Steven Smith had broken her skateboard. He had broken it and, for awhile, she'd had to go without. It'd been a rather trying time and poor Vanessa had felt very deprived. Skateboarding was fun, skateboarding was hard, and, with the exception of the board its self, skateboarding was generally free. It didn't cost her anything to perform tricks at the park and, for a girl who wasn't used to having money, that was a nice thing.

The board she was using was a new acquirement. She'd run into Steven at the park today, yelled at him a little for not replacing her skateboard yet and, when he'd laughed at her, she'd embarrassed him in front of his friends when she'd punched him hard enough to leave a bruise. "Fine, fine," Steven had said, rubbing his arm with a wince, and handed over his own beloved toy, "take mine. If I have to buy a new one, I might as well keep it for myself."

At first, she'd been tempted to decline his offer. She'd been tempted to take his skateboard and smack him over the face with it, but she'd refrained. The itch she had to return to the ramps and the rails was too great and his offer too rich to pass up. Besides, she hadn't really wanted to make him cry or anything. So she'd taken his skateboard, which was well used and well loved, and claimed it for herself.

It didn't take long after that for Steven and his friends to leave and Vanessa was relieved to see them go.

She was lean and fit; in good shape, with good balance. The board roared with the hollow sounds of wood as she maneuvered around the park; performing tricks here and there, and generally getting a feel for the sport again. It had been sometime since she'd done this, and she wiped out twice (there were bloody scrapes on the palms of her hands and her knees to prove this). Overall, however, she looked ridiculously happy and almost graceful- a word which wasn't usually associated with Vanessa. Poise was hardly an idea she was familiar with.

Cassius was walking at the moment because it felt good too. He had just woken up a bit ago and was maneuvering around with a heavy hangover. In most cases yes, he would have just stayed in bed. But his father was home, and when his father was within walking distance Cassius got the hell away per usual. He escaped before his father could notice his son was still at home.

He was comfortable at the moment in slim jeans and a sweatshirt. It wasn't like him to go out in such attire, but his headache could honestly care less at the moment. With no surprise his hair looked as though he just left the shower. The brightness of everything outside was a bit overwhelming for his eyes but the air was refreshing and welcoming. He breathed in deeply many times before wandering through to a nearby park. He was surprised to see others participating in so many leisurely activities. He kept wondering what time it was, but then honestly cared less. Everyone else in life did things on schedule. He just did things as they came to him.

He paused slightly and saw someone in the distance skateboarding. He wasn't familiar with skateboarding at all. The only time he'd seen people riding the boards was late at night. He'd see a whole bunch of them riding along and making all sorts of noises. The situation in front of him was much different then that- it was more focused and precise, and the figure was practicing carefully as each moment passed.

Cassius realized it probably seemed strange to just stand there and watch idly, so he continued walking forward before realizing the figure in front of him was a girl. Wait, what? Since when did girls do such things? He put his head to his hand as if he was dreaming or hallucinating. What was the world coming too? He needed to sit down, and thank goodness there was a bench right in front of the skateboarder for him to collapse on. Everything looked normal enough, but he just was so surprised! Wasn't skateboarding dangerous?

Skateboarding was dangerous, and that was how Vanessa liked it. She wasn't a natural, and only months and months of practice (when she wasn't at work, attending class, or babysitting) had honed her veritable lack of skill into a modest talent- one that she exaggerated and liked to brag about. It was at the root of her rivalry with Steven. She irritated him because she wouldn't leave them alone, and he irritated her because they wouldn't accept her. As as a testament to her obvious awesomeness, she also refused to wear safety gear. But that just proved what many people had already learned- that she wasn't very bright.

It had been a long time since her last wipeout and she practically buzzed with confident energy. The wind, created by the speed at which she moved, that blew in her face as she scooted back and forth across the ramps was exhilaratingly cool. This felt wonderful. This felt good. She was good. No, she was incredible.

Concentrating hard, with brow furrowed and pink tongue stuck out of the corner of her mouth, Vanessa was too caught up in adrenaline to notice the young man that had found himself a home on a nearby bench.

Revved up, finally prepared to try something a little risky, the auburn haired girl took a deep breath and propelled herself forward. She held her breath and sweat trickled down the back of her neck as she attempted a boardslide on a rail. It was going well so far; she was in the air, she was so close, the board was solid underneath her feet… and then she looked up. Caught off guard by the site of Cassius watching her, Vanessa squeaked in surprise and, having lost her balance, fell. She groaned when she hit the ground, head clanging ominously against the rail and the rough pavement slicing into the flesh on her forearms.

