There were always disadvantages to having a decent sized house in the city. One, you were generally quite far away from most major public transit routes. Two, your neighbourhood tended to be populated by older people. And three, you tended to have little to no backyard.

Number three was the reason that Barnaby was out, marching through the slush, with Minnie Mouse. With the park currently sectioned off due to the recent meteor crash – what was up with that? – the redhead and his lovable companion were actually forced to walk the streets like a normal dog-owner pair. For Barnaby, that meant more people to watch. For Minnie Mouse, it meant more pigeons to investigate. Needless to say, her owner was not impressed.

"Minnie leave it, come on. They're not going to let you touch them," the redhead complained as he gave the leash a tug. "Scaring them that many times cannot be fun, honestly. They don't even go very far."

The mastiff simply wagged her tail at him, tongue lolling from the side of her mouth. Didn't the boy know how the game worked? He either gave her her own toys (or food) or—pigeon!

"Oh come oooon," Barnaby hissed under his breath as the dog made a dive for a pigeon who got too close, landing in the process inches away from a passerby's foot. Oops.

Stupid park being closed! Ellie was mentally grumbling about the fact her usual shortcut through the park had been cut off. If she had been a better Sailor Scout, she might have given more of a damn, but she really didn't. It was just annoying.

However, now instead of walking through the park, she had to walk around the park to go anyplace in the city. It just meant if she was pressed for time, she would have to leave earlier by at least 10 minutes. Which actually was very hard to do when she was so accustomed to leaving at particular times. The time would come, and then she'd realize "oh wait, I WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE 10 MINUTES AGO!" It was not the ideal dilemma.

Fortunately, today was not exactly a rushed day. Mom and Dad were staying late at work again, and so the blonde tomboy knew the procedure. Go downtown, kill some time over at Hank's garage, then get some food before heading home again. She was at phase 1, walking to the downtown area. The path she was taking this time was nowhere as awesome as the park route. In fact, there were too many pigeons in the area. Pigeons were such ugly little gray birds. Ugly poopy birds.

"Scat, ya stupid birds!" she grumbled out once as she used her foot to try and clear a path for herself from the pigeon flocks. Of course, the birds only waddled off as fast as they could or made a half-hopping, half-flying attempt to move ahead of her by a few feet. She would have sighed in aggravation, but her efforts managed to encourage someone's dog to pounce up right in front of her pathway.

Birds were stupid.

Dogs were awesome!

If Ellie was a considerate person, she might have asked if the dog was friendly, asked to pet the dog, etc., etc. That wasn't Ellie's style. Instead, a big grin spread across her face as she rather swiftly knelt down to the dog's level to get a good look. It was a goober of a dog, at least based off looks, but it was a real dog. Not a sad excuse for a dog like those stupid purse dogs. "Lookit ya!" she said with a chuckle. "Who's that? Who's that? Ya wanna sniff?" She held out her hand, offering it to the dog. Did she care that there was a person on the other end of the leash attached to the dog? Not so much.

Person! Minnie Mouse’s ears perked instantly, completely losing interest in the pigeons she’d previously been chasing. A person with real hands and real love (and maybe some real food) was ten times more interesting than the smelly birds. It only made things better that said person was also incredibly interested in her. She’d met enough people to know who liked big dogs and who didn’t, and this person was definitely in the former category.

The mastiff’s tail wagged furiously as she sniffed the offered hand, quietly perplexed by the number of interesting smells. Clearly Ellie had touched something that smelled vaguely of food, as Minnie began licking her fingers with her large, pink tongue.

Barnaby had enough sense to let the two get acquainted before he said something. Who would have thought he’d meet Ellie out here? But, then again, the park was closed, which meant that everyone pretty much had to use the same routes. At least she liked his dog.

“I didn’t know you liked dogs,” the redhead said, seemingly unbothered by the fact that he was stating the obvious.

"Oh, ya like what ya smell?" Ellie grinned, leaving one hand out for the dog, and using her other hand to scratch behind the dog's ears. In all honesty, the blonde tomboy could have easily spent the full afternoon like such, but a voice cut in to spoil the perfect mood.

