I have no idea how much this matters to the Americans (Or anyone else, haha) out there, but the gold meedal game in men's hockey is right now, Canada vs USA. Does anyone who's not canadian know the stakes on this game? If we get this gold, we will have won the most golds ever in the winter Olympics.
It was pretty amazing at work today, literally everyone who came in within an hour of the game starting had something to say about it. I've never realy paid any attention to sports before, but even I can keep myself from getting excited about this.

i strongly suspect the officials were afraid of retaliation if they ruled against the canucks after some hard contact but of course i would never formally voice such an unneighborly sentiment!
actually i am tickled that we took silver, we were predicted to not medal at all.

The US beat us earlier in the tournament, but we won against them in the final. And I can't really comment on the reffing, since I didn't actually see the whole game xD All I know is that Canada is damn proud of itself now, theres been some really neat footage on CTV of people celebrating. Whole areas of Vancouver are impossible to get through because of the people celebrating in the streets.
I feel insanely Canadian right now.

XD Grats!
While I am American, I tend to root for everyone in big events like the Olympics.

Me too, its usually not very important to me xD
But something about this year, seeing Canada making such a name for itself... We were a whole lot more confident and self-assured than our normal humble selves, and it was exhilerating to see. I gotta say I got really into it, and watching millions of people celebrating all at once... its not something you see here, it was pretty amazing.

Congrats Canada! ^.^ Have you been watching the curling? You used to play, right?
It's really weird, this year is the first year I can remember the Winter Olympics actually getting TV coverage in Australia. Although maybe it makes sense, because we have the best team we've had in years and have actually scored 2 golds. Usually Australia dominates in the Summer Olympics but fails miserably in the Winter. rofl
When a nation gets behind a sporting event it can be pretty amazing. And it happens even more so when the event is actually happening in that country. Like, I'll bet everyone in Australia remembers Cathy Freeman winning gold in the 400m sprint in the Sydney Olympics. But you guys probably have no idea who she is. xd

Yeah, the curling was pretty awesome :3 In particular, the spontaneous singing of the national anthem in the audience... Talk about pride we didn't have before. I still play a bit, but I toned it down once university started. I mostly spare for other teams now.
xD Yeah, I don't know. But I didn't really pay attention to the olympics that year. I was quite a bit younger, and I'm still only half interested now. The exact opposite of your sitation really, we aren't a very interesting presence at the summer olympics, so most people here dont really care xD But sydney crosby is going to be the thing everyone remembers here. He shot the winning goal in overtime, that got us that all-important 14th medal.

i have heard
on the local sports radio
that the theory is that southern hemisphere nations who might be expected to compete in the winter games but do not usually do well
such as CHile, where they do like to ski
or South Africa
or AUstralia
may just find the time of year inconvenient?
everybody is at the beach then, and they do not care to get involved with thoughts of snow and ice yet...?

Could have an effect... But the summer games are scheduled for the north american summer time, so wouldn't there be a similar effect there?

Well, part of it is just the facilities and funding, I think. Can't speak for South Africa or Chile, but from what I know, most of our Winter Olympians are largely self funded. Also, we do have snow but only in a very small area and a very short season. So to get the experience a lot of them have to move overseas. Then for sports like curling or the bobsled and other obscure sports, their presence here is pretty much nonexistent so I have no idea where you would even learn to do it!
