More practice on color: http://g-man777.deviantart.com/art/Kitch-Color-156089714

Sorry the scanner dulled it a bit, but you can still get the idea.

No joke, 25 shades of blue used on the coat (Plus a tiiiiiiiiiny dab of orange in the shadows, although it doesn't show though)

Also, character was not designed by me, and is drawn to exact specs of the OA, so anything related to that are not on me.

The shoulder on the left looks like it doesn't quite suit the angle. The forehead seems to curve (clockwise...?) too soon.

The 25 shades of blue don't show. I can notice maybe 3-5 different blues... If you have pencil crayons in those colours, you might as well just use those colours rather than mixing a bunch of blues, I'd think. Well, that's what I'd do, anyways. I used to use a bunch of colours on things and you could barely tell the difference between them... I questioned my methods and I've been trying to make sure the colours were noticeably different ever since (especially with shading). But if you had to mix them to create those particular colours, it's understandable to do so.
Anyhow, went a bit off track there. The shading doesn't seem too effective. It's better on the face and hair (hair colouring could maybe use some work), but I'm not really clear on the light source with the coat's shading. That shoulder on the right sticks out the most ot me. On most of the picture, it's like the light source is near where "north-northwest" would be on a compass, but maybe a foot away from your monitor (towards you) and a foot to the left of the center of the picture. The light is coming from above, but that shoulder looks like the light is coming from below (similar to my other "coordinates", but from south-southwest).

Most anime seems to use only two colours on the clothes (default colour and shaded colour). There's sometimes a third colour (white) on the skin and hair for additional shine. Fan made pictures only have to worry about one picture, not a whole animation, so lots of them make their colouring more exciting than that... I have no advice about that, though, since I've never tried it before. I just recommend avoiding colours that don't seem to make any difference at all (not trying to call your efforts futile since I really don't know which colours you had to work with, plus it's always good to try new things). Keep an eye on consistency in shading and try to observe how other people (or professionals) do it.

The light idea was that it was coming from beside her on the west side, cause I have photos of myself where similar shadows formed. And I mostly did all the shades of blue for fun, although I do like the shade I eventually got, now I'm gonna figure out how to make it in fewer steps. I need to try and fix the image so you can see the real colors.

A lot of this was experimental, so I don't expect it to be very good.

And with the shoulder, I think the character is suppose to only have one shoulderpad on the one side, cause that's how it was on the pic I was referencing from.

Well, any sorts of shadows could certainly be possible. There might be other light sources, there could be mirrors/windows/other reflective surfaces, something could be blocking the light partially, etc. Some second and third opinions would be nice as I'm not exactly a pro at shading/lighting...
Here's a butchered version of your picture sorta depicting how I would've shaded it... I should've used a real art program rather than Paint.
User Image
Is the arm on the left the shoulder padded one? Makes better sense, then... maybe I'd have it a bit higher than I outlined, actually. The way the shoulders are lined up almost looks like a front view... which this might have been intended to be (not a straight up front view, but a slight turn). Anyhow... If it's supposed to be a bit more of a turned angle, then I'd have the arm on the left a bit closer to the body... I'm not entirely clear on the intended angle here, which I suppose is a problem in itself.

Moving along, I scribbled in some red and yellow around where I'd shade it, and darker grey on the hair.