Her head throbbed and, lifting a hand to where she'd knocked it, Vanessa swore loudly and slammed her foot against the ground in anger. "********!" Quieter, this time, "that really hurt."

Tears, brought on by pain, pooled in her eyes and she fought them back with bitter determination.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 25, 2010 9:07 pm

Everything seemed fine until BAM, skateboarding chick was on the ground and almost crying. The entire scene happened so fast and Cassius had no idea when or where he missed her falling. He must have blinked at the wrong time or lost his attention for a split second. Less then a minute of the girl being on the ground meant that he had left the bench was was heading towards her quickly. "Hey... are you ok??" his voice, although exhausted, was concerned. It wasn't every day you saw someone hurt themselves like that.

He kneeled down next to the girl and saw all of the cuts and scraps left on her body. "Man, you should really be more careful. Are you trying to bang yourself up?" He was hardly the father figure, seeing as his liver had similar bruises at the moment. But still. Why would a girl do something so reckless?

"I've never seen a girl skateboard like that." He sat down on the ground now, joining her in a more comfortable state. "How long have you been practicing for? I can tell you've been doing it for awhile." A fall every now and then was normal. But wasn't she supposed to be wearing protective gear or something? Cassius was obviously not an expert in the sport, but he felt some concern at the moment since the girl next to him was bleeding...

"I wish I had some Band-Aids or something." Would that even be enough? He wondered if his voice resembled panic. It wasn't often he had to sit with someone else while they were in pain! And in truth, he had absolutely no idea on what to do. This was sort of awkward, especially because Cassius felt useless.

It was one thing to sit there and wallow in pain when she was alone, but another thing entirely to have an audience. She stiffened up reflexively when Cassius, like some kind of confused white knight in shining armour with long flowing blond hair, came running to her aid. It wasn't his help or his concern that she was subconsciously rejecting. It was her own weakness.

Despite herself, a couple of tears had escaped and trickled down her cheeks. Embarrassed, Vanessa wiped at her eyes with her fists in frustration. When the young man with the long hair informed her that she ought to be more careful, Vanessa's top lip curled. She leered at him and accused; "What are you talking about? Its your fault I screwed up."

It was meant to be a snarl, but came out sounding more like a sour whimper. She heard it, and her face burned red. Oh, this was awful. Vanessa wanted to be anywhere but here. Vanessa wanted to curl up and die. Vanessa wanted to-

"I've never seen a girl skateboard like that."

-wait, what?

She took a deep breath and paused long enough to collect herself before turning to him, a curious expression on her face. If she wasn't mistaken, this young man sounded impressed with her. Relieved, heart doing a little self-conscious flip-flop, she smiled almost shyly at him.

"Yeah?" Slowly, but surely, her shy smile transformed into an enthusiastic grin, "You could really tell?"

Then, a thought struck her and she frowned, waving her hands dismissively in the air. "Of course you could tell. I've been practicing a long time. Worked really hard at it too, for months."

He suggested band-aids, and she blinked for a second before inspecting her arms and her knees. The scrapes there burned, and the pain increased under the scrutiny of her eyes. There were some tiny stones embedded in the cuts. Vanessa sighed and shook her head at Cassius.

"Don't worry about it. Its just a little blood." She shrugged and continued to sit there with him, friendly now that she'd been able to overlook her little accident in the face of his praise. "I'm not worried about it."

John Jr, who wanted to be a doctor when he grew up, would enjoy administering to her wounds when she got home. It wasn't a big deal. Although, she could have used an aspirin. Her head ached something awful.

Just when Cassius thought he had upset her more, he blinked when he noticed her profound interest in his many sentences. Maybe it was good thing he spoke quickly in a time of terror. Whatever came out of his mouth helped calm the girl down- and he too was calming at a rapid pace. "I really have never seen a girl skateboard that well, and I am sorry I interrupted your concentration. That was not my intention at all." He waved his hands as if adding on to his claim. He honestly thought she hadn't seen him come near the bench. He was way off in that analysis and would never make the same mistake again.

"I think it's cool that you skateboard. It's way better to watch a girl skateboard then a guy." Well, Cassius at least was honest when it came to watching one sex over the other, but hopefully the girl would take it as a compliment either way. "I see boys falling every five seconds around town so you'd definitely beat them in a competition." Although.. in return the girl would be stuck with all kinds of marks and bruises. Was that really worth it? He wondered if there was a competition that existed in the area. It'd be fun to watch all sorts of people compete like that.

