Since I know not everyone has played Mass Effect, here's some canonical information on the creatures and history of the Mass Effect world, from which Eliade's host Shiana T'Kora originates.

This is as spoiler-free as I can make it, though I can't promise that there aren't spoilers in the links.

- Shiana T'Kora is an asari. Asari are an all-'female' race that live for a very long time, over a thousand years in some cases. Shiana herself is 145, fairly young and in the Maiden stage of her life.

- Menkoli, one of Shiana's companions, is an elcor. Elcor are noted for their oddly monotone voices - they communicate emotion using very faint gestures, scent cues, and other methods too subtle for non-elcor to pick up on, so when they speak with other beings they clarify their emotional intent before each sentence. Menkoli is a botanist by trade. He is a kindly sort, difficult to anger and generally pleasant to everyone given that they don't a.) think he's stupid or b.) hurt his experiments.

- Arli'Khin nar Torray, another of Shiana's companions, is a quarian. He is also a sarcastic son of a b***h. He's ostensibly on his Pilgrimage, though he'll likely never choose to return to the Migrant Fleet. He finds life on the flotilla to be stifling and unpleasant. Arli is a skilled engineer.

Other important canon terms:

Biotic - someone who can manipulate mass effect fields using their nerve impulses. Humans require implants to do this; asari (like Shiana) do not, though they will use amplifying devices ('amps') to augment their abilities. Biotics are roughly equivalent to psionics, except that they specialize in manipulating mass.

FTL Drive - A means of traveling Faster-Than-Light, naturally! FTL drives in the Mass Effect universe build up a drive charge that must be safely managed, lest Bad Things happen.

Mass Relays - A galaxy-wide system of massive teleportation devices (effectively), built by the Protheans. Their discovery has changed and shaped the galaxy.

Omni-Tool - A handy little device somewhat analogous to a Star Trek tricorder.

Protheans - A long-extinct alien race with a tremendously advanced civilization. They built the mass relays, among other things, and ruins of their civilization can be found scattered throughout the galaxy.

And now, for the s**t I Made Up, as obviously the canonical Mass Effect universe didn't go through Gehenna:

Ceres
Ceres - no relation to the Sol-system asteroid Ceres 1 - is a granary world, one of many controlled by the Citadel. It was hard-hit by the 'famine incident'.

An Earth-like planet, Ceres has three moons, Messor, Occator, and Promitor.

The Famine
While too new to have been given an official name by historians, the famine incident was caused by the Week of Famine. Multiple granary worlds suddenly and catastrophically failed, with crops dying overnight with no hope of recovery. The Citadel Council has placed utmost importance upon restoring the ecosystems of the granary worlds in an effort to prevent a food shortage on a galactic scale.

The Citadel Council believes that the famine incident was an act of ecoterrorism.

The Outbreak
Spawned by the Week of Plague, the Outbreak was a sudden viral plague that spread like wildfire to all corners of the galaxy. The virus causing the Outbreak appears immune to all conventional filtration devices. Massive casualties ensued wherever the Outbreak occurred; the quarian Migrant Fleet was particularly hard-hit, with over half the quarian population dying outright from the disease before absolute quarantine was instituted.

At the moment, the theory in Shiana's universe is that the Outbreak was an act of bioterrorism by the alliance of the Terminus Fleet.

Pertica
A warm, damp planet that is 80% ocean, Pertica has no colonies at present despite being hospitable to life. (Due to the heavy ocean cover, the hanar had considered colonizing it prior to renewed conflict with the Terminus Systems.) There are Prothean ruins on the single large landmass of Pertica, as well as a few sub-marine structures.

In our time, Pertica is known as Gliese 581 d. Since the planet is located in the constellation Libra, I named it after an ancient Roman measure of weight.

The Second Rebellion
The Second Rebellion started during the Week of War; the effects of War's preeminence were particularly bad among the krogan, a race prone to poor judgment and combative at the best of times.

During the Week of War, at almost the same time as the appearance of the first Terminus Fleets in the Terminus War, the krogan declared war on the turians, citing vengeance for the deployment of the genophage.

While obviously there are far fewer krogan now than there were during the (first) Krogan Rebellions, but they seem to fight all the harder for that, shattering the peace of Citadel space. With the Terminus War as a distraction, the Citadel forces are hard-pressed to put down both the Second Rebellion and the Terminus Fleets simultaneously.

The Terminus War
The Terminus War began during the Week of War, although hostilities had been simmering for quite some time. It is unknown how long the unification treaties between the species of the Terminus Systems had been kept under wraps - however, two days into the Week of War, massive fleets appeared at the borders of Citadel space.

The Terminus Fleets have been cutting slowly but surely into Citadel space, and have already taken two mass relays out of Citadel control. They have adopted a 'slash-and-burn' method of warfare, destroying everything in their way with no response to diplomatic offers or attempts at parley.

As the Terminus War started at the same time as the Second Rebellion, the Citadel forces are rather hard-pressed to keep everything under control, especially with renewed political pressure and fractures caused by the effects of Gehenna.
