Today was Thursday. The good kind of Thursday, yano? The ones where everything in the world goes just right and then some; Canta thought to himself as he trotted alongside the river, not really paying attention to where he was going, every now and then stumbling slightly over rocks and tree roots. He was wearing a somewhat large smile, one would think, for someone not doing much of anything.

Canta had a set plan of exploring further than he ever had today. He had slipped away unnoticed by his parents and had sworn his sister and brother to secrecy about where he was. He bet Kiwi had already tattled on him, but he didn't care. Today the world was his oyster and he was in search of the mother of all pearls!

As Canta made his way alongside the river, he heard the familiar sound of tiny waterfall that broke the steady flow of the water. It was only a foot high, but watching the fish jump it was a favorite pass-time of his. For some reason the foal found it quite exciting. He found himself staring happily at the falls, ready to stop and sit down beside it to watch. It was only just as he was about to sit that he remembered what his plan was today.

"Uh uh. Nope. No watching the fish today, Canta. You've got stuff to do."

The foal said to himself with a rather stern and serious face. He looked over in to the trees beyond the little waterfall, and hesitated. This was the furthest he'd ever made it from home. He had no idea what he'd find from here-on out.

~~1 hour later~~

Canta was exhausted and ready for a mental break down. The happy-go-lucky foal was lost. It was official. He knew he shouldn't have lost track of the river. But he did. And now, he was sure, the woods were punishing him for it. Fortunately the sun was still in the sky and the woods weren't too terribly frightening. Plus it didn't help that Canta had no sense of danger.

"Hello? Is anybody around?"

He called out to the woods around him, not realizing that the person who answered could be a foe instead of friend.

Spell was bored, to say the least. At first it had seemed like so much fun! Her father was anywhere but present in her life, and her mother's absent minded wanderings sometimes took her out of the picture all day. The result? Spell got to roam wherever she pleased and for however long that she wanted and in turn, had effectively been taking care of herself for quite some time.

Well, if her mother wasnt going to, someone had to do it. And she couldnt exactly depend on her lovable but klutzy older brothers to fill in the role. But soon enough, the unique situation of absolute freedom had lost its shimmer and its glory. And exploring by herself just wasnt as fun anymore.

She crossed the river, avoiding the chilly waters by using a natural bridge formed by a fallen tree propped against rocks. Today, she decided, she would explore the forest on the other side. That at least would provide for a little more excitement. Or so she hoped. She was too used to her side of the river, it was time to try something new. So without a backwards glance, she bounded in the forest, readily prepared to face whatever 'dangers' lay ahead.

Every rock was a mountain, every tree a towering fortress. And the babbling brook that she left behind was an ocean that separated her from home. A brand new, exciting adventure that she couldn’t wait to begin. With a giggle, she kicked up her heels and dashed into the forest. During her directionless running, she heard another voice, a young voice, calling out. "Hello? Is anybody around?" Stopping dead in her tracks, she paused. Her ears flicking forward to catch any other sounds but there were none. ”Helllooooooo!” She bellowed in return, a smile playing about her face. Maybe there was someone for her to play with here! That made the whole adventure so much more exciting.

Canta stopped dead when he heard a response. His ears turned towards the source and he scanned through the trees for movement or a blatant sign. At first he thought he'd imagined it... But that wouldn't be nearly as fun as it being real, after-all. So it MUST have been real. The foal, curious and as blissfully unaware as he always was, ventured forth, a smile on his face.

He didn't have to travel far to find what he was looking for. There, standing not to far away, he spotted her; A brightly coloured filly. He examined her for a few moments before he bounded forward, hoping to make a new friend. "Hi! I'm Canta. Who are you?" The colt made no hesitation to make introductions. Perhaps he was a little too friendly, but certainly such a nice looking foal couldn't be bad! Nope. He was certain he had found a new friend, and he was all too eager to meet her.

There were a few seconds of silence. Then a few seconds more. And then all of a sudden, she spotted a colorful gangly foal venturing for the trees. Towards her! With an excited squeak, she moved forward to meet him halfway. ”I’m Spell. Or Spellbound. Either or. I don’t really care.” She rocked back and forth on her hooves, trembling happily. She loved making new friends. So much. With a grin, she let out a small spiel of tinkling laughter. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that this little male foal would become her friend. Such is the simple mind of one so young.

It was around this time that she noticed the small green and beige wings pressed to either side of the foal’s body. She tilted her head to one side lightly. Her curious gaze sweeping over them again and again. ”What are you doing so far from the nest, little bird?” She teased good naturedly. Her soft laughter rang again as she pranced in a little circle. In truth, she was frightfully curious. Moreso than she had ever been. She had no clue that Soquili could ever have wings. The Soquili in her mother’s tales had always been the terrible raging Skinwalkers, or the frightened landbound beings forced to run in fright, hoping to escape with their lives. But Soquili with wings? How could such wonderful things exist!
