Sharkal wrinkled his nose, nibbling on his bread roll as he glanced around the crowded dining hall. The youth sighed, barely shuffling out of the way in time to avoid a large, burly looking man. Scowling and hissing something unsavory, the candidate cast the man, already sitting down, a scathing look, wrinkling his nose as he stormed through the tables. Finding somewhere to settle was hard, especially when one was trying to avoid sitting with one larger than one's self. On his shoulder, Shimmer began to shuffle, taking the ends of his hair in his mouth and tugging softly, already tired of the game her boy insisted on playing.

When the gold flit found herself ignored, she opted to take matters into her own claws and scuttled into Sharkal's hair, perching atop his head and crooning. The boy winced, her small talons digging into his scalp as he reached up to drag her out. Shimmer nipped at the candidate's fingers before crawling back down, extending her wings and nipping at his ear. She was hungry, hungry! They both were, and Shark needed to hurry up and sit down so he could feed her!

The boy rolled his eyes, tearing off a piece of bread to offer to his fire lizard before heading into the mess. As long as he was walking, Shimmer would be satisfied, he decided. Eventually, he found one of, if not the, only open end of a table and sat himself down, ignoring whoever was on the other side. "Alright, alright," he was muttering, Shimmer already fluttering to the table and humming softly, waiting for her boy to pick out something tasty for her to eat. "You'd think I let you starve," he sighed, rubbing the gold's head as he glanced around, always on the look out for some potential danger.

T'rus, focused on inhaling his own meal as quickly as politely possible, so that he could get back to Akerth, barely glanced up when Sharkal took the seat across from him. It wasn't until he'd stuffed the next fingerroll in his mouth that he glanced up a second time, brain processing and presenting him with details about his new dinning companion.

That information alone might have been good for little more than a smile and a polite hello. Instead, it was the gold firelizard that commanded his further attention. She was a pretty thing, and that was worthy enough of note, but more to the point, it meant that Sharkal knew about the things. More than T'rus did anyway. And that made him, dragonless though he was, useful.

And anyway. T'rus had impressed after numerous standings. There was nothing to say Sharkal wouldn't do the same. Building and maintaining alliances early, that was the ticket.

"Sharkal, good to see you." And, judging purely by T'rus's tone and expression, one would think that Sharkal was exactly the person that he'd been looking for. Indeed, that he'd been sitting, waiting and hoping that said candidate would show up. "It's been awhile. Since the hatching? Akerth keeps me busy."

He eyed the firelizard, smiling with what was probably true admiration, "She's a pretty one."

Sharkal blinked, pausing in mid-chew when the rider across from him actually decided to speak. He scowled almost immediately, casting T’rus a wary look as he swallowed his mouthful whole. The candidate did not break his gaze as he ripped another piece of meatroll off and offered it to Shimmer, the firelizard delicately taking it between her foreclaws as though there wasn’t some sort of confrontation overhead. Finishing off her treat quickly, she inspected her talons before looking back up at her boy expectantly, tipping her head to the side with a quiet chirp.

“Hello, T’rus,” Sharkal replied eventually, some part of his brain gently reminded him that it was usually appropriate to return a greeting. “Congratulations on Impressing, by the way. Akerth is very handsome, one of the best looking in his clutch,” the candidate continued, remembering that particular hatching clearly. The bronzes were, well. Sharkal was glad neither of them were his. T’rus’s dragon seemed a little pushy, at least from the way he was handling his clutchmates, but perhaps it was hard to judge when they were so fresh out of their shells. Either way, however, the brown was handsome with some very fetching markings.

“Oh, Shimmer?” The firelizard chirped at the mention of her name, swiveling around to peer up at the other boy. She offered him a cheerful cheep, flexing her wings as she preened a little. Sharkal sighed and shook his head. “She likes attention. She’s very smart, though. She’ll fetch things and she knows better than to beg. Don’t bother him, Shimmer,” he added, patting his forearm. The lizard scampered over, scrabbling onto Sharkal’s arm and up to his shoulder, taking her customary perch. Smiling, Sharkal dug into his pocket and offered her a small piece of sausage. “So, uh. How’s the dragon?””

Clearly, Sharkal had no more mastery of conversation than the last time he’d come across T’rus.

There, then. Sharkal's compliment to T'rus was his chance to play down the whole impression thing, to make some sort of gently insulting toward Akerth and generally play down his new status and play up his relationship with Sharkal as a fellow weyrbrat. But it was still so fresh and bright, when he tried to find the words to dismiss it, to dismiss Akerth they just wouldn't come. He managed to repress the goofy smile thinking of the dragon usually summoned, but that was all he could do. "Akerth is-- healthy. And learning well. He has some difficulty with his siblings, but we're working on it."

