Love was not always easy, not always conventional, it took effort to know and respect ones mate, oneself. Love at first sight was possible, but making that love last required commitment. Disneyana smiled and softly spread a mouthful of seeds down on the ground. This would be the place for Numiar to complete his quest, if he could show tender care, devotion to a single rose, then he was ready to take that symbol to his chosen lady. She knew the task of tending roses was not easy, and so she would offer advice, show her willingness to be there for him, for any pack members who needed her. Not just to tend a simple flower, but in any troubles they had their whole lives within the pack.

"These seeds are yours now Numiar...what you sow will be what you reap, and if a rose comes forth then you may take it to your intended as a symbol of your love and devotion."

Numair lowered his head respectively "Thank you Disneyana, I intend to do just that." His golden gaze drifted over the rough ground, obviously considering how his task would turn out, for it was not one for the faint of heart. Tomorrow he would tend to the ground, attempt to find ways to make the ground less dense. Numair shifted his feet, a bit uncertain as to what to do next. Should he leave the seeds to find water, or take them with him to the stream? Somehow he thought that the second option would be the best, but ... what if he could not find his way back to this spot again?

He looked around, as though memorizing the area... the small clearing where his efforts were to be made. The only thing that really made this clearing any different from the others was the large border on the far end. He would remember that border, with the small tree growing out of the thick moss... yes we would have to if he was to find his way back. Nu kept his eyes and ears peeled, keeping close attention to his surroundings as he made his way in the direction he heard running water.

...

It took him awhile before he found the watering hole with a small natural waterfall he had heard. Numair grew up around water, so of course he knew what it sounded like! Nu lowered his head, the seeds tucked under his tongue, and rested his muzzle into the water. It was cold, and woke him up, and he would need that to find his way back through the tangle of forestry he had just gone though.

To tend a rose it was hard indeed. He just had to keep chanting in his head faela, faela, faela... and hope she wouldn't reject him.

Numair did not sleep well that night at all, his head was filled with the various tasks that he would have to do to keep the rose alive, but oh what if they were already dead? What if those seeds he had so carefully placed in the crevice of the rock had been blown away… or eaten by some hungry bird? Nu awoke early, turning his attention to where his intended lay just inside the cave he had positioned himself in front of. She looked so peaceful in her sleep… not at all in the fretful state she seemed to always have around her when she had to stay still.

Almost as if in a daze the young wolf made his way to the clearing in which he was destined to perform this task. The place wasn’t that bad soil wise, which was one of his main concerns… but it was tough. Nothing but a few tuffs of grass and weeds lived here… and he was … doubtful for the first time. Shaking his head he lowered his eyes back to the ground, literally shaking off the fear. What ifs would only prolong and drag out the task at hand… and he needed to get started if he wanted to make his shift with patrols later.

Once the ground was reasonably cleared of the random sticks, clinging weeds and tuffs of dying grass, Numair went to the rock, searching for the cubby in which he had hidden the seeds. For a long moment he believed he had lost them… though some careless mistake… when the brown little things came into his vision. Oh how he had hidden them well. Nu gathered them into his mouth once more, just as he had done the previous day… with them tucked gently into his cheek… careful not to make the mistake of swallowing them. He laid them in the hole had dug on the outskirts of the clearing… where it would get the eastern sun but not be burned by it. Under the shade of an evergreen, and quickly buried the seeds before rushing off to his duties.

The lack of sleep was obviously wearing on the young wolf. His hours of rest and watchfulness seemed to be off, worrying about Fae, worrying about their rose as a new father often worries over his pups. More often then not he was sneaking away on his free time and trying to see what was happening beneath the soil. But Nu was one of the night, the sky, not one of sun and earth… warmth. And yet… what was love but warmth? He felt warmth from the inside burning out as he watched Faela, Her fascination with the rest of the pack… the way she made the others laugh with her stories.

Nuamair turned his paranoid gaze about the clearing, resting on the tree where he had buried his rose, it seemed well… well as well as something not sprouted could be. Shaking his head Nu pursed his lips and started the long treck to the stream where he would have to somehow gather water for the rose to begin its journey upward.

it took awhile but the young adult managed to come upon a large enough, strong enough leave that he felt confident in carrying water in. He stood over the bush were the seeds would be longing for what he grasped in his jaws. Lightly he lowered the tip of the leaf to the ground, watching as the ground absorbed up the water longingly. How long had it been since it rained? Nu couldn’t remember… but then didn’t most living things need nutrients?

