I pronounce it phonetically and with a Japanese "r" (which sounds sort of like a mix between the English "r" and "l")?

Think of the word having two syllables in where to apply stress. SÁKURÁ. (sáh.koo.rá)
The middle syllable is pronounced faster than the other two. And yes, the r is something between the an "r" and an "i". So, with enough practice you'll get it.