"As long as you clean those wounds when you get home, you should be fine." he shifted his eyes lightly over her marks and shuddered at the thought of it all. Cassius never inflicted damage on to himself. When someone punched him there was usually a reason- but that was different story. "I mean, are you sure you want to keep practicing after such a fall? I'm not doubting your skills or anything but I'm just worried you'll hurt yourself again." Especially with him around. He might have been bad skateboarding karma or something.

"What happens to be your name by the way? I'm Cassius James. Sorry again for all of this. I really don't mind getting you some ice or something from the drug store if you need it." What if this girl came back and sued him or something? He realized he should really be more careful and NOT leave his bed next time he was hung-over. Maybe he was some kind of chaos guy meant to inflict pain all over others. The thought itself seemed kinda cool, but not when it came to hurting innocent girls. Guys were a completely different story though.

Despite all of his random sleepy thoughts, his eyes then landed on the chick's skateboard. "That's a cool board you have there." Thankfully, he was brought back into reality again.

It was a good thing Cassius had found a way to compliment her. It was difficult for Vanessa to be upset with him when he was stroking her ego. Her temper was, thus, checked by his praise- clearly, he hadn't meant to distract her. He'd simply been watching, admiring her impressive skills. It was impossible for her to fault him for that.

The way he continued to emphasize the fact that she was a girl bothered her, however.

"I don't see what being a girl has to do with it," Vanessa informed him in a critical, bossy sort of voice. The things he said confused her a little. Cassius didn't seem sexist, exactly, and he was being very nice, but she still wasn't sure what to think about the way he insisted on comparing her to boys. "You know, being able to do this has nothing to do with whether I'm a boy or a girl. I could beat all of them, because I'm that good, and I've worked hard."

His concern for her well-being was touching, and Vanessa smiled at him. "A little tumble isn't that big of a deal. I'll take care of it at home."

Usually, she'd have no problem getting up and starting again, but the way her head had collided with the metal rail had left her a little dizzy. It was half the reason she was still sitting on her a**. Vanessa wasn't sure how steady she'd be on her feet, at first, and she had no desire to fall again in front of this boy.

"I couldn't ask you to spend any money on me. Quit worrying about it." She waved away his valiant offer to visit the drug store for her, and held out her hand for him to shake. "Its nice to meet you, Cassius. My names is Vanessa- Vanessa Rae.""

She glanced at her skateboard, which had rolled several feet away after her fall. Groaning quietly, she shifted onto her hands and knees, wincing when her new scrapes were irritated once more against the pavement, and stretched outwards. Her fingers found the rim of the board and, tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth, Vanessa pulled it back towards them. Once it was close enough for her to sit up, she did so and handed her skateboard over for Cassius to inspect.

"Its new," she told him with a smirk.

He was not shocked to hear her tone change when it came to the girl detail. Perhaps he had phrased it all wrong, which also came as no surprise for him. He tended to do that often and usually came off the wrong way by accident.

"Well you see, it's rare for me to actually meet a girl that can kick other guy's butts. That's just another reason I am impressed is all. I swear, most of the girls I run into can't even lift their coffee cup on their own without me helping them. That's not saying I think ALL girls are like that. I just always happen to meet those kinds. Please, I prefer a girl that fends for her own. They are just rare in my own life which sucks for me." Cassius hoped his claim was good enough. He really had little faith in either of the sexes- so there was no competition for him. But when it came to girls he hung out with, they were never daring or interested in skateboarding for example.

"Everyone has their own unique skills I suppose." He smiled lightly while thinking about his own for that matter. "I didn't mean to come off rudely by the way. I think girls that like being taken care of run into me more often, that's all." And there was nothing wrong with girls wanting to live that way. Hell, it gave Cassius something to do most of the time! "There are guys that act the exact same way and don't skateboard. That's the funny thing about life." Everyone could do what they wanted whenever they wanted.

At her request he zipped his mouth shut but couldn't help but chuckle at her movement in reaching out for her skateboard. He definitely enjoyed when her tongue stuck out- yep, this girl was fearless. "Vanessa, you really are a cool kid you know that?" And that was really his point in all of these complements.

"So wait, besides all of this skateboarding what else do you like doing? You are obviously athletic and probably do all sorts of activities." He was always intrigued when people spent their time being busy. Cassius was horrible at managing his time so he never participated in normal activities.

His explanation was more than she expected, and Vanessa listened to him quietly with a cocked eyebrow. The women he knew sounded frightfully helpless, and Vanessa's heart went out to them. She couldn't imagine allowing someone to help her drink coffee- the indignity would have destroyed her. Vanessa herself had never really had a female role model, but the few memories she had of her mother always depicted a strong and independent lady. The late Mrs. Rae had been a very good mother, and a graceful and captivating woman. While Vanessa was not yet all of those things, she hoped to be. Someday.

