Proof that Universal’s REPO MEN ripped–off REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA? See for yourself!

By SpookyDan Walker
link

Time to address all the rumors about the upcoming Universal film Repo Men. I have been getting loads of emails, comments and phone calls about other repo film. Some say the imitation is the greatest form of flattery; in this case PLAGAIRISM is the greatest form?

Did writer Eric Garcia “Repo” (steal, rip off, plagiarize, thieve) Repo the Genetic Opera? I want to show you first hand EXATLY how similar it is, so I got the Book Repossession Mambo, and here is a detailed list of the similarities. Check out the facts for yourself.

(SPOILER ALERT!)

Here are 25 side by side comparisons of Garcia’s 2009 Novel Repossession Mambo, and the 2008 Repo the Genetic Opera:

FINE PRINT

The front cover of the Repossession Mambo paperback book lifts dialogue directly from Repo the Genetic Opera:

Repossession Mambo: “Everybody has a price…Everybody can be bought…Just don’t forget to read the FINE PRINT”.

Repo the Genetic Opera: This echoes a line directly from Repo Opera song Zydrate Anatomy sung and repeated 4 times “Mag’s contracts got some might FINE PRINT, Some mighty fine print? Some mighty fine print, and that mighty fine print puts Mag in fine predicament”

(From this point on; “Reposession Mambo” will be referred to as “Repo Men”.)

DRUGS

Repo Men: (pg 1 cool Garcia introduces a anti rejection drug called “Q”. (pg120) “He sucked up enough Q to kill a Clydesdale…he offered me the sparkling red powder on six or seven occasions…” later “…the central processor was crusted over, filthy with crystallized cerebrospinal fluid. That’s what happens when your hooked on Q, and it’s a shame that even after the most expensive of artiforg implantations, he wasn’t able to reprogram himself to beat the habit.”

(Pg 234) “Fritzed on the Q.”

(Pg 271-276) details the effects of the drug Q.

Repo the Genetic Opera: Has a drug called “Zydrate”, “Z” for short. A glowing blue LIGHT gets brighter and brighter as the Z-yringe draws out “Z” from the woman’s skull. It lights the room and the dead woman. In the song Come Up and Try My New Parts it’s referred to as “Z” when Amber sings “I want a hit of Z”

Early posters of Amber Sweet state “Z up responsibly”

Q – Sparkling red powder

Z – Glowing Blue liquid

BAR-CODED HEART

Repo Men: The poster artwork for a Repo Men poster is a picture of an artificial heart with lines on it that quite closely resemble a barcode.

Repo the Genetic Opera: since 2001 the website for Repo Opera has had an iconic image of a heart with a barcode . In the opening of the Repo Opera Film Jessica Adams is taken down by the repo man, and he holds her bar-coded heart directly up to the camera. Also a bar-coded heart is a hero prop of the song “Mark It Up”.

1C. Repo Men: (pg 293) Remy watches a recording of a repossession “It’s Just like a movie, just like gong to the pictures” as they watch the recording through the dead mans eyes.

Repo the Genetic Opera: Blind Mags character has artificial eyes, which she received from GeneCo after being born blind. Mag is the spokesperson for GeneCo, and her eyes project holographic apparitions of past events, at which time the iris spirals in and out.

ORGAN FINANCING

Repo Men: (chapter 5) Remy discusses in great detail how the world has changed and poor people can apply for new body parts. The people are about to become the victims of The Union Bio- Repo Men, because they can’t really afford it.

Repo the Genetic Opera: In the first part of the movie comic panels describe detail how the world has changed and poor people can apply for new body parts. These people are about to become the victims of The GeneCo Organ Repo Men, because they can’t really afford it.

Repo Men: Remy the repo man has an estranged son.

Repo the Genetic Opera: Nathan the repo man has an estranged daughter

Repo the Genetic Opera: Nathan the repo man sings “Ninety days delinquent gets the Repo treatment”

WHORES

Repo Men: (pg 46) ”as San Diego has just instituted their Red Light District a year before…’ Remy recalls of his first time with a prostitute that later became his first wife.

Repo the Genetic Opera: Zydrate Anatomy song takes place in the back alley way filled with hookers and junkies.