There. At least he hadn't gushed. Gushing was bad. Gushing was always bad. Trying to push Akerth out of his mind, which was difficult, as the dragon was part of his mind, he let his gaze fall on the firelizard again. Right. His current concern and the subject that made Sharkal of particular use at the moment. The egg. As if he had time! Shards.

"It's good to see you've trained her out of those bad habits. Too many flits beg and cause trouble as they please." He gave the gold an approving little smile and returned his gaze back to Sharkal. He had a level, settled way of looking at people. There was no sense of distraction or boredom about it. His smile though, was ever so slightly lazy, to calm and easy to indicate anything like real excitement. "You got her as an egg?"

Sharkal nodded silently, politely even, as the newly made rider spoke about his dragon. As far as he could tell, the former weyrbrat was happy with the match. And in the end, the candidate considered, who wasn't? Oh, surely, some riders complained about their dragons now and again, he could only assume some dragons did the same as well, but he highly doubted a dragon could ever pick someone truly wrong for them. They were supposed to be rather clever, more so than firelizards, anyways.

Reaching up to stroke Shimmer's head, he couldn't help the twinge of pride when T'rus acknowledged the hard work he'd put into the beautiful gold. The firelizard crooned softly, sensing small boost in self-esteem. Picking her way across her boy's shoulder's delicately, she laid herself down across his shoulders, allowing her tiny forepaws to hang as she watched the stranger with a twinkling blue eye. Her thoughts may never come in the form of words, but Sharkal often thought her expressions hinted at a very intelligent being wrapped up in hide and talons.

Of course, she was also the one who had to remind her boy to get back to his conversation, swatting him gently with her tail when the silence dragged on far too long after T'rus's last question.

"Oh, uh, yes. Sort of." He frowned a little, threading a hand through his bright blond hair. "A friend of mine, he's gone now, but he got her for this girl he rather fancied. As an egg. But the girl, she didn't like him at all, so she wouldn't take the egg. He was mad and told me to take care of it until he found a better girl, but it hatched before he did, so uh...I ended up with Shimmer." Sharkal shrugged, fighting against the urge to squirm as he sat under T'rus's fixed gaze. There was nothing quite like being sized up. It was common knowledge he and T'rus grew up in similar situations, but where he always had a rock to be the barnacle to, T'rus was his own rock and now that Sharkal lacked one, that made him easy pick-

Wait a minute. T'rus was a rock. Sharkal needed a rock.

This could work.

"So how are you getting on with the other weyrlings, then?"

That was, if Sharkal was perhaps more clever than his metaphorical barnacle.

"Oh, the group is alright I guess." T'rus's tone indicated that in fact, he was less than pleased but inclined to be forgiving. "I'd have liked to see more of our sort impress. We've got a stands impression bronze who I don't think's ever seen a dragon before. Two women with greens and one of them wants to think she's a man. Dragon's so lazy it probably didn't bother to check."

Now, if T'rus was speaking to one of said female green riders or outsiders he'd have been all about equality. But with Sharkal, what he wanted was to emphasize the similarities between the two of them. Besides, as far as the damn bronze riders went, his statements probably came dangerously close to his true opinion on the matter. Generally, he liked to keep those to himself, but the bronzes were under his skin and he'd not yet figured out a way to dismiss that anger.

"But nevermind. I'm sure they'll shape up." He waved a hand in a quick gesture of dismissal. "Akerth'll see to that."

"I got a firelizard egg myself recently. I've got to admit, I know nothing about the things. You sure seem to, though." He certainly wasn't going to go as far as to ask for help, but hopefully, Sharkal was not so socially dense as to miss the cue he was being given.

T'rus' opinion of his fellow weyrlings didn't really sound favorable, and Sharkal could not withhold a little snicker, glad he was not the only one of such an opinion. "Girls shouldn't be ridin' nothin' but golds," he agreed, Shimmer chirping as she seconded the opinion. "And even then, there are a lot of men who'd do a better job than..." The candidate trailed off, his bright blue eyes wide when he realized how much he just let roll out of his mouth. Clearing his throat, he dropped his gaze, suddenly fascinated with his meal as he shoved a large hunk of bread in, hoping maybe it would keep him from saying anything else incriminating.

"So, you have a firelizard?" he parroted, eager to change the topic. "Yeah, I, uh, know some stuff. I could help you train it, when it hatches. If you want." The honey-blond frowned, chancing a glance upward before quickly looking back down. "But the sausage thing works well. Shimmer's the best behaved flit I've ever seen."

The gold preened, fluttering her wings as she glanced over at T'rus. Even though her boy was afraid of the rider, she certainly wasn't! He was talking about her, and if he talked about her, Shimmer knew the man had good taste. After all, a dragon had chosen him, so there must be something good about him. Dragons had very good taste, too. Chirping quietly, the gold swooped off her perch and snatched a roll off Sharkal's plate. Landing in front of T'rus, she shuffled around it and balanced on her back legs, crooning again as she looked up at the boy expectantly.

