The night was still fresh, the moon had not yet rose into the sky. The wind blew threw the fields near a stream. The breeze still had the child of winter but promised spring was getting close. The slow sound of the creak as it moved over rocks in its way added to the song of the wind. Fire flies, normally not out at this time of ear, flickered hear and there across the open fields and around the edges of randomly placed trees.

At first there was not sound other than the hum of the wind, and the bubble of the creak. But soon the faint sound of tap tap thunk tap started to join the night. The pattern repeated, always tap tap thunk tap, tap tap thunk tap. The sound was evenly paced and as the moon started to rise and light the field with its hazy light the figure of a adult female Xio could be seen by the creak. Her movement was uneven due to a limp she seemed to have. In the dim light of the moon her patterned coat could be just barely hinted at though the colors were shades of shadows. Her near black eyes caught the moon as she lowered her head to drink from the creak. The tap tap thunk tap of her walk ceasing for the time being, only to be replaced my her lapping of the water.

A hulking shadow-stained, bleached-bone shape wandered with eerie lethargy through long, winter oppressed grasses. Individual strands of foliage slithered sickly over dark, wet paws, moisture glistening weakly on grass and fur in the moonlight. The creature's pace was slow but not leisurely, a deathly aura thickening the chilly air around him.

Fireflies that seemed greener than normal darted about, fluttering and tumbling through the air in his wake. Their glow teased along his pale fur, glinted off his dirty bone helm, and shone brightly in his yellow-green eyes. It was as if fireflies had taken up residence in his skull and peeked out of the sockets.

Every now and then tiny giggles could be heard dancing in the air. Obviously it issued not from the xio. Perhaps it came from the insects? Something larger than the rest broke away and landed on the space between his ears. His skull seemed caught with green flames as the tiny form of a female libleyt sat down comfortably, fearlessly.

The Xio's ears perked. He had heard the abnormal gait of another xio but had paid no mind until it became obvious to them both that their destination was the same. He stopped and watched this new xio for the longest time. Without his companions' glow and his corpse-like pallor so very out of place these lush green surroundings, he might have melted into the scenery. The fact remained that he had become almost like a statue, as if movement and even breathing were unnecessary to him.

The creature on his head lightly slapped the bone beneath her tiny hand. It was a sign to move forward.

Only then did he approach the water, coming to a stop downstream from the female xio and drinking his fill. No matter what direction they faced, one would seem to have been watched by the huge beast, though that was not necessarily the case; he simply had no apparent pupil to focus with.

The heavy foot falls of someone drawing near did not miss the tortuous pattern ears of the female Xio. Nor did the faint sounds of the fireflies that buzzed loudly as they were brushed aside. Slowly with her long ears lower back so the lay straight against her neck the grass colored female looked up from the water. She saw the frozen form of a large male Xio. His body was huge even for a male. It smelt of blood but from the ways 'fireflies' seemed to flock around him it seemed that it was nothing more than a statue. After all there was a large bright firefly atop his large dirty skull and two smaller ones glowing within the 'carved eyes".

The female could not help but wonder how they got inside. She shifted her weight as she faced the frozen male. As she moved her left her head was pulled down towards the ground a bit as her left front leg found footing. A dark form of what looked to be matted fur ran from what could be seen of her neck down the leg.

As her dark eyes scanned over the bloody statue her tail lowered. In a strange way she enjoyed the site of fireflies around such a pale form. She slowly moved her right front leg forward and was going to take a closer look at the statue when it moved forward toward the water. The female stepped back quickly. The movement caused a wet sounding quickly silenced breath to escape her. The movement also allowed water to flick off the fangs of the skull upon her own head. So the solum figure was alive...and not doomed to be the love of fireflies. Then the dirty smell of blood and mud was from the male as well.

Confusion and fear were a sweet perfume to the pale xio. Terror and revulsion likewise... but that could come later. Her uncertainty brought a grimacing smile to his stained lips as his glowing eyes rolled around in his head. All of this was probably lost under the rictus of his skull. Ah, well.

