Hello, and welcome to the IV Guide!
So, let's get started with a little Q&A, shall we?

Q: What exactly are IVs?
A: IVs (shortened from Individual Values) are invisible points that every Pokemon has in its stats (HP, Attack [Atk], Defense [Def], Special Attack [SpAtk], Special Defense [SpDef], and Speed [Spd]), ranging from 0 to 31.

Q: What do they do?
A: IVs help to diversify one Pokemon from the next. Say, for example, you catch two Pidgey, both at level 10, both male, both with a Docile nature. They're the same, right? Upon further investigation of their status screens, you notice the second Pidgey has a point or two more HP than the first one. This means that second Pidgey probably has more HP IVs.

Q: When are IVs determined?
A: IVs are determined upon meeting, whether that be by catching the Pokemon in the wild or hatching it from an Egg.

Q: How do I check IVs?
A: We'll discuss this later in the guide, but there is a handy way to check (somewhat) in Platinum Version. In the Battle Tower in the Battle Frontier, there's an old man who'll check your Pokemon and give you a rating based on their IVs, ranging from average, above average, etc. He'll also tell you which stat has the highest IV. However, his notes are very vauge.

Q: So wait...what do IVs do again?
A: Being more specific, IVs add on extra points to your Pokemon's stats (just like EVs). For example (just pulling numbers out of the air here), let's say my Flygon, after EV training and with a beneficial nature, has 300 Atk. With a 31 (max) in Atk, he'd have 331; if he had a 30, 330, and so on down to if he had 0, 300 (I'm fairly certain there's more math involved than this; I was merely making an example in simple terms). In short, the better your IVs, the more extra points you get!

Q: Is there some complicated math involved in this?
A: There is, but I won't even attempt to fail to explain it to you. If you'd really like to see it, you can check out Serebii's confusing explanation

Q: Can I affect IVs?
A: Why, soitenly! And that's where we'll begin.

Getting Ready
For the purposes of this guide, we're going to be breeding a Modest Eevee (I'm going to assume you know about the benefits of having a beneficial nature). Everyone likes Eevees, right?

To do this, we're going to need a few things, and they are:
  • A Modest-natured Female Eevee OR a Modest-natured Ditto [NOTE: If you're going the Female Eevee route, the Everstone trick WILL NOT WORK if you're breeding it with a Ditto as the FATHER; pick something in Eevee's Egg Group to make it work]
  • One Everstone
  • The Daycare
  • A Pokemon with Flame Body or Magma Armor ability (more on that in a second)

The Daycare can be found in Solaceon in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum and outside of Goldenrod City on Route 34 in Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

For this demonstration, we're using a Male Eevee of a differing nature and a Modest-natured Ditto. Before depositing both in the Daycare, we're going to attach the Everstone to Ditto. Once this is done, stick them in the Daycare and let the fun begin!

Waiting for Eggs
While we're waiting for an Egg to pop out, let's get ready for hatching. First things first is to empty all your Pokemon into your box except for one, and this particular one needs to be something that has the Flame Body or Magma Armor ability. These are:
  • Magby->Magmar->Magmortar
  • Slugma->Magcargo
  • Camerupt

For this demonstration, our lucky candidate is Slugma.

Next, hop on your bike, and let's go for a ride.

In Solaceon, there's a straight path that runs from Route 209 below all the way through the town and up into Route 210 (right next to Cafe). I'm fairly certain this path was put in by the game developers for breeders. Basically, you can run this path back and forth to not only wait for Eggs but also to hatch them, picking up more as you go along.

HGSS has no such path, but I generally ride from the Daycare, up through Goldenrod, and to the gate leading to Route 35 (and back again).

You'll be able to tell there's an Egg ready through a number of ways. First is that the old man standing outside the Daycare will turn from his usual front-facing position to a side-facing one. The second depends upon which game your playing. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, you can check the Daycare Checker App on your Poketch (should be number 09). Leave it at the bottom, and tap it every now and again. When a little Egg icon appears between your two Pokemon, you've got an Egg! In Heart Gold and Soul Silver, there is no Poketch, but you do have a PokeGear, and the kind old Daycare Man will call you every time you have a new Egg to pick up (which is kind of annoying, personally, but....moving on).

You Got an Egg! Now Let's Hatch It!
With our Egg in tow, we're going to ride along our Breeder's Path, collecting any Eggs that pop up along the way, until our party is full of our Slugma and 5 Eggs.

Now, Flame Body/Magma Armor is a nice little ability that has an Overworld effect. It helps to hatch Eggs faster! This only works on the Egg right next to it in your party, though. So, for example, if our party looks like this:
x=Slugma
o=Egg
xo
oo
oo
Then this Egg will have it's required steps halved:
xo<--
oo
oo

After listening to that lecture, it seems your Egg has hatched! Don't just sit there, check out its status screen!

