She did have to admit, some of the animals that came in here looked like they'd been created when a child had picked up random animal pieces and shoved them together.
There were cats with both their ears missing, making their heads look disproportionate. Rats with no toes on any feet, meaning they kept toppling over. Dogs in wheelchairs, hamsters with ADHD, heck, she'd even once seen a snake with a knot tied in it. Peyton saw everything in the animal shelter, and it wasn't all pretty. But they were all animals that needed her help, and the raven-haired girl was determined to do something about it! Currently she was cycling through the cat section, out back from the main reception, dumping a sachet of food into each of their food bowls. Some perked up, interested in the salmon-flavoured jelly that was dispensed into their bowls, whereas others remained huddled in the back corners, too shy or afraid to venture forwards while Peyton was still there.
She had a wide smile on her face - she enjoyed her volunteering. Wanting to study veterinary at college, not only would her volunteering give her valuable experience and look amazing on her application, but it made Peyton feel good about herself.
"Ugh, I'm so hungryyy..." the girl groaned softly to herself (or perhaps to the cats, who knew), the fact that she was giving the cats their food only being a reminder to her that she'd missed her own lunch. Ick.

Liliana stood in a kennel where the dogs where kept, her favorite cage in particular. It belonged to Eamon, a golden retriever with ragged ear that was missing half it's tail. She watched as Eamon wagged his half tail and looked up at her expectantly. They had just come in from a walk and now she need to feed him before she could feed herself.
Eamon sat waiting, seeming to know Lili's routine, while she removed his leash and bent to pet him. She turned exiting the kennel and locking it behind her though she knew Eamon would not follow.
Her footsteps could be heard as she made her way past the kennels and returned with food for the dogs. Most we're still of for their walks in the courtward, so Lili was saved from the yipping and jumping as she filled the empty food bowls starting with Eamon first, who barked in appreciation before settling in to his meal.
She moved quickly through the kennels making sure not to add to much or too little to a bowl and managed to finish is about five minute. Liliana sighed smiling widely as she heard a few other coming toward the kennels. She returned the dog food to storage and headed toward the bathroom so that she could wash up before having lunch.

Next stop, kennels.
Peyton grabbed the dog food from the storage, groaning softly to herself once more as a rumble of hunger ran through her own stomach. She pushed her way into the dog kennels, opening the first cage, bending down to pour in the biscuits...and was surprised to find it already filled. Frowning, she stood again, checking the next few kennels. All fully stocked with biscuits and water. How odd. She replaced the food in its cupboard, and did a walk down the aisle to ensure every kennel had food and no dogs would be going hungry. Nope, all were fine.
Excellent. With a triumphant 'yes!' to herself, Peyton turned a left, a new spring in her step at the concept of a break. It was late for lunch, but she didn't care, all she wanted was some food! She practically sprinted into the bathroom, diving towards the sinks and washing her hands with great enthusiasm - she didn't even notice the girl beside her.

Liliana looked up as another girl entered the bathroom. She smiled amused at the girl seemed to be washing her had quickly and much gusto.
"Hello," she said softly before drying her hands with a paper towel.
She turned to look at the girl with a curious expression, she could not help but wonder why the girl seemed in such a rush.
"Excuse me," she said softly. "I can't help, but to notice you a washing rather roughly. Did you happen to have kitty litter duty?"
She smiled lightly though she wanted to grimace. She wasn't to fond of kitty litter duty or being a pooper scooper. Neither were not fun jobs and Lili tried to avoid them, though it was not always possible. She would do what was asked of her, fore it was a perfectly reasonable request. It was an animal shelter after all.

Oh. Whoops.
She hadn't noticed this other girl. Grabbing a paper towel and drying her hands, Peyton offered a slightly awkward smile, feeling a little silly. She hoped the other girl didn't think she was ignoring her - oh no, that wouldn't do! And it seemed she'd noticed how...eager Peyton was to wash her hands. Spotting a chance to lighten the conversation, Peyton allowed herself to grin, shaking her head. "Nah, I'm just starving! I'm soooo hungry, you couldn't imagine!"
One thing Peyton was rather well known for was her constant emphasis of anything that was wrong. At the moment, her hunger. Clutching her stomach to add to the groaning, she chucked the paper towel in the bin, looking up to the girl once more. Geez, that was some awesome hair she had on her head. "I'm Peyton. Peyton Scott. You heading to lunch?"

Lili laughed lightly at the girls response, "I am hungry as well." She tossed her paper towel in the trash bin and started for the door when the other girl introduced herself.
Her hand on the door she pushed it open, "It is very nice to meet you Peyton. My name is Liliana Jacobs and yes I am headed to lunch."
Lili motioned to the door for Peyton to go first, "Care to join me?"
Lili was smiling as she loved meeting new people and making new friends. She was very surprised that they hadn't met before as most of the volunteers were on regular rotation at the shelter, having volunteered their very often.

Oh, she was hungry as well? ...Well, probably not as hungry as she was. Peyton smiled none-the-less, nodding to show she understood. She followed Liliana towards the door, following her out with a warm smile as an invitation was extended. "Oh, sure! Pretty name, too."
Peyton wasn't a common name - not compared to her brother's. Liliana was pretty, perhaps not as pretty as Lily, but that was always a reasonable nickname. Besides, it was the last name Peyton was interested in, her habit just happening. She didn't even think about it anymore. "You eating in the canteen, or got your own grub?"

