The frei got to the subway station early, but only a few minutes. Floating down the stairs to the actual platform, the kitten looked around, her ears perking for the soft voice. The Rose wasn’t there. But plenty of other people were. The platform was pretty crowded, except for one dark corner where the subway cars never reached. Usually the area contained drunks, homeless, and assholes pissing on the floor. For now, though, those people were occupying the bars that were still open. The walls were plastered with posters overlapping one another. The flickering light made it difficult to see the advertisements for bands, strip clubs, and comedy shows. The platform was only slightly warmer than the outside and as a subway car pulled in, the push of air swirled fallen bills and leaflets and the car pulled forward leaving the chasm of the tracks to her right.
The kitten was looking like any chick would for a fun night out on the town. Her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders. She was wearing her typical outfit, and goosebumps threatened to raise on her arms any time a breeze came through the station. Her makeup was heavy, and her lips were painted a bright red making her lips and eyes stand out against the pale color of her skin.
For once Brian was empty handed. The means would present itself eventually, he thought with a grin. He already knew how he wanted to have Lucia kill Vyn, all that left was executing that plan so Lucia knew how she was killing her friend. With a few bills stuffed in Lucia’s bra, Brian hoped to kill Vyn swiftly and then have fun on the town. He looked around the area he was floating in and smiled slightly. It was removed and dark enough that no one would be around to hear or see what the Kitten and the Rose were up to. It was secluded and dark and perfect, he thought as the car, filled with people, left the station leaving a mostly abandoned station. Slowly people were trickling in to wait for the next car.
Please don’t show up. Please don’t show up. Please let Ethan be a tight a**. Please let him keep her home. Pleasssseeee, Vyn, don’t show up! thought the frei desperately as she felt Brian’s initial adrenaline kick in.

Vyn pulled light black cardigan round her slightly tighter. The chilly night air was refreshing and was spurring her to move with brisk controlled speed towards her rendezvous spot with Lucia. Initially Ethan hadn’t showed much objection to her desire for a late evening stroll, but as she had collected her belongings – putting her phone, hand mirror and a small selection of makeup into her bag – he had begun to make small objections. “Just a quick walk round the block, yes?” She had brushed him off with nods of agreement, assuring him that she wouldn’t stay too far. Little guilt was summoned up by this blatant lying... She hadn’t seen Lucia since new years eve and she wasn’t going to have her stiff of a father protesting and preventing her from seeing the raevan who could quite possibly be classified as her best friend. For that reason she slipped out quietly and had walked round the block before ringing up a cab and riding to the subway station.
The location of their meeting was a little odd though. The station Lucia had chosen to meet at was rank – in the roughest possible area of Gambino and as she descended down the stairs to the platform where the trains rushed past, the scent of stale urine and unclean bodies met her. On the station walls there was graffiti – a large rude symbol was sprayed at one end and posters for all sorts of unsavoury looking events plastered some of the walls. Cage fighting? Questionable massage parlours.. Nothing Vyn could ever see herself visiting or taking interest in. Evidently several tramps also called this place their home. A few scraps of damp cardboard were like abandoned nests of the residents. Where were they now? Vyn didn't care, so long as they weren't here now. Wrinkling her nose she tightened her cardigan further still, suddenly aware of the shady figures that she might meet.
That mugger from the alleyway would sit comfortably in a setting like this... She gave a little shudder and her heart sped up as nerves set in. Was Lucia here? Because if not she had the urge to retreat back to the overground entrance and wait for her there... However, Vyn’s keen amber eyes picked out the cat-eared frei with ease and a smile relaxed her strained expression.
Waving a hand in greeting she gave an abrupt flap of her wings, drifting towards the other girl, smiling. She was pleased to see her, despite the poor environmental settings.
“Hello Lucia. Nice to see you.”