It was a very familiar voice in fact, and glancing up, she spotted a familiar redhead.

"Oh, Price, ya son'ova b*tch!" she chuckled out, giving the dog a rather loose ruffle to the ears. Dog ears were fun to flop around with playfully, and Ellie seemed right at home. As she continued to occupy herself with the adorable dog (oh yes it was), she pointed out "Ya probably didn't know because ya probably never asked."

The girl then leaned in and teasingly offered her face to the dog, as if encouraging it to give her a big sloppy kiss. Some people didn't like such, but Ellie adored dog kisses. They might have been sloppy, messy, sticky, or gooey, but they were always welcome with Ellie. At least, when they came from dogs. She had no stance on people kissing in such a way, because she wouldn't let anyone attempt kissing her like such.

"Dog gotta name?"

Now this was the proper way to treat a dog. Minnie's tongue lolled contentedly as she was scratched behind the ears, clearly in something akin to canine heaven. Why didn't her boy have more friends like this? Clearly he needed to get out more.

Barnaby couldn't help but snerk at her greeting, but he grinned just the same. Ellie was definitely the kind of girl that needed a little getting used to – especially for the old-fashioned type like yours truly – but it was getting easier and easier to understand her the more they met up. "Never came up in conversations," he replied, giving the leash a little more slack so the mastiff could do as she pleased. "Yeah, Minnie Mouse, after the cartoon. My mom has a sense of humour."

There was nothing mini or mouse-like about the dog, but that didn't stop her from slobbering kisses all over Ellie's face when it was so nicely offered to her. It was probably a good thing she'd just come from the house. She hadn't been outside long enough to get anything decidedly disgusting in her mouth.

Side-stepping a little so that they weren't standing in the middle of the street, the redhead gave his dog an idle scratch before asking, "They keep you out of the park too?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 11, 2010 10:27 pm

Ellie was well trained in the ways of dog kisses. After her face was thoroughly slobbered up, she hugged the dog close and literally wiped her face off against Minnie's fur. By the time she looked back up, there was a big grin on her face.

"Yer mom... is a riot, Price!" A large laugh escaped her as she continued to give the dog's ears just the right amount of attention. "How old is she?" "She" meaning the dog, and in an effort to make this point clear, she ruffled the dog's ears some more.

While waiting for an answer, she finally answered his question. "Yeah, totally cut off my usual route downtown. Gotta go th'long way now if I wanna go anywhere."

The girl then hugged onto the dog almost like a child who just got a puppy for Christmas. "Ya know, I'd love t'take 'er home with me. Always wanted t'get a dog." She sighed before confessing "Parents won't allow it though... they ain't home enough fer pets, and I'm pretty busy as well."

She liked dogs and she liked his mom? Plus another five points to Ellie. It was pity she couldn't actually meet Barnaby's mom. The day that he brought home a girl he wasn't interested in would be the day the moon crashed into the Earth.

"Probably about five or six now, I'd say. Got her before we moved to Destiny City and that was four years ago, so six sounds right." Nonchalant was the only way you could go when you had your dog's birthday highlighted on your calendar and not your parents'. Barnaby totally hadn't already got her birthday presents in advance either. The stuff in his closet was just for show.

At the mention of taking her home the redhead laughed. "If your parents don't want a dog, I don’t think they'd much like this one. You couldn't miss her and even if you did, she'd shed and drool all over your house." The way he spoke about it almost sounded like he liked it, but he was a dog lover. "And they won't let you have any pets? Not even like one of those rats or mice or a fish? I hear fish are nice." And boring.

"Oh, so she's a big girl, eh?" Ellie grinned before doing something rather stupid. She placed her arms under Minnie's stomach, and on the count of 3, she attempted to lift the dog up. She was a good strong girl, but this dog definitely wasn't about to budge under her efforts. Though the tomboy was stubborn at times, this was not one of those times she was going to push it. The last thing she needed was a bad back at the prime age of 16.

"Guess that means yer a middle-aged lady, Minnie!" Abandoning the location she had been attempting to lift off the ground, she just ruffled the dog's ears some more. After another satisfying session of dog-love, her golden eyes glanced up to the redhead.