"Thank you,' said Lily as Peyton complimented her name, "I like your name too. It is very unique. My mother name both my sister and I after flowers and a way. She always calls me Lily. You can call me Lily too, if you would prefer."
Lily continued on down the hall smiling lightly. When Peyton asked about her lunch she turned smile still in place. "I've brought my own lunch, though I was thinking of heading to the cafe down the street for lunch. I'm undecided, just yet."
Lily blushed slightly as her current indecisiveness. "What about you? Have you brought your own lunch or will you be eating in the canteen? The food in the canteen can be a bit greasy to me."
She laughed lightly enjoying the small talk and wondering how old Peyton was.

Peyton smiled at the compliment she was returned with. She nodded, but didn't comment on her name anymore. She didn't think her name was anything special, but it was nice to be told it was unique. As the conversation turned to nicknames, however, she couldn't help but grin. "Nah, I kinda have a habit of calling people by their last names. So I'd call you Jacobs."
Own lunch? Naaaah, Peyton loved the greasy canteen food. But as the cafe down the street was suggested, she gasped lightly, "Ohhh, I love that cafe. Usually I go to the canteen for lunch, but I treat myself occasionally with the cafe. How about we go over there?"

Lily frowned at Peyton's statement. She did not wish to be called by her last name and before she could think on her response she had responded.
"I'd rather you not," she said with a frown, making her disdain obvious and clear. "Please do call be Liliana or Lily. My last name is very much a boys first name."
Lily continued on her way down the hall not realizing her words had been harsh and rather rude. She smiled when Peyton said she would go to the cafe as well.
"That's great," she said her smile returning full force, "I just need to get some money out of my purse. It's in one on the volunteer locker. How about you? Do you have or you money already or will you have to go to the lockers as well."

Peyton's grin faded at Jacobs' Lily's obvious disdain, her expression becoming a little defensive. "Oh, okay then," she mumbled softly, feeling very much like she'd been told off by a teacher or something. Geez, what was up with this girl? It was just a habit she had, it wasn't anything harmful. Just a playful nickname, what did it matter if it was a boys name? People often called her Scott, to tease her back. She didn't care. Sighing, trying to shrug it off, she managed a considerably weaker smile.
"I've got my money already," she answered, jiggling her right hip so the tinkling of coins could be heard, "I'll wait here, if you want?"

Lily did notice Peyton slight change and frowned inwardly, but she did not apologize because she did not feel as though she was in the wrong. When she gave a smile Lily relaxed slightly hoping to forget the previous moment.
When Peyton said she had her money with her and offered to wait for Lily, she nodded thanking her and turned walking off for a moment before turning back. "I might be a while. I almost forgot I have to change my shoes. I will meet you at the door if that's okay with you, or even at the cafe if you like. You could get us a seat."
Lily waited a moment for Peyton's answers before nodding again and hurrying of towards the lockers. She had on her dog walking shoe, which she preferred to leave well within the confines of the animal shelter. She reached the lockers quickly, entering the combination to the lock on her locker and going about changing her shoes.

Peyton stopped, her smile growing a little wider as she nodded. Sounded like a sensible idea. "Okay - I'll meet you at the cafe, yeah?"
She watched Lily head towards the lockers, before turning herself. She clocked out, exitting the building and crossing the road, entering the cafe on the opposite side. She got into the line, quickly buying herself her lunch - a nice cheese toastie, with chips on the side. Certainly not healthy, but it was nice enough. She took a seat in the back corner, the comfy seats that were nicest.
Emptying a sachet of ketchup onto her plate, she dipped a chip in and took a bite. Time to wait.

Once Lily finished changing her shoe, into her more comfortable ballet flats, she grabbed her purse, and locked up her locker. She turned looking around to make sure she had every thing before she headed to the door, signed out and went across to the cafe.
'Five minutes', she thought looking at her watch as she enter the cafe. She looked around for a moment searching for Peyton, before she spotted her and waved.
She headed over to the line thanking the stars that it was short. She quickly purchased celery sticks with a side of cream, tea and a chicken sandwich, before heading over to Peyton and taking a seat.
"Hope I didn't take to long," she said smiling. "I use those shoes for dog walking duty often and even though I've cleaned them I prefer to leave them there."

Peyton had a couple more chips before digging into the toastie, having a quick munch on the decorative lettuce first before sinking her teeth in, savouring the taste. She spotted Lily entering the cafe and responded with a wave of her own, indicating the seat beside her that she'd been saving. After all, it was only courtesy to ensure she'd saved a comfy seat.
Peyton eyed Lily's considerably healthier lunch as the tanned girl sat down, smiling back as she quickly ate another chip, "Nah, you're fine," she assured, nodding as Lily explained her reason behind changing her shoes. It made sense - Peyton didn't care as much about her shoes, she wore the same ones for volunteering every week and didn't wear them for anything else. She could understand why others might wish to change, though. "Fair enough."
Now what?