Status Screen Clues
Your Pokemon's Status screen can give you hints as to what your highest IV is in the form of Pokemon Characteristics. These are listed on the same screen the Nature and obtainment information. I'll list what each one stands for tiny below, as it's not super important; just a small clue/nicety.
HP
Loves to eat.
Takes naps a lot.
Daydreams a lot.
Untidy.
Loves to relax.
Atk
Proud of its strength.
Loves to thrash around.
Short tempered.
Loves to fight.
Hot blooded.
Defense
Strong
Tolerant
Tenacious
Patient
Enduring
SpAtk
Highly curious.
Mischievous.
Shrewd.
Pondering.
Very Organized.
SpDef
Obstinate
Vain.
Competitive.
Hates to lose.
Stubborn.
Spd
Loves to race.
Sensitive to sound.
Spaz
Clown
Runs away fast.

Credit for these goes to the Diamond and Pearl Prima Guide.
If yours says something different from above, look at the overlying theme of the Characteristic and see which one it fits into. If you're still not sure, don't worry about it; it's not really that important.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat
That Egg we hatched, what Nature was it? Let's say it was Jolly. This, of course, is not the Nature we want. I think it's time we explained what the Everstone trick does.
  • When you attach an Everstone to a Female Pokemon or a Ditto, there's a 50% chance that the Nature of said Pokemon will be passed on to its offspring.

Since this one is Jolly, it falls into the 50% where the nature didn't pass. There are a few things you can do with it.
  • Put it in a box to deal with later
  • Send it to My Pokemon Ranch on your Wii (best option, imo)
  • Release it into the wild (what a waste!)

What you do with him is ultimately your decision.

Keep hatching Eggs until you get at least 6 Modest-natured Eevees (it's best to set them aside in an empty box). When I IV breed, I generally number them from 01 to however high I eventually get; I'll then change it's name afterwards when I get the one I want. If you don't want to do this, though, you don't have to; it just makes it easier to tell them apart.

With 6 Eevees in your party, it's time to check their IVs!

Q: So now are you going to tell me how to check IVs?
A: Why yes, yes I am.

There are two ways to check IVs, but both of them require one thing, and that's an online IV Calculator. Everyone has one they prefer (I personally like the one at Veekun), and all you need to do to find one is type "Pokemon IV Calculator" into a search engine and pick one. Try a few out, see which one you like best.

Special aside: You could always try and calculate it out yourself with the formula, but...that's just a lot of unnecessary effort, don't you think?

Having selected our IV Calculator, we're now ready to select our method.

Method 1: The (Haxy) Hard Way
If you happen to have 99 Rare Candies lying around, you can feed them to your Eevee until it's level 100, input its stats into the Calculator, and then reload to before you fed them to your Eeevee. This is a very round-about way of doing it, and I don't suggest doing it, but you're more than welcome to, if you really want to.

Method 2: The (Friend Requiring) Easy Way
Easiest route to take is to have an IV battle. What this requires is a Wi-Fi match with the level set at 100. If you happen to have two DSes lying around and two versions of the games, you can have an IV battle with yourself. If you lack such things, ask in the forums for an IV battle until someone politely obliges you.

If you're IV battling with someone else...
  • Be courteous. Don't spend any unnecessary time drawing out the length of the battle. Write down your stats and when you're both ready, disconnect.
  • Be patient. Both when asking for an IV battle and when actually in one, particularly if the other player is doing checking as well. When asking in a forum, do so politely, and don't get frustrated if someone doesn't respond to you right away. Maybe people are busy or don't have time. Don't get discouraged and start calling everyone dumb just because they won't IV battle you; it's rude and will make them less-likely to take up your offer. In the actual battle, if the other player is having to do some checking also, kindly wait for the other person to finish before you disconnect (assuming you finish first). If you're done writing down your stats and are waiting for the other player, maybe you can go ahead and start checking your IVs in the calculator.
  • Be thankful. It's just good manners to thank someone for doing you a service, so thank the person who IV battled with you for their help in your efforts to breed the ultimate Pokemon. I'm sure they'll appreciate it, plus they might be more willing to do it again if you're friendly.

For our demonstration, we're going to have an IV battle. So let's get ready!

IV Battle Time!
What you'll need:
  • A sheet of paper
  • Two pens of varying colors

On your sheet of paper, write the name of the Pokemon you're checking (in this case, Eevee). You don't have to do this if you don't want to; it just might help if you look at the paper later for some reason and say, "Wait, who was this?" Now make a list for each Eevee that looks something like this:
01 (Male or Female symbol)
HP-
Atk-
Def-
SpAtk-
SpDef-
Spd-

Make one of these columns for all 6 of your Eevees in one of the color of pens (save the other one for later; if you don't have two different colored pens, it's not horrendously important--it just helps the IV numbers to stand out on the page).