The tiny katorai rapped on his bony crown with her knuckles and swept down over the water's surface. Her image reflected back up at her like a cellophane doppelganger. Fireflies followed and in the very dim light something about her seemed to grow as her limbs grazed the water, but it was probably a trick of shadow.

Unfettered by the other's influence with even this short distance between them, the xio's attention began to wander, and with it his feet. Two slow steps toward the female xio, as if made by one asleep or the animated dead. There was something bizarre about her. Her gait was strange. There was something in her fur... Was she as strange as they were? How beautiful would her mottled form be covered in bloo--

His thoughts were interrupted by a hissing in his ear: No playing. No blood. No maiming. No death. She all but grabbed him by the lobe and dragged him back. And in a way, she did.

Vestigial wings shivered, excitement quelled. Fiercely glowing eyes seemed to dim just a little as his gaze turned away. A hollow, almost dry-bone rattle escaped his deep chest as he exhaled a deep sigh. It was a patient, if disappointed sound. But there was no upset in his countenance. He returned to the water. Well... the water was especially sweet here. That was nice at least.

Adjusting her feet the female Xio started to breath easier. She watched the larger firefly. As she watched it moving. She could see that it was not a firefly. But it was a Katorai. She turned her head carefully to watch the small Katorai flick and glide over the water. She was in so much awe at seeing one so small that she did not notice the large male had gotten closer to her. But as the small Katorai moved to stop him. The dark eyes moved to look at the glowing ones of the white and blood male. She felt confusion and interest rise within her gut as she caught a glimpse of something glowing darkly within those firefly eyes. She tilted her head the other way confused at what she saw.

As the large male bent back down to the water, the female ventured a bit closer. What was it that was in his eyes. She have never seen something like that. She looked down at the ground and walked a bit closer with her tap tap thunk tap. She picked up her right paw a bit as she leaned her head in just a bit to look at the small Katorai. She was beautiful…and she had such a strong looking Xio.

Hearing the telltale footsteps of the female xio, the male abruptly abandoned the water. Unseen, stained droplets of fell into the stream, corrupting the water around them.

Unsettled from her place beside her companion's head, the glowing black katorai flitted toward the other xio with a mixture of curiosity and rebuff. She hovered near the female xio's eye, adopting a rigid, authoritarian pose. The effect would be stronger this close to the other, despite her diminutive size. "You should stay away from us."

Behind her, the male shook the water from his face then stood with his head held high and a faint, amused smirk. Perhaps this was the first hint he had offered that he had a will of his own. But he was not sure which idea he liked more, that his mate might scare something so big away, or that he might have something to play with and terrorize later.

As if issued from the stream bed itself, his voice trickled out over the space that separated them. It had that same dry-bone quality to it and it was laced with irony. "Perhaps she would like to die. Would you deny her that wish?"

The tiny libleyt glared daggers over her shoulder at her companion. Of course most people don't want to die, his suggestion was ridiculous yet it carried with it so much danger. She knew that he would be happy to oblige. She returned her gaze to the stranger and gave her final warning. Anything else was up to this xio to decide. "You should really just avoid us."

At the harsh words from the small Katorai the tortoise shelled ears fell back against the neck of the female Xio. She bowed her head slightly. She was a Xio after all and she knew her place when it came to Katorai. "I am sorry miss..." she said. Her voice was soft and strained, as if the wind of her voice was forcing itself threw a small hole. She was about to speak again with the larger male Xio voice sounded. This cause her to step back slowly another of her cut off gasps sounding before her legs shifted and she looked up at the male. "I would like nothing Xio...and today is not a day I should die...though tomorrow I might or even before the sun rise. What ever happens does in fact happen. I do not play to know my fate." she spoke more plainly to him in her distant strained voice. It did not show much power or strength. For like many wild Xio she had not found a Katorai to guard. No did she wish to be free and wild so she had no reason to be fierce or strong.

