Today was Thursday. The good kind of Thursday, yano? The ones where everything in the world goes just right and then some; Canta thought to himself as he trotted alongside the river, not really paying attention to where he was going, every now and then stumbling slightly over rocks and tree roots. He was wearing a somewhat large smile, one would think, for someone not doing much of anything.
Canta had a set plan of exploring further than he ever had today. He had slipped away unnoticed by his parents and had sworn his sister and brother to secrecy about where he was. He bet Kiwi had already tattled on him, but he didn't care. Today the world was his oyster and he was in search of the mother of all pearls!
As Canta made his way alongside the river, he heard the familiar sound of tiny waterfall that broke the steady flow of the water. It was only a foot high, but watching the fish jump it was a favorite pass-time of his. For some reason the foal found it quite exciting. He found himself staring happily at the falls, ready to stop and sit down beside it to watch. It was only just as he was about to sit that he remembered what his plan was today.
"Uh uh. Nope. No watching the fish today, Canta. You've got stuff to do."
The foal said to himself with a rather stern and serious face. He looked over in to the trees beyond the little waterfall, and hesitated. This was the furthest he'd ever made it from home. He had no idea what he'd find from here-on out.
~~1 hour later~~
Canta was exhausted and ready for a mental break down. The happy-go-lucky foal was lost. It was official. He knew he shouldn't have lost track of the river. But he did. And now, he was sure, the woods were punishing him for it. Fortunately the sun was still in the sky and the woods weren't too terribly frightening. Plus it didn't help that Canta had no sense of danger.
"Hello? Is anybody around?"
He called out to the woods around him, not realizing that the person who answered could be a foe instead of friend.