CIRCUS for BODY PARTS

Repo Men: “…It’s not like the ones they have down at the Union Theme Park (Motto- where entertainment and rejuvenation meet)…” Remy is talking about the Park where people dressed as body parts try to entice you to get something replaced.

Repo the Genetic Opera: Sanitarium Square is a circus like environment where people dressed as weirdo’s and freaks try to entice you to get something replaced.

DUMPSTER DIVING

Repo Men: (pg63) “On the way downtown, I jumped into a china store and pilfered a leaded-crystal vase, along with an attending box from the trash dumpster outside.”

Repo the Genetic Opera: Graverobber jumps in dumpsters to look for used drug paraphernalia.

SKIN GRAFTS

Repo Men: (pg 102) “New skin grafts, for example, should liver spots become a problem, are available at a very reasonable rate at a Union Supply House, as are most major artiforg. implantations.”

Repo the Genetic Opera: “Get your exotic Skin Grafts by GeneCo” tag line used on poster artwork.

DISCREETLY REMOVE CELEBRITIES

Repo Men: (pg107) “The Pink Door was often used as a last resort for deadbeats who were public figures, clients you didn’t want to drag back into the world of solvency by their dangling entrails. So rather than call out the Bio-Repo men and leave a messy Beverly Hills scene for the paparazzi, they’d send an embossed invitation, delivered by courier from the Credit union offices…”

Repo the Genetic Opera: During the song “Who ordered Pizza?” a heated discussion between Nathan Wallace and Rotti Largo, Rotti explains that Blind Mag (the spokesperson for GeneCo) needs to be discreetly taken out. “This is a job of special importance. It is involving a GeneCo employee. A singer we all know…I can’t afford a scandal here…You take her down!”

ETHER – TEAR GAS

Repo Men: (pg 117, & many more) Ether is the chemical used to knock out victims before the get a body part removed.

Repo the Genetic Opera: Tear gas containers are used to knock out Shilo and the Graverobber when caught, and used by the Hench girls to capture Shilo while inside her mothers tomb.

MUSIC

Repo Men: used throughout the book, Garcia references songs and music to illustrate points (pages 24, 118, 119, 120, 133,172, 173, 255, 271)

Repo the Genetic Opera: is an Opera, with music from start to finish.

ANIMATED DEAD AS COMIC RELEIF

Repo Men: (Pg 154-155) Remy removes an Artiforg Bladder in a routine repossession, but is alarmed when a voice is heard. He eventually finds out that it’s the dead man has had a “Vocom” communicator in his throat. As he removes the bladder from the corpse, the dead body comically continues to speak “Baby you know I love you…Come on back I swear I will never hurt you again”.

Repo the Genetic Opera: During a particularly gory sequence, The Repo man “guts” his victim to remove his liver and kidneys and then shoves his hand inside the corpse and uses him like a ventriloquist doll singing the last refrain of the song of “Thankless Job”

COMMERCIALS

Repo Men: (pg 202-203.). Remy talks about the different commercials used by The Credit Union, and its much used Slogan, “What’s new in you?”

Repo the Genetic Opera: throughout the film Commercials for body parts from GeneCo are shown and heard to “See if Surgery is right for you?”, and “At GeneCo, an affordable organ makeover is just a simple financing away. Take control of your life, because it’s what’s on the inside that counts.”

MELINDA – MARNI – THE REPO MAN KILLS HIS OWN WIFE

Repo Men: (pg 203, 204, 270-275) we are given insight that Remy’s (ex) wife has artificial organs, which is why he killed her. And this causes a bad relationship between Remy and his son. Remy explains “And that’s how I found out that Melinda was packing Metal. I suppose it was better for me to know than as opposed to finding out later on, but I wonder if things would have changed if Peter (Remy’s son) kept his mouth shut. Probably not. I would have killed her either way.” Later he finds Melinda strung out on Q and kills her, his son will not forgive him after this.

Repo the Genetic Opera: One of the main plot points is that Nathan Wallace had to kill his wife to save his child. Because he killed her he is tricked into being a repo man for the evil GeneCo to hide this fact from his daughter. “That dark fateful night when you murdered your wife, It’s too painful, Marni (Nathans wife) was past helping…. We made an agreement, I will honor that agreement, I will honor that agreement, I’ll do as I’m told so Shilo never knows, about that dark and fateful night, or my secret repo life, don’t deny your repo life.”

