I know this is probably the last place I should go to for advice as important as this, but I have nobody else to ask, so here goes.

I'm a sophomore in art college. In order to get my grandparents to allow me to go to art college (they cosign my loans), I agreed to doing an art ed program. I hate children with a passion. So I've been taking the required classes and the teacher and department head approach me and tell me that I need to withdraw because I haven't gotten my observation docs in on time and I shouldn't be in the program if my heart isn't in it. So I had to withdraw from the program. What do I do? When my grandparents find out, they'll take me out of this school. If I try to do things on my own, I'd need to start paying back $40,000 worth of loans or find a new cosigner. My parents do not support me.

I know that I've basically screwed myself over. I'm not looking for people to scold me. Trust me, I've got plenty of that already. Can anyone help me think of a solution? I feel very trapped. Please help.

Is it possible to take art ed but to focus more on older people? Maybe teens and adults?

Are you interested in working with the elderly or developmentally disabled people? Is there an art therapy program you could get into? Maybe your grandparents would go for that instead.

Is there anything else you're into that they might go for? Art history maybe?

If you're really not into that stuff, and you can't find anything else they'd go for, you might just have to be honest. Let them know that you do want to go to school and you want to do well in school. But you want to take something you're interested in. After all, you'll be studying it for years and probably working in a field that pertains to it. So it's sort of a personal choice, not something someone else can pick for you.

If they're just worried about whether you'll be able to get a good job, talk to them about the options for people with art degrees. Look through the classifieds and see if there are any jobs for people with art degrees in your area.

I've tried pretty damned hard to convince them to let me minor in art history or even creative writing but they have refused. I really don't understand it. I wish there was a way to dodge the loans.

My philosophy on college is simple, "Go only if you don't have to pay anything back, don't go if you'll have to pay something back. If family or society encourages o r wants you to go to college, then they need to help out too"

Hmm. Have you already checked to see if you qualify for any financial aid? Have you talked to anyone from the school? They might have some good financial tips for you.