Once you have this at the ready, let's get into battle!

The Battle Itself
Once you're in battle, go straight to the Pokemon screen. Select your first Eeevee, then check his stats. For each Eevee in your party, write the stats of each category in its corresponding place on your sheet. When you're both finished, disconnect, and load up your calculator in your browser.

Let's Check Them Out!
For this demonstration, I'm going to be using the Veekun calculator, although everything I'll mention is basic to all calculators
  • First input which Pokemon you're checking (in this case, Eevee)
  • Next, input the level (level 100)
  • Next, select the nature (in this case, Modest)
  • Then input all the stats on your sheet into their corresponding places. Since these Pokemon aren't EV trained yet, you don't have to worry about those spaces.
  • When you're finished, click the "Calculate" button.
  • When the page reloads, write out your IVs in each stat next to its corresponding one on your sheet (do this in the different colored pen to make it stand out if you like). Also, make a note of the Hidden Power type and its Base Power, if you like (and your calculator provides it).
  • Using the same input for Pokemon, level, and nature, go back through, erase the stats in the boxes, and input the stats of the next Pokemon, and so on until your entire list is complete.

Found a Diamond in the Rough
Did one of your Pokemon turn out to have great IVs? That's fantastic! Your breeding process is done.

Remember: The closer you are to 31 in every stat, the better! As a personal rule, anything over 20 is pretty good, anything over 25 is great, and anything 29 or above is excellent. So if you have one with mostly 31-28 and one 25, I'd personally take it (assuming the 25 is in a stat I don't really heavily need to depend upon). You can always keep trying, though, but set that one aside juuust in case. c:

...Or Maybe It's Cubic Zirconia...
Do all your Eevee's IVs suck? (Heh, "Eevee's IVs"...try saying that 3 times fast wink ) No worries, there are a few things you can do.

1.)Keep breeding with your current Daycare couple. Get another batch and try again. If you still don't have decent IVs after a second batch (making 12 total so far), move on to option 2.

2.)Get some new parents. Look at the IVs of your all the Pokemon you've currently checked. Does one have really good stats in most of what you need, but a few really bad ones? Does something it can breed with have the stats you'd like on the first, but not the good stats your first one does?

For example, let's say we have two Modest Eevees, one male and one female, with the following IV spreads:

(HP/Atk/Def/SpAtk/SpDef/Spd)
Male: 31/31/29/2/3/20
Female: 20/2/24/31/20/3

See, our Male would be perfect if it weren't for that awful Special Attack! gonk But look, our Female has a great Special Attack IV! Why don't we try breeding these two together? (It's okay; in-breeding is perfectly legal in the Pokemon world. ninja )

Repeat the whole process of breeding and checking this way.

Note: If even after a second couple you're not getting good results, pick a new pair and try with them, building up your chances of having better IVs.

This brings us to an interesting question, though:

Q: How exactly are IVs passed on from parent to child?
A: It's...complicated. On the one hand, Pokemon babies do inherit IVs from each parent (mommy and daddy), but sometimes the game throws in a random IV. So even if both your parents have 31s across the board, there's still a chance they might end up with a 0 in a stat.

Heart Gold and Soul Silver gave us a small method to help in the war against the randomized IV:

If you're familiar with EV training, then I'm fairly certain you're familiar with the Power Items. These items correlate to each of the 6 stats.

Well, let's say I have an Eevee daddy with a 31 in Speed, and I really, really want all of his babies to have this IV. If I put the Power Anklet on him before sending him off to breed, then all of his babies will have his Speed IV 100% of the time. In this way, you can pass up to two stats down to your babies, but at the expense of the Everstone trick. It's best to just pass on one and hope for the best with the other stats.

However, this only works in HGSS.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 8:43 pm

Q: This sure takes a long time...Is it really worth it?
A: Why yes, yes it does. Whether or not it's "worth it" to you depends on whether or not you'd like extra points in your stats. In the end, it's all your choice.

Q: What about Pokemon I can't breed, like Legendaries and Trio Pokemon?
A: I'm glad you asked that. Simply put, if you're hunting down a legendary, you're probably soft resetting for a good nature (or at least you should be). Thankfully, most of the legendaries start at higher levels, so you can check them as they are. The IV calculations won't be exact, but they'll give you a good idea of what that Pokemon's final IVs look like. So if you get the right nature but the IVs suck, you can reset again without having to save for an IV battle.

And....that's pretty much it. I've taught you all I know. Now it's up to you to go out there and breed the most godly Pokemon you can. Good luck~!