THE OUTSIDER – THE GRAVEROBBER

Repo Men: (pg 230) Remy is introduced to a vigilante named Ashbury (termed an “Outsider”). Ashbury steals artiforgs from the dead bodies and redistributes it to those in need of surgery. Ashbury sizes him up to see if he might have any artiforgs that he can take to sell on the black market. “ …there was distinct possibility he was sizing me up for artiforgs. Wondering if I could be of any financial value to him down the line.” (pg 234) Ashbury proceeds to drug the Remy with the Q drug “ on the filthy fingertips, nails long and unfiled, was a sparkling red powder glittering in the glare from the exposed overhead bulb.” He then offers Remy safe housing away from the Union

Repo the Genetic Opera: The Graverobber is a vigilante who steals drugs (Zydrate) from the dead bodies and redistributes it to those in need of surgery (or those who are just hooked on Z). Graverobber offers to help Shilo stay away from GeneCo.

REPO MAN ON THE RUN

Repo Men: (pg cool From the start of the book Remy is on the run from the Union, later (pg 236) “He wanted to know why I was a Bio Repo man was on the run.”

Repo the Genetic Opera: After Nathan refuses to reclaim Blind Mag’s eyes; he goes on the run from GeneCo. “Attention all GeneCo personnel: Apprehend the Repo man Nathan Wallace, at once! Use all means necessary to bring him to me.”

FLYING PERFORMERS

Repo Men: (pg 235-239) Remy recounts a story about dealing with a great couple of trapeze artists named Hans and Edward, who were on target for repossession. “they were trapeze artists, good ones too, who regularly defied death by flying 50 feet above the midway floor.”

Repo the Genetic Opera: Blind Mag in her final performance flies high above the crowd on wires while she sings her final song “Cromaggia”.

THE BIG SET UP

Repo Men: In the final moments of the book it is revealed that Remy’s whole career as a repo man has been a set up. The artiforg heart was there just to string him along.

Repo the Genetic Opera: In the final moments of the film Rotti reveals that he set up Nathan Wallace, and it was actually Rotti who killed Marnie. The guilt was used against him to make him a repo man and string him along.

The finale to this report…

COVERING HIS a**:

Assuming that the questions would arise of why his story so closely resembles the Repo the Genetic Opera, Eric Garcia’s 2009 novel Repossession Mambo (now released with it’s new title Repo Men) includes a 12 page account of where Garcia’s alleged Repo idea evolved from, called THE TAMING OF THE MAMBO (pg 316). The chapter is skewed as advice to an aspiring writer’s viewpoint; Garcia says “It should be interesting to anyone curious about the adaptation process and looking to make a career in writing…” He tells tales of the film being green lit, the story evolving and basically covers his a**, so that he doesn’t get sued. Most would agree this is a (heavily doctored) admission of guilt just by being included in a paperback novel. I can’t think of any other novel who has added a “how-to make a movie” section at the back of their fictional novel. My guess is that Universal forced him to include this, to stop the Repo Opera fans from crying RIP-OFF.

This is not a case of two volcano movies or two asteroid movies, these similarities go so much deeper than the same theme of Body Part Repo Men. Adding insult to these comparisons is the clear copycat marketing campaign used by Repo Men.

I leave it up to you to decide.

Ha...that is some excellent proof you have dug up. I only have two little corrections for you because I did notice a couple slight...and i do mean slight as in tiny and irrelevant...but there are false body part's in A main character. Not THE main character because Nathan and Shilo would be THE main characters and neither have false body parts. And Shilo isn't really estranged....if she were estranged she wouldn't even be located in that sweetass repo mansion of Nathan's....but besides that...everything else is spot on which means...Universal will pay!!!! PAY!!!!!!!!

Wow...just wow. I didn't realize how blatant the plagiarism was until now...Universal just doesn't know the meaning of subtlety, do they?

No, I don't think it's proof. And even though I realize my opinion won't be the popular one in here sweatdrop , I'll tell you why:

FINE PRINT--Just because they both say "fine print", it's plagiarism? That's ridiculous, it's about repossession..."fine print" is a common phrase when talking about contracts. That's like saying one law show ripped off another because they both say "that's his M.O."