She didn't know many women like the ones Cassius was familiar with. "All the girls you know sound boring," Vanessa informed him with a laugh. "You're right. That does suck for you, but your luck must be changing, since you've met me."

"I know," she grinned at the compliment, "I guess you're pretty cool too- it was nice of you to worry about me, even though you didn't have to."

His last question pleased her. There was nothing Vanessa liked talking more about than the things that kept her busy. He was right. She was athletic, but her lifestyle didn't always leave time free for the recreational.

"I work a lot, mostly," she said with a shrug, and looked him in the eye, "I'm saving up money so that I can pay for drum lessons, and I usually babysit when I'm not there or at school. Actually, Big Willy lets me bring John Jr -that's my little brother- to work with me sometimes, so that dad doesn't have to worry about finding anyone else to look after him."

She tilted her head to the side and examined him with her eyes for a second. His hair was long and looked very soft to the tough, and she wondered at his upbringing. The jeans and sweatshirt he wore seemed pretty casual, but some of the things he'd said suggested that their respective realities were very different.

"I like to have fun when I can," she smirked mischievously at him, golden eyes twinkling, "and I'm very good at having fun."
PostPosted: Sat Feb 27, 2010 6:28 pm

"I wouldn't call it boring. More along the lines of... typical." Although lately he had been running into some stranger females. First there was Dale who he was now in competition with against all other females, and Fallon who wanted nothing to do with him. Jada who argued but flirted, and Rhiana who he was now betting against and playing games with. Vanessa could be added to his newly found interesting section of the 'people I know' book.

It seemed appropriate that Vanessa enjoyed all of these busy activities. Cassius found that people who actually had jobs used their free time to their fullest since they were usually busy working most of the time. Cassius would never have the need to get a real job unless his gambling luck ran out one day. But even that was more unlikely then the world ending. So, lucky for him.

He chuckled at her mischievous add on to her sentence about being fun but felt a rush of tiredness and hangover settle into his brain. Most of his current body battle was because he hadn't eaten anything yet, and now would be the perfect time for some greasy diner food. That was originally his destination for the day, but he obviously got side-tracked with Vanessa falling and everything. So, there was only one thing he could offer.

"How about you take a break from skateboarding and come with me to a diner just a block away. I'll treat? Plus you can tell me more things you like to do for fun." He always treated, happily. "It's the least I can do, plus I'm really hungry.." and if he didn't eat soon, he'd probably fall over.

To show his eagerness with the idea, he raised himself from the ground and offered a hand to her. "So, what do you think?"

"Typical. Boring." She waved his words away with her hand, "Same thing."

It was the truth. Vanessa hadn't met anyone typical who wasn't boring, and she refused to believe that the women Cassius knew who couldn't help themselves to a cup of coffee were anything other than dull.

The invitation to lunch surprised her, and she mulled over it for a second or two. The idea of a free meal appealed to her, but she wasn't sure how she felt about him paying for her. It was a question of integrity, and she'd already told this young man that he didn't owe her anything- but it it was nice of him to offer, and she was hungry.

"Alright," she smiled at him, taking his hand and letting him pull her up from the ground. Her limbs ached in protest, and Vanessa winced when the movement stretched the the injured skin on her knees. Woozy, she swayed a little on the spot and had to blink a couple of times before she could focus.

"I guess I probably hit my head a little harder than I thought," she sighed heavily, running a hand over her face. Her movements were slow and deliberate as she collected her skateboard from the ground. After tucking it under her armpit, she turned back to Cassius and gestured for him to lead the way.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 28, 2010 8:56 am

It seemed like they both needed a chance of pace, so Cassius was relieved to hear Vanessa agree on the subject. "Good choice." he added, while watching her grab her skateboard and wait for him to lead onwards. "Luckily it's just a block away from this park, so we'll be there in no time." He put his hands in his sweatshirt pockets by habit and led Vanessa towards the exit of the park.

He could already taste some french fries and a milkshake in his future. Greasy food was the easiest way to make him feel better, and he never had shame in admitting it.

"So what school do you attend, Vanessa? I myself go to Sovereign Heights." Although.. not by choice. "When I graduated High School I thought I'd be done with school, but next thing I knew my father had me enrolled in Sovereign Heights." he chuckled lightly while thinking of the loads of homework he probably had due tomorrow. "I'm really not a school person at all." In fact, he hated it and rarely attended.