Brian was glancing at every body from the dark recess as each descended the stairs and waited on the platform for the train. As the large dark swirling ribbon came into view, Lucia’s purple eyes locked on the other frei. She was trying to be confident as the location’s drawbacks came to view. The necklace with its overlapping dark and silver chains was decorating Vyn’s neck and Lucia’s face broke into a smile as he saw it.
The flickering light overhead reinforced the nature of the place, Brian thought with a smile. As soon as the Rose frei saw the Kitten floating in the corner, she came over. This would be like taking candy from a baby, he thought, enjoying the cliché. ”Hi, Vyn.”
Lucia felt her heart beat a bit faster. The adrenaline that Brian’s excitement and anticipation brought felt familiar to the frei. And she didn’t like it. Why was the anticipation of attacking her friend something she had felt, and even reveled in before. This didn’t feel right. Lucia giggled slightly, a sob-like laughter bubbling from her lips. She reached over and hugged her friend in a hello and Brian used the opportunity to see how weak the Rose actually was. So this is your best friend, huh frei. Pathetic.
”I’m so glad you brought the necklace,” Lucia’s voice rung out as her eyes locked on the black and silver chains and dark pearls that decorated the long, pale, lace-covered neck of her friend.

For one who found most darkness a comfortable and familiar friend, Vyn was finding the shadowy recess that her companion had chosen to situate herself in an unpleasant place. The shade here was grimy almost, taking on the attributes of its scummy setting and once more the rose found that she was eager to get the meet and greet over with so that they could board the rattling train to a more... not sophisticated per say, but more just cleaner and more comfortable place than the slummy station they were currently residing in. Thus she fixed a smile onto her face, banishing her displeasure at the suspiciously used looking condom a few feet away, so that they could get the niceties done swiftly and proceed on their adventure into the night. “How are you Lucia? We haven’t seen each other in a while.”
Pausing, she noted that her friend wasn’t wearing much beyond her ‘birth’ attire, yet felt the need to give her usual greeting comment; “You look nice.” Gloom peeling away under the scruntiny of her good eyesight Vyn moved a hand to lightly point towards the locks of obsidian tumbling free, framing her friend’s expressions. “You’re wearing your hair down like mine..” Small talk came badly to the shadow... But in a place like this additional difficulty was almost to be expected.
Another spasm of flickering came from the tube light from down the platform announced the arrival of a train. Vyn glanced at the welcoming open doors and the enticing – albeit slightly worn – seats inside. If she could have her way they would be hopping on the carriage straight away... The platform not only smelt bad, but held bad vibes. Past experiences led her not to trust such places... But Lucia was making no move towards the transport so Vyn swallowed her slight nervousness. Lucia was by far the more streetwise of the two of them. With her the rose would be fine and the next train would be here not too long after this one had left. Patience was a virtue and the politeness of not scarpering from her friend’s chosen location was also a good thing.
On the mention of the necklace Vyn’s hand went up to clasp the embellished chain around her neck. With a rushed smile she nodded, pleased that her friend still took pleasure in the exchange of their original token of friendship. They didn’t see each other on a day to day basic and having the glittering black charm around her neck meant that she could be reminded of the feline even if they hadn’t made physical contact in quite some time. Almost heading straight to fumble with the clasp she asked the other frei, “You want it back now?” With a smile to show it was no hassle she added, “It’s your turn.”

”Yeah, I figured we’d match when out on the town!” he replied enthusiastically to her compliment. With Vyn, he watched the platform as the train arrived and left. While Vyn saw the car with longing, wanting to get out of the shadows and into the relative security of the train, the Cat saw it with eagerness. The platform cleared of people as everyone boarded the train. Everyone, from the hooker who had been standing down the platform glaring at the girls to the drug dealer eyeing up the girls who were suspicious, but looked clean, to the business man who kept his head down the whole time, looking at his PDA and blocking out the world, everyone piled on the train they had been waiting for.
They were alone. Perfect.
As Vyn began to unclasp the necklace, Lucia smiled broadly. ”Let me get it!” he said happily. Her eyes were sharp as she floated around to her friend’s back. Her smile descended into a sneer as she pulled the metal chains against the Rose’s neck. Her fingers worked, a bit more clumsy than normal, and she opened the clasp. Quickly, without letting go she twisted the ends of the necklace around her fingers and pulled the metal tight against her friend’s throat.
The broad smile that was on her face quickly resurfaced and twisted into a deranged expression as the Kitten choked her friend with their necklace.