DRUGS--This I can understand, but I'm still not ready to call out plagiarism. I know several people who get hooked on the drugs given out after surgery. Hell, I had people coming up asking me after I had some surgery done if they couldn't buy my drugs. It's not surprising something of this kind makes it into these stories. Sci-fi stories love introducing strange drugs.

BAR-CODED HEART: If that's the case, then both Garcia and TZ needed to be kissing up to Enki Bilal's a** before he sues them both. He had bar-coded hearts back in the 80's.

TITLES--..Well, we have already ascertained both movies are about organ repossession. What are they supposed to call the men? (And if that's the case, "organ repo men" was already used in the Australian 2002 movie "Down to the Wire". Let's sue them to, before they sue us.)

SCALPEL--For god's sake, it's a medical movie. You think they're going to use a chainsaw to get a liver out?

RECRUITING REPO MEN--How dare both companies advertise open positions? That's such a rare occurance, it's obivously a rip-off.

EVIL CORPORATION--Once again, Garcia and TZ need to be sucking Enki Bilal's left nut, because he already an evil corporation selling enhanced organs. And it's not like the idea of an "evil corporation" is anything new.

ARTIFICIAL EYEBALLS--Once again, we've already ascertained they're both about organ repossession. Eyeballs are organs.

ORGAN FINANCING--FOR GOD'S SAKE, WE ALREADY KNOW--BOTH MOVIES ARE ABOUT ORGAN REPOSSESSION.

ESTRANGED CHILDREN--Popular story device. Everyone roots for the underdog, and what's the easiest way to create an underdog character? Have that character be estranged from his family. (And Shiloh was hardly estranged. She was your typical wangsting teenager.)

90 DAYS DELINQUENT--Ok, yes, there is no particular reason both had to be 90 days.

WHORES--Everyone loves a hooker. We can hardly have every book/movie/tv show that's ever used a hooker suing each other. And the "evidence" provided there clearly shows that whores are used in different ways between the two.

CIRCUS FOR BODY PARTS--No particular reason for both.

DUMPSTER DIVING-- ...Yeah, because the dumpster diving was such a major plot point? It's really worth bringing up.

SKIN GRAFTS-- Seriously, again, both movies have the same concept of organ replacement. Skin grafts are no brainer.

DISCREETLY REMOVE CELEBRITIES--Does that not happen in real life? How dare both Garcia and TZ take a cue from reality in their writing.

ETHER--Well, dur. At least Remy bothers to knock his victims out. And tear gas isn't the same as ether.

MUSIC--Repossession Mambo was a stupid title; at least Garcia tried to connect it around. But being an opera=/=referencing music.

ANIMATED DEAD--They are dark stories. But wait...Someone call Tim Burton! I believe he's reigning champ of using animated dead as comic relief. And hasn't he been for decades now?

COMMERCIALS--How dare both companies advertise? That's such a rare occurance, it's obivously a rip-off.

MELINDA/MARNI--Sounds like Remy killed his own wife. Nathan does not. Nathan does not kill Marni because of his job; she is killed by Rotti out of jealousy. The circumstances are completely different.

THE OUTSIDER--Once again, different characters in different situations. Graverobber makes himself money. This Ashbury sounds more like a Robin Hood.

REPO MAN ON THE RUN--Nathan on the run isn't the point of Repo!. Remy on the run is the point of Repo Men. And once again, if we want to b***h about this, someone call up the people of "Down to the Wire". Because their movie was also about a organ repo man on the run after he is "rendered obsolete".

FLYING PERFORMERS--Oh seriously? Once again, was this ever such a big plot point for either?

THE BIG SET UP--Yes, because this concept has never been used before. Completely different circumstances surround both men, so each story evolves differently.

COVERING HIS a**: Plenty of authors now include little things at the end of their books, detailing the process of how they wrote the story. And secondly, it's no secret people have been accusing him of plagiarism (hey look what's this is about), OF COURSE he ******** writes that. TZ wrote his blog, detailing about his process of coming up with Repo!....what does he have to hide? Oh right, nothing.