"So where did ya live before Destiny City? I've personally been 'ere all my life." There was a small pause, and then soon enough the girl was laughing as well. "Well, my parents don't have an issue with the house bein' a mess. It's a mess all th' time. It really is just a time issue. I'm lucky if I get t'see both of my parents fer 2 hours a day." She turned to face the dog and sighed slightly, almost as if she was used to having a failing amount of time with her family.

"And none of those other animals are nearly as awesome as dogs. Isn't that right, Minnie?" If there had even been a hint of sadness or seriousness on Ellie's face, it soon enough disappeared as she offered a renewed grin to the dog. Oh yes, dogs really did seem to have an effect on this teenage girl.

"Yeah she's pretty big," Barnaby agreed, before he watched her try and actually lift his dog up off the ground. Was she serious? Really? "I wouldn't—" he started, but realized that it was about as useful as warning a brick wall. Ellie would find out that despite how much Minnie wanted to be lifted up and cuddled, some things were just not meant to be.

The mastiff, however, simply wagged her tail furiously at the lifting, seemingly unaware that Ellie was trying to do anything. Was this some kind of new game? She wasn't sure how it worked but she could learn! Ellie stopped the "game" before it got anywhere, but ruffled her ears just the same. Whatever had happened, she had been a Good Dog, and for that Ellie was rewarded with more hand kisses.

The redhead shrugged at the mentioned of his past, holding out his hands to count off on his fingers. "We moved around a lot when I was younger 'cause of my dad, so maybe… I dunno, four or five places before here? We were in big, coastal city before here. It had a nice port and everything. Minnie used to harass the seagulls instead of the pigeons. I think they were more entertaining." Minnie's ears perked at the mention of seagulls, tail wagging furiously.

Barnaby could sympathize at the mention of not seeing family. "'s all the more reason to get a dog, at least in my opinion. Dog's not a human, but at least they keep you busy. That's why I got her. And you could train a dog to hang around the garage, couldn't you? Teach it to fetch you your tools and stuff?" He grinned at the mental image.

"Wow... yer well traveled, Price!" The hand kisses were somewhat returned back to the dog, the girl tastefully deciding to use the newly slobbered hands to ruffle the dog's ears again. It was a never ending cycle, but Ellie didn't mind. The mention of his previous place of residence did manage to spark up a bit of interest in the girl.

"Oh... didja live by th'beach then? That's kinda nifty I guess!" She turned to the dog and pressed the dog's fluffy face up close to her own, as if speaking solely to Minnie.

"I bet the gulls were bigger targets, eh? Probably much more fun t'chase!" If the tomboy wasn't careful, the dog was going to end up licking her teeth with how much she was grinning.

The mention of getting a dog of her own managed to get a big laugh in turn. "Oh god... with how much money my parents spend on me with car parts... I doubt that would fly!" There was that, and she needed the time to at least get her vehicles together before getting a dog. One baby getting her fully devoted efforts at a time.

"To be completely honest it was a pretty gross beach in the bits the city didn't take care of, but the boats were really cool. I almost bailed out of high school to go be a sailor but my parents didn't approve." His mother least of all, though she had tried to be supportive. The only reason he could forgive himself for even thinking about leaving her was that he'd been young and hadn't realized how much she'd missed his father. Ah the folly of youth.

Barnaby nodded at the mention of bigger targets, giving Minnie's ear a playful tug. "They had food lots of times too, which was like a double bonus. I can't say the beach goers like her much though. She'd be sopping wet from the water, covered in sand, and chasing a flock of seagulls that were raining bread bits as they flew." Thought it hadn't been funny at the time – he'd got in quite a bit of trouble – it was funny to think about now.

"Aw, but you don't have to get a drooly one like this monster here." The redhead gave Minnie a shove and she responded by gnawing on his fingers. "You can get one of those little curly ones. Smart. Uh… Poodle! That's it!"
PostPosted: Mon Mar 29, 2010 4:43 pm

If she had any inkling to keep a straight face, it completely vanished with the mention of the "wonder" that was Minnie at the beach. It was a wonderful mental image, and in all honesty, it was something the tomboy would have loved to see.