Vyn’s hands fell away from the clasp as her friend moved in to offer her assistance. Her companion hadn’t really responded to the attempt at chit chat (asking how she had been), though Lucia had spoken with enthusiasm in response to a subsequent mention so Vyn shrugged it off with a smile. Perhaps the cat was just too excited for such boring and menial conversation: judging by the broad smile and enthusiastic body posture that theory certainly was a possibility. Without any trace of suspicion the rose allowed her friend to float behind her, dark eyes now more relaxed after the exuberance of the cat had washed over her and the promise of a good night on the town was just the next train arrival away!
When the chain around her pale throat tightened she didn’t even suspect foul play. Lucia was simply having a little difficulty in undoing the clasp and had somehow managed to tug the accessory too tight. It was an easy mistake to make... Though didn’t the cat realise that it was hurting her? Frowning she coughed and moved one of her delicate hands up to tug at the chain and make a comment. However, even though she wanted to speak in protest to the rough treatment she found it impossible.
She was being choked? Wriggling she bent her head backwards, a slight trace of panic in her eyes. Lucia didn’t mean to be doing this – it was a horrible mistake... Maybe if she caught her eye she could get her to stop before..? Well, she was getting light headed already... “L-eugh-uci-agh..” She choked, twisting her arm she pawed at the hands at her necklace... They were awfully tight- both tightly curled into the chain. They didn’t seem to be finding the clasp?
Something was wrong... Why wasn’t her friend letting go. It was almost as though she was doing this on purpose. That couldn’t be though! Her dark eyes pleaded for the girl to prove otherwise.

The frei’s eyes went wide as she pulled harder with the chain. The smile on her face broadened and her fingers felt the pull of the metal chain dig into the Rose’s soft flesh.
It was fitting, Brian thought, that Lucia kill her best friend with their special jewelry. So many things could be weapons, he thought with a light laugh. Of course the laugh translated into the sob-like giggle that was escaping the Cat’s lips so often lately.
Please stop! she begged for the first time in a few days. Please don’t do this! Let her go! Let ME go! But there was nothing Lucia could do and she knew it. With every attack, with every brutalization, with every murder, she was realizing that she wasn’t someone who could have friends. She was too close to Brian in nature. He wanted the thrill. He wanted to anticipation. He wanted the adrenaline. Her drives weren’t much different; she just didn’t kill for them.
The kitten just smiled and pulled the chain harder against Vyn’s neck, forcing the Rose to lean back.

Her flexed position, head tilted forcibly back, allowed her to catch a glance at the manic joy written across the cat’s face. What was happening? Confusion and pain bit at Vyn’s emotions and the first tear budded in her eye. When the cackle of cruel laughter began it rolled guiltily down her cheek. What had she done to deserve such treatment from her companion? The rose knew that Lucia had a different sense of humour and personality to her; harder, slightly more sarcastic; But sadistic to this level? Definitely not!
Coughing, which produced a painful jarring as the chain attempted to slice into her windpipe, she wriggled – wrestling with the bond that the other frei was holding her by. This necklace was a tribute to their almost instantaneous friendship... Now it was being used to choke her... This must be her fault somehow – she had gone wrong somewhere along the line and as she struggled physically against the chokehold her mind grappled with memories trying to find the source of her punishment. Nothing came to mind and she was just getting weaker. The oxygen that she required was running thin... Aching pain was spreading across her half-formed chest and the tips of her limbs felt numb and without life as she fumbled with the chain.
She was going to die... Did Lucia want that? Had she really done something heinous enough to deserve this? She wanted to ask; cry out; weep for an answer to this question... But evidently that was not possible. She was going to perish in silence for a crime that she had no idea that she committed.
However, her body wasn’t going to let her slip out as quietly... Her increased heartbeat, struggling figure, kick of do-or-die adrenalin was having a now familiar effect. Red light flared from her rune was contorting and casting deadly shadows across the dim grimy floor of the platform. Her eyes widend as she quite literally felt the magic inside her unlock and begin seeping out. With desperation Vyn remembered desperately her lessons with Lazarus and the practicing sessions she had done at home. Control it – assert authority over it or all hell would break lose. She didn’t want to hurt Lucia... That drew a further tear... Should she hurt Lucia? After all...
No matter what she was thinking the shadows were now coiling from their slumber. Barbed hooks waved through the air, sluggishly at first but then with the voracity and hiss of an angered snake. Their creator, master of sorts, was in danger and they had been summoned from previous indifference to animation to protect her.
Vyn’s eyes were now had a pained sorrowful glaze, she was nearing the end of her feeble lung’s capacity. Ready, almost, to slip into unconsciousness. As a whip-like crack signalled the first strike against Lucia she closed them, somehow hoping that this would all end and that it would be a mistake, or a dream – or rather some terrible nightmare... Unfortunately her desires could not be realised and the agony of their once fond relationship did not remove itself from her neck... Lucia really did hate her now.