T'rus allowed Sharkal's comment about male gold riders to pass without comment, as seemed best. There were just some things that one musn't be overheard saying, and the table they shared was a crowded one. He did however give one of those smirking nods that usually indicates that one agrees with you even if they don't actively state said feelings of agreement. It might be enough to at least prevent Sharkal from assuming any disapproval.

"Would you? I've got Akerth and I don't think he'd appreciate a poorly behaved firelizard badgering him. But something more like your Shimmer, he'd find useful, I think." A wry smile there, a bit of fondness leaking through the more casual exterior. "Anything I should worry about until it hatches? I don't have a lot of time but I don't want to kill the thing."

As Shimmer approached, roll in tow, T'rus chuckled, extending a hand toward the elegant little creature. "Is that for me?" He asked, approval mingling with laughter in his tone. If the firelizard was more or less a pretext for their original conversation, T'rus was beginning to find that he really did like the little gold. Now, if only people were so quick to be befriended.

Her gift accepted, Shimmer fluttered her wings happily, chirping her approval before turning around and scuttled across the table, her little talons clicking on the wood. With a graceful leap, she was on her boy's arm and scurrying up, up and she was perched upon his shoulder again, curling around his neck as she hummed satisfied noises. Not a thought later, she was offered another bite of sausage and Shimmer accepted her reward gratefully, the only sound her quiet munching as the gold demolished her treat.

"She mus' like you," Sharkal noted faithfully. To be fair, there weren't a lot of people Shimmer didn't like, but she didn't go feeding the majority of them, either. He shrugged, chancing a glance across the table at the rider again. The smile caught him off guard and the candidate quickly found something else to stare at, it never occurring to the blond that T'rus might take offense to Sharkal's refusal to meet his steady gaze.

It took him another moment (and a very tactical n** to the ear) to remember T'rus' original inquiry. "Oh. About your egg. You just need to keep it warm so it won' die n' stuff. And don' drop it. Obviously. And then you just have to, uh, feed it. When it hatches. Right away, or it will go away."

Not wanting to be seen as the sort that rejected the gift, T'rus obediently took a few thoughtful bites of the roll that Shimmer had brought him. It seemed that she was getting rewarded for her good behavior, so at least they'd both benefited from the exchange. Finishing off the roll, he said, "Sorry to steal your meal."

Despite Sharkal's constant attempts to avoid meeting his eye, T'rus kept his gaze firmly on his dining companion. He wasn't offended, but he wasn't about to give up, either. If it made Sharkal uncomfortable to have T'rus's full attention at least he would leave the meal remembering that he had had it. Perhaps he'd forget the unease and only remember the attention.

"I will take the advice in hand then, and try not to kill the sharding thing. Never had a flit before, but if I can get one like yours, I suppose it will be worth it." He was just about done with his meal, but content to remain and talk to Sharkal awhile longer. "You sure you don't mind me finding you for advice when it hatches?"

It was at that point that Akerth woke up, and it was something that T'rus could feel, almost experience. As if he was waking as well, something coming alive in his head.

Food soon, T'rus. I am waiting. Nothing urgent or whiny or fierce, just that firm, tone. Words like rocks. Words to build a world on.

"Coming." He said it outloud, then, with a foolish grin. Coming. I am with an ally, I'll be there in a moment.

He stood then, favoring Shen with a gesture between a nod and a bow. "That's the boss. I've got to run. I'll introduce him to you next time you talk. And hey, if you ever need anything, you know where to find me." He sounded so sincere when he said it. So reliable. As reliable as Akerth did. As reliable as a mountainside.

Sharkal bobbed his head, nodding as Shimmer chimed in her her approval. "Uh huh. Trainin' lizards is better than doin' chores, for sure." Except for maybe, perhaps, catching tunnelsnakes. The candidate had always taken a certain amount of pleasure in hunting the little creatures out one by one; he enjoyed it far more than any other the other weyrbrats he knew, at any rate. "I'm always doin' some kind a' somethin', so. Not hard to find."

He glanced up when T'rus started to make no sense, but as the brownrider gathered himself to leave, Sharkal put two and two together. It was his dragon. Right. That thing. He'd almost forgotten T'rus was a dragonrider now, but now that he was, he had Very Important Things to do. Apparently, right now. Wondering idly what Akerth might want, the weyrbrat met his companion's gaze and bobbed his head before dropping his eyes again, focusing on his meal.

"Kay. I'd like to meet him," Sharkal admitted with another nod. He'd always wanted to meet a dragon up close and personal. They were so big, and powerful, and...well, he was going to need to Impress his own, certainly. "I will see you around, T'rus. Good luck with that egg!"
