So, I was wondering, what do those of you who are Muslim think of Irshad Manji? If you are unfamiliar with her, she is the Muslim author of "The Trouble With Islam Today: A Muslim's Call For Reform In Her Faith" and she made the documentary "Faith Without Fear," both of which are basically about fighting racism/sexism/homophobia/other-bad-things in Islam. Personally, I think she's really cool and I find her take on Islam to be very refreshing, but there are other people who say that she's "not a real Muslim" or who disagree with her interpretations of Islam. Any thoughts?

She lies. Islam teaches that women and men are equal and that all are to be tolerated. Islamic countries have allowed women to vote for 1,400 years. This concept was unknown to any other religion or culture.

She must have not been a good Muslim, because if she were, she'd know the beliefs of Islam. Oh well, what are you going to do? neutral

i think to judge her as "not a good Muslim" because she felt oppressed in her religion isn't accurate or fair to her. confused couldn't you say it was more that she was raised in a bad interpretation of Islam, and knew better? she was the subject of prejiduce. it isn't Islam's fault, and it is DEFINITELY not her fault that she thinks it was Islam's fault. there are still Islamic nations which believe that women don' deserve rights, and they use Islam as their reasoning, the same way that america tends to hate gays and use christianity as their backing even though christianity doesn't teach anything agianst homosexuality.

I think you sort of missed the point...

Her book is called "The Trouble With Islam Today." She does know the beliefs of Islam very well; the point of the book is that other people who claim to be Muslim and use Islam to justify their sexism or homophobia or whatever don't really know Islam. She's not a liar; I think you just got a little confused about her being against certain sects of Islam and not Islam itself.

Actually ... Christianity does mention stoning homosexuals ... but that's off topic.

I fully understand. But I'm not saying that it's her fault that she was subject to prejudice. Though, if she claims that Islam is the fault, then she hasn't read the Qur'an, or the Hadith, which completely contradict what she claims, which, if I'm not mistaken, is a requirement for getting into Paradise in the Islam religion.

Oh. Well then. I withdraw my statement (though I hate the idea that Islam has sects when any changes to the Qur'an or it's statements isn't Islam anymore according to the Qur'an itself. x]).

but the homosexuals are not stoned for homosexuality. in the book of Genesis for example, the townsfolk want to anally rape a man who Abraham decides to protect, and he offers his virgin daughters in compensation. the townsmen refuse the offer, continuing to press for the rights to gang rape the man Abraham wants to protect from them. God destroys the town and all those townspeople, not because the men were gay, but rather because they were sexually assaulting someone.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

That doesn't talk about sexual assault ...

She's doing a good thing. I saw this because I'm looking at her mission at face value. I'll have to do more research on her.

I think so many Muslims are scared to admit that from the time of the Prophet, the state of Muslims in terms of tolerance has deteriorated. Prophet Muhammd (SAW) lived amongst Jews, Christians and Arab Pagans..and now... neutral

why does ibrahim offers his virgin daughter?

Cause Abraham is an a*****e who thinks that women's pain is less important than those of men even if those women are his innocent children.

Isn't that what most Muslims believe? Or would it be better to say Isralites? I'm not sure the whole culture that believes that, but it is more of a middle eastern belief.

Biblical times are way past now. I won't argue that no one believes that anymore but I think most modern audiences would disagree. I don't know of a religion that supports rape, especially if the parties aren't married.

Well, I wasn't specifically referring to rape. Just that the emotions of women are less important than those of men. I should have worded it differently.