The shadow whip lashed out, striking Lucia’s arm leaving an angry red welt on her arm. ”What the hell?!” cried out the Kitten as her arm jerked back, strangling the Rose frei before her further.
Then Lucia found her hands and body pulling back as the links of the necklace weakened, opened and broke leaving the frei falling back against the wall as the tension she was using to hold herself up. Grasped in each of her fists were the chains that remained of the beloved shared necklace.
A few links tinkled on the floor as the necklace ripped into two pieces.
The frei didn’t know if she should be devastated at the broken connection between her and her friend overjoyed that Vyn had a chance to get away. RUN VYN! she wanted to cry out. Her thoughts were drowned out at the next subway car rolled up to the stop and the doors opened.

The tinkering of metal against the grimy floor was barely heard by Vyn. Her whole existence was centred on the sudden absence of tension around her pale throat. For a handful of milliseconds she relished the greedy rush of air that she consumed as she lurched forwards out of the other murderous raevan’s grasp.
All the collected straining against her bonds released the rose forwards with quite some force and she had to extend her arms promptly to prevent her face from meeting the concrete station. Instinctively her limbs shot out and her hands slammed into the rough dirty surface, her skin was instant ground up to a gritty mess. However, despite the jarring impact that ran along her arms she did not pause to collect herself and pushed through the pain –throbbing in her head, cutting at her neck and screaming at her palms. Gasping for more oxygen she scrambled away, the shadows flaying urgently behind her as she put distance between herself and Lucia.
Her mind could still not construct a good reason for this situation, all she knew was that she had to get away and if she did not take this golden opportunity given to her by the symbol of what Vyn had thought to be their strong relationship, she would be pinned again and ruthlessly destroyed. The train’s doors were open and the interior was basically empty. Someone was slumped half asleep and a scruffy looking man was poring over a crumpled newspaper. Even if Lucia managed to follow her inside the cat would have more on her plate to deal with; even so, the Vyn funnelled her efforts into keeping the animated shadows writhing and striking threatening at her assailant. The surprisingly strong girl could probably pull her way through them but not without suffering a bruising and some nasty cuts and hopefully by that time the train would be leaving...
Staggering, or as close as a floating torso can get to staggering, onto the train Vyn clung to one of the supports. The occupants of the carriage barely batted an eyelid at her... Concerned she glanced out of the scratched window back towards the gloomy corner. For some reason, despite the abuse she had just suffered, she was worried for her companion. The shadowy strikes could be nasty.... The hiss of the doors going to close made it safe for Vyn to shuffle towards the window and press her face to it. Now she was safe her hold on her powers was released and the almost solid gloom convulsing in the corner faded away to indifferent shade. Was Lucia still there? She squinted, heart in her mouth...
Pained and confused as the lights flickered and the train pulled away Vyn mouthed a sorrowful message. “I’m sorry Lucia...”

The kitten frei let out an angry scream as she fell backwards and the Rose zipped away. That was the second frei who got away from her. It wouldn’t happen again. Falling against a shadowed area, the barbed whips continued striking her body leaving angry welts and small holes in her body. She was ignoring the pain of the shadows attacking her as she tried to sprint forward.
Suddenly a shadow sprung out and wrapped around her wrist holding her at an arms length from it. The frei’s wings flapped hard, a hard sneer twisted her features as she pulled against the shadow keeping her from getting to the train.
The doors closed, and as quickly as she was held in place, she was released. She floated over to the last window and saw Vyn staring through it. The train started to roll. Slamming her fist into the window, she floated back. The window vibrated with the impact, but if it cracked or not, the frei didn’t know.
And inside she was elated that Vyn got away. And devastated that she was so much like her possessor.