Not before long they made it out of the park and to the street blocks. Cassius grinned when he noticed the diner just a mere block away. "See there it is. I don't know if you've been to that place but it's really good. They have greasy and healthy food." Although, almost every girl he'd ever taken there ordered a salad, of course.

He was interested to see what Vanessa would order.

Cassius was a very engaging character. Vanessa couldn't help but notice that using words like 'attend' and 'enrolled' made a person sound sophisticated, and elegant. On top of that, he kept offering to pay for stuff and Vanessa had swiftly come to the conclusion that he had money to spare. She had never been the type of girl to dream about being a princess, but the attention Cassius paid her made it difficult not to feel like one- even if he was only taking her to a diner in Destiny City. The point was that she didn't have to pay, and his hair was the silkiest she'd ever seen!

"I go to Meadowview," she spoke, voice casual and light. "I'll be graduating this summer, but I don't think I'll be going to Sovereign Heights."

Her grades weren't high enough for any scholarships, and they certainly couldn't afford to send her to school without them.

"I can't decide what to do afterwards." If she had it her way, she'd start a band and be famous, but Vanessa was experiencing some technical difficulties figuring out how to make it from point A to point B. She was a hardworking girl, who was willing to go the extra mile, by rule, but also a rather farsighted one- it was difficult for her to see the big picture, and Vanessa was very impatient. She wanted results, and she wanted them now.

"I don't like school either. If it wasn't for my dad and my brother, I'd never stay there. I look after them, you know," she smiled over her shoulder at him as they walked, and made a point of standing beside him on the sidewalk. Following wasn't something she did graciously.

Cassius gave her the rundown of the diner's menu, and Vanessa's mouth watered. "A cheeseburger sounds amazing right about now."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 28, 2010 10:41 am

Cassius was not one who worried about his future. He lived every day in the moment and never looked back. Most of this had to do with the fact that money was never an issue for him- not only because of how wealthy his father was, but also because of his own successes with gambling. Cassius had plenty of cash stored away and the number kept increasing. So life was somewhat of a joke for him when it came to succeeding or making it big.

Unfortunately for him, he was already at that point at the age of eighteen. Any kind of potential learning experience was long gone, and unless he lost all of his money, he'd be just fine if he kept doing what he was doing for a few more years. Money made him feel meaningful and powerful, and he wanted everything in return.

"I think its better to be unsure then too sure. People who spend their whole life mapping something out, and then boom, it doesn't work, tend to have the most problems. If you look forward with an open attitude you'll embrace all of the thrills and experiences along the way." Luckily he had plenty of advice on that subject, since his motto was pretty simple. Life was for living indeed. And getting lucky.

"Sounds like you have a lot of responsibility on your plate, so a cheeseburger would be well deserving." Thank goodness she wanted a cheeseburger. Cassius couldn't begin to remember all of the meals he had where he was stuffing his face with something hearty while the girl watched, mentally drooling on her salad. That was always an awkward face to watch.

They approached the entrance of the diner and Cassius was quick to make way and open the door for Vanessa, signaling for her to enter first. "After you." he then smiled lavishly, per usual.

Unpredictability was her speciality. Easily bored, with a good heart and a passionate soul; Vanessa generally enjoyed living life on a day to day basis. Of course, there were certain routine elements that she wouldn't have traded for the world. She saw her job as the key to the future of her dreams, as well as an opportunity to help her dad out a little with the bills. Mr. Rae, who had attempted to teach her the importance of making plans and sticking to them, was a diligent man, and he had the strongest will Vanessa had ever known. She admired him. Looking after John Jr, while occasionally a bit of a hassle, also made her feel good. Responsibilities were nice things to have- responsibilities belonged to leaders.

"I dunno," Vanessa said, and channelled her father's words without realizing it; "I think it is okay to have a bit of map, to help with -uh, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh- Oh, yeah- perspective. It is possible to have plans and still be open to the… mysteries of life."

Her head, still very sore from her run-in with the rail, throbbed predictably with the effort she put into the thought. Thinking was hard.

She smiled in delight when they returned to the topic of food. This was much more familiar territory, for her.

"I'm going to get fries and gravy on the side," she salivated and was, once again, surprised by his gentlemanly nature when he opened the door for her. "Thanks. You know, I'm really glad you offered to pay, because I honestly don't have any cash on me right now."

Vanessa struck a little pose, and modelled her outfit for him- a pair of relatively modest black short shorts, and a simple blue tank top. "No pockets, see?"

"I'll pay you back, though. Next time I see you."