She turned to the Katorai and bowed her head again, "I am sorry miss...I have never known a Katorai to glow or fly...I was curious..." she bowed her head even lower, as she did so the 'matted fur' hanging from her neck fell forward. It was thicker than fur and if the glowing Katorai drew closer she would find that the hair was acutally thick rope that was tied in a hangman's nose around the female's neck.

The katorai tilted her head slightly at the xio's fatalistic reply, but such is the way of most xio. They are ever patient for their masters and ready to live or die at another's whim. "I glow because I was blessed by the light of Gnome; my companion has been touched by Shade. His way is strange but he will not harm you if I forbid it."

Her words were affirmed by a soft groan behind her, and the sound of his bulk slowly slipping to the ground in disappointment.

She had heard a peculiar strain in the female xio's voice that renewed her curiosity. Then she recalled the equally strained gait and glanced down for a moment before investigating. This creature's way was not to harm a katorai, so she had no reason to worry. The natural glow that followed her saw fit to light her way as her tiny hand marked her passage down the creature's neck, as one might do with a horse. What greeted her was a strange sight indeed. "Is this a rope? Who would fetter you in such a cruel way?" She frowned as she tugged at the twined strands, realizing that she may be unable to untie them on her own.

The pale xio glanced back up inquiringly. He had never actually dropped his gaze but now he rose back to his feet and padded over. His head was lowered like a wolf but his tail waved high over his shoulders as he approached. Sniffing the air around her neck he caught the familiar tang of blood where it had rubbed the skin beneath her thick fur raw.

The female Xio shook her head slowly and carefully. "I do not fear any who are blessed. They are lucky to have been graced with a gift. Your glow is very bright and elegant miss. It is warming to the heart." she said gently though took another hindered step back as the Katorai drew near. She was not used to another being so close. And though the Katorai were what her kind were created to protect she still felt a hint of worry.

How ever as the small Katorai touched her the female movements ended and she allowed the small hand to run down her neck. She had to admit that the touch was welcomed. But she did not say anything. The rope was very strong and thick its corse fibers did not give in the slightest to the tug of the firefly Katorai. "Am I fettered? I had not noticed. But there is no reason to fret miss. If I am that is how I am to be is it not?" She tilted her head slightly to the side as the male drew nearer.

Her body tensed as his hulking form moved to sniff at her neck. She tensed not really out of fear. She tensed because the rope bit deeper into both her wrist and her neck as she shifted causing the scent of blood to increase and because she knew she was close to this male's Katorai and she was not ready nor wanting of a fight. She shifted forward with a tha thunk gasp. So both of the others would be more along her back then at her neck. and she shifted her head down and around to look at them. The movement loosened the ropes so she could face them better and more freely.

Being this close to the large male she could smell the scents of both fresh and old blood. She could not tell whom the blood was from and though the fire fly Katorai fragrance demanded the Xio to be calmer she felt both interested in and jealous of the large male. His glowing eyes matched his katorai his manners and her's were so matched. The Katorai was right, this forest colored Xio had not right to be near the pair.

(I just saw "fan" arts of Aderlass and Mitsume in your sig Dooma. So sweet. <3 )

"Yes, fetter. What I mean is that it looks like someone tied you with a rope in such a way that you would have trouble walking. Is this true? Who did this to you? Would you like us to remove it?" Of course, since she could not do it on her own, she would have to ask her companion to do it...

Perhaps she wants it to remain in place, or perhaps she has a master that forbids it. That was the male xio's thought, though he was not interested in contradicting her all the time. Just sometimes.

Instead, he focused his interest in how this female xio was shrinking away at their approach. Perhaps it was merely the rope getting in the way, but just a moment ago she had seemed so interested, or at least curious...

He cocked his head, the beginnings of another grin on his face. He had been about to tease the female xio when something registered. "Oh. By 'we' you mean I would be removing it."

The katorai nodded. "The rope is very thick. But I'm worried that it will only injure her further if it is not removed..." The green xio had moved forward. She fluttered so that she was once again at eye level. "If you are not being punished for wrongdoing, there is no just reason for you to suffer in this way."

(Aww thank you, Kipe drew it for me, I know Adderlass was really wanting to try and make Mitsune his alone lol.)