In conclusion: SpookyDan tried really hard to reach for similar points. Seriously...dumpster diving, flying performers, fine print? For god's sake. Only about two or three points of his actually held up. Also, his entire essay functioned on the belief that organ repossession had never been done before, which is incredibly wrong. This essay only works on people who are already pissed off about Repo Men. It won't convince any one else. Sorry if it sounds like I ranted, but this entire thing was honestly ridiculous to me. At least he backed up everything with quotes.
(And it won't help TZ, who has already repeatedly told people to leave the matter alone. If the mail to his inbox doesn't triple, I'd be surprised.)

Masquerade! Paper faces on parade. Masquerade!

Gek, I think what Spooky is trying to get at is how many of those things are relayed within the book and not just because they are similar in theme. A lot of that is worded too similar to be more of a coincidence. Why do both have children that are oppressed by their fathers? Why do the organ companies both focus on getting people to buy their products through a carnival event? The two recently killed men having something/someone speak for them? Both having Repo Men that are wanted by the same companies that employed them? Repossession Mambo could have been about repossessed organs, but done so in one of millions of other ways. However, they are too similar to write off as some coincidence made in heaven because pairing them up at certain points seems too suspicious to those that know Repo!'s history and plot line inside and out.

The part where he adds in a few pages more to explain to other inspiring writers? He sounds as though he is describing Repo! more than his book. It seems a little too coincidental that Universal would hire someone that did not even have his book published, or even finished, or even known yet to make a movie about organ repossession after they were dismissed by the Repo! crew for wanting to take the music out of the movie.

I have not read the book, but from what I have seen this is what I think Spooky is getting at and not just because the movies/novel are about the same thing.

I love Spooky Dan but I don't think these points are valid.

FINE PRINT
Repo! did not coin the term "fine print" and it is most commonly used when there is a contract with very very unpleasant clauses hidden within. It makes sense to use the term any time organ repossession would be a plot point.

DRUGS
The name of the real life drug Ecstasy aka E or X is probably the inspiration for both Z and Q. They're different drugs that do different things.

BAR-CODED HEART
Bar codes are basically THE image one associations with being owned by a corporation. What better image to use to show that you don't even own yourself than a very majorly symbolic organ like the heart with a bar code on it?

TITLES
Repo Man is a real term. Why is surprising that Repo Men/Repossession Mambo would also use a real term that Repo! also used?

SCALPEL
Doctors use scalpels. Duh.

RECRUITING REPO MEN
Again, why is surprising that in both works you have attempts to recruit Repo Men? They don't use the same or even similar tags on their Repo adverts.

EVIL CORPORATION
Evil corporations are extremely common in fiction, and since both works are addressing similar fears regarding health care, it's not surprising.

ARTIFICIAL EYEBALLS
The similarity between cameras and eyes has been done before.

ORGAN FINANCING
Again, the movies have a similar premise but they aren't handled the same way.

ESTRANGED CHILDREN
Ok, I'll give you that one. Not sure how it gets handled but as far as I know the son isn't a major plot point.

90 DAYS DELINQUENT
I believe the usual number of days before someone goes into default is 30 days, so 90 is a nice round number similar to 30 that is also ridiculously short for something as expensive as an organ payment. I admit this one looks a little more suspicious than some of the other supposed similarities, though.

WHORES
Prostitution (along with the aforementioned drugs) are commonly used to show that a society has degraded and that morals are lax. Not that big a similarity.

CIRCUS for BODY PARTS
Bread and circuses, anyone?

DUMPSTER DIVING
Seems like a pretty different context for the dumpster diving.

SKIN GRAFTS
How your skin looks is a big part of "beauty" so is this surprising?

DISCREETLY REMOVE CELEBRITIES
When a celebrity does something scandalous, any companies that are closely associated with them pretty much immediately drop them like a sack of s**t. See what happened to Tiger Woods or Tom Cruise for reference. This is just taking it another step further.

ETHER – TEAR GAS
Both of these are used in real life. Again, what is the big deal?

MUSIC
A lot of writers do this. Stephen King does it a lot, or Stephenie Meyer (yuck). :/

ANIMATED DEAD AS COMIC RELIEF
Different contexts, and that actually sounds more disturbing to me than funny. It may be funny in the book or the movie but described like that, it's just creepy.

