the colour of her nails, he had to ask, “You been in here for a while?” She certainly didn't look that bad, but one never knew. Hopefully seeing the dog would at least brighten her day.

Elke giggled, settling in to give scratchies to Minnie. Such a fluffy puppy! Grandma Arma had a german shepherd, and he was not so fluffy as Minnie Mouse. Like the cartoon, right? She wanted to hug the puppy, except it still hurt a lot to bend over. Sighing, she settled for petting Minnie and giggling when she sneezed.
"A couple days," she said, "I don't really remember. Three? Four? I don't know." She had been on some pretty epic drugs, after all. Still was, just on a lower dosage. The nurses were talking about switching her to something with fewer effects on her lucidity. "Does she know how to shake?"
Then, abruptly remembering her manners, she looked up at the boy and smiled. "I'm Elke. What's your name?"

Oooh, no concept of time. Barnaby had to try very hard not to wince sympathetically. No doubt she'd been on some pretty snazzy drugs. Poor kid. But at least she was alert and seemed to know her own name. That was definitely at plus.
"Shake? I dunno, you can give it a try. Sometimes she liked giving kisses more than she does obeying commands, but maybe she'll be nice today. She can fetch though." Minnie Mouse wagged her tail encouragingly as she settled her head on the edge of Elke's bed. As much as she'd like to have been up in the bed with the girl there just wasn't enough room – she'd learned that the hard way – but her head seemed to fit just nicely. Besides, this position made for optimal ear scratching.
At the mention of names the redhead pointed jokingly to his name tag, however he decided that it wasn't very nice to play games with a girl who was coming off her drugs. Not that being called Captain Planet wasn't cool, but she probably wanted his real name.
"Barnaby. And Minnie Mouse. We stop by every once in a while to keep people entertained. You don't go to Meadowview, do you?"

She smiled at the puppy, then up at the boy. "Captain Planet," read off Elke, her green eyes a little confused. That was a silly--oh. Oh, it was like a joke nametag? Well, that was silly, and also nice. But who was Captain Planet, anyway?...
Well, no matter. With a shake of her head and a toss of her hair, she said, "No, I go to Crystal. But my brother goes to Meadowview! Do you know Grayson?" She cocked her head a bit, still scratching the puppy behind the ears.
Then, pausing for a moment, she offered Minnie her hand. "Shake?"

Did she not know who Captain Planet was? Damn, this girl needed to watch some more TV! Or maybe Barnaby needed to stop watching so much TV….
The redhead started when she mentioned Grayson, blinking owlishly at her before it all clicked. "Oh s**t you're that Elke?" He had to resist the urge to smack himself in the forehead. Like there was probably another girl named Elke in Destiny City. Way to go, self. It took him a few minutes to realize that she might take that in the wrong way and he hasted to correct himself. "Not that that's a bad thing, because it's totally not, but I do know Grayson, yeah. He works with me at the pizza parlour. With uh… well, I guess he doesn't work there anymore." Barnaby ran his fingers through his hair, dropping his eyes at the thought of Jude. Damnit. "But yeah, we do know each other, basically."
Minnie, meanwhile, seemed oblivious to the conversation and eyed the hand that was offered to her. Then, without further ado, she lifted a paw and "high-fived" Elke. Was that a shake?

She was that Elke, apparently. Did she need to have a conversation with her brother about what he told his friends? Elke frowned, tilting her head at Barnaby and then looking down to Minnie Mouse she sighed. "Maybe I need to ask Grayson what he is saying about me."
So Barnaby was one of her brother's co-workers! Ahaa, that would explain why she knew him. But didn't--oh. Probably not a good subject to bring up, so she didn't, instead smiling at the dog. "Thank you, puppy," she said, pleased enough to give more ear-scritches to Minnie.
"Has he been okay," she asked, probably more than a little creepily. "Has he been well? I haven't seen him at all." Grayson hadn't been to see her yet--she missed him dearly.

"No! No! No you don't!" Barnaby waved his hands in front of him, trying to look apologetic. "He really doesn't say anything bad about you, honest. He barely even mentions you." Oh s**t, that wasn't a good answer either. "I mean he does, but not in a bad way. I don't think Grayson could say bad things about anybody, you know?" He doubted the black-haired teen had a mean bone in his body.
Minnie looked quite pleased with herself, settling for resting her head on Elke's lap to enjoy the ear scritches. Aah, life was good when you were a Good Dog.
The redhead blinked at the questions, brow furrowing as he scratched his thigh absently. Okay? "Well… he hasn't seemed really different, I guess. He's pretty mellow, so it's hard to say if he has a problem or not. I take him home some nights so he doesn't have to walk and he seems okay. Should there be a problem?"
And he'd thought all his problems would be over after the Super Bowl.

She relaxed a little, but was still making a somewhat unhappy face at Barnaby. Then she sighed. "He misses Jude a lot," she said, "Jude was his best friend." Of course, Elke missed Jude too--he'd been on her team, hadn't he? One of the Mutables, even if he had been a meanie-faced jerk for a long long time.
Well, always.
"I don't, I haven't seen him lately, so I'm worried." She shrugged, kissed the top of Minnie's head gingerly. "He's my best brother, you know!"

Barnaby's face fell at the mention of their mutual friend, dropping his eyes to the floor for a moment. There was a pause as he considered how much he wanted to say to this girl. She was a girl, but she was also Grayson's sister, which meant she already had some merit. Fingering his name tag, he said finally, "He was mine too. We worked together, the three of us." Of course he and Jude had done other stuff (no, not that kind of other stuff) but that was top secret. Not even Grayson knew about that.
Minnie's tail thumped against the floor as she gave Elke a kiss of her own on the nose. Finding it hard to reach she stepped up on the edge of the bed and proceeded to continue her doggy kisses.
Eager to move off of the topic of Jude, the redhead asked, "Is he your only brother?"