Numair felt himself pull back a little when Fae talked to him now… it was like he expected every look she gave in his direction was to tell him that she knew his secret and was judging his worth. But hadn’t it always felt that way?… Numair couldn’t quite recall correctly. Trudging with every step, weariness making him less careful then usual his gaze searched the area, for the young evergreen where he had made his promise to see this through. But then… something caught his eye, something that made his heart leap and his bones feel young once more.

A sprout!

He had never saw anything so uplifting before in his life.

Quickly he made his way to the young plant, snuffling it like a young pup before darting off in the direction of the stream. It needed water! He grinned and lapped about, his tail high and a wolfy grin forming on his lips. Oh what joy! Soon enough he would have a rose or hell maybe a bush to present to his intended!

Numair returned with a similar leaf full of water, letting it drip from the tip as he had done before. Now all he had to do was gain patience and wait.

Numair had gone to Disneyana… unsure of what to do now that his sprout had turned into a more mature plant… but was failing to bud or show any growth toward that… was he being impatient? Or perhaps paranoid, paranoid he was sure of. She had reminded him that every young thing needed Nutrients. But what the hell did that come from?

Fertilizer… Numair looked about thinking where he could find that, only just learning what such a thing was…

Decay, left overs… waste… Numair found it all, lying about the forest on the outskirts of the pack, and managed –rather disgusted with it all- to bring it over to the rose and lay it at its base. Hoping… praying… that perhaps it would prove useful to the plant and making it grow.

… Promptly Numair headed toward the stream to wash his muzzle from the various things he still felt clinging there.

Nu cursed himself for his impatience, for his lack of knowledge had managed not to produce a thing. Oh… what would Fae say if she knew… it was a shame what he had done. He had tried so hard… but nothing. Perhaps he hadn’t found the correct things to decompose and feed the soil. Perhaps he had simply failed and should quit before he made more of a fool of himself. Only Disneyana knew of this quest… but… if he failed, how could he face her again and not feel inadequate, not feel sullen and defeated., as low as an omega in the presence of an alpha.

With his tail tucked between his legs he made his way to his most frequent visiting spot… the stream that seemed as familiar as the cave where he spent his nights… or did, now he found the outside calling him more. He needed to water the plant that was growing nothing but leaves. Numair had to focus on the present, shaking the shame from his bones and find his own way. This would work, or he didn’t deserve to be her mate.

After the discouraging course his rose tending had taken Numair felt hesitant to go back, for fear that nothing would be there just like the other days. It would be too much for him, just to see the dark leaves soaking in the morning light, absorbing it greedily. Closing his eyes Numair had to force the worry and the slow pounding of his head to reside. When he opened his eyes Numair found himself standing in the glade where he had begun this long and often tedious journey, for fear of looking directly at the plant itself... Nu’s eyes searched through the various nooks and crannies, before finally making his way over and looking at the demoting plant that had caused him so much grief.

But there… Laying amid the thick leaves absorbing the suns early rays abundantly were several small buds, light with the color they would be when they bloomed. Nu lowered himself into a bow, his muzzle going upward with happiness and yipping at the sky.

His creation, his child, his hard work had paid off!

Numair spent the night there, amid the thick carpet of leaves thrown off by the surrounding trees. No doubt others were worried about him. But when he awoke, the only sights he had was for the blooming roses leaning up toward the sun glistening with perspiration from the previous night. Oh what a sight! Delicately, lovingly, longingly Numair stepped forward, quietly asking permission to take what he had grown, and took a rose into his teeth.

Beautiful, the sight was beautiful just like young love. Disneyana smiled as she nodded softly glad at the males thriving success, she could see every healthy bloom. The color was vibrant, red, a color of passion and she nodded as the male took a rose between his teeth. The lesson had been learned, and she hoped his lady love would appreciate his efforts.

"Go now, I'll ensure your symbol of love continues to bloom, it shall have a special place." She turned away then a soft smile gracing her muzzle.