COMMERCIALS
You expect a company NOT to advertise their product?

MELINDA – MARNI – THE REPO MAN KILLS HIS OWN WIFE
Sounds like Remy killed his wife deliberately, while Nathan most definitely did not do it intentionally.

THE OUTSIDER – THE GRAVEROBBER
Ok, that one also sounds a little suspicious although Ashbury sounds like more of an ambiguous character than Graverobber since he's actually providing a needed service instead of just being a drug dealer.

REPO MAN ON THE RUN
Nathan isn't the main character, and he didn't turn against GeneCo because he had any organs in default. Nor did he turn against GeneCo for Blind Mag, who had organs in default.

FLYING PERFORMERS
Trapeze artists vs. being hoisted on wires? Mag was one wires because her song was about a bird. I doubt it's part of her regular act.

THE BIG SET UP
Repo Men/Repossession Mambo uses this as a twist, whereas in Repo! we found this out not very far into the movie. We know fairly early on that Rotti is manipulating everyone around him.

COVERING HIS a**:
The fact that Repo! fans are crying "Rip-off!" doesn't mean that it was one.

XD For the record, I wrote all this as I was reading the first post through. Now I'm going through the replies and I see Gek did the same thing as me.
PostPosted: Sat Feb 27, 2010 4:33 am

I agree with Gek and Swift. Yes it is a bit of a copy-cat but a lot of the points are common things. Though the whole Q drug thing bugs me. It may sound like he's just nitpicking, but red and blue are both primary colors that are close together and sparkling and glowing are quite synonymous. Yes there are other surgery drugs out there, but still.

And the whole killed wife and estranged son thing. Yes Nathan didn't purposefully kill Marni, but the whole family type thing is quite similar. Widowed Dad, Child that isn't that close (After awhile Shilo probably stopped talking to her Dad as much and one can guess that the situation got awkward. And I'm sorry but the Mom's name was MELINDA. It's a little too close for comfort).

ANYWAYS! What I'm trying to say is the usual we can't do anything about it. Though it's kind of like their doing the whole "I'm not touching you" routine. They're getting close enough to agitate us, but when we complain it's just like "But we weren't doing anything". It's annoying but it will stop if we ignore it. Besides in ten years, when someone mentions this they'll be like "Oh yeah, that rip-off movie of Repo..." meanwhile in the theater next to them a full blown Repo Anniversary Shadowcast is going on.

I agree with that.

I was more trying to say in my post that SpookyDan, in his attempt to show how similar the two were, was just completely over-reaching most of the time. I feel like he wrote another thing up to compare the movies, one thing would be "CHEST HAIR--In Zydrate Anatomy, we see Zdunich's. In so-and-so scene, we see Jude Law has similar colored chest hair."

We know TZ went to Universal and that they liked the idea, but then turned it down because of the singing. And Repo! had cult success. There's no reason why organ repossession can't be a mainstream success...and so they turn out this movie. But is it plagiarism? No. (And it doesn't make sense for Universal to push Garcia to finally publish his novel if he didn't already have it done...now they have to pay him extra.) Quick, Swift! Where's your dueling movies link? xD The fantasy/sci-fi genre is like those refridgerator word magnets--you always have the same pieces, you can just put them in a different order. This movie was bound to happen sometime, anyway.

Here you are, Gek!

Of course, we all know that Universal cannot have the Wombat. Steve is ours alone and THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE.

I do see the similarites and i have 2 things to say
1. Why Kyah WHY!!! crying

and 2. I mean did Repo Men HAVE to use trapeze artists i mean really if you wanted something different then use a flame eater and have him use lungs but really a trapeze artist although i do agree that blind mag's song had the bird thing and they shouldnt be bashing that comparison. but yes squarriorsempress (lol) put out that Marni and Melinda are waaaay to close for comfort and they could have used any number of names could have been used. I also see that the Graverobber/Outsider similarities are also really close (and without being mean How dare they try to use TZ's role for it it could have been a person from the Union to sell the drugs and artiforg crap) either way i am an obsessing fan and i'm hoping they can kick me out of the movie theater when i go nuts and yelling at a movie screen when i see it on thursday
