While i was visiting my friend today she got a text asking her to what the ten commandments were, at first this was ignored. Then curiosity got the better of us and we went to have a look for a bible and sent of the commandments to the guy who asked for them.
The Ten Commandments :
1. You shall not worship any other god but the Lord.
2. You shall not make a graven image. (no making pictures or image of God, or worshipping them, AKA worshipping Idols)
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.
4. You shall not break the Sabbath. (no working on a sunday!)
5. You shall not dishonor your parents.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not commit perjury. (lie about people)
10. You shall not covet. (be jealous of people's stuff)
We then went and spoke to her mum (cause i was leaving) and discussed which and how many we'd broken and why...
here are my responses
1. Don't really believe and since i do not worship i clearly break this one (also i worship the God Ipod and the FSM... but we'll leave that to another time)
2. Worship of the Ipod
3. Done on so many occasions it's beyond count
4. I only work on sundays ¬.¬
5. Um in the actual Bible this is thou shall honour their mother and father, or something, and i certainly haven't done that
6. Unless this includes insects i've actually obeyed this one
7. Haven't and never will break this one (i hopes)
8. Broken
9. Done many times
10. Well of course i'm jealous of things! I'm human!!!
Discuss : The necessity for these Commandments in the Modern World
Whether you have or haven't broken these
Please Don't Discuss : Your opinions on the Christian religion... i don't need this to degrade as sometimes happens when religion comes into things
Attmpt to convert people to your religion/atheism
(also if it's felt this should be in the serious discussion instead of here please feel free to move it)

I believe in nothing good will ever come out of two things: baking plastic in the oven and getting hit in the head with a metal object. 2. You shall not make a graven image. 1. I follow this one to a tee. I worship no God, which means I also worship no other God.
2. I'm artistically crippled.
3. Jesus christ, this is a sin?
4. I finish work at Midnight saturday, then collapse into bed for Sunday.
5. Pretty sure I've not broken this one.
6. Haven't killed anyone yet
7. Haven't done that either, though lets face it, who'd have me xd

I'm a Catholic, but don't really follow religion much. xP
1. Guess I've followed this.
2. I call out how the gaming gods are smiting me if I happen to suck at a game, I do this with various other things too so I guess I fail this one.

4. Yard work, broken this.
5. I don't and try not to, so I follow this.
6. Followed
7. Followed
8. Around here, this is a given to break.
9. I do this for shits and giggles, works great against assholes.
10. I'm not usually serious in jealously for people.

2. I broke this one, I can't really remember the events leading up to it though. >.>
3. Hell I've broken this more time than God has absolved sin.
4. Does school work count? Cause I think I might be able to write that one off.

6. I can absolutely say I haven't murdered anybody. (yet)
7. Same as 6 but replace "murdered" with "adulterated".

9. I know I've done this, amount I do it is questionable.

My opinion of religious commandments and such is that they are guidelines and not doctrine because if there really is an omnipotent being he/she/it would know that nobody could ever follow all of these commandments in their life at all times.

I'm Catholic and worship in front of a Crucifix. I am also Protestant and worship in front of an empty cross. I think the point is moot sweatdrop
3. "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God."
Guilty... Sorry, but I'm angry at times... >.>
4. "Remember the Sabbath by keeping it holy."
I don't work any day blaugh
5. "Honor your father and your mother."
Oh, I honor them. I may gripe, b***h, and moan, but I do as they ask most of the time sweatdrop

I only kill the ants in my room. When there are a gabillian of something to replace the one I killed, I find it justified 3nodding Also I was just thinking about this: What if you kill to save your life? Is that justifiable?

I steal what my mother stole from me. So technically, I can't steal something that belongs to me blaugh And French Fries.... I can't help but like em sweatdrop

I made a big lie only once.... and Karma kicked my a** on that one....
10. "You shall not covet your neighbor's house, wife, manservent/maidservent, ox, donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
This is Gaia right?
But I personally was taught that if you sincerely mean it in your heart, God would forgive you no matter what sweatdrop

(no working on a sunday!) -I don't work on weekends because I'm not on campus and it's a half hour drive to get there...not worth it. 5. You shall not commit adultery. -/has no one so it be kinda impossible at the moment....though I wouldn't do it. 8. Okay, so I'm the type of person that believes the bible is meant to be very generalized - it is a basic set of rules and codes. Guidelines, really. So I'm gonna sort of interpret them in the way *I* think they're meant to be.
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
People tend to think this is a "duh" one, but I don't think it's that. People tend to think this is knocking all other religions that don't have the same God or gods.
The way I see it is that you shall value nothing before God, God being all that is good, righteous, etc. People try to personify God. God isn't a person. It's more of a concept, really. You shall have nothing before goodness (and doing the right thing and blahblahblah).
TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
Again, people have this habit of taking things literally. People read the passage "that we are made in the image and likeness of God," so they assume that that means flesh and hair and so on and so forth. The way I see it, we are made in the image and likeness of God in our concept or worthiness. We all have an inherent dignity as people, for we're . . . all .. . people.
THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'
Don't diss God, yo. Don't knock what's good. Mmkay. Oh, and don't run around saying God said such and such when he didn't. kthx.
OH, AND DON'T ******** TAKE QUOTES FROM THE BIBLE OUT OF ******** CONTEXT*.
FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
Dude, take some time to chillax and put your feet up. It's not all about workworkwork. Take some time to enjoy the world around you.
FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.'
You're not as smart as you think you are. Listen to people who are older than you, because, like, they've lived longer and most likely know what they're talking about. Use your judgement, though. If they're raving lunatics, you don't need to listen to them. But do respect them.
SIX: 'You shall not murder.'
'Cause it's not nice.
SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'
See above.
EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'
See above.
NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
See above.
TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'
See, this one has a much deeper meaning. People are very materialistic, which Jesus was strongly against. He believed that the rich, so long as they held onto their wealth, would not be able to enter the kingdom of heaven. By clinging to material things, they're forgetting the worth of the individual person.
* Paraphrased. I don't think the word "********" existed in the time of Jesus.

If they're raving lunatics, you don't need to listen to them. But do respect them. The older people. Who come from times of greater bias, racism, and lesser education. Racism probably would have been long gone by now if people didn't adopt this stance. Completely, really. It's still not all gone. I'll give it a heaving hell no lest they can provide proper reasoning.

*lurks in* I might point out that the Sabbath is technically Saturday.
Also that in Old Testament Jewish law, there is a repeated motif of rest.
For example, every... 7 years? they were supposed to let a field/vineyard lie fallow to rest the soil, and every 7 years (Year of Jubilee) slaves sold to repay debts were set free, etc.
The Sabbath law also extends to animals, not just people. You're not supposed to ride them on the Sabbath, etc, basically so that everyone has a day of rest and time with God/family.
I might point out that this commandment became very... legalistic through the interpretation of Jewish religious leaders, to the point that they accused the disciples of breaking the commandment by breaking off some barely to eat in a field they were passing through, and accused Jesus of breaking it when he healed a sick man on the Sabbath. Jesus's response was something along the lines of-- it's what's in the heart, not the technicalities. wink