The girl began to hoot and holler, unable to pass up a good laugh for a worthy cause. The worthy cause being Minnie, of course. Of course, the whole time she laughed it up, she was petting the dog and speaking to the dog.

"Oh yes, I woulda loved t'see that! Yes I would'a! Price is damned lucky t'have ya!"

And then, the redhead screwed things up. The laughter cut itself off rather suddenly at the mention of the most horrible dog breed in the world.

"No," her voice flatly stated. "Those ain't dogs. They're powder puffs that bark." Obviously Ellie's stance on poodles was very obvious.

"Ya see this?" The blonde pointed to Minnie, finger directly in front of the pooch's nose. "That's a real dog."

The fact that Ellie enjoyed the story only made the memory even fonder. Good old Minnie. She'd been a pain in the butt growing up, but it had all been worth it in the end, every single apology he'd had to make. Now he had a real man's best friend. What more could a guy ask for?

However, it appeared that not all dogs were made equal.

Barnaby's eyebrows shot up at her tone. Ooookay, apparently she didn't like poodles. But it was Ellie, and he should have known that anything even remotely girly would be instantly on the blonde's hate list. Sigh. He had only been trying to give her a viable suggestion for a dog breed.

"She can bark too," the redhead pointed out defensively, "Very loudly when she wants to." He'd had one of the neighbours over several times about that. "I know they're not as big as her, but they're not one of those teacup things. What kind of dog would you want, anyways? And don't say my dog."

Because she was, you know, his.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:00 pm

"Ya ever teach Minnie how t'speak? Cause, that'd be awesome if she already knew how ta bark on command!"

The barking part obviously wasn't what bugged Ellie about poodles. Again, this was Ellie, and the girly factor was indeed an important one to keep in mind. Absentmindedly, the girl began to pet the dog some more, eyes drifting up to the sky. She was obviously giving this a lot of thought for something that should have just come from the gut.

"Lessee 'ere... I hate purse dogs... anythin' smaller than a medium-small dog is too small. And again... poodles ain't dogs..."

The sky apparently had the answers written up in the clouds or something. Eventually, her eyes returned to the boy's face and a big grin spread across her cheeks. "Well, I guess easiest route t'go would be a mongrel, wouldn't it? Can't go wrong with one'a those, right?" Obviously the tomboy could care less about show-dog quality dogs. Any dog would be good enough in her eyes, as long as it wasn't a failure priss-dog.

Once more, the blonde stood up and leaned down, as if prepping to try to pick the dog up again. However, this time, instead of putting her arms under Minnie's stomach, she simply just nabbed the dog by the paws and stood the dog up nice and tall on her hind legs. "It would be nice if I could keep yer dog though! Ain't gonna, 'cause I still can't get a dog."

Barnaby laughed. "It's not the speaking that's the problem, it's the getting her to shut up. She has no problems making herself heard, don'tcha, Mini Wheats?" He grinned down at his dog, teasing her affectionately. There was nothing quite like a mastiff bark, if he said so himself. "I swear, the mail carrier thinks she's some demon dog or something. He tries sneaking up on the house every time like she's going to figure out how to open the door and chase him down the lawn."

The redhead listened as Ellie listed off her dislikes, trying to keep mental tabs. Well, she certainly knew what she didn't like. It was hard to disagree with her, though. Barnaby was of a similar opinion with dogs (though he didn't quite see the problem with poodles. As far as he was concerned it would have been a perfect dog for Ellie, but perhaps some things were not meant to be).

"Mongrel? Yeah… mongrels are good. Sturdy, at the very least. Hell, maybe you can adopt or something. Drop by the pound, for something suitably smart, not hairy, and not poodle-related and you may have your wonder dog! Hey, maybe you can train it to be a pit crew dog or something." That was amusing. He'd tried to train Minnie to bring him things, but her recognition of different tools was limited at best. She was good with food and toys though. (Surprise surprise).

At the mention of the no dog rule he teased, "Hey, maybe when you're a big girl they'll let you have a dog."