The worry of the Katorai confused her. No one had ever worried about her. She looked over the fluttering firefly Katorai. "I have no one miss...no one is punishing me..." Her tail flicked slowly behind her. She had not idea what it was that was making both of them so suddenly interested in her.

"I was unaware I was suffering miss. I am just living as I always have." She turned her head to look at the large male the movement making the rope loosen a bit, "No offense Xio but I would not want you to take anything of mine." She then turned her head back to the Katorai the rope synching slightly. "I do not know what rope you are talking about miss. I am and have always been how you see me." Her hears lowered slightly, "I am sorry if I disappoint you. I thank you for your concern. Keeping her head down she shifted her paws to face the two strangers and this time her paws made a tap tap tap tap nose the rope not tugging with her movements.

( I miss that shop so much... ;.; <3 )

The male xio sighed softly, a wheezing rattle fluttering around in his chest. She is made to suffer. The look he gave to the female katorai reflected these thoughts accompanied by a frown that said, leave her be.

It was not that he wanted to, of course. The feeling his realization brought a mixture of disappointment - pity - and some of what he was feeling before. But she was what she was, she knew nothing else, and that really took the heart out of his interest.

But she was not paying him mind at the moment. She was perplexed, reached for the rope. "This--" She yelped in surprise as the xio snapped her out of the air by the tail.

It was a surprisingly gentle gesture for one so huge in comparison. He was used to handling her softly just as she could direct him with a flick of her wrist or an arch of her brow. He let her go and she dropped only a half inch before taking control of the air beneath her wings. As the female glared at her companion he said, "She does not want it removed. She is not even aware of it."

The katorai grumbled but thought it through. If the female xio became aware of her situation, perhaps she would become upset, or worse. Finally realizing what he had been trying to say, she sighed and nodded.

To her, she knew that this was not against his personality. He did not actually want her to suffer just to watch her writhe in pain, his motives were a little more complicated than that. He was not the sort, for example, to tear the wings from a butterfly when he was bored. He liked pain as a sort of a game, as best she could understand it. And for it to be a game, both parties had to be aware, and understand, and then suffer for the sake of suffering... Sometimes she was glad that they were incompatible in certain ways.

(I miss it a lot too! But we have new shops to play with heart )

Even though the female Xio knew that the two in front of her were bounded she could not help but feel her body tense and a warning growl slip from under her skull as the larger male tugged the Katorai away. It seemed that this female's need to protect something was rather heightened or maybe it was simply her envy of the male Xio having someone to guard that tipped her scale.

She took a step forward. But just as quickly as it had began she stopped and lowered her head a bit. Though her eyes still held a bit of anger toward the male. "You look at me in disgust. Do I let you down Xio?" Her body was tense as she flicked her left front leg a bit the rope sliding up it a bit and freeing her neck just incase he wanted to fight. "My body is what you see. I have not right to complain. Just as your tattered hide is what it is." she turned to glance at the Katorai, "He did not hurt you did he miss?"

The male hissed in surprise to her aggressive advance. In hindsight perhaps he should not have been, as his sudden movement could have been interpreted as dangerous. Flattening his ears and baring his teeth no doubt appeared more menacing than it was meant to be; but it was a brief reaction on his part as his intention was not to cause a fight. His aggressions had been aimed somewhere else entirely.

"I admit I am disappointed, but the fault is my own for perceiving a figment of fancy." Teeth flashed again in the dull moonlight, this time a grimacing smile as he adopted an almost pouty manner and nudged his tiny companion so very gently with his nose.

The result was that she seemed to lightly bounce once in midair. She glanced back at the large xio and patted his muzzle before turning back to the female. "No, he would never harm me. I was just surprised."

She continued, "Your appearance confused us both at first. I can speak for him as well when I say that we thought you were in danger or that harm had come to you, but perhaps we were wrong. Please forgive the misunderstanding." No doubt his apparent (and truly) gleeful reaction to the other xio's injury was confusing, but she really had no way to explain it. It was hard enough for her to understand it herself!
